This one is the best one yet! I have loved this series from the very first book. They are imaginative and hysterical with quirky fun characters and oh so clever dialogue with references to generations of movies, songs and t.v. shows. The magical "court" scenes are brilliant. Actually, every bit, from the tiny details to the actual story in each book, are ingenious and slick. Read the series from the beginning. You will be laughing your butt off and smiling the whole time. I guarantee you will fall in love with Rita Hayworth and the gang of mystical, magical people and their world. And, I have read several similar books in this particular genre and this series is the absolute best of them.

Still nice, still cute, still a bit predictable, but it's to be expected (hihi, get it?).

If you've read the series so far, definitely worth continuing. Not as fast paced, maybe, but I like the different perspectives and the new characters and relationships we see.

So, have fun, enjoy, and go on reading!

Rita, Keir and Diarmuid are plotting to rescue Evie using all of the resources of the magic world. Fun and entertaining with all of the quirky characters from the previous books. After the rescue there is so much more to enjoy with Imbolc Court Meet and a wedding to plan. I laughed till it hurt during the wedding scenes. I'm already looking forward to the next book.

Love of a mother

This book had all the highs and lows. We had the Kelpies revenge in the beginning, the outcome of said revenge. Then the result of said revenge. I hate leaving spoilers in my reviews but it was such a fantastic book. There was also such a cute fighting scene between Rita’s daughter Evie and Mauve. That was hilarious, especially since the Sephalin stepped in as a sports commentator. Seems the Faes are getting a taste of human customs by Rita’s rulings in the Court Meets. Those are always entertaining

This is the continuing saga of Rita Hayworth’s new life, which is keeping her on her toes. She now must face a mother’s worse nightmare. She faces this not alone, but with a gaggle of friends, associates and magical beings as they puzzle through the clues to find her missing daughter, while trying to figure out who the hell is the Jersey Devil?
It an emotional ride for Rita and all those she comes into contact with. Could her new job as a magistrate be the cause of her newest heartache? You’ll just have to read this wild ride as Rita hunts for the truth.
I highly recommend this book and the series.

Enjoyable but fairly uneventful

I’m a little bit torn writing this. I wanted to enjoy this, truly I did, but I just didn’t.
I personally feel like the author ran out of steam halfway thru and figured she’d start throwing things in and hope it came together.
Don’t get me wrong this was a nice story. But this was supposed to be about Rita! We barely got to hear many cases, were treated to too many Draimund chapters, no interactions with the rest of the townspeople, and we barely had any chance to have Rita overthink her soulmate relationship...especially after finding out humans and fae can have children.
Combine all of that with the editing errors that seemed to plague the last quarter of the book and the weird side plots that didn’t manifest into anything (looking at you Esme and Kagan); I just didn’t love this.

Midlife at Midnight by V. Danann is book four in the Not Too Late Series. The books are best read in order.
MaM is the semi-conclusion to Rita's magical story. The story picks up immediatedly where the previous book was left off. Evie is held by a mythical creature and Rita and the rest of the magical society are looking for her. Especially the Irish Fae King is determined to bring her back.
MaM is a excellent written story, with a complex storyline, full of unexpected twists and turns that kept me in suspense from start till the last page.
I love meeting charaters from the previous books, loved reading about their everyday life. A truly unputdownable story.

I LOVED this book!
Rita’s daughter is missing and all of Rita’s magical friends band together to help. There is so much love throughout this story and the action never stops. There is a lot of suspense.. as well as laugh out loud humor. This was such a fun book to read. There are shapeshifters, Elves, Merfolk, magically horses and the King and Queens that rule over many. The court sessions are fun to hear about and how Rita really holds her own. I felt like I was there living this experience along side everyone in the book. I highly recommend this series to all paranormal Lovers.

The next in the series book 4. Jesse is the new Magistrate in town. She has been choosen to be the judge for all magical cases. The job comes with great perks, a Ferrari, a magical house that remodels itself as new spaces are needed and a magical antiques shop.
IN this book, Jess's daughter Evie has been kidnapped by a psycho Kelpie and the help of the merpeople and the Irish Fae King are solicited along with the Jersey Devil.
Witches, Fae, mermen and mer women, Kelpies, Selkies and all manner of magical people and beings are helping in the search.
Looks like the Fae King has a special romantic interest in Evie.
A fun imaginative series!

Love this series

This book makes me hopeful I too may find love late in life. It makes me want to believe in Romance and Magic. The world building is amazing and I love that magical and mundane interact on a small level. I am particularly enamored of how all magic folk are aware of each type of mythical group.
I was thrilled to have 2 full stories and 4 smaller ones (Imbolc court). The overall story of Rita and her daughter, and then almost a novella of its own the wedding of Evie. Although it ends in a cliffhanger question all the other stories were told in full and did not leave me scrambling and out of sorts, if anything I was stuffed with pages that sang to me, I plan to break into another series but will return for book 5 sooner than I planned

OMG! Check this wedding!

It was amazing!

This is one of the funniest books Mrs. Danann has ever written! There are so many things happening in this book at your just don't want to put it down! Rita can't find her daughter but when things turn around, you will be surprised by what happens! I am just gonna say that I am totally team Evie! Can't wait to see what happens next!

I've gotten used to the fact that the books in this series end in a cliff hanger. The stories are fun enough that I've been going on to the next one. This ending was OK, most of the story arc of this book was wrapped up. The story itself started right where the previous book left off, so if you hadn't read it, or hadn't read it in a while, it's kind of a shock and takes a bit to get caught up. It's a decent story, though not what I expected. It was mostly about Evie and Diarmuid, not Rita, the court cases, and Keir. The ending seemed a bit silly and out of character for Evie and the relationship seemed a bit rushed, but I won't go into it any deeper, to avoid spoilers. Since it's on KU, I'll give the next book a shot and see where things go from here.

I continue to enjoy Rita and her role as magistrate. The cases and solutions are fascinating. However Evie felt too much. The Insta love and magic all felt forced.

This fourth book of the series starts off very tense. There are two conflicts at play, the first and most pressing is that Evie, Rita’s daughter has been kidnapped by the kelpie and kept captive. The second is that King Diarmuid seems to have a vested interest in Evie, which distresses Rita to no end. It distresses me too. I want Evie to be freed and safe and happy and I want to know what is going to happen between King D and her. How can a human and a fae, especially fae royalty be a fated mate couple? I am looking forward to finding out. All the talk of tea and food makes me hungry and thirsty. I drink more tea and eat more snacks while reading this than most books: “We have strawberries and clotted cream and three cinnamon rolls left over from earlier. I can make some little tea sandwiches. We need biscuits and breads.” “Olivia says we’ve got it covered except for biscuits and breads.” “I have some orange cranberry scones made fresh this morning, some cinnamon cherry bread, and a traditional English tea loaf.” Its downright inspiration. I’ve already made my beef stew in the instapot that my husband loves, along with home baked sour dough. Back to the kidnapping. Its been a delight that Danaan writes skillfully enough that she doesn’t have to resort to expletives so that when one does rear its ugly head, it really packs a punch. I had previously complained and even deducted one star from the first book, that there was no specific descriptive sex scenes, something that draws me to this genre. But I stopped complaining once I got sucked into the wonder, fun, and humor of the story. Then after having fully read the first 3 books, I realized that Danaan just doesn’t write those scenes, which was fine until I read a very descriptive scene when two fae queens together gifted the mer folk the ability to transform to legs and breathe on dry land. The mer king examines his new body with such detail that I know Danaan is fully capable of writing erotica. The mer folk, rather newly dubbed aquaterrans, weren’t the only faction helping to find and rescue Evie, It was such fun reading because I still glowed over Rita’s love story and now had another love story to gush over, as well as the fun of discovering all of My favorite case in court was the talking chicken, but I enjoyed every one of the cases. Once the wedding or rather handfast ceremony came, I listened to Irish music, specifically The Chieftans with Van Morrison, while reading. I was thinking that it would be as enchanting at the wedding scene in the movie “Crazy Rich Asians” but alas, Evie’s wedding would be memorable for entirely different reasons. I won’t reveal any details but in Rita’s own words, “It was a rollercoaster ride that took a dicey turn, but ended well.”

Rita’s job as magistrate has garnered powerful friends and dangerous enemies.

Evie has been kidnapped and Rita is frantic to get her back. And Rita isn’t the only one. The new Irish Fae King is much too interested in Evie’s rescue for Rita’s peace of mind but the most important things is finding Evie alive, then worrying about her relationship with Diarmuid.

As Magistrate, Rita can’t accept favors from the powerful fae in order to save her daughter, but it seems that most of the fae are outraged enough to help without requirement payment from Rita. Her new family in Hallow Hill are pulling in their own favors to help their newest neighbor.

I have to admit that I found this one to be a bit boring. Yes, Evie was missing and taken by an unstable being. Her condition was unknown and everyone was frantic. But most of the eight hours are spent with a frantic Rita waiting at home, breaking down in tears, where everyone comes to try and calm her down. It wasn’t like Rita was chasing down leads. The most she does is meet with some people to negotiate assistance since she can’t ask for favors or her future rulings could be called into question as payoffs for those past favors. So all Rita could do was wait for Lochlan and the others to pull some strings and hope they find Evie.

I felt it all went on way too long. When I purchased this book in the series, I saw the statement “Evie is missing.” I honestly thought she would be grabbed by the Irish King. Dairmuid was a player in the fae world even going so far as to say that people who say they are in love are too lazy to seek out their next bed partner. But in a prior story, it was noted that fae could fall in love at first sight, and one of the court matters was about a fae who had absconded with a woman who caught his eye. Dairmuid had his eye on Evie from their first meeting. Dairmuid grabbing Evie actually would have made for a more interesting storyline but wouldn’t have gotten Evie where she needed to be at the end of this story.

We do get a Court meet at the end of this story which included someone who represents the crazed creature who grabbed Evie but I don’t actually agree that Rita handled it well in the end.

Overall, I was disappointed with this story in the series. This was book 4 out of 5, with book 2 being only four hours and book 5 being only 2 1/2. This book was one of the largest parts of the series after book 1 which was all setting up for Hallow Hill and the magistrate job. We spent too much time watching Rita having breakdowns and yes, while this showed that not everything in her new life was rainbows and puppies, I would have like to see a quicker wrap up for finding Evie so we can have more time with post-kidnapping Evie and more Rita back in Town and in Court.

NOTE: I do want an emotional support bunny who sucks up your anxiety, even with side-effects, please.

Midlife at Midnight (Not Too Late #4)
Come on back to Hallow Hill, an enchanted little village in Cumbria, England. Rita Hayworth, a lovely 40’s something divorced woman, is a human magistrate to the paranormal world. She sorts out the High and Low Born of the Magical World from petty disputes to slavery and even murder. Court meets eight times a year. There are many intriguing residents and visitors to Court and Hallow Hill. Some are harmless and many are not. It is best to tread carefully in the Magical World.
Rita has a grown daughter, Evangeline. Evie does not know about the magical world and comes early for a visit. She meets Diarmuid (newly crowned Irish Fae King) and there is an instant attraction. Then Evie is kidnapped by a crazed kelpie. Rita needs help from all of her friends to find her daughter. Diarmuid is worried and Rita is wondering at the depth of their attraction.
Rita also has a full Court Meet with many strange cases. Rita has to navigate a complicated path through justice in the magical world. She often relies on the Fae Queens to help. Keir, a sephalian and Rita’s live-in boyfriend, helps keep the peace in court and in their shared world.
In this book we see Rita’s world falling apart when her daughter is missing. The residents of Hallow Hill and the Magical World lend help to find Evie. There is quite a cast of very interesting characters that weave in and out of Hallow Hill and Rita’s life. They receive help from the merfolk and King Diarmuid grants them the ability to walk on land. Evie is found but in perilous condition. It will take heroic measures of Diarmuid and his mother Queen Maeve combined save Evie. There will be a wedding at Beltane, but who is getting married?
This was one roller-coaster ride. So much going on. I am wanting to know more about Esme and Kagen. What will Rita decide about she and Keir’s relationship. A Jersey Devil is ‘helping’ Rita is mysterious ways. We also witness the Wild Hunt with Keir standing in as the leader. I could not put this book down. I am in love with Hallow Hill and all the residents, oh and I want a couple of fraighounds too!

Midlife at Midnight: Paranormal Women’s Cantasy (Not Too Late Book 4)- Victoria Dannan

This is the 4th book in the series and interconnects where book 3 left off. I strongly suggest to read these in order.
Several storylines continue throughout the book and continue to weave throughout the story, I especially enjoyed her daughter Evie’s rescue and her Fae Prince had some delightful twists and turns.
Rita’s role as Magistrate for the entire magical world continues to grow and she is much more confident and knowledgeable with her experience. The cases she rules on are interesting and the judgements surprising and justified, very impressive. She is definitely coming into her own and it’s wonderful to see Rita’s transformation.
The minute I begin each new book in the series I fall right back into the mesmerizing world the author creates. There are many surprising elements to the storylines, this world and a certain protective Griffin make the book even more addictive.
This awesome book was an amazing read and the next book hopefully has Rita admit to her soulmate and there is a bit more heat and romance between them. I love Hallow Hills and hope the series continues for several more books. There are many great characters in this world that could have their stories enhanced as well. This series is a definite amazing read that should not be missed.

I avoid to leave negative reviews but sometimes the dissatisfaction is too grand to look the other way.

From the beginning Rita’s maturity, forced relationships, unfinished scenes and world building felt quite questionable. However some characters and plots possibilities made me keep going with hope of a surprising outcome. But book after book I’ve seen this hope dying, specially after Evie coming to the story.

Not only Evie’s presence is annoying, it also doesn’t add anything truly significant and it steals Rita’s spotlight. Where’s the midlife woman time to shine we all were coming for?
The drama between Evie and Maeve is pathetic and Rita’s attitude around it is more disappointing (again showing how her maturity is questionable). Childish.

I will not highlight every point that pissed me off because 1. it would be too long, 2. don’t want to belittle the hard work that the author might have put within, 3. don’t want to waste my time anymore with this story.

I finished the book because I don’t like to abandon things but I was bored all the way to the end, barely paying attention to certain point.

I have little intention to read the sequel. (I had ZERO intentions but the prospect of Loki’s interaction got my attention — however, who am I kidding? It will go like the rest of things I thought “had future” here: nowhere)

The ending of this book wasn’t to my taste.

This books picks up right where the previous book left off. Evie has been taken and Rita is hysterical. I enjoyed the search for Evie and how that was resolved. I didn’t necessarily agree with some of Rita’s resolutions during her court cases, particularly in regard to the Kelpie, but it was interesting to read about the cases. I didn’t love how the wedding was handled and I felt like the drama would be a much larger deal to a young bride than is implied. This book was enjoyable but I didn’t like it as much as the previous books. There were also too many references to songs and people that I was clueless about. After awhile I had no interest in looking up what the references were about. Since I’m in my 40s, I’m guessing the songs were ones I was supposed to know but that isn’t always the case - while I may recognize the song, I have no clue what it is called or who sings it most of the time. I do feel as if the series could have been wrapped up in this book. However, I’m sure I’ll read the final book since I love Keir and would like to see him and Rita marry.

I love the Knights of the White Swan series, and I like the idea of an older heroine, so I've wanted to try this series. Unfortunately, I started with this one. The prior book must have ended on a cliffhanger, because this one picked up in the middle of a crisis.

The human Magistrate sorts out disagreements between the Fae. She is fairly new to the job and is still finding her way. She's already made some enemies and allies among the Fae. Interestingly, her shape-shifting Fae protector and bailiff is also her lover.

The crisis that begins this book is that the Magistrate's young, adult daughter has been kidnapped by a Kelpie that had a grudge against the Magistrate. It's clear to everyone but the Magistrate that a newly crowned Fae King is in love with her daughter and is leaving no stone unturned in trying to find and rescue her. Planning a wedding takes up much of the latter part of the book. The few court cases the Magistrate heard felt awkwardly thrown in, but I liked them. They were more fresh than the story in the rest of the book. I also liked the mother-daughter interactions in the book. The audiobook narrator did a good job keeping voices unique, as well.

A wedding to remember.

Much to Rita's relief her daughter is found and rescued from her captivity by the king. She is still unsure of Evie's involvement with the new king of the Irish fae and her hope is that the relationship will run its course when Evie goes back to school. Apparently Evie and the king have fallen in love and are determined to get married, and after the changes to her daughter after being saved by the fae Rita realizes that her daughter, as much as she hates it, is exactly where she belongs.
I absolutely adore all these characters. They are all well written, and utterly fascinating. Some action, suspense, and a happily ever after. Fantastic book, I laughed so hard I nearly cried.

Rita knew she would have enemy's with her job as magistrate, but she didn't think it would affect her daughter Evie! There is a crazy selkie that was kidnapped by a young Fae prince..Rita covered the case and found out the Selkie's out to get her! She gets another visit from her "Jersey Devil" and he tells her to stay away from water until the selkie is caught. But it was Evie that got caught! Guess what? The new King of the Scottish Fae is very interested in Evie..I mean VERY interested! Can the magical creatures help save The Magistrates daughter?
I love this series! And I LOVE Victoria Danann!

Love this series!

As soon as each new book comes up in this series, I’m on it. Our Magistrate is strong, smart, brave, and very real. Ooh, and her sweetie!
Turns out, like mother, like daughter. The daughter makes a surprise visit to visit the small English village where her recently divorced mother owns a successful antique shop. The magical village that her daughter know nothing about.
Read this if you like an Irish background and folklore, true love stories, and adventures that include many fantastic creatures and beings.
Our Magistrate is coming more into her own. and her rulings are just fascinating and just right.

As both a print and audio book this tale is puuurrrrfffeeeccctttt!

Spoiler alert- my heart broke for the Magistrate when her daughter was missing, and even more when she learned than her daughter had changed so much, but warmed by the finding of the love between the king of faery and the previously mortal girl.

I am a fan of true love and fated mates… this most recent episode of Fae court room drama has its share of upheaval, and reminders of how cruel people sometimes are to one another with curses and crossing boundaries… I love Rita’s decisions and punishments…

5 stars both for the story in print and the narration on audible!

First of all - this whole series is fun, original, and flat out amazing! I can't wait to reread the whole thing again!

Book 4 starts out where book 3 left off - warning, if you are not reading the whole series, you need to at least read book 3 so that you understand the start of book 4. For this reason only, I am giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars. For readers who have read the whole series, this story has some very interesting surprises and some nice wrap ups. The fun is not over yet though, so be ready for Book 5!
