Lochlan Ellyll #2

Dominion Required

Rate this book
The taste of Dark Magic was still on Lochlan's tongue. It had been centuries since he'd used the addictive power, but when Zemila's life was on the line, what choice did he have?

And now she won't even return his calls.

Little did he know, she had bigger problems.

Zemila is an Earth Driver. She shouldn't be able to move man-made objects with her mind. That didn't stop her from breaking every car window on the block when she thought her kidnapper was stalking her again.

But he is dead. She killed him. She had the nightmares to prove it.

All of that took a back seat when her brother went missing.

HS PAISLEY IS IN LOVE WITH STORIES. Growing up in a bi-racial blended family in Toronto, Canada, Paisley can remember well the shelves of books around the house. More importantly to her, she remembers the extensive collection of books on tape.

That’s right, books on cassette tapes.

She was obsessed. Listening to those stories, and writing her own, Paisley was hooked. From Harry Potter to Anne Rice, Jurassic Park to Kinsey Millhone, Paisley loved them all.

As a writer, basketball player, actor, pianist, and YouTuber, Paisley shuns the idea of staying in your lane and encourages others to do the same.

Ignore the nay-sayers and “don’t let the muggles get you down.”

“Life, It screws us all and we do the best we can with what we have. Life takes and takes and takes and when we have nothing left to give, when we are at the end of our rope, we end up here. And we do the best we can. Don’t judge him for that.”

Dominion Required is the second in the Lochlan Ellyll series and deals with the aftermath of the climax from the first book Magic Required. It follows two characters : Lochlan and Zemila as they try to stop forces at work and also try to regain normalcy in their after their traumatic encounters.
.
Okay, now that recap is out of the way, let's get into all the feelings and emotions. WTH was that ending?? It was going so good till the end and I was getting ready to finish the book and THAT ENDING HAPPENED!! @hspaisley are you trying to give a gurl a heart attack with that?? Let's rewind to the first chapter now.
.
First, I really loved reading about Zemila's POV in this book since I really missed her in the first. Her character had to overcome a lot of issues and reading about her struggle and her way of coping made her strong and real. Even though the book is not centred around romance, you get to see the depth of affection the Characters have for each other. (I won't spoil the pairs)
.
Second, I really loved the friendship between Cam & Zemila and Lochlan & Jenner. They were polar opposites, had strong beliefs and opinions about everything, but would lay their lives out for each other. Especially Jenner. Y'all already know he is my favourite character in this book (Not because he is amazing, but he is loyal to a fault and has the purest heart ever). Also, having to read about Lochlan and his brother trying to connect was something interesting. I really want to know what's happening with him and Jenner though!
.
“Don’t worry, Lochlan,” Jenner said, his lips curling into a satisfied smile. “We’re all mad here.”
.
Coming to the storyline, Characters and pacing, I think I really like what the author did with Zemila and her post traumatic self. It was heartbreaking yet heartwarming to read about her and her friends trying to be there for her. I really loved reading about m Qillian and Queen Anne, and would love to know more about them in the next book ! The first half of the book focused more on the Characters and the aftermath so the pacing was slow and not many things happened. But after that, it picked up and a lot of things started happening and the story gripped me well. The extra Characters introduced had different personalities and an air of mystery to them that piqued my interest. That ending was the perfect way to finish this book to be honest. As mad as I am with it, I am happy with that chapter and now I get to wallow in sadness and obsessively think about what Lochlan has to go through.
.
Overall, it was a really good continuation to the series with good plot-line, writing style, Characters introduced and a cliff hanger of an ending. If you haven't picked up Magic Required, I highly recommend you do! (Just for Jenner you can pick the book up and then obsess with me over how perfect he is. Thank you).
.
Thank you HS Paisley for the arc copy, which lets me give you my unbiased opinion!

Dominion Required by H.S. Paisley

📚 Hello Book Friends! DOMINION REQUIRED by HS Paisley is the second book in the Lochlan Ellyll Series. If you have not started this series yet… what are you waiting for? It is so good! There is magic, action, looooove, and awesome characters. In this book, Zemila continues to discover what her magic is. She is still reeling from the violent events she survived in the first book but now she knows what Lochlan did to save her and what it cost him. We are introduced to new characters in this second book who add more texture to the story. The book ends in a nail-biting finale and I am looking forward to the next book to find out what happens next. This is an exciting read that can be enjoyed by those who like books such as Ninth House or Serpent & Dove but a little bit more mature.

🙋🏼‍♀️ Thank you, HS Paisley, for sending me an audio copy for review. DOMINION REQUIRED by HS Paisley will be available at your favourite bookstore on November 26th.

Dominion Required is going to be my go-to recommendation for anyone looking for a killer fantasy series. Despite this being the second in a series that I had not read the first book in I was able to easily immerse myself into the world that HS Paisley so skillfully created. There were a few times when characters referenced details that I’m assuming took place in the first book and when that happened, I felt a little like I was eavesdropping on a phone conversation. I got the gist of what the characters were talking about but I knew there were some juicy details I was missing out on, but even with that small detail this was still a really incredible book.

The characters are what really made this book for me. While I can’t speak to character growth from the first book, I did enjoy seeing where the plot was going to take them in this book. Individually they all brought something amazing to the table and their group dynamic was especially entertaining. I was getting all sorts of Supernatural/X-men vibes. Without a doubt my favourite character in the book (and maybe my favourite character of 2020) is Jenner. Every scene with him was sensational. I was worried that at some point we were going to lose him and there would be no hope of him being featured in any of the books left in the series but thankfully he made it through. My fingers are crossed that we get even more from him in book three.

I try to go into books by authors that are new to me with slightly lower expectations in the hope that I can avoid disappointment but I don’t think it was necessary with this book. HS Paisley is a gifted writer and I am very much looking forward to see where she takes us and these characters in her next book.

May contain spoilers to book 1... read at your own risk. Thank you to H.S Paisley for this audio in exchange for an honest review.

I fell in luv with Lochlan and the crew in book one, but I didn’t realize how connected I became to these characters until I started to listen DR. From the first chapter my heart was broken to pieces for Zemila. She is having some serious ptsd and flashbacks of what happened in Book 1, and really who can blame her. You really get to see her side of things in this one and I luved that and made me really enjoy her growth through this story.

Lochlan... Ms. Paisley how could you! I wasn’t paying attention to the time I had left in the audio and towards the end I just kept thinking.. it can’t end like this.. it can’t end like this.. I was at my breaking point for our cinnamon roll... but thankfully you didn’t totally shred my heart to pieces.. and I can’t wait to see how that end situation will play out!

I really enjoy the narrators and the voices they use for each character. The narration flows beautifully and emotions are always spot on. I’m super excited for book 3 of this series! With the new characters we got to meet in DR, and with that ending.. I can’t wait to see what is to happen next!

This continuation of the Lochlan Ellyll series builds beautifully on the lore established in the first book, Magic Required. The stakes are higher as we start to see what was really behind the events of book one, and set Lochlan on a new mission. We learn more about his past, family, and the prophecy that lead to all of this.

I love all the characters who are so full and real that even characters who only appear briefly have defined personalities and histories. The “Scooby gang” Paisley has created are all so endearing and you really want to root for them all. (Especially Jenner, who should be protected at all costs!!)

I really enjoyed that this book switched the narration up from the first book only being in Lochlan’s voice, to half Lochlan, half Zemila, showing us more of her world. Showing how much stronger she is than Lochlan or any of hers friends (or even Zemila herself) know, and her power seems to be growing.

I cannot wait to see where this thrilling series goes and in the meantime, I’ll just be here eating my oatmeal.

What a great second book! Paisley has seamlessly continued Lachlan's story with the same humour and excitement, but also with the wonderfully authentic and relatable characters from her first novel (Magic Required). Dominion Required was a joy to read and was packed with adventure; but Paisley also adds depth to her characters by revealing a little more about their own stories and digging deep into their insecurities and desires. She also introduces some new faces who add greatly to the arc of the story. Again, I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

Thank you to the author for sending me the audiobook in exchange for an honest review!

I have to say I love this crew! I enjoyed all them them in book one but loved getting to know each of them more. I love their dynamic and all their personalities.

I was routing for Zemila and Loch the whole time. And for Zemila and her struggle with PTSD. I really connected with her struggle.

The world and the writing will hook you, but they characters will keep you wanting more!

“Dominion Required” is the second book in the Lochlan Ellyll series but it can easily be read as somewhat of a standalone. Throughout the book there’s enough backstory revealed that despite the fact I haven’t read the first book I could follow the story without any problems.
Lately I’ve been having troubles getting into a new book and have been binge re-reading old favourites. So I wasn’t sure I would be able to get into “Dominion Required” and for the first couple of chapters I wasn’t impressed. But the world seemed interesting and I kept on reading. Boy am I glad I did. This was one of the very few new books I finished this year and I got hooked. It might not be flawless but it’s intriguing and I plan on reading the first book soon and following the rest of the series.
The worldbuilding is sparsely done with enough details provided at the right time without being overwhelming. I really liked that as a lot of authors (especially new ones) tend to overdo this part and I find complex and prolonged explanations tedious. “Dominion Required” is a nice blend of urban fantasy and a touch of sci-fi sprinkled with element of epic fantasy. HS Paisley’s characters are fleshed out and intriguing enough that there was no need for page after page of filler in the form of complex magical system or detailed backstory of every character. The characters drove the story forward and with some minor exceptions were making smart and logical choices. For me this is important because one of the things I hate most is when a character’s tendency for stupidity is what drives the plot.
This was my first book by HS Paisley and I’m very impressed. I will follow her career with interest.

An eARC was provided by the author in exchange of an honest review.

Like the first, couldn't put it away once I started. The characters were interesting and I loved the groups interrelationships. It brought me pain and joy as anxiously waited for the next chapter. I glad to have discovered this new series. H.S. Paisley is talented and definitely among my favourite authors.

If you liked H.S. Paisley's first book, you'll love the second.

As expected the characters are what drag you in. When I read Paisley's work it feels like the characters are real, as though I could one day meet them in town (which would be so fun!) The plot is alluring with wonderful twists at the end. She's created a world that feels very real. It's easy to get absorbed into this book.

If you enjoy world building similar to Neil Gaimen's "American Gods" and exciting, sexy and fun characters such as those in the T.V. show "Lucifer" you should get this book.

I had the honour of receiving a free audiobook ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Dominion Required (DR) is the sequel to Magic Required (MR), which I reviewed earlier this year and loved! Ladies and gents, the sequel does not disappoint! While MR focused on Lochlan's story, DR adds Zemilla's POV. I love this choice as the events at the end of MR left Zemilla in quite the emotional mess and Paisley greatly demonstrates this through Zemilla's eyes.

It was great to see (hear?) Jenner again! I love this character! He's so funny and I think we could all use a friend like him <3 His interactions with Lochlan in particular are absolutely gold.

While Zemilla's dealing with her own stuff, Lochlan sets out to find his brother. I don't want to spoil here, but there's many a great, new revelation in this book. They're usually followed with more questions, though 😜

I loved this book and in my opinion the story is even better than the previous one. However, I do have one comment on the audiobook...the narrator for Zemilla's POV chapters does not use an Irish accent for Lochlan's dialogue, which was confusing at first but also strange because she did do the accents for the other characters. Furthermore, she also mispronounces Llewellyn's name in such a way that at first I had no idea who she was referring to and later I found it quite distracting. Sure, it may not be the most common name, but I wonder why the author didn't pick up on this?

Still, I definitely recommend this series and I can't wait for the next book!

Drag... hooked!

From early on in H S Paisley's new book Dominion Required,  I found myself hooked by the story and the characters within it. I was unsure if I would understand the world I was being thrust into as I began my journey here in book two but the way she describes what is happening around and within the characters, you get the background that you need to understand the current arch.

I am a huge fan of books that jump back and forth between narrations and H S Paisley does not disappoint. I highly recommend that you listen to the book in its audio format as it helped me to keep track of which of the main characters each chapter was focusing on.

For lovers of young adult books, magic, and mystery, Dominion Required is definitely a must read. I believe my fellow Lorien legacy fans will love the subtle hints of Pittacus Lore within her pages and the amazing legends that follow you throughout the book.

I will be watching what H S Paisley writes in the coming years as I'm sure she will continue to develop her own voice as an author for many years to come.

Dominion Required is the second book in the Lochlan Ellyll series which is written by H.S. Paisley. It is narrated from the dual POV of Zemila and Lochlan. I didn’t read the first book Magic Required but I still found it easy to understand what was happening although there was some terminology that I didn’t understand. I definitely recommend reading Magic Required first in order to know the backstory and the terminology.

This was the first book by HS that I have read and I absolutely loved it. I liked learning about the different characters and their powers. It was intriguing to watch Zemila as her powers began to evolve and go beyond what an Earth Driver should be able to do. I loved Jenner so much because he is funny and entertaining. I also enjoyed learning about the magical world that exists within the human world. The mystery, magic and action made this a very interesting story that had me hooked from the very start.

The ending was a huge surprise and has left me wanting more. I can’t wait for the next book.

I recieved an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion.

I was sent a copy of this book for an honest review

I throughly enjoyed my time with all the characters. Paisley was able to make you feel like you were right there with them and feeling their love for one another shine through the pages. If you like urban fantasy and want something different in regards to magic systems then I would highkey pick this up because you are missing out.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is so good! I am obsessed with Lochlan and co and need more of them. My main issue was the lack of Jenner content (only partially kidding!)

I did find the book moved quickly for the most part. I felt like I was speeding through and needed to take breaks to make sure the book lasted. Lol!

All I can say is if you hate cliffhangers, this book will ruin you. I need the next book RIGHT NOW!

I was thrilled to be an Advance reader for this book because it made me feel fancy... and then I was thrilled because this is a GOOD. BOOK. Y'all! I love the way we keep finding out more about the various characters' histories, as they build their relationships together. This story builds beautifully on the first book, and the pacing and plot development are fun and exciting. I can't wait for the third! If you like the Dresden files, I think you'll like these books!

“Stronger together,” he repeated.
“Not alone.”

Just when I thought I couldn’t love anymore of Hannah’s characters, she goes ahead and adds another insanely loveable brother to the cast.

This sequel may have been even better than the first, which I thought was not going to be possible. I’m super excited for the next book already! Very intense and captivating!

I absolutely love this book. Magic was hardly a light and fluffy book, but somehow it manages to get even darker, you get to meet some fun new characters (and some outright nasty ones too). And then the ending...

Let's put it this way, I'm glad there's likely to be more because that ending is horrible, in the best way.

Such a brilliant book! Such a great addition to Magic required.

The story telling as always was beautiful. The characters all grew with the book we got a further look into lochlans life and his friends. We got to see a gifter rediscover herself and her gifts after the events from book 1
The book has some great twists and turns and ends with you wanting more

I do like this series! It’s good:)) My favourite characters are Zemila and Queen Anne. If I had to make some suggestions I would say include more about Balor and make a prequel to the series because it would be so interesting to learn more about Lochlan’s backstory. Also, if Lochlan had more of a dark side because of Balors magic that would be a cool kick to the next book.

HS Paisley follows up her first novel with an equally engaging second book in the series. She expands on her characters from the first book, especially Zemila, while also adding new characters to the world. The book alternates perspectives between Lochlan and Zemila twining them together in an expert fashion to keep the story moving and building. Paisley clearly has a long vision for a compelling world of magic and adventure that she is slowly revealing over the course of each action packed book. The characters are authentic and easy to empathize with as they try to figure out their love lives in the midst of all the action. Characters like Jenner give breaks of lighthearted fun along the way and balance out some of the darker sides of Lochlan's story. Overall excellent read, you won't regret buying it!
