Suits & Sevens #1

Mr. Big Shot

Rate this book
Will

Turning up on the first day of a job you desperately need to discover you’ve already slept with your billionaire boss? Yeah, that’s a bit of a conundrum.

Learning he’s a closeted bisexual currently embroiled in a—by all accounts bogus—sexual harassment scandal? That’s more of a fiasco.

But having to sit outside the office of one of the sexiest men alive, day in, day out, knowing there’s no chance of a repeat? That’s what I’d call a disaster.

My sexy-as-hell boss, Spencer Cox, has one rule: no messing around with the employees. And seeing as how I can’t afford to give up this job, that kind of puts me between a rock and a hard place. A very hard place if you get my meaning…

The way things are going, I’ll be lucky to survive in this job a month.

The Suits & Sevens series spins off from the Love & Luck series, however it is not necessary to have read the Love & Luck books before reading Mr. Big Shot.

This was short, cute and entertaining. But it was lacking. Funny thing is that I picked it up because of how short it was, but it would have needed an extra 100 pages to actually make sense and be satisfying.

Spencer and Will hook up in a bar, and two days later they find out Spencer is Will’s new boss. I loved the idea. But then? They avoid each other for weeks. Then they hookup again and BAM, the boyfriend word appears. Did they become friends, spend lots of time together, develop feelings? Nope. Apparently being really hot is enough to fall really quick.

Then at 70%, plot twist, breakup comes out of nowhere, then apologies and reconciliation, all so fast my head was spinning.

I never really connected with the relationship, barely had time to feel anything and they were already in their HEA, while I was still wondering if they’d make a cute couple. I liked them both, even loved them as individuals, but as a couple? 🤷‍♀️

And while I loved the Love and Luck series, I feel it has run its course and would have loved to see a new universe from this author, but this is really closely connected.

2.5 stars, rounded up because cute.

Both the blurb and covers are stunners but the story was okay-ish. It was light and fun at times. Maybe a bit too sunny for my dark and evil heart? It was okay. A good buffer for me.

I think the story had potential, like it starts hot and heavy and with a bit of mistaken identity what’s not to like?

But then it just gets weird? Will discovers he actually fucked his boss and they both decide to pretend it never happened they only interact like 3 times and then the only thing we see is them hooking up calling each other baby and being boyfriends after one encounter.

I’m sorry but when did they even hang out? It’s weird the level of intensity they feel for each other when we have barely seen them together.

Obviously the 3rd act break up happens and it’s one of the most random ones I’ve ever read. Will and Spencer have just had a conversation involving travelling and being together and Spencer coming out and suddenly Spencer decides without any proof that Will sold him to a tabloid? how does that make sense?

Obviously Spencer realizes he fucked up and literally gives the lamest apology ever and Bam! lets fuck on the roof why not?

Overall it was ok and I read it in like 2 hours so obviously I didn’t hate it, I just think is silly.

Spencer and Will meet before either knows who the other one really is. It’s a hot meeting too! Things unravel from there when they meet later on.

It’s great to get both of their backstories. They’ve been background characters in the previous series. It was great getting to know them here.

My only criticism is how quick Spencer turns on Will. That was unexpected but it works out and they still get their HEA. Will is definitely more forgiving than I would be.

I’m looking forward to future books in this series. Sully is next!

I’ve read everything Ilsa Olsen has written except the last book about the Kelley’s. I’ve been saving it for when I needed something I knew I’d like. Her books are sweet and low angst and this one even had a little kink. I even liked the switch up where the big boss was the more submissive.

This book is the first one of the "Suits & Sevens" Series and I enjoyed it very much. It has one of my favourite tropes, boss/employee, but with a twist that I loved.
Will needed a better paid job urgently to pay for his mum's hospital bills so he went to an interview for a position as an Executive Assistant and he got the job. To celebrate it he goes out with friends and ends up hooking up with a guy in a club. But the following Monday he discovers that his hook up is Spencer, his boss and the person he will be working for.
Like I said, I love this trope but I found it even more interesting in this book as the top/bottom roles were different to what I've usually seen in boss/employee stories. Spencer just wanted to let go in bed as his whole life was under strict control and he found exactly what he needed in Will.
I love how both MCs complement each other perfectly. The secret part of their relationship made the hot scenes even hotter, but I also found endearing how they get to know each other when they're trying to keep it just as friendship. Something that didn't work because they couldn't deny the attraction they both felt for the other.
I was a bit disappointed at Spencer for how he turned on Will when the crisis arose, but at the same time I could understand where he came from. Being a billionaire had already proven to Spencer what people were capable of doing to get something from him.
This story is romantic and has so many funny moments. I loved how caring Spencer was and how good hearted Will was. They made the perfect couple, the secondary characters were great and overall I enjoyed it very much.

This story may have had potential (I think) however it was just too fast. Every issue? Glossed over. The chemistry between the MMCs? Where did it come from. The drama of a boss/employee age gap? Wasn’t in the room with us.

Idk I know that this author isn’t going to change my life but she’s usually fun to read and this wasn’t.

Nick J Russo however did a fantastic job at the narration.

Also, what is with the insane rugby obsession? I know this author is Australian but she set her story in NYC?

Idk. Do with this what you will it’s mostly just me rambling 😂

Happy accidents

I love the characters in Isla Olsen’s books. They’re full of depth, humor and are completely lovable. They’re real and I can picture myself sitting down and having a coffee with them while we talk about anything. I especially am a fan of all the text chains and in this case, accident prone people. “I just want you... Just you.” Spencer and Will have a drool worthy connection and though their road to forever had some bumps and bruises, they drop kicked their way into my heart. I’m so excited about this fantastic new series and to see who’s next.

This is Will, people! And I love Will from the series before. Enter Spencer a guy from 'the other team' , the enemy of Kelly's family. This is the spin-off from the Kelly family, and I can say, this is going to be interesting, because we'll going to see the Kelly again!
This was fun, especially when Spencer can't stop thinking of his new assistant and can't do anyting about that.
And it was fun to meet Jamie and Shay again.
I liked this one!

A Joyfully Jay review.

Mr. Big Shot starts off Olsen’s Suits & Sevens series, which is a spinoff of the Love & Luck series. Will and Spencer have both appeared in the previous series, with Will as Jamie’s best friend and Spencer as Shay’s “sworn enemy” and rugby nemesis. Spencer and Will’s relationship does stand alone and if you have read the first series, you will see some connections overlap.

The set up here is a classic one with the men hooking up and then Will finding out that Spencer is his new boss. The hook up happens quickly in the beginning of the book and, while early hookups can make for great reading, I would have liked to have seen a touch more chemistry or interaction between the men before they dropped their pants in the middle of a bar hallway.

This book has a similar formula to the previous series with a large cast and Spencer keeping a group chat with his friends similar to the Kelly’s. Will and Spencer move along falling in love while keeping their relationship private until an incident with assumptions and no communication happens.

3 stars.

Have only read two books written by Olsen it might be too soon to judge but I'm pretty sure all her books are quick, simple, light and with some drama before it ends. Well, this one was like that at least.

It was well edited and well written. Told with double POVs this book follows Spencer (34yrs) and Will (25yrs) as they navigate their major attraction toward each other while working together. With the biggest complications being a sexual harassment claim from Spencer's last PA and his in the closet status this was a light read as they are easily solved.

I wish I could say I like the characters, but I felt nothing towards them, really. And after one comment body shaming John Barrowman I was so annoyed I kind of disliked Will. It was so, but so unnecessary I couldn't believe it was written. Why?

Honestly, this was super simplistic. Simple characters, a simple relationship, simple problem resolutions. They want to be together so they do. There were obvious complications I was expecting to come up and they don't as those are no problems at all.

For example, you have a billionaire and a just out of college character and there is nothing on their wealth disparity at all. Spencer gifts an expensive cooking equipment to Will's mom, they talk about traveling, and they don't talk about money. That was so weird. But this is supposed to be an easy and light story so it made sense I guess? Or how there is no talk about how Spencer dating his PA after his last PA accused his of sexual harassment might help fuel her narrative.

Basically, this was so simple that it made it hard for me to enjoy. There were things that needed to be addressed and simply weren't and that made me feel like something was missing.

The drama in the end was unexpected. Not in a good way. In an "it came out of nowhere" way. Absolutely nowhere. It was kind of annoying, really, like a last thought that the author decided to add to the book.

But I need to say I was nervous on how the author would deal with the sexual harassment claim but there was no need. The character was not a jackass about actual victims, it was quickly mentioned how fake claims are detrimental to real claims and there was holes in the PA story which all together make the best way to write a fake sexual harassment claim story line.

Look, if you are after a super easy read in no way believable go for it. This is your book. If not, might try somewhere else. The most interesting thing about this was Pax, Spencer's stepbrother. I want to know his story.

DNF @ 41%.

These guys have had almost no interaction, yet can’t stop thinking about each other… which must be based just on their physical and sexual attraction, because neither of these guys have any personality.

And I am very much so not of the inappropriate sex talk from grandparents that some authors clearly think are funny and/or endearing. Pretty inappropriate to be discussing oral sex at work, especially since your boss was just accused of sexual harassment.

And clearly this is a spin-off of the Love & Luck series, since there have been enough characters from that series referenced or making appearances. Unfortunately, I haven’t read that series yet, and at this point probably won’t

This book was a super cute m/m romance, and I really enjoyed most of it.

Will and Spencer are an adorable couple, and they mesh well together in and out of bed. I really enjoyed the slight BDSM aspects of their steamy moments, as well as all the sweet fluffy times. Their relationship did develop quickly, but it seemed genuine at the same time. I loved that Spencer was bi, and that Will was so caring to his mother as she dealt with health issues.

The whole accusation of sexual harassment seemed unnecessary to the story, and went against the light comedic feel of the book. I wish the old secretary had just falsely said they had dated. It would have done the same thing for the plot, and then it wouldn't be making light of a serious issue.

But the rest of the book was highly entertaining, with a host of friends who were loyal, but also love to tease the main couple. I really liked hearing the banter between the couple, and between their friends as well.

Overall, this was a fun, steamy m/m read, with a happy ending.

What to do when you discover on your first day of your new job that your boss is your one-time hot encounter. Oops...

Will desperately needs his new job, so it's highly inconvenient to find Spencer, his new boss, is someone he shared a lot more than his place of employment. But they can keep things professional, right?

This is a sweet, steamy office romance. Really the only thing I didn't like was near the end when Spencer made an assumption and hurt Will in a fit of reaction. I'm not as nice as Will and would not have taken him back so easily. Aside from that little bit of unpleasantness, though, I loved it.

A forbidden office romance. Except it’s not so forbidden and there are a lot of other side stories.

It was cute and fluffy. It was short already, but I actually felt like there were some side plots that could have been erased of skimmed down a lot. Maybe it’s because the book wasn’t long to begin with that the side plots felt too rushed or like they were taking up valuable plot time.

I still liked the book and want to read the next one. The story and characters were adorable. And seeing someone tap into their dominant side for the first time is always hot. I did hate the dumb drama that happened near the end, but I know to expect that with this author.

I find I have a lot of fun reading an Isla Olsen book. There is plenty of humor and snark mixed in with a boat load of steam that I never feel bored. This book is no exception. Will and Spencer together were super hot, especially since they went against the stereotypical CEO shagging his assistant. From the blurb you can definitely tell that there is hooking up going on, the difference is it is the assistant Will that is doing the shagging if you catch my drift. I really liked that turn of events and the fact that Spencer felt no shame about how he liked to be manhandled in bed. Like an actual adult he communicated with Will and made his wants perfectly clear. Thankfully their wants lined up with each others.

I also liked how there was never any true angst about what they were to each other once they decided to cross the line between employer and employee. Spencer and Will both wanted a relationship and neither tried making light of the situation suggesting they were just hookups, again adulting 101. The drama from the story came from the fact that Spencer had just finished clearing his name of a similar "scandal" and had yet to come out to his sister and prick of a father, but even that wasn't overly dramatic with some sort of epic fight. The story was focused mostly on the romance...and the sex of course.

If you are a fan of the Love and Luck series, you will definitely enjoy this spin off series by Isla Olsen.

Hmmm so I’m kind of at a loss. There were so many elements here that would have made for an amazing read but the execution (or lack thereof) was odd.

This was extremely fast paced. So much so that all of the conflicts were resolved quickly, without much issue, which left it all feeling anticlimactic. This is an age gap office romance with a hint of forbidden passion, messy families, intrusive friends and two very sexy men - sounds amazing but it fell flat.

We get a billionaire CEO facing a sexual harassment lawsuit, closeted sexuality, absentee mother, toxic father and that was just Spencer. None of these things ended up being major hurdles. And we also get him wrongly accusing Will at the end and he only has to grovel his way through one paragraph before Will is like - kiss me already!

Oh Will. Will is so sweet but we get very little depth from his character. His mother is recovering from a stroke, he has to take the assistant job to pay bills since he moved back in with her, he has to put his software development project on hold and his father died in Afghanistan. But we’re really only told these things. Nothing happens with any of it.

It was too short and too easy. I’m all for light hearted but the critical element is - heart. We just didn’t get much.

Eh, very little of the interactions and plot made sense in the real world. I don’t understand why the author set the book in NYC and pretended these people were Americans. There didn’t seem to be any reason to do it, and the slang, mannerisms and sports were all wrong. I’m sure nyc does has rec rugby, but...

Well... It started out okay, but what happened to the story?

I liked the setup: Will and Spence hook up before they know each other and the next day it turns out they are employee and boss. What can go wrong, eh?
Despite fun and cute moments, I was lacking Spencer's backstory, I was lacking even his and Will's attraction to each other which would be not only physical.
But most of all, I was lacking a proper drama.

Anyway, I've read the 4th book in the series, and I really liked it - I know this author has some good stuff in her sleeve, so I will continue with the series :D

not bad

Your average office romance. They hook up one weekend before finding out they were going work together. There’s some drama regarding the previous PA accusations and then another one when Spencer is outed and he accuses Will of doing it. When he finds out it was one of his friends who did it, he is just “oh, ok, you made a mistake, I forgive you”. But when he thought it was Will, he yelled at him and kick him out of the office. A week later he decides to apologize and just they just have a small conversation about that and boom, forgiven. Yeah, no, I wanted to see more grovelling from him, honestly.
His drama with his mother seemed out of place and underdeveloped. I would want to see a confrontation with his father at least.
Main kudos for the Doctor Who part. I love when I see my favorite series showing in books.

A fine first book of a series that crosses over with the Love and Luck series.

It’s a workplace romance between and boss and employee who hook up before knowing they are going to be working together. The boss has already been accused of sexual harassment and even when he finds his hookup working with him, there’s a half-hearted attempt to not get involved, but that’s about it. There’s not a lot of unpacking if the SA and the employee doesn’t seem to bothered by it, which is weird given he and the boss are supposedly pretty bright (ie. software engineer for one, and millionaire businessman the other).

The steamy scenes are exactly that and on their own would be all that, I just wanted more from the relationship though there were some nice foundations there.

I have read a few books from Ms. Isla Olsen and they are well-written and full of fun and banter.

This new series is a spin off from Love and Luck, and this tale is a very good start. An Employer-Employee trope combined with Age Gap will make a steamy secret love affair especially as Spencer just settled a sexual harassment case with a former employee.

It is a low-angst read, something that we can all enjoy after what has been happening this year. It features characters who are struggling with some of their circumstances, like Spencer being bisexual but still hasn't come out as such and Will needing this job badly.

A good start to a new series, Congratulations!

This is a spinoff of the Love & Luck series so we've met both of the MCs before. Will is Jamie's BFF and Spencer is one of the Kelly's enemy from rugby. As with all this author's books, I found it completely entertaining. Realistic? Not so much but I don't mind that in a quick fluffy read. We could have done with Spencer having a little more faith in Will but forgiving soul that he is, Will got over it. Can't wait for book 2, love these little reads.

This was a nice story. I liked the connection to some of the guys in the Love and Luck series just so I could see the one I know again. Spencer and Will have a great connection that they aren't allowed to explore one they meet in the real world, however they can't seem to stay away from each other. I liked their journey to get their HEA with they typical big misunderstanding that this author is known for, as long as I don't read the books one right after the other it's not a big deal and I expect it.

I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review
