Many different students from different backgrounds attend the fantastical institution of higher learning known as "The College." They are the nameless, faceless strangers sitting in the next seat, or living in the next dorm room. OMG, so much time is wasted visiting every single person who has ever appeared in this series so they can have a brief emotional but opaque conversation with someone who isn't even identified by name anywhere in the friggin' book because you need a sourcebook to keep track of everyone because the publisher certainly isn't going to offer a cast list or synopsis of what has come before because it would take up half of the pages in the book to even try and anyway apparently this is the only book you should be reading and rereading to get every friggin' nuance of each character's slightest tilt of the head like there aren't a hundred other manga out there that aren't so damn frustrating.

It feels like this is supposed to be an epic based on the sheer number of characters and amount of world-building, but NOTHING EVER HAPPENS.

I have liked this series and the main characters, but I need to stop reading it before I come to hate it.

This series continues to step things up for me.

Though this one isn't necessarily heavy on plot, this volume focuses a lot on the characters, and how they define their relationships with the people they care about. The conversation between Elias and Chise was top of the list for me. They talk in depth about the kind labels they have on their relationship, and it's amazing to me.

Keep going with this series friends! It keeps getting better!

Honestly think I might stop here. It is an interesting story, but it is so bogged down by the amount of characters and ones whose names I don't remember getting to tell their tragic backstories or other random conversations. Then we have the teaching and information given to us and it feels like so much. I'm bored and have unfortunately stopped caring.

I love Chise and how honest she tries to be about her own feelings. I want to be more like that.

I absolutely loved the first 10 volumes of this series. And the 11th volume was pretty good as well. I felt it was a good start for the college arc. But I have to say this volume was disappointing. I didn't enjoy it as much as previous volumes. I hope the next volume picks up.

Series Info/Source: This is the 12th volume in the Ancient Magus Bride series. I bought this.

Story (3/5): I feel like this series has really gone downhill in the last couple volumes. I don’t even really know what’s going on anymore since the story is so fractured between a million different characters that I don’t care about. This was mostly Chise chattering with her new classmates and getting to know them and uncovering some of their secrets. There was also a lot of Elias being jealous, aside from that he wasn’t in the story a ton. There were a couple good scenes between Elias and Chise discussing his clinginess and what he wants out of a life with Chise.

Characters (3/5): While I still enjoy Elias, Silky, and Chise...a lot the rest of the characters were introduced so quickly that I have a lot of trouble caring about them or even keeping track of them. There is some stuff going on with Alice that is interesting but the rest I just couldn’t stay focused on because I just didn’t care.

Setting (3/5): The setting at the school is okay but feels very Harry Potterish. I miss the times when Chise and Elias did some traveling to more interesting places.

Writing/Drawing Style (3/5): While the drawings are still detailed and well done they have gotten harder to follow. There’s just so much jumping around I feel like we are getting quick glimpses into various areas rather than actually reading a cohesive story, I am not a fan. Originally I was excited for this new storyline to start and now I just don’t even want to read anymore of this series.

My Summary (3/5): Overall this volume was a disappointment to me. The story is too fractured and there are way too many characters that I really don’t care about at all. The last few books in the series have been like this and because of that I am setting this series aside. I just don’t like where it’s gone and am disappointed in what a mess the story has become.

Book: The Ancient Magus Bride, Volume 12
Author: Kore Yamazaki
Rating: 3 Out of 5 Stars

I know, this comes as a shock to those of you who have been following my read through of this series. I just found this one, as whole, to be a weak edition to the story. This is more character background than anything. While I do enjoy character background, I just found this entire volume really didn’t add anything to the overall story arc.

Let’s start there….I really do enjoy this manga series and have really enjoyed getting to know the characters and the magic system. However, I just found that this was more of a filler than anything. It almost seems like the author has another big story arc planned and used this volume to get us there. We can see the skeleton of what is sure to be another wild ride, but it just doesn’t come across the best. It seems like we spend more time just watching the characters speak instead of getting something to really help move us forward.

Another thing that I really noticed with this one is the number of characters. Before, I really didn’t have any issue with keeping the number of characters straight. However, with this one, it felt like everyone was fighting for page time. There are too many different stories going at once and it is making it very difficult to remember who is who and what they are about. In the earlier volumes, this wasn’t an issue because we go the time to know the characters and come to care about them. However, with the collage arc, I feel like I’m not getting that. It seems like we are getting this rather large cast of characters thrown at us at once without really being given a reason to care about them. I would have much rather us be given two or three new characters at a time and given a chance to come to know and understand them. Here, it just feels like we aren’t given a chance to form a bond with these characters. It’s kind of sad really….We all know that the author is more than capable of giving us these deep and complex characters. All you have to do is look at the earlier volumes.

Like I said earlier in the review, I can see the start of another story arc coming and I am very interested in that. One thing that I really like about this series is how we get to move from place to place in the world. We get to experience all of these new things for the first time with the characters. Like with us, they are thrown into these situations for the first time and don’t know what to expect. We get to experience these new things right along with the characters and it just makes for an awesome ride.

Anyway, I am going to go on to the next volume. It may be awhile since I am using my library system for these later volumes and there is a waiting list.

This is another filler volume where not a lot happens. There are plenty of conversations (that are just people talking about things vaguely) and honestly too many side characters who haven't been fleshed out so they all kind of meld together. The art doesn't wow me as much as it did before and I'm honestly happy I'm getting to the end of this series.

V rámci průzkumu, co čte dcera. No je to radikálně jiné než Země nezemě. I tohle má ale své kouzlo. I tohle je pěkné, i když to je takový více reálný a více ze současnosti tedy. Kresby i tématika se mi líbila.

2/20 Surprisingly disappointed. Most of the volume is spent over-discussing emotions and not defining relationships. Luckily the last chapter returned to the magic and magical world I read for and I'm looking forward to the next volume.

This volume isn't heavy on plot, and focuses more on character development. The only problem is that I'm having a hard time remembering all the new characters that are starting to look alike, never mind remembering the different houses and what each was supposed to represent.

So I find myself really enjoying this current arc of Magus' Bride, but this series feels less like a linear story and more like a CW or ABC TV show that's going to last for 13 seasons, and each season is barely connected to the next, and the plot becomes even more outrageous and ridiculous as time goes on.

I really like the concept of the series, but there's too much politics and backstory to let this be a slice-of-life manga, and there's too much slice-of-life/meandering to let it have a solid plot. The whole arc with Josef and the dragons felt like it should have been drawn out more and been the main plot, but here we are, 4 volumes or so after a lot of that, and I have no clue what the "point" of the story is other than Chise and Elias being (adorable) bumbling idiots in a world that wants to use them both. I dunno, folks. I just want there to be more structure to this. Or for us to actually get explanations to questions that have been hanging for a really long time--questions that do that awful fade-to-black/scene change when a character starts to answer the question or give any remotely revealing information.

I like the story. I'm just frustrated because I don't know where it's going. As a reader, I feel like I should have some vague idea of what the plot is doing or fear of all the bad things that have been repeatedly threatened at Chise and Elias, but they both defeated freaking Josef. Chise has two curses on her. She should have been dead in like book 2 just because of what she is. At this point, there's not anything that could be thrown at them that I would feel like is a genuine threat since they faced someone who claims not even gods could kill him, even when he begged them to.

Magus Bride isn't fast-paced series (and that's completely fine because it's not boring!) and this volume was indeed taking its time as several characters talked about their relationships and such.

Alice is still agonizing over her and Renfred's situation and tries to get advice from Chise. That leads her to think about her relationship with Elias again and they have a conversation which is definitely highlights of this book. We all have different roles in different situations and with different people and that's just natural.

On the school side more mysteries were teased and I'm itching to know more about those! Right now I think the most interesting one of the students is Lucy. Even though she's softened a bit when it comes to Chise, in general she's still keeping everyone and everything at arms length. Why? I wanna know!
Philomela is clearly troubled and abused and I feel for her. I hope (and think) that Chise and/or the other students will help her.

Finally, Chise's class goes to Scotland. YES, magic and mythical creatures! Magic stuff was absent for the two thirds of the volume and while I enjoyed it too, I love the mystical and magical things in this series and was missing it a bit. I love the fantastical, beautiful, dangerous and scary mix of magic elements and folklore.

Someone recommended the Ancient Magus' Bride to me a long, long time ago, and I can't remember who or why, but to that forgotten person, thank you. Seriously.

The Ancient Magus' Bride is a manga series following Hatori Chise, a young Japanese girl, on her journey to become a mage. Chise is a sleigh beggy, meaning she can see and speak to fae, draw power to herself, and use her own life force in magic instead of bargaining with the fae for magic. Most sleigh beggys die young. Chise, after an awful and neglectful childhood, sells herself to an auction house and is bought by Elias Ainsworth, British (maybe?), nonhuman (definitely), and the titular Ancient Magus.

The title is somewhat misleading, though. Elias does want to marry Chise, maybe, someday, but all he's done so far is teach Chise magic and get very attached. Chise herself is busily establishing a found family of her own, with friends like dragon mage Lindel and combative alchemist apprentice Alice (I love Alice so much). The art is lovely, very Ghibli-esque, and while there's bits and pieces where the author applies more Japanese motives to British characters, the majority of the manga is very sweet, with an ever-present undercurrent of danger that never quite goes away. I'll be reading this one for a long time.

After a four year hiatus or so, I picked this series back up. Since it had been so long, I re-read the two previous volumes to this so I would have more of a refresher. I quite enjoyed this volume. Chise is still wrestling with how to define herself and her relationship with Elias, but in more thoughtful, adult terms. Being at the college and being exposed to other students from different backgrounds, and having more adult mentors is maturing her outlook on life and it's nice to see. Does she have it figured out completely? Of course not, but I feel she's becoming a more capable person who can be both a teacher and partner and friend to others.

Of course, all this introspection can hardly last. The college takes the students on an away camp trip to practice survival skills. All seems well - until at the last moment things take a more sinister turn. Have to read the next volume to find out what's next!

Blimey, two years since I last read a volume of Ancient Magus. At least in part that's down to the series' appeal waning as its focus has broadened. Chise and Elias are no longer so central, though this volume at least offers a sop of sorts with extensive discussion of their relationship, including the line "What would you do if Elias said he saw himself as your dad?", which seems like absolute catnip to a certain section of the fanbase. But that still has to jostle for space with the magic school story, which is itself expanding into very Potter territory as it takes in old occult families of gits - and while Scrimgeour and St George work as names for those, I'm less sure about Rickenbacker. Neither the storytelling nor the sense of place feels as steady as it did in the book's heyday, and while I intend to pick up the pace, my decreased sense of urgency makes perfect sense.

A solid 3 stars for me.
I liked the interaction between Chise and Alice since they got to the college and to see a known face again was a good thing considering that there are so many new characters and not all of them are properly introduced so trying to figure out who's who is becoming a mission but to see Alice again and have her confide in Chise about something as personal as her history shows how much Alice has come to rely and trust in her.

Elias has come a long way too and it was a cute moment between him and Chise on the rooftop before going back to the college and all those new faces which right now I don't see why they get as much page time as they do but let's see what happens...

Another one from my TBR down!

There is a lot.... lot going on. And yet...there is not. I believe this book suffers from character fatigue. I will openly admit that I don't know even half of the names at this point and so it is hard to keep track. I do think the art continues to be quality, but I feel the school arc is not enhancing my experience of the world. I don't hate it, I just don't know if there will ultimately be a payoff for all of the invested time with the new characters. That said...I am in this...maybe not until the end but the investment has paid off enough to continue to have faith in Kore Yamazaki (artist and writer).
