I really liked this book. It consists of three previously published chapbooks, all about the humane treatment of animals and regard for our environment. The poems are mostly written in free verse, with an occasional rhyme, and mostly short lines. Although the poet does not use many poetic devices usually found in poetry, his love for animals and the environment shines through and makes up for it. Many of the poems deliver a punch, others are heart wrenching. I loved Rally for a Whale. Lawrence says: "but find me one person on the east coast/who'll rally a whale/the way they would on the west coast./Maybe there are millions, but they're not in a karaoke bar." Well, William, I am one of those millions living in Florida and no, you won't find me in a karaoke bar because I'm shy, but I'll rally for a whale any time you want! I am very happy this book is on my bookshelf.

The poems in this book will leave a lasting impression and will color the way I view the natural world from here on. Almost conversational in nature, these poems reflect nature, politics, and social issues through the intimate view of one person. It's poetry like this that builds empathy between people.
