Today’s pornography stimulates the brain like other addictive drugs and is hooking a generation. No one is immune–men, women, young, or old–to the destructive power of porn. It is waging war against a walk with Christ, a godly marriage (or future marriage), and is sidelining God’s people from Kingdom service. This book shows a path to true, lasting freedom with a biblical, clinical, and gospel-centered approach to recovery. Whether you need to quit porn yourself or you want to be equipped to help others, this book is for you. I've worked with college athletes and students for 12 years and porn is the number 1 issue we're dealing with. When I meet a new freshman, I literally say somewhere in our initial conversation "Well hey, I know you're looking at porn and we have a bunch of guys finding freedom in that area. I'd love to help you there if you're interested." 100% of guys confirm they are in fact looking at porn.

This book is the best one out there I've found. We've also been using the Freedom Fight app in our ministry. Ive always said science is catching up to the Bible b/c it's true. Romans has always told us that we can be transformed (find freedom) by the renewing of our minds (neuroplasticity). The author clearly lays out the data that drives addiction, namely dopamine released by porn use. Porn use creates neural pathways that become embedded into our brains. The only way to replace these neural pathways is to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. As the book shows, "The opposite of addiction isn't sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection." Connection with others and God's word will renew your mind.

Ministry leaders: If you're not addressing this, you're doing a disservice to those God has called you to. You might not address it b/c you're looking at porn yourself, this book addresses that and "De-shames" the stigma. You can do it...with help.

Parents: It's not a matter of if your kids will see porn, it's a matter of when. You need the tools, understanding, and a game plan to prepare them to fight. I've worked with many college students who have amazing relationships with their parents, yet they do not tell them about their porn addictions. You must open the conversation.

This is the greatest resource on the topic of finding freedom from pornography that I’ve ever been introduced to. Absolutely convinced that every Christian should read this book - especially those in ministry.

Everyone knows someone who is struggling with pornography whether they’re aware of it or not - so add this resource to your ministry tool belt.

If you’re currently personally struggling with pornography, find a group and work through this content together.

Ted Shimer has given the Church a gift by writing this book. 5/5.

Excellent excellent book! I would say this is the absolute best book I have read on the pornography subject. The first part of the book is of the statistics and data. The last part of the book is helpful, holistic and Biblical strategies to combat the grip of porn. (Any besetting sin, really) I highly recommend this book.

I do wish not so much credit would hang on the 'science' behind the addiction... in my first hand observations of addictive sins, it's still about breaking the habit of pursuing self before Christ and that is a lifelong journey against all sin although granted, perhaps worse in the addictive ones. The answer to all, is learning to walk humbly with others and brokenly before Christ. Which I felt that Ted Shimer did a very excellent job at laying out a practical and workable game plan for that.

This book could not have came at a better time, a tsunami of addiction is coming into the church and this book gives a clear, concise and biblical plan for addressing the problem head on. Everyone whether struggling or not needs to read this book. We can no longer run from our fears of addressing porn addiction in the church, this book is an answered prayer for helping men and women find the healing they have been promised through their identity in Christ!

The greatest threat to the cause of Christ is pervasive sexuality and pornography,” says Josh McDowell.
I couldn’t agree more. This reading was both personally healing and it was revealing to the eye opening truth of how crazy this issue is today. I’d say that every campus minister and college student should read this and connect with a small group / be discipled through our issues. My last review got deleted for some reason so I blame the spiritual forces listed at the end of Ephesians 6. If you read this seriously you won’t be the same after. 10/10

Very well done and reasonably thorough treatment of porn addiction and recovery in a Christian context. The first part contains a lot of the typical stats to establish the scope of the problem, but the real treasure is Shimer’s insight into the recovery process and the increasing depth of the emotional work involved. A good treatment of shame and its contribution to addiction. A good primer on the emotional unawareness, childhood trauma, and father wounds that are often involved.

If I had one book to recommend on the topic, as of now it would be this one.

I wish I’d had this 20 years ago

Very helpful book. Especially if read in conjunction with the website and video series.

I have some doctrinal disagreements and so don’t advise his teaching on how to respond to the gospel. However, his teaching on how to put to death what is earthly in our members regarding porn and sexual sin is fantastic. This will be a big help to me in my own growth and in my opportunities to help others.

I really wanted to like this book. I really did, given that it addresses one of the biggest issues that we deal with in counseling and one of the issues that I believe is eroding the "church" (broadly defined). This book was given to me by a gentleman who has made it a goal, or so it seems, to make a point that the way we handled a situation in counseling and leadership was not done accurately. So I finally set aside some time to read this book. Much of it is pretty good as I'll note with a dozen or so points to follow. There were some clear strengths to the book that were sadly countered by the many weaknesses.

Strengths of the book include: 1) He warns of the potential tsunami coming to the church (he doesn't define church so this counsel be anything that falls under the broad umbrella of church); 2) He provides an in-depth statistical analysis regarding porn usage within society and more specifically within the church; 3) He shows the statistical analysis of the effects of porn on society, amongst teenagers, within marriages, and within the church; 4) He rightly warns against behavior modification and shows how this approach has failed; 5) He rightly speaks to the spiritual effects that porn has on professing believers; 6) He demonstrates how porn decreases the value of human life and the value of marriage as defined by God; 7) He agrees with the process that Biblical Counseling has used for decades: "Accountability+Spiritual Disciplines+Addressing the roots=Freedom. That is the process used amongst Biblical Counselors; 8) He points out the lies that are behind porn usage; 9) He points out how studies show that porn never helps a marriage; 10) He argues that victory takes faith and works; 11) He offers much good application of Scripture; 12) He writes about normal human emotions and how people respond differently--often sinfully--to those emotions; 13) He points out the problems associated with isolation, noting that porn usage and loneliness often go hand-in-hand; 14) Provides some good insight on "the way of escape" as talked about by the Apostle Paul in I Corinthians 10:13.

There was much in those strengths and some might find it helpful but there were significant weaknesses. Those are: 1) This could be a minor point but he uses the term "addiction" which in fact Biblically should be called "enslavement"; 2) The basis of the study on dopamine in the brain appears to be a study using rats. This is very significant and actually undermines a huge section of this book. He develops the theory of elasticity of the brain and the supposed studies that prove brain changes. However, it is significant to note that not only did he refer to "rat studies" in the footnote but the brain studies that are often used to support Shimer's argument are actually undermined by many other studies; 3) He has high regard for the book, "The Body Keeps the Score," which is demonstrated as not accurate in the book, "The Body Does Not Keep the Score"; 4) He argues that the prefrontal cortex is the defense totally ignoring the fact that the Holy Spirit is actually the defender; 5) Argues that Christians are content to live in sin because of shame and self-deception. Deception? Yes. The shame argument is based on anecdotal evidence and the content to live in sin might more probably indicate that the person might not be truly regenerate; 6) He argues that more porn = less service, however, this is often not true as some actually compensate for the porn by serving more. They often are involved in more things as a means to, perhaps, carry out a protestant penance. 7) He gives confusing teaching on shame and guilt; 8) In an odd analogy he uses butterflies to prove a scientific point about humans. Must like the use of rats to prove things, the truth is, if we are merely evolved animals, that both rat studies and analogies of butterflies definitely applies, but...; 9) A number of times he states that people hate self which contradicts very clear teaching of Scripture; 10) Lends too much credence to psychological labels without any clarification; 11) Offers confusing points when speaking about people believing they are worthless but doesn't counter that with sound theology or with getting to the true root of the issue; 12) As noted prior, the bulk of some of the arguments are more based in humanism than in sound theological perspectives; 13) While rightly arguing for accountability amongs others, he misses the most important accountability that one can have and that is accountability with God; 14) He seems, in my perspective, to undermine the power and work of the Holy Spirit in salvation and in true Biblical change; 15) His arguments about biology leave one to ask, "How does understanding biology truly help the addicted (I'd say enslaved) renew their mind?; 16) Freudian in using the "sub-conscious" as supportive of his points; 17) Again uses rats but later this was used for the power of community; 18) Argues that one can't experience the love of God until they experience love and acceptance from other people. This, along with other points, allow for an amazing blame shift, even though the author at various points attempts to clarify that people are still responsible; 19) Offers an inadequate goal for poeple to pursue freedom. It's not a bad goal, it just misses the ultimate Biblical goal and that the goal of Glorifying God; 20) Use of the term "emotional tank" is psychology, not Biblical; 21) The wheels come off the theology of one's anthropology with the author's arguments about shame; 22) Seems to imply that addictions are not sinful; 23) Uses the prodigal son story but contradicts what he had written earlier about guilt and shame; 24) WRites a lot about the brain but leaves one wondering if he confuses the brain and mind since he writes very little about the mind, heart, soul, spirit, conscience; 25) Provides an incomplete view on why many don't seek help, totally ignoring the issues of pride and worship of pleasure; 26) Though he attempts to avoid this, he ends up making others responsible for one's imbibing in porn

As a whole the book offers some helpful things but it came up short in many very specific ways and isn't one that I can really recommend.

As someone who has spent more than 35 years mentoring and counseling young adults who struggle with a porn addiction I'm grateful to the author for this book. It offers extensive insight into the DNA of addiction in a manner that is easily understood. Further, he lays out a very clear path to freedom that is based on Scripture and science. I found the section on "Hijacking the brain" particularly interesting and helpful. It is not only a very comprehensive compilation of research, but I see it as highly practical as manual/roadmap to freedom for anyone struggling with this powerful addiction.

THE BEST BOOK ON THIS TOPIC
I have read at least a dozen works on this subject. This one is the best. If you want to understand the drivers of porn addiction, look no further. Before I review the author's multifaceted approach to examining this issue -- one that is reshaping our world and culture -- allow me to share how this book has impacted me personally.

I have looked for a resource I could recommend to people without qualification. This is that resource. I've encountered great books on this topic. Many are extremely helpful. This one achieves more than the rest and avoids some of the other's excesses and reductionism. Further, this book gave me the categories, insights, and counter-formative practices needed to understand and overcome my own struggles with lust and pornography. Anyone can break free from unwanted sexual behaviors with a thorough grasp of the principles outlined in this book. Applying them will cement your freedom and empower you to empower still others who can jointly multiply a movement of freedom fighters throughout our world.

Now, why another book on this topic? What makes this book unique or even necessary? Other books do a great job of describing the porn problem [1]. Still, others do a great job of providing steps for breaking free from unwanted sexual behaviors [2]. I will not detain you with an exhaustive list here [3].

After demonstrating the scope of the problem in the first section of the book, the author turns to an examination of the main drivers of the problem. This is what I've found most helpful for developing freedom for oneself and for helping someone else to develop the capacity to enjoy it. In fact, addressing these drivers of addiction holds value for addressing other problems as well and can lead to profound personal growth and community development [4]. The result is a counter-culture of gentle freedom fighters who can love and empower others to enjoy true healing and freedom. Those drivers are outlined on pages 126-133:

"1. The sexualized society
Sexual temptation is everywhere. To address this root, a person must identify triggers, establish boundaries in accordance with God's Word, and act on those boundaries.

The Lies
Sexual Satisfaction and fulfillment are found outside of God's design. A person will miss out if they pursue holiness. Sexual sin isn't that big of a deal.

The Truth
Holiness is God's best and His will for His children (1 Peter 1:13-17). A person needs to be radical in cutting off an opportunity for the flesh (Matthew 5:27-30).

The Application Steps
Commit to detox. Identify sexual and environmental triggers, establish boundaries, and find accountability. Deepen convictions and pursue holiness.

Root 2: The Addicted Brain
People's brains are changed by porn, but they can build new neurological pathways. Repetition gets the porn addict locked into this addiction, and repetition of new pathways will help get them out.

The Lies
What someone watches won't really affect them. True freedom isn't possible. Porn causes unfixable problems that won't change.

The Truth
Porn has rewired people's brains and changed them. Transformation and freedom are possible through renewing their minds (Romans 12:2).

The Application Steps
People must renew their minds and build new brain pathways when tempted (we teach a specific tool for this).

Root 3: Isolation
"The opposite of addiction isn't sobriety, it's connection." Sex addiction is classified as an intimacy disorder, and it causes us to isolate from God and from one another. When a person feels disconnected from others, it makes them more susceptible to the fake intimacy of porn.

The Lies
People need to protect themselves by pulling back from relationships. People believe they can't be honest because they think that if people really knew them, they wouldn't accept them. They think they can handle their addiction on their own.

The Truth
Isolation is foolish and harmful (Proverbs 18:1). Confession brings healing (James 5:16). People need others to help them find freedom (2 Timothy 2:22).

The Application Steps
Establish authentic accountability. When triggered, move out of isolation and connect with people. Pursue a deepening relationship with God and others.

Root 4: Negative Emotions
Most people don't realize they have emotional triggers they have learned to medicate with porn. Growing in self-awareness and learning to process emotions with God and others will help them see a relapse coming instead of being blindsided by it.

The Lies
People believe they just need to suppress their feelings and emotions and move on. They think they can handle their emotions on their own.

The Truth
Inviting God into one's anxiety is an important spiritual discipline (Psalm 139:23-24). The person who identifies and shares their emotions with others is much less triggered by those emotions.

The Application Steps
Regularly process emotions with God and others and grow in emotional awareness. Identify emotional triggers.

Root 5: Shame
Shame is a deep sense of worthlessness. Shame leads to relapse and relapse leads to shame. It's a vicious cycle. Shame becomes an identity that results in self-hatred. When someone shares their shame and receives acceptance from others, it causes shame to lift. Learning to replace a shame identity with an identity in Christ is a powerful step toward freedom.

The Lies
Many people believe they are worthless. They think God is done with them. They think that their addiction is just who they are.

The Truth
Every person is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:2-27). They have infinite worth and value. In Christ, they are chosen, holy and beloved (Colossians 3:12). A person's identity and significance is received in Christ, not achieved in their own effort.

The Application Steps
Learn to live out your identity in Christ. Meditate on who you are in Christ. Be aware of negative self-talk. Confess and share openly with a trusted person or group.

Root 6: Trauma
Trauma, dysfunction, or abuse can be a major source of shame. The shame from trauma often fuels the negative emotions people feel compelled to medicate. Not every porn addict has major trauma, but even minor trauma can deepen addiction.

The Lies
People often believe their trauma is their fault. They believe their lives will be limited by their trauma and their wounds. They believe the trauma is who they are and that they can't change.

The Truth
Trauma plants lies in a person's mind about themselves. Replacing the lies implanted by trauma with God's truth brings freedom (2 Corinthians 10:3-5; John 8:32).

The Application Steps
Identify key traumatic events in your life and the lies implanted because of them. Learn to take every thought captive when you repeat lies to yourself through negative self-talk. Replace lies with God's truth.

For lasting change to take place--second-order change--we must take action anchored in changed beliefs and convictions. That is why replacing lies with the truth is essential. People must understand the dynamics at work and how each application step is anchored to biblical convictions. When action steps are connected to deep conviction, it enables changes and new habits to become a lifestyle. Helping people break free from porn provides a unique opportunity to deposit God's truth deep into their hearts and minds."

Having seen the author's analysis of addiction's roots, I hope you can see why this book deserves a wide readership. The ideas developed here and the videos and app that accompany it can create a counter-culture of freedom fighters that establishes beautiful outposts of the kingdom of heaven on earth until Jesus returns to unite them forever. I have no doubt this book will become a dominant landmark in the discussion of this important cultural and personal issue. It is my joy to commend it to you enthusiastically.

The Freedom Fight is the most thorough book on pornography addiction and recovery I've read. Pornography use is one of the most prevalent issues in society, and I'm grateful The Freedom Fight is tackling this issue. I like that Shimer thoroughly explains why people are attracted to porn, what pornography is doing to individuals and society, and how we can combat it - using both a scientific and biblical approach. As the mom of a recovering porn addict and founder of hopefulmom.net for parents, I found this book full of hope. I highly recommend it.

Pornography addiction needs to be de-shamed. This doesn’t mean it’s not a sin to view pornography. However, if 80% to 90% of Christian men and 50% to 60% of Christian women in the west are viewing pornography, it reveals that this issue doesn’t require only repentance, but also healing. Shame encourages secrecy and a Lone Ranger philosophy of getting free. Neither of these things are helpful in the fight for liberation.

This was a great popular level book for this issue. There are other reviews that give good summaries for his problem, argument, and solution, so I won’t spend any time on that.

However, I would like to give a small critique. One thing that I felt wasn’t addressed to (my) satisfaction (I did like the book!) was the spiritual reality of demonic opposition. I have known a few people who knew no way out of this addiction until, through circumstances, a critter or two had to be expulsed (in the name of our gracious Savior). You can find similar testimonies on the YouTube. I don’t believe this omission was intentional on Mr. Shimer’s part. I don’t blame him! We live in a culture that places the demonic right in our face 24/7, yet it’s generally imperceptible. It’s easy to see issues of addiction as solely personal problems. And sometimes, I would argue, they are! But, just as in the case of my friends and those on the YouTube, sometimes a critter may be the only thing between you and a life of freedom. Critter + neurology = a heck of a fight! Luckily, Jesus + a renewing mind + community can remedy many-a-woe.

Thank you for the work you’ve put into this Mr. Shimer!

“This book is a must read for every Christian leader in the home and church. We need more Christians who understand this issue and who are equipped to address it effectively.”

Used this book to lead a group of girls this summer and couldn’t recommend more for anyone actively struggling with sexual addiction or for anyone who leads others. This is *the issue* that we all need to be equipped on for the next generation!!

This book should be on every Christian’s bookshelf

And I dare say it should be required reading for all those who enter vocational ministry

A GLOBAL PANDEMIC FAR WORSE THAN COVID-19

As a father of 5 adult kids and grandfather to 16 grandkids I try to keep current with the culture in order to be of help in directing them in good decisions and keeping them on the right path. Reading The Freedom Fight has revealed a sinister level of attack on our entire nation on a scope of which I had no idea! My knowledge base about resisting pornography had been limited to 'avoid certain magazines & movies' and you'll be okay.

The author has exposed a far greater dark side that is an 'ever present danger' thanks to the cell phone and the internet. He provides not only well documented stats in the book, but also provides remarkable first hand testimonies of the lives personally damaged by the disease of pornography. Additionally frightening is that addiction to porn runs across all ages, sex, and economic status. Again, the author has revealed a pandemic that puts Covid 19 in a bush league.

Finally let me say that the author has provided 'Truths That Set Us Free' which are of real help for those needing and seeking recovery... true Freedom.
Everyone should know the information in The Freedom Fight. Next to the Bible, this may be the second best book to have on your shelf.

This is an amazing book covering a topic that is crucial and applicable to both Christians and non-Christians.

I appreciate that the authors takes a holistic approach to the struggle with pornography and unwanted compulsive sexual behaviors.

We read about not just behavioral adjustments, but also about how pornography impacts your brain chemistry and physical body as well as the spiritual truth that ultimate hope is found in a personal relationship with Jesus... who can empower us to say yes to Him and give us true and full freedom.

I’m definitely recommending book to those around me. Reading it with someone is a great way to get help to those struggling with pornography addiction. This book is a great accompaniment to the Freedom Fight app that has lots of great videos and other resources.

Talking about this topic can be uncomfortable, but the consequences of staying silent are too costly. Let’s get in the fight together!

This book is a must-read for anyone looking to walk with God deeply and disciple well in such a sexualized world! The statistics of porn use, sexual addiction, and many other ways that sexual sin manifests itself are extremely shocking. I'm glad that someone is taking the reins on the fight against porn use and sexual addiction, to inform and equip the church today so they may walk in holiness and purity before the Lord. Without addressing this needed and necessary topic, I believe there will be dire consequences. Please read this book!

Being in ministry for the last 12 years I've seen my fair share of casualties when it comes to sexual sin. Most people want to ignore this topic because they don't know how to handle it. Not anymore! The Freedom Fight is the perfect tool to start helping find recovery from sexual sin and addiction. It uses Scripture as it's the source to address the root of addiction but doesn't ignore discoveries that have been made about brain science. Don't try to address this topic anymore without using the tools in this book!

This book is a “must-read” for everyone. It is well written, well researched, and highlights the hidden dangers of pornography in today’s digital society. It is clear from Mr. Shimer’s book that this is an often overlooked and underappreciated risk in our society and is growing at a phenomenal rate. Mr. Shimer calls on religious leaders to educate themselves on this topic and to deal with it head-on, with compassion, understanding, and support for the struggling individuals. Kudos to Mr. Shimer for shining light on this topic and bringing the urgency of the issue to the broader attention.

Porn is chewing up our young men and women (all of us, to be honest!) by the thousands, as our culture normalizes it and our churches ignore it. What has happened to integrity and dignity both within and outside Christian belief? Men and women are trafficked within the industry as fodder fed into the machine of worldwide lust and perversion, largely amidst the "privacy" of cyberspace. Thanks to the author for the courage to take this topic head on. May efforts like this be increased and multiplied!

The most important/best book I've read on what is the greatest threat to the Church today: porn. Freedom isn't behavior modification or a quick fix, and Ted spells that out beautifully by digging into the six roots of an addiction. In-depth, biblical, scientific, among many other things, the content of this book covers it all and then some. A resource you need to read whether or not you've struggled / are struggling, as it will equip you significantly to disciple others on this topic. Sexual addiction affects literally everyone, so go get this book and help others break free.

Great research and practicals

I don’t know if I’ve ever read a book that has covered this topic so well with extensive research, biblical understanding, psychological issues, and disciplines to overcome. It’s my hope that parents, schools, churches and others will read this book to tackle the great challenge of pornography addiction in the hopes to offer freedom to all in their sphere of influence.

This book was an excellent resource to introduce readers to the severity of the pornography epidemic plaguing our country and world. While it is from a christian perspective, I believe it would benefit everyone to read this book. Topics discussed explained how porn is an addiction, steps to take to get to the root of the addiction, how to work on overcoming the addiction, and highlighted just how damaging porn use is. The scary thing to read was how early in life many are first exposed to porn and how quickly it becomes a secret and hidden addiction that impacts their youth and relationships into adulthood.

Memorable Quotes:

"During the first three weeks of the (covid) lockdown, pornography consumption rose by 12%... This opportunity led the largest porn provider in the world to offer its premium package free for thirty days. Thirty days is long enough to hook new users for life. This savvy move increased their users by 24% worldwide, a statistic that represents millions of people".

"Lawmakers in 16 states have passed resolutions declaring pornography a public health crisis.

"Those who watched more porn placed a decreased value on the institution of marriage, the desire for children, and the need for faithfulness in a relationship. Those who watched more porn believed sexually deviant behavior is more common than it actually is".

"Porn is destroying more marriages, pastors, and churches and capturing the minds of more young people than anything else today."

"The porn industry has taken a page out of the tobacco industry's playbook. Hooking kids on porn gives the industry a customer for life".

Read this for the second time after 2 years. I think it’s one of those books you can read multiple times and glean new wisdom each time. A key point is the gradual progression that takes place as a miracle every day. Ted Robert’s explains that a very small percentage of people get freed instantly from God but more often than not freedom takes place one day at a time over a long period of time. We learn to unbury things that happened in the past to be healed and cope in new healthy ways as we run to God. BRACE has been a key weapon in the fight for me. I began going through the program this second time reading through which I think is an additional resource that is best paired with the book. The book alone I don’t think does enough. You must study it, re-read parts, soak it in, and pour over the Word of God that is woven through-out the book.

The Freedom Fight is an invitation to be fully and authentically known by God and others. You can’t get free alone, for the goal is not sobriety, but becoming deeply connected to God, yourself, and others. Wholistic in its approach you will be challenged to grow in every area of life, to get down to the root of your pain and discover why you are medicating it with counterfeit sex. As you grow in your God awareness and self-awareness you will start making connections of the why underneath your unwanted sexual behavior. You will be biblically equipped and scientifically informed so that you can walk out your freedom with and in Christ. Your freedom awaits you.

Read this book to help me continue to gain more insight into this relevant topic of pornography and the addictive nature of it - after studying this topic for well over 10 years now this book is at the top of the list for me. The author gives the most recent statistics, the brain science as well as the practical experience that is need to help a person walk away from this book with significantly more knowledge on the topic and practical tools to overcome this struggle or help others (or both). Looking forward to buying several of these and gifting them to others that I know will benefit from it!
