Sisters – Alice and Diana; Brooke and Freya. Secrets – Alice, Brooke and Freya. A lifetime of intricate secrets, convoluted lies, deep and dark memories.

Alice had always been jealous of her sister Diana and when she died, Alice – at twenty-three – became Mum to Diana’s two children, Brooke and Freya, bringing them up alongside her own daughter Lizzie. The girls loved Aunt Alice, owed her everything. But when Brooke left the family eleven years previously, devastated, filled with grief and determined never to return, Alice, Lizzie and Freya missed her tremendously. It was when Freya sent Brooke an invitation to her upcoming wedding, and Brooke returned, that their lives took a dramatic turn. Nothing would be the same again…

My Sister’s Husband by Aussie author Nicola Marsh is an intricate psychological thriller which I enjoyed. I had worked out most of it, but not all – the twist at the end was a good one! The amount of lies that were told; managing to keep those lies straight in the retelling as the years went by – it makes me wonder how some people’s minds work! An enjoyable read by a new to me author which I recommend.

WOW what a story, sisters, secrets, lies and suspense, this one had me turning the pages and even when I had to put it down it wouldn’t go away my thoughts were still with the characters in this story, getting to know Alice, Diana, Brooke and Freya was a compelling journey.

Brooke and Freya have been bought up by their Aunt Alice along with their cousin Lizzie since they were very young since their parents Diana and Cam are killed in a car accident. Alice is always there for them all equally and she shows lots of love, but it has not always easy for Alice she has become a mum to three children under three years old at twenty three but she does the best she can with the secrets she keeps.

In their teenage years tragedy strikes and Brooke leaves their home town determined to never return, she moves a lot but always feels lost somehow, but when she gets an invitation to her sister’s wedding and an email from her cousin to say that her aunt is not well Brooke decides it is time to return. What she returns to will have her thinking hard and doing her best to open up secrets from the past.

This is a page turner, one that was hard to put down, one that I would highly recommend, I don’t want to say too much more just that there are lots of twists and turns in this psychological thriller about families sisters more so, a must read I do enjoy Nicola Marsh’s stories and this one is fabulous I loved it.

Sisters, secrets and jealousy in two generations made this a page turner for me. I needed to know what happened although I felt it was pretty unbelievable!
The story is told in two timelines through three different points of view. Alice is the older timeline, she is jealous of her popular sister Diana and her boyfriend Cam. In the current timeline Brooke is returning for her sister Freya’s wedding. She has been absent for 11 years after her boyfriend died. Freya and Brooke are the children of Diana and Cam. They have been brought up by their aunt Alice along with her daughter Lizzie. Freya is like a younger version of Alice, jealous of Brooke, infatuated with Brookes boyfriend Eli and for much of the early part of the book as the story jumped between Alice, Brooke and Freya, keeping the different storylines and personalities apart was a bit confusing. As the book progresses it all comes together and there were some surprises. It’s carefully plotted and the structure kept me intrigued. An enjoyable read.

How many secrets can one family have? A lot, evidently. Centered around two different sets of sisters, and set in two different periods, it is full of secrets, so many secrets and jealousy and evil. This book is like a train wreck you can’t look away from, and I enjoyed every crazed minute of it.

Diane and Alice are sisters, and Alice hungers for everything Diane has and will do anything to have it. Fast forward nearly thirty years and her nieces Brooke and Freya are in the exact same place. History seems to be repeating itself with a slightly different outcome. If you can suspend disbelief, this is a great mystery/suspense novel with many intriguing twists and turns. I did have an idea where it was heading, although I missed one crucial step, so it still surprised me in the end. A new author for me, so I look forward to reading more by her. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the opportunity to read it. I gave it four stars.

Sisters and Secrets- that’s what this book is all about!

Brooke and Freya, who haven’t seen each other in ten years. When Brooke returns home for Freya’s wedding, all her hopes for happy family reunion vanish when she sees Freya’s fiance Riker.

The plot unfolds the story of two sets of sisters in two different time periods who seem to lack the usual bonding that exist between sisters. The story shows how jealousy, selfishness coupled with inferiority complex tends to destroy any relationship formed, leading to multiple secrets.

The plot was so twisted. The narration as well as all the characters were well written. There were so many lies and secrets, that kept on getting revealed that I just gave up guessing who was hiding what. It’s amazing how the past and the present blended in all together to make for an engaging read. The ending was totally shocking and unexpected!

Overall, a good book. You will end up being surprised at the amount of secrets that exist in one family!

Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!

Another new author for me but a gripping read and an author I will look out for in the future.

This book is well plotted with some excellent characters but with three women constantly in the book I sometimes confused myself with who was who at times. Maybe I was just tired from trying to stay awake to read more. Lots of secrets, twists and turns and a good solid read. Difficult to say too much about the story without giving too much away.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

A rollercoaster ride was this with the atmosphere of history repeating itself. Author Nicola Marsh’s writing had my heart thumping like a rabbit being stalked.

Every turn of the page filled me with trepidation and excitement about what I would find written on it. The words chosen had the greatest potential of infusing me with frenetic energy to know – What happened next. The Sister’s Husband was one wicked thriller.

This was the story of Brooke and Freya in the present and Alice and Diana in the past. Brooke had left town after a catastrophe and returned only for Freya’s wedding. Alice was raising her sister’s kids along with her own after her death. Their lives were intertwined where coveting what the other one had was the theme.

Having read many books by this talented author, I was glad she came out with something new where secrets and lies went hand in glove in the entire story. Some of the characters went too far in their need to hide the past. But loose lips sink sips. And a word uttered at an inopportune time caused Brooke to start digging way into the past.

I liked how the author managed to ramp up my curiosity to the point where reading this book became my sole focus. I liked the sisters even when I hated their acts. A moment’s desperation could lead to madness.

This was a perfect book for me to lose my head over as it kept the world far away. The secrets between the sisters, their husbands, and the closely guarded lies had me salivating to get to the end. The author dropped one truth every few pages, and there were times I thought I had it figured out. But I was wrong.

Some might think it was too far fetched. But I did know some things go around in a circle. This did too. That was the beauty of it. Would knowing the final secret restore the balance and love between all of them?

WOW!

Man, I loved this book. You know I'm a sucker for double-meaning titles.

Of course, I was first drawn to the book by the striking cover; the blue of the water is perfect, and after reflecting about the whole story after finishing the book, every single element of it fits perfectly. The cover artist's work is truly exceptional.

My Sister's Husband unfolds the story of two sets of sisters in two different timelines (both seen in first POV), who seem to lack the usual bonding between sisters. The book serves as such a refreshing read about family, secrets, and girlhood; I had never read something like it. It is masterfully crafted, unique in its plot, and the writing sets the family drama plus the eeriness of the setting just right.

There were numerous characters present, each contributing significantly to the unfolding of the grand narrative. Read from all three POV's; Alice, Brooke, and Freya are so well written, and every single thing they feel, they do, and they think you feel it so much that every chapter is "just a chapter more" one.

This was a captivating read that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a well-written psychological thriller. It's now a favourite of mine.
I want to read The Scandal next!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'My Sister's Husband' by Nicola Marsh.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 27th October 2020

This is the first book that I have read by this author.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching and beautiful cover and intriguing sounding blurb. The synopsis stated that this book is a thriller for fans of Kerry Fishes amongst others. I am a big fan of Kerry Fisher so I am intrigued to see if it loves up to her standards. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 77 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Californa, USA 🇺🇸

This book is written in first person perspective with the protagonists being Brooke, Alice and Freya. I enjoy books written in first person perspective as as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. The fact that there are 3 protagonists that you get to 'chat' with individually is fantastic as you get a MASSIVE picture of everything going on, how they are feeling and what they are thinking.

This book is very well written and definitely unique which is hard to find in psychological novels. The blurb and cover definitely worked well with the novel. The book opens with a prologue that sets up the flavour of the story and from then it just kept getting better!! The writing style was captivating and the descriptions and languages Nicola uses captivates the imagination.

The storyline was absolutely alluring and had me hooked . The changes of time lines from past to present worked well and helps to slowly put the pieces of the story together. At times it was confusing until I figured out who was talking and I quickly worked it out. The way the past and present linked really helped out the pieces together smoothly. The book was absolutely rammed with deceit, love, loss and lack of bonding to say the least!!! I couldnt believe all the secrets that were kept in one family and as they were revealed one by one I was completely knocked off my feet as I did not suspect them. I thought I had it worked out about half way through but boy was I wrong!!! If you love twists you will love these shockers!!!

I was completely invested in the characters and think they were a great choice for the plot!!! I really felt sorry for Brooke, had mixed feelings about Alice and well as for Freya she was definitely one that I loved to hate!!! An image of Alice in her younger days!!! I really enjoyed reading from each of their perspectives and I found the story was really brought to life.

This would make a great movie and one that I would love to watch!!! Nicola Marsh well done on completely shocking a reader who is hard to shock!!! I am definitely looking forward to reading more of your work!!!

Overall a page turning psychological thriller that just keeps giving!! Prepare to be shocked!!

Genres covered in this novel include Psychological Thriller, Suspense, Thriller, Crime Fiction and Psychological Fiction among others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as anyone looking for a thriller that keeps you guessing, on your toes and will just keep surprising you!!

344 pages.

This book is 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5/5 (I loved it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

My Review:
Wow!!!!! There were so many OMG secrets within this family. It definitely put the D in Dysfunctional. As each chapter passed another shocking betrayal was revealed. I loved it. I never had this many twists and turns in a book before. My head was spinning like the woman from the movie The Exorcist but in a good way. This whole book was on point. It had great characters that were all flawed, a great story line with many speechless moments and a great wow of an ending. I really couldn’t ask for anything more. I’ve read this author before and she never disappoints. This one was no different. Many of her books that I’ve read before have dealt with the same family drama that this book had. All of them were awesome just like this one. I can’t wait to read more by her.

In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Wow, this book is brilliant!

Weaving between two time lines about sisters, family, death, how all consuming jealousy can be and events and decisions that are still impacting on future generations. Events are revealed gradually and my loyalties changed to different people as I was reading!

This is my first book by this author, and I look forward to reading more. This was a page turner for me, and although I predicted a few things, it was still a great read. I gave it 4 stars because the ending fell flat for me. It felt rushed? And I would have liked a '1 year later' chapter perhaps? Overall, really good.

Nicola Marsh has written a remarkable novel brimming with tension, alongside oodles of drama, evil, lies, infidelity, jealousy secrets, and unsettling moments. I found it absolutely absorbing and compelling from the first until the final page.

Brooke had a complicated relationship with her younger sister, Freya, and they displayed an array of emotions, so well portrayed by the author. Told in dual timelines from a variety of viewpoints there was a lot of back and forth and a great deal going on but I managed to keep occurrences and events straight in my mind for the most part! Throughout My Sister's Husband I found myself pondering who could and could definitely not be trusted and I think this served to enhance the overall aura and vibe of the story.

The characters, the narration, the twists and the plot were all excellent and this was one of those books where everyone is not particularly personable but this adds enrichment to the story, so you love it anyway. Very highly recommended, I look forward to Nicola Marsh's next novel.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

Oh my WOW I loved this book! I loved the multiple narratives and nonlinear timelines that told a bit at a time from the very beginning rather than hiding everything throughout and then dumping the whole truth at the end. I was able to work out pretty much everything but I didn’t even care because I loved the writing so much and it kept me totally gripped throughout. I just had to confirm my suspicions and learn a new detail here and there. There is such a fine line between good/bad when jealousy is involved. I’m definitely giving this book 5 stars and I highly recommend it for domestic thriller lovers!

Huge thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me the incredible privilege of reading this book in advance!

I'm sorry to say that this was rather disappointing. Shallow characters, predictable plots, boring pacing, melodrama over substance. Not the author's fault but the audio book narrator also bothered me with the whiny tone she used for some of the characters. Also, the title of the book is absolutely pointless imo

WOW! So many secrets that just kept piling up until a big finale at the end!

This story is told from a multitude of views. It opens with Brooke, the older sister, finally returning home after being gone for ten years. Brooke didn't plan on ever coming back, but her younger sister,Freya, sent her a wedding invite, and her cousin, Lizzie, emailed her about her Aunt Alice's declining health.

Brooke, Freya & Lizzie are all close in age. What should be a joyous occasion is marred by undercurrents and seething. Brooke recognizes her sister's husband-to-be, and soon after, gets another surprise.

The undercurrents and seething is something that is not new, and boiled between another two sisters, Alice and Diana. Two sisters, where one feels the old ball out, and holds a secret.

The story unfolds back and forth between the two sets of sisters where feelings of inadequacy come out as being moody and learned hidden secrets for which to lord over the other. One hidden secret brought to light will have devastating results.

Brooke is saddened to see her Aunt Alice, suffering, where she is kept locked up in her room. Freya, a nurse, has deemed it better to keep Alice at home and looked after. Brooke wants to be there to help with Alice, after all Alice was there for her to help and kept her secret. Alice has other secrets, that are password protected.

At first, reading about Alice, I was upset that she seemed unable to see what was in front of her. Then, it seemed as she got older, she had a more mature outlook and tried to guide the girls to be better siblings with one another. There were also times, that I felt she should've done more, but seeing herself in one sister, she played devil's advocate.

This book is filled with secrets, lies, plots, scandals, jealousy and murder. It leaves you wondering, who can be trusted? Fantastic read!

I received an ARC from NetGalley via Bookouture and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.

Plot Details

My Sister's Husband is the story of two sisters, Brooke and Freya, who were raised by their aunt, Alice. Brooke left home ten years ago and is now returning for Freya's wedding. Simple enough, right? Not exactly. Who is Freya's soon-to-be husband, and how does Brooke know him? What secrets are their Aunt Alice hiding? One after another, each secret is revealed. Will their family be able survive the revelations or will it fall apart before the wedding even happens?

My Thoughts

There are SO many secrets revealed in this book! You know from the beginning that something is going on, and everything is not as it seems. But what's the backstory? What really happened to Brooke to make her leave her family for ten years? And what is Freya hiding?

I really got into this book. Brooke and Freya had an interesting relationship, for sure. The book is also sprinkled with chapters from Alice's point of view, so what's really going on is revealed gradually. The timeline is almost a "meet in the middle" sort of story, as the chapters about Alice get closer and closer to present day.

There are so many things to figure out in this book, and I loved that about it. It was right up my alley. I've been into mysteries since Nancy Drew as a kid, and I even wanted to be a detective as a kid. Nothing makes me more interested than a book where you are continuously trying to figure out exactly what's going on. My Sister's Husband fits that perfectly. I also liked that the timeline wasn't quite linear with the different viewpoints, but was still easy to follow at the same time.

I'd kind of liken this one to The First to Lie that I read recently. The story is very different, but if you like either of these, I think you'll enjoy the other. Both are quick reads that will keep you paying attention and guessing something new as you keep turning the page.
