Will Angel solve his toughest case yet?

The Yorkshire author writes crime stories about Detective Inspector Michael Angel who lives a fairly happy existence with his wife Mary in the town of Bromersley in South Yorkshire.
I haven't finished this box set. It's unusual for me to give up on a book once I've started but I just can't finish this. It reads like farce. People jump from one emotion to another with no transition and are always flinging their arms around. The characters are too irritatingly one dimensional to care about. Definitely not for me.
Didn’t really get on with the lead character of these books, the sexist & racist comments seemed unnecessary to me. All I can say is that I’m glad I didn’t pay for the books.
Oh how much I enjoyed this set of novels. Good job really as I now have volumes eight to 21 next to read. It is such a rare event to find such a relaxed style of writing, every event is recorded in deliberate detail, even when driving his car, clutch pedal depressed, handbrake taken off, accelerator gently feathered, so much detail. Inspector Angel sticks to routine, always walking down the ‘green corridor’ to his office at exactly 08:28, but he has a wonderful detective mind and a hated Superintendent as a boss, who likes to take the plaudits after a solved case. He is very considerate and totally relaxed as he sets about solving his cases. Each book is a stand alone storyline but occasionally refers to previous characters and cases. The books do not roar along at 100 mph but Mr Silverwood has a definite modus operandi with the plots well thought out and engrossing, making them very readable. Looking forward to volume eight.
I am struggling with the first of the seven books. Unfortunately it is full of inconsequential drivel and inane immature similes. At present I do not find the character Angel one who is going to capture my imagination. I paid 99 cents for the seven books and probably just about got my money's worth.
Of you like columbo, you might like this. Some of the it's are taken direct from the series, ok 50 years ago,but true nevertheless. Asp too much bawling and similies, Not good
This was a group of seven books featuring Detective Michael Angel. I love this character! #1 The Missing Nurse - I had read this one and reviewed it on its goodreads page. #2 The Missing Wife - I had also read this one earlier and reviewed it on its goodreads page. #3 The Man in the Pink Suit - I think D. Angel is really blossoming into a great character. He is always yelling at his men - because they don't appear fast enough - although they might be in the next room. The Man in the Pink suit is an ingenius set up by someone who wants to kill two birds with one stone. #4 The Morals of a Murderer - I love the old lady who owns the dairy farm and says the Queen will only drink her farm's milk. This is a delightful addition to the series. In this one there is a man who falls into a vat of gin. The way Angel figures out who dunnit is great. All the clues are there, but I never got it 'til the end. #5 The Auction Murders - seriously these characters are many and varied and every one of them great! In this one a murder takes place at an auction house after the Lord and Lady's tea service is sold to our lovable dairy farmer lady from the previous book. Other murder ensue and we finally discover who it is when Detective Angel nabs them. #6 The Missing Killer - This one wasn't my favorite, but still an entertaining read. The man jumps out and yells "You can't have her, she is mine!" Then kills the guy. I found myself confused about the motives here. #7 The Umbrella Murders - this one was truly genius. The way Detective Angel comes up with the answer, almost but not quite in time, was incredible. Umbrellas with a cup of uncooked rice inside their folds hanging from the ceiling...amazing.
Onto the second set of seven books now and I think the series improves as it progresses. For a while, there was no mention of the wife. Angel is made more likeable by filling out his profile with some family and personal aspects. I don’t think the wife does much outside the home. I’d like to see her involved more which may happen at some point. Angel’s team members are also more in focus now. The youngest one seems smart and Angel has a soft spot for him. Angel may seem brusque at times but he is actually quite soft but he hates his immediate superior which seems understandable. I recommend the whole series to readers of this genre.
I have just finished reading books 1-7 in the series. The author has some good ideas for plots. The stories are quite exciting. But the writing is stilted, repetitive, and the continuity is weak. Similes are overused; this was annoying, but understandable at first because it formed part of Angel's characteristic speech, but later they were used as part of the general narrative. The writing needs proof reading/editing and printing errors need to be corrected.
This is a new author for me so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I wasn’t disappointed. Michael Angel is a larger than life character who tends to shout when things aren’t going well but is a fantastic detective. The books all have brilliant storylines and none are even slightly similar. You’re never quite sure who the murderer is and if you think you’ve got it…… you’re probably wrong. Absolutely first class writing with lots of quirks. On to Box Set 2.
I've enjoyed reading this series of books, and have often had a good laugh at some of Angel's sayings to his men, although many of them are very sarcastic! Each story is complete and interesting. I do wonder though, if the writer has had personal dealings with a Chief Inspector like Angel has, I couldn't imagine having to work under anyone that obnoxious. Would recommend.
Detective Inspector Michael Angel Series by Roger Silverwood - Books 1-7 Box Set. You definitely want Inspector Angel on your case. He is clever, unconventional, and solves the case. His boss is irascible and hard to take but gives Angel opportunity to do his unique form of solving the mystery. The location is a small town in the UK and his team jumps when he growls. Now I’m off to get Box Set 2 and continue the adventure.
The basic stories/plots are OK, but I have (had) problems with the "performance" of the characters in the book(s); like the DI acting more like a DS; and no help or working relationship with the superintendent (the super couldn't be that bad and hold that position). These comments of course are just my thoughts and opinion.
Lovely gentle crime mysteries, lots of humour and sarcasm
Some fabulous characters, i n the first book I found inspector Angel a bit too sarcastic with his similes, but either he mellowed or I got used to him😂 typical Yorkshire man, has to have the last word, (it's allowed..I'm from leeds) old fashioned policing, unusual crimes, a lovely read for cozy nights
DI Angel is determined to get to the bottom of things. He is a no nonsense, solver of crimes. With a warm heart. And many Eccentric characters and many cuppa teas!! The !mysteries are very good and he deals with several in each book. No gore, sex, religious beliefs or politics. Just good mysteries!! That's my cuppa tea!!
The title character was a bit off-putting at first and I wasn't sure about diving into a 7 book series with this guy. I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. I either got used to the main character or the author toned him down a bit, but now I'm friends with D.I. Angel. I do think I need to find a book to translate the Kings English to the U.S. English. 😁
A well written British crime series featuring a Detective Inspector who deals with murders, arson and anything else the the local criminals might get up to.
His dogged pursuit of criminals of all types does him credit, and results are usually achieved despite the efforts of senior officers who have an eye on budgets as a priority. An entertaining series.
I enjoyed this series and will start next group. However, I would have enjoyed them more if the author didn't put the stupid jokes in and the animosity that Angel showed to his staff, the stupid things he came out with etc. Luckily I can read through all this though it is annoying.
Downloaded this series of 7 books on my Kindle Unlimited option. Some of them are a little quaint presumably because dated some 20 years ago, but are all quite good whodunit and enjoyed them all. Very cheap reading (and I do read a lot!) so have now downloaded the next lot. Hope you all enjoy.
Delightful stories about an English DI in Yorkshire. Love his quirky, funny comments and demeanor. There are some editing issues- mainly leaving a space between the end of one scene & the beginning of another- but not enough to matter on rating.
A true British procedural. I enjoyed the books. There was mystery, humor, sarcasm and murders to solve. The only issue, and this is probably personal, is the relationship between Detective Angel and his wife. There didn't seem to be any emotional connection. The had their disagreements and times together, but I did not feel a connection between them. I would give 4 3/4 stars if I could. I would recommend the read.
Well, that was a kick and a half! Once you get used to Michael Angel's mannerisms and character, you appreciate how his mind works, his sympathy, compassion, and pursuit of answers. Seven stories with the same characters, nice writing, tales interwoven. Loved it!
I found these books quite hard work to get into. At times some of the comments are quite discriminatory. If you persevere with them, you understand the style of writing and realise that this is not the case. Not the best but readable.
Fantastic police, crime stories set in England. Carefully plotted and hatched. A perfect amount of levity, I laughed out loud at some of the Inspector's sayings. The vocabulary dictionary was great. A wonderful, delightful sat of great stories.
I really enjoyed reading this series, shame it's finished. I would definitely recommend that you read these books. Couldn't help but think of Angel as Dalziel from Dalziel and Pascoe. A really good read at a great price.
An addictive whodunit with a gentle dose of British Cop humour. So believable, so hard to put down . Looking forward to the next few stories by Mr. Silverwood, highlighting the wit and wisdom of a Taggart-like inspector.
The heading says it all, once you start reading these books you just get carried along with the story, intrigue and characters. Most enjoyable and always a little twist at the end. Pleased I have more to read.
Easy reading with some great characters. Each book leaves you wanting to know what Michael Angel and his team get up to next. Some of Angels sayings make you chuckle out loud.
I wanted to give this series a chance so I pressed on through the first book. It read like a student was describing the scenes from a mediocre television drama filmed by a roommate. Please find an editor who will give an honest appraisal before publishing.
Each story keeps you trying guess where the story is going. Well written every tale stands alone. No disappoints and I have read fifteen and am looking forward to the next seven.
Easy reading, but too cosy. Nice stories. Some nice characters but not very thrilling book. Ok if u like police/detective stories nice and gentle. But like Morse.
