How It Happened is Pamela Brown's first collection of poetry. It chronicles the author's personal descent into severe depression, and the struggle to find her way out. Written in darkness, this collection illuminates her path to the light.
While reading this poetry collection, I felt like I was underwater. That is, until the last part of the book, where I felt like I could finally breathe again.
HOW IT HAPPENED is a beautifully written poetry collection about the author's battle with depression, the struggles, the pain, and the healing. This collection perfectly portrays what a b*tch depression is, how hard it is to come back up when you've already fallen so low, and how lost you feel once you're finally up.
My favorite poems were "Whispers" and "Revelation".
My favorite lines: "But worst of all is having to lie with a smile, so that no one knows that you are dying inside."
"They leave my mind a flowerbed of lifeless flowers, asphyxiated from the weeds. And thoughts of you float away with the September breeze."
"...I’m long overdue for a day with a clear path."
If you're battling depression or have suffered from it in the past, I highly recommend you give this book a chance.
