All Hisato Shibata had ever wanted to be was a police officer, to work his way through the ranks like his father had. Wanted to be known as an officer who upheld the oaths he'd sworn and keep the streets of Tokyo free of men like Tatsuo Ogawa—Shinjuku Ward boss for the Yamashita Organisation. Going undercover had never been a part of his plans, but when his superiors put the assignment in front of him, he dutifully agreed.
But in getting close to Ogawa, Hisato learns some uncomfortable truths about himself. Add in his growing attraction to Ogawa and the two men close to him, getting out alive is the least of his worries.
Deadly Game was originally published as a ten part serial but has been re-edited into a full length 94k word novel.
I should've guessed when the very first word of the book is "F#&K" that the writing style would not be right for me - sigh. Nothing about these MCs endeared me to them and I'm definitely not embarking on a 10 book season series with them.
Naomi Aoki gave me exactly what I want in a book that’s based on crime. It’s hard-hitting, gritty, raw, and doesn’t let go. Deadly Game doesn’t attempt to make criminals soft. Instead it embraces the violence and criminal mindset.
I love the characters. The relationships are incredibly unique. Naomi Aoki doesn’t try to make those relationships fit a mold, but instead lets the characters tell the story their way. It’s not what would be ‘typical’ in romance and that makes it all the more sweeter.
The storyline is fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. I held my breath at times, wondering what would happen next. This book doesn’t follow a normal path. The twists and turns were perfectly executed.
It ends on a cliff that was wonderfully executed. I can’t wait until the next one!
5 stars for an emotionally captivating, unique, and gritty read.
I really enjoyed this book. It's dark and gritty and oh so delicious. The characters don't make any excuses, even the "good guy" try as he might, realizes that it's not the "right" side of the law where he belongs, but the "wrong" side. That type of character evolution is brilliant. You normally don't want to see the "good" guy turning "bad" but when it's in their best interest? Yes, please. This book has everything, from a relationship that breaks social norms, to blood and violence. It makes no apologies and I absolutely love it. There are twists and turns that I didn't expect and the ending left me hanging off a cliff by the tips of my fingers. I so need the next book, now.
I was gripped by this gritty thriller set amongst the mean streets of Tokyo ruled by different factions of the Yakuza.
The attraction between undercover cop Hisato and rising crime boss Tatsuo sizzled as the stakes rose and their feelings deepened. I loved the world-building with fascinating insights into Japanese culture and the fast-paced and complex plot was compelling. As befitted this dangerous world, there were violent incidents, but they never seemed gratuitous but built a sense of risk, added to the plot or characterisation.
I was utterly convinced by the characters and setting of this unusual MM romance and have already started book 2. I am hooked!
