I once believed that the road to happiness continued forever and ever into the distance. When it was destroyed, I noticed for the first time that happiness lies atop a thin sheet of glass. [Shinobu]
What I love the most about the final arcs are not the incredibly engaging fights (the kill or be killed situations) or receiving the long awaited answers for all the questions, no - what I love the most is the fact that everybody is gathering together to do everything in their might to defeat the ultimate evil and bring back peace. It brings back the characters I have fallen in love with and all the scenes that happened in the earlier volumes. I'm always getting incredibly emotional when it happens, especially when it's about a series I absolutely adore. Demon Slayer is unquestionably one of those series.
Since the Infinity Castle arc was not animated as a part of the anime series, but as an anime movie, and because I didn't get the opportunity to watch that movie, I had absolutely NO IDEA what will happen Volume 17 (this lack of knowledge will continue to the very end of the series, forgive me).
Shinobu's fight.
"You are certainly worth eating! Let us live together for eternity!" [Douma]
As much as I wasn't a fan of Shinobu's character at first, she grew on me through the story and I began to understand why she is the way she is. Since her sister's tragic death had been revealed, it was only a matter of time until that story will have its comeback, and what's the best way to do it if not on the final arc? Shinobu's fight against Douma wasn't as big as Rengoku's fight against Akaza. It wasn't as flashy as Tengen's fight against Gyutaro. It wasn't as life-changing as Muichiro's and Mitsuri's battles against Gyokko and Hantengu. But it certainly had been as emotionally impactful as all the previous battles (if not more, considering how personal it was for Shinobu).
I never thought that I would cry watching Shinobu's fight, but here I was, sharing tears like I've been watching one of my favorite Hashiras doing all of their might and sacrificing everything for this one win. It was only the manga scenes, what will happen to me when I watch the movie, guys?? :(
Anyways, Douma was as unpleasant during this fight as I thought he would be. The thing about him is that he's like a demon in disguise. He seems pleasant when you meet him. A well-mannered guy with breathtaking eyes that will kindly reach you with a helping hand. He will tell you that you can count on him, that he will save you, but a second later he will put his fangs on you (not like a romanticized vampire, but like a hungry demon that will eat you alive until nothing will be left). I hated all his smiles and all his tears of pride. None of them certainly weren't an act, but none of them were pleasant to watch. I felt like I was looking at a snake ready to devour and I just wanted him to disappear. I hope that he will meet his end soon!
Zenitsu's fight.
"Zenitsu. You are my pride and joy." [Agutsuma senior]
I didn't pay any mind to the moment Zenitsu, in the Hashira training arc, said to Tanjiro that there was something he needed to do. He was never my favorite character, on the contrary, so I shrugged and focused on other things that I was more interested in. I forgot about the mysterious letter he had received through his bird. It all came back in Volume 17 and oh boy, my jaw hit the floor.
Zenitsu always irritated me with his tendency to always scream in fright and try to run away from his responsibilities. He didn't seem like a scaredy-cat that would get his big moment to shine, no. He seemed like a coward who only showed courage in battles while being fast asleep (and not remembering anything the next day). The moment all the demon slayers were thrown into the Infinity Castle, Zenitsu showed seriousness completely unusual for his character and I wondered what was up with that. He should have been kicking and screaming through the journey in the castle, begging to be released, not calmly waiting to land and fight.
Everything cleared up when his opponent showed up.
I can't say that I like Zenitsu now, but I have to admit that I admired him a lot during his fight. For someone always trying to avoid being hurt, this time he bravely stepped up, being 100% awake, and kicked some ass. He finally got his moment to shine, showing how strong he truly is, and it was glorious. I can't wait to see it in the movie!!
Tanjiro and Giyuu's fight.
"It sure has been a while. I'm surprised you're still alive, being the weakling that you are, Kamado Tanjiro." [Akaza]
I was jumping with excitement while reading the previous volume, when I realized that Tanjiro and Giyuu were running together through the Infinity Castle. I love this duo so much and I wanted to see them fighting in sync, Urokodaki's two living students writing history together. When it comes to their opponent, I kind of expected that it would be Akaza, considering Tanjiro's history with him, so there was no surprise. And seeing Akaza being all fired up fighting Guyuu was also something that I expected. Akaza is known for seeking strong opponents, needing a challenge, and Giyuu, despite all his worries that he isn't worthy of the title of a Hashira, is that challenge. It was such a magnificent fight, I am so excited for the continuation, especially considering Tanjiro's clever mind. He came up with something, but will it be truly helpful? We will see in the next volume, I guess!
P.S. Why is Sanemi on the cover of this volume?? This is such a weird choice, he wasn't there for even a second!
P.P.S. I feel so bad for the remaining Ubuyashiki kids. Leaving them behind with no guardian and a ton of responsibility seems so cruel :(
The outrageous anger of Shinobu continues to grow. From this volume onwards I think that many people will hate Douma. He's a very despised character. The fight was cut off to show the other characters fights too. So let's see the outcome of it in the next volume!
I personally hate Douma for having this odd preference to eat women. And for his backstory that has barely any logic. One can see that he's a psychopath that shows no empathy or remorse. Other demons have certain beliefs but are still able to show emotions in some way. Douma is outright a psychopath that shows no regard for anyone. He can't feel any emotions. One can't feel sympathy for him. I don't even think Tanjirou would be able to show any sympathy for him 'cause he wasn't once a human to begin with.
The fight between Zenitsu and Kaigaku was even more disappointing than the fight between Tokitou and Gyokkou (in the Swordsmith Village arc). First of all that twig was so weak that it was pathetic to look at. That was probably done so intentionally to give his backstory as to why he became a demon a certain touch of irony. Despite getting some backstory I still don't know who that upper moon actually was. The focus was too much on Zenitsu's character development and the battle was too short to fully enjoy it.
Ubuyashiki Kiriya was in the end quite interesting. Especially his backstory and how good he is at setting priorities and controlling his emotions. Though the circumstances are still sad.
A familiar demon reappears in this volume. It's time for the other characters to fight now too. Tanjirou remembered an ability that he never used before while he battled a demon. Will he be able to use this new ability to defeat that demon?
This was a great volume and has the death of a Hashira and her passing away only motivates others as they affirm their attacks and fight the demons, Zenitsu has a great moment where he confronts his old pal Kaigaku ad fights him and we get their history and the epic fight and finally we have Tanjiro and Giyu fighting Lord Akaza and their fight is epic, we see Tanjiro and his history with his father, control over Hinokami Kagura and the whole sequence is so well done showing personal growth, using strategies, battle prowess and an evolution in his character.
This volume has everything from fast paced fights to character moments and deep philosophical arguments and eve serves to encourage readers in some way like it does with Tanjiro. This arc is getting more and more epic and I can't wait for future volume and what lies further ahead! The art is fricking goregous!!
Re-read 2023 - This is a great volume because that let's us say goodbye to one of the heroes. With the big fight shifting between multiple characters, and some amazing looking ones that'll be great to see animated.
Damn this was a great fucking volume too. Got the end of the last fight which is a lot more depressing than expected, have our lightning boy not playing around anymore, and Giyu and Tanjiro working together to kill one of the strongest demons ever. In other words, this volume is fantastic and I can't say much more without spoilers. A 5 out of 5.
The Hashira and the rest of the Demon Slayer Corps start their siege of Muzan's stronghold, the Infinity Castle. The Corps pick the right time when all of the remaining Upper Moon demons and Muzan are in the castle.
First up is Shinobu against Upper-Rank 2 demon Doma, and with her poison-based skills, the demon is a bad match up for her. He's also the demon who killed her sister. This is the fight she's been training for her entire life. She's prepared for any outcome.
TW// murder, mentions of death (including children, sisters, parents), violence, suicide
There is a lot going on in this volume. There’s three battles with upper rank demons, multiple backstories to different characters, and tons of other plotlines involving minor side characters. It’s a lot to keep track of, but I still found myself enjoying this volume.
I loved getting to see Zenitsu develop more as a character. He’s been generally weak (except for when he’s sleeping) in the previous volumes, but his character takes a turn for the better in this volume when he comes face to face with somoene from his past. Their battle was quick but really well written and it was entertaining to see the two of them clash.
The story’s starting to feel a little dragged out at this point tbh, I’m still enjoying it and it’s fun to read but I feel it coulda been condensed a few vols! Some parts were a little confusing too.
It continues the intense battle in the Infinity Castle, where every page is brimming with high-stakes action and emotional depth.
Gotouge expertly balances the fast-paced combat with meaningful character development. The artwork remains top-notch, capturing the fluidity of the fights and the raw emotions of the characters.
This volume is crucial as it delves into the backstories of some of the series' most compelling characters, adding layers to the ongoing narrative. The pacing is relentless, making it a quick yet satisfying read.
Aaaand so begins the death count for the Hashira. Fucking dammit, I don't want them to die! But realistically I know that at least some of them will die, but fuck realism I want my babies to live!!
I can say one thing with absolute certainty-I can't FUCKING WAIT for them to animate this final arc. All of the fights are going to look so fucking cool and badass, it's gonna be a feast for the eyes!
I was a little disappointed that Zenitsu's fight was so short, but the character development, backstory, and glow up we got in return was well fucking worth it. And yes, I did cry at his near death experience, might as well get used to it cuz I'll be crying a lot during this arc.
Giyu and Tanjiro's fight is so intense yet so fast paced, I already want to reread the volume so that I can stop and appreciate it more. The action is spot on and I love the combination of water breathing and hinokami kagura, it's beautiful, elegant, and powerful. The flashbacks Tanjiro had regarding his father were interesting as well. It's a shame he passed away before the series began, I would have liked to have seen him more in the present.
Needless to say, this arc is not gonna let up and the intensity is only going to increase as it goes on. I'm looking forward to reading more, but at the same time anxious for what's to come...
As the final battle dawns closer, the overall intensity has increased to a great extent, the stakes are higher and there aren't any time for jokes now. These final volumes also set the prime example of a fictional story inspiring real people, as the characters struggle to make things right despite huge odds.
OMG! With each volume, I get more and more anxious... I don't want any more of my babies to die. PLEASE GOTOUGE!!! This volume was so intense the battle sequences and just overall everything.
Gorgeous. I love it when a good manga manages to get deeper, not just emotionally, but even slightly metaphysical without being simplistic. This volume manages to just inch us forward in that perfect tiny way.
I need to stop taking forever to continue things cause then I'm just confused. This felt short. Things happened, but it also felt like nothing happened. idk.

Fantastic story: Demon Slayer style! 😭Shinobu is such a good character. . . may she be immortalized in my memory! I am impressed by the level of character building given to Shinobu in the past two volumes. Getting to learn more about her was such a eye-opener. Shinobu isn't as physically strong as the other Hashira, yet within her lies such a force to be reckoned with.
Kanao was given some amazing moments in this volume, and Tanjiro has really helped her crack out of her shell. Tanjiro and Giyu were quite the duo . . . I adored how they worked together. Its so sweet how Tanjiro is constantly amazed at the talent of everyone around him and is so encouraging! Demon Slayer has shown how several characters have all experienced some pain in their lives and dealt with it differently. I love how Tanjiro didn't allow his trauma to turn him into a coldhearted possessive jerk. Instead, he is constantly advocating for the well-being of those around him.
Koyoharu Gotouge makes sure to never forget that Tanjiro's past is a part of him. The pain that Tanjiro experienced is what has made him the person he is. I love how he was able to grow from his hurt but hasn't chosen to separate his pain from his character. There are moments when Tanjiro can't hold his rage in any more and his anger breaks through.
Zenitsu has so far been reduced to a more comedic relief character until now. The insight into his character was necessary and well needed. To learn that his sometimes cowardly and fearful reactions have sprouted from a past of inferiority and endurance. His dynamic with his opponent was filled with such emotional tension, and Zenitsu is a character I have grown to deeply appreciate.
The flashback of Tanjiro's moment with his father was so precious! I love the wisdom that the "master figures" in a character's life bestow. The past isn't revealed to the readers in a linear way but distributed in random order. I've heard from many that Demon Slayer Volume eighteen is one of the best, so I'm excited to get to that.
I need to stop saying who my favorite characters are in things because EVERY TIME those characters end up biting it. (T_T) It happened back in Vol. 8, and now in this volume, and it's probably going to happen AGAIN...my poor heart can't take much more of this...I literally have no idea who is going to come out of this alive and it's stressing me tf out. All I can say now is that if Inosuke ends up dying I really just might have to never read a book again. Anyways this volume went hard and I loved it and I'm ready to keep binge reading the next few final books!
Best story i ever read with fast pace. Good development every character 😭😭 and the best thing even the antagonists character having well written back story. Can't wait to catching up with new chapter release.
I finished this in one reading sprint bc it was SO GOOD and this is my favourite anime! I loved everything about this volume but I am also very sad bc one of my favourite characters died :,) This was the best volume I have read so far and I am so excited to read the next one <3
