Deirdre Matthews was born in a village on the Welsh-English border, where the public library featured largely in her life. Her mother, who looked upon literature as a basic necessity of life, fervently encouraged her passion for reading, little knowing it would one day motivate her daughter into writing her first novel.
At 18, she met a future Engineer, who had set in a pendant a gold sovereign, that his grandmother put in his hand when he was born, and she have never taken off since. After their marriage he swept her off to Brazil, where he worked as Chief Engineer of a large gold-mining operation in the mountains of Minas Gerais, a setting which later provided a very popular background for several of her early novels. Nine happy years passed there before the question of their small son's education decided their return to Britain. Not long afterward a daughter was born, and for a time she lived a fulfilled life as a wife and mother who always made time to read, especially in the bath!
Her husband's job took him abroad again, to Portugal, West Africa, and various countries of the Middle East, but this time she stayed home with the family. And spent a lot of lonely evenings in between the reunions when her husband came home on leave. "Instead of reading other people's novels all the time," he suggested one day, "why not have a shot at writing one yourself?" So she did.
But first she took a creative writing course. Encouraged by the other students' enthusiasm for her contributions, she decided to try her hand at romance, and read countless Mills & Boon novels as research before writing one herself. Her first novel was accepted in 1982 as Catherine George, which Romantic Times voted best of its genre for that year, along with more than sixty written since.
These days son and daughter have fled the nest, but they return with loving regularity to where she and her husband back for good from his travels live, with Prince, the most recent Labrador, in a house built at the end of Victoria's reign in four acres of garden on the cliffs between the beautiful Wye Valley and the River Severn.
What started off as a fantastically romantic courtship set in Tuscany, complete with delicious food and travelogue, disintegrated into an odious, unromantic, dismal ending where the hero turned out to be one more amphibian in a long succession of frogs that the heroine had to kiss.
3 1/2 Stars ~ When Saskia was 15 her mother married Luke's father, and while Saskia adored her stepfather she resented the ever perfect Luke. Luke was 10 years older and already on his own road to success as wine merchant. He'd tried to be pleasant to his new little sister, but Saskia just found him too annoying and always kept her claws out when he was around; so much so that he began to time his visits for when she was away. It's now 10 years later, Saskia's 25, a PA for the CEO of a brokerage bank; Luke's a Master of Wine owning several wine stores and supplier to wealthy connoisseurs and exclusive restaurants. Luke is shocked to discover Saskia in the bath at the family Tuscany villa -- a Saskia that has undeniably transformed into the beautiful swan from the ugly duckling teen he'd used to avoid. Saskia is in Italy to mend an upset heart after her boyfriend betrayed her with another woman. Luke is in Italy on a wine buying excursion, using the Villa as a temporary home base. Luke's prepared to leave the Villa to Saskia in order to keep peace in the family, but he's shocked to discover that she seems to have mellowed in her aggravated opinion of him and is content to have him stay. In confined quarters, they discover they have much in common and actually enjoy each other's company. Luke can't get the image of Saskia getting out of the bath from his memory, and Saskia can't deny that she finds Luke incredibly attractive. When passion ignites, they decide to see where it leads.
Lacking angst this story belongs more to the Harlequin Romance line than to the more tension driven Presents line. Though it did meet the romantic location, ritzy fashion, and scrumptious food criteria of the Presents. The pacing in this love story is steady with a relationship that grows easily as Luke and Saskia get to really know each other. Their family through marriage makes it easy for them to find an emotional common ground, and makes it believable that they could fall in love so quickly. They'd gotten on so well, that when the big black moment arrived it wasn't as intense as it might have been had they been still sparring. However, I enjoyed their tiff and then the merry chase Saskia sent Luke on that lead to a lovely HEA.
my god why do some authors give misleading titles to the books !? a rumoured engagement..it gives you the impression that the book was about a fake engagement. it was not the case at all. it was about 2 step siblings who fell in love after years of avoiding each other as saskia always showed intense dislike for luke. she resented him for being perfect, successful in every way while she was a fat teenager with pimples and braces lol !! afterwards of course saskia grew up to be a very pretty young woman..proof she had all those gorgeous men after her..daniel, francis and even luke !! i liked the story very much but it had a slow pace and i even thought it was an older harlequin, was shocked to see that it was published in 2004. what was funny as well i think i could have given it a 4/5 star if there was some angst. yes it's funny because usually when there is angst, i say oh the hero is so mean !! but when there is no angst, i get bored and find it slow paced as this one. don't miss it, it's a nice little romance story...very light.
There is just something wonderful about a Catherine George book. Amazing characters, good plot, charming dialogue, and interesting places: a romantic treat! Even though they are step siblings there has always been a connection between them that they have tried to ignore. But spending some time together brings them closer and the feelings harder to ignore. I
"A Rumoured Engagement" is the story of Saskia and Luke.
The story is a slow romance with step siblings (no blood relation) who find each other after years of animosity and sparks fly. Pretty sweet, heroine gets a bit upset towards the last half but ends in a sweet HEA.
The most ridiculous thing about this book is the H and h addressing each other as brother and lil sister and then this gets romantic!!! Not my cup of tea.
