Lockdown- Behind The Mask is a deeply moving collection of 18 personal essays about the effects of the CoVid19 pandemic from a macro and personal view through the Islamic lens.

The stories are narrated and written by 18 women across the colour bar and chronicle their individual journeys in and with the pandemic.

Raashida Khan's opening story puts a glare on family secrets, previously enshrouded by the busyness of life, forced to come up for air by the suffocating nature of "Life in a Lockdown". Such a profound and generous narration on the double-standard of a married man who took liberties with a vulnerable young woman.

These 18 essays give a worldview of the pandemic and forces the reader to reflect not only on their personal circumstances here at home surrounded by loved ones but, to show compassion and empathy to those who were alone and nearly isolated on foreign lands like in "The Wake Up Call". "Zoya" reflected on the disorientating effect of the lockdown and how a nation which started counting down the days till freedom to do and to be, began to break down as breathing unobstructed became the only thing on our minds.

Lockdown - Behind The Mask opens new conversations around how "males only" spaces, once they were declared "no go areas" forced families to band together and forge new ways of doing normal everyday things. The mask, previously seen as a symbol of systematic oppression against women in Islamic countries, assumed a new meaning and became a universally unifying apparatus.

This collecting is capturing and evokes feelings of looking inwardly as we confront our prejudices against a group of society.

This collection highlights our resilience as a human race navigating an unknown pandemic, unleashing and relearning to live with and within the epidemic.

This collection celebrates friendships and familial relationships and shows us that, it doesn't matter your race, creed and colour, we all need each other to survive.

A necessary read which encourages reflection from all who will come across it.

An interesting peep into the lives of these women behind closed doors. The stories portray resilience, strength and love during the lockdown period which gives the reader a sense of triumph. However, anthologies though different but because of the commonalities in lockdown after a couple of stories there was a feeling of monotony.

An incredible account of how even in the time of adversity women can find the strength to not only continue to run households, home-school kids, carry on working, and also write short stories.
A great read with an Islamic signature, showing 'life' from behind the mask.

Sensational.

An enjoyable and beautifully written book . Each story had that one paragraph that resonated so aptly well with me.
