Desires of a Monster

Rate this book
Submerged in ecstasy, blind with love… With every second we spent joined, I became less of my own person. Sometimes, I felt he was turning me into an extension of him, and if he ever ordered me to leave, I’d decay like a severed limb. Sometimes, I lay awake at night, empty inside, carved out and hollow, as if he’d already taken everything from me… As if I could only be whole while he was in me.

I didn’t know anymore if what I felt was love or insanity.

---
At nineteen, Rees’s life had come to an end. An orphan who loads ships for a living has no hope to die with dignity. Soon, he won’t be able to work, and then hunger might kill him before his illness can. He feels no fear or regret when he offers his body to the immortal Demon to consume.

Despite the colorful, terrifying legends surrounding him, the Demon is a practical and benevolent landlord. He finds joy in taking care of his estate, farming, raising horses, and watching the villages thrive. His only vice is seduction. He likes how human men crave, their warmth and scent, their primitive urges. He only lets his lovers stay for a little while. Human lives are transient after all, like shooting stars. Better to enjoy them while they shine brightly and send them on their way.
Until one day, a dying boy comes to the estate and changes everything.
---
Desires of a Monster first came out as a short novella in the spring of 2020. This is the full story, complete with Rees’s point of view.

if you know me well, you’d know this is probably something i’d avoid. i have never read straight up erotica where i intentionally read it because it's erotica. yes, i read smut, but the smut is a part of the book, not the center of the book. and maybe, actually, i have read erotica but i wasn't even aware it was erotica until i read it. anyways, that's irrelevant.

i’ve been unable to really read at all because i’ve been busy with university (taking 7 classes + peer mentoring 32 students + facilitating events for work isn’t the most flexible schedule) so committing to long books or books with a plot is basically impossible right now. it's one reason i haven't written reviews either. however, i knew that roe horvat is known for his smut/erotica so i was like, “what if i gave one of his books a chance?” and what better way to start than with some pnr mm erotica?

honestly, despite how little plot there was here, since i knew what i was getting myself into, it didn’t bother me as much as i thought it would. since i knew the book was short and the book is mostly erotica, i didn’t expect much development, let alone plot in general. for what it gave, it was enough. i read this in one sitting from 1-3 am and i regret nothing. i probably should have worked on some homework instead but scorching hot sex between a 1000+ year old demon and a 19 year old human boy that is dying was calling my name.

the dark rider, the demon, was so sweet. while possessive and claiming, he was never forceful. his confession towards rees has got to be one of the sweetest confessions i’ve ever heard. i’ve never read such beautiful love declarations. the way this immortal demon with a monster cock was willing to give up his immortality because for the first time since he was born did he sleep and it was because of a human boy.

“It’s me who is supposed to kneel by your feet, my love.” I rested my forehead against his belly. “This is my place, down here, at your mercy. You’re not supposed to beg me. You decide over me.”

“You can stay, Rees. You can stay however long you wish, and you can work in the stables, in the garden, or you can just be, left in peace. This is your home. This house, this room, this bed, it’s all yours. Even this heartless monster kneeling in front of you, begging for your forgiveness, is only yours. Everything I own and everything I am belongs to you.”

“Last week, for the first time in thousands of years, I slept. Holding you in my arms, I slept. You revived my soul. I taught you passion, but you taught me how to love. Every time we’re joined, and I heal your body, you bring me life. You are my life, Rees. Stay forever, darling. As my treasure, my soulmate.”

“Stay with me, my heart.”

like are you kidding me? that shit had me so swooning.

the dark rider gave rees forehead kisses, kissed his hair, carried him to bed, massaged his feet, would never take advantage of him, make sure he was well rested and fed, and would hold him all night. there’s nothing monsterish about him, and i loved it. rumors about him spread, yet they were some of the complete opposite. he hired women, men and gender fluid individuals with a harsh past and were provided a living. they were safe.

there’s nothing much about reed either besides how he’s dying and became desperate. he went up to offer himself to the dark rider because his cum is known to be magical and heal. cant say i blame rees to be honest, not to mention he found his soulmate.

i love how the dark rider felt challenged by him. since he never keeps his lovers and only fucks them, the character development between the relationship of the two was one i was looking forward to. since the beginning, the dark rider was intrigued, but it was adorable seeing how he was becoming worried about him, carrying for him, despite never feeling something like it before. rees was different than the dark riders previous lovers, and it was wholesome. he was willing to give him anything as long as it made him pleased when all he wanted was to help with the care of the horses and garden. when rees was in pain, the dark rider also felt it. when rees was feeling pleasured, so was the dark rider. they were one and a whole.

“You think you’ll be able to take a monster’s cock into your innocent body, Rees?”

the writing in this was beautiful. the sex was never repetitive, and i think that’s one reason i loved the writing in general. much of the time, some authors repeat the way they write sex. using the same words and actions, it’s as if they just copied and pasted the whole thing and maybe changed a couple words. roe wrote completely different actions and words, making every scene unique in its own way to the point where even the sex scene could be emotional.

“I don’t want an eternity of emptiness when I can have you instead. One day, we will leave this world together, hand in hand.”

so yeah, despite how this can be queasy for some, i enjoyed it. roe can write good smut, and his books theme/tropes can be uncomfortable for some, but yknow this is fiction and life is short so i’ll gladly dive into some smutty human/demon sex. at this point, if erotica helps me out of my reading slump, i might as well continue with it. if that bothers you, move on. nothing to see here.

This is erotica at its best: insanely hot but also beautifully written, with fleshed-out characters and an actual plot.

Yes, this book includes a great deal of graphic sex, what with demon horns, sparkling cum, and all. But calling it "demon erotica" misses the point of the healing, tenderness, friendship, and love that give this story an edge.

The Demon is lonely. He doesn't know it, but his soul is missing a part of itself.

Rees is dying (his illness is vaguely described, but based on his symptoms, I diagnosed him with leukemia). He gives himself over to the beast because he has nothing to lose.

Contrary to the rumors, the Demon is kind and employs lost souls, people battered and scarred by life, on his vast estate. He also has an insatiable sexual appetite that craves human men.

Rees is supposed to be just another man, a temporary diversion, until the Demon saves him, until Rees gives the monster a name ... and a heart.

I really liked all the secondary characters and the way Rees had a way with horses. I would have liked more interpersonal interactions and slightly less sex, but the MCs won me over.

The HEA promises eternal love and forever, the stuff of fairytales and dreams. Despite moments of pain and anger, there's more light here than dark.

Ok, the plot was not totally what I expected it to be, but It wasn’t bad! I enjoyed all the steamy scenes it had to offer but I also just found the story sweet in general. Plus it gives us both perspectives which is always nice. Overall It was a fine read that wasn’t too long and captivated my interest.

“my love for him made me whole.”

3.5 stars rounded up.

Roe Horvat can write some scorching hot smut... however, the hot sex scenes didn’t stop me from getting bored a couple of times. i was craving some actual deeper plot, BUT that’s my own fault, I KNOW this book is mostly classified as just straight up erotica.🤣

getting bored prompted me to put this book down and ignore it for a little while. i randomly picked this back up today and finished it in one sitting though…😳 i liked the last 80ish pages of the book the most and honestly they brought my rating up by a whole star. i think i just started feeling the connection between the mcs way more towards the end.

“i didn’t know anymore if what i felt was love or insanity.”

i LOVE Cariad. this damn demon with his magical cum was so sexy…🙈 he was also super sweet and surprisingly an actually good person.

the scene where the mcs confessed their love for each other was so beautiful?? i definitely didn’t expect to actually tear up, but i did. my sensitive ass couldn’t handle the sweetness…

“you revived my soul. i taught you passion, but you taught me how to love. every time we’re joined, and i heal your body, you bring me life. you are my life, Rees. stay forever, darling. as my treasure, my soulmate.”

“my love gave him the strength of an immortal.
his love for me gave me the heart of a human.”
🖤

anyway if you ever want to read some hot ass smut between a human and a demon - this book is for you.😉

4 'Demons can be romantic too' stars

So young and greedy.
Now, he was stained and claimed. Dirty. Mine.

I expected monster erotica and yes, I got that but also a very sweet and romantic love story. I say win-win 🖤😍

*swoon*

“My Lord,” he gasped and whined. “Take me…”
“Yes, darling, you’re mine now. I’m inside you. Let go and just feel.”

So we have
✅ one sexy incubus
✅ one virgin young man
✅ smutty goodness galore
✅ lots of dirty talk
✅ sweet moments
✅ a love story with HEA
And...
✅ it's free!

“I have never done anything outrageous like that.”
“Eating dinner in bed? Rees, you’re spending your nights with the Demon. Dinner in bed is the most innocent thing you’ll going to do here.”

I don’t know how Roe Horvat does it but his characters always steal my heart 😊💞

“Fuck me.” His voice was harsh. Alien. “Fuck me like a demon would.”
Oh, for the love of the Universe!

This was a re-read for me. I was in the mood for some really hot sex with a demon and this was the perfect cure for it. I still love this book as much as I did the first time I read it. I absolutely adore the mix of sex scenes with the really swoony romance, it’s so well done and this book is still a favorite of mine.

——————

5 ‘’Everything I own and everything I am belongs to you’’ stars

First things first, I don’t enjoy fantasy, I never have and I probably will never enjoy it fully. And I have never enjoyed fairytales, even when I was younger, they never were my cup of tea. BUT I haven’t been able to get into many books lately and me being very desperate to connect with a book, I thought, why not try a book marketed as a fairytale about a demon and a virgin boy (named Rees), if my regular reads don’t work, maybe something very out of my confort zone will work. And I adore Roe Horvat, so I thought why not, lets try it.

And damn am I glad to say this didn’t disappoint me. I don’t know what I really expected from this but I was expecting it to be all dark, gritty and angsty. I did expect that the sex would be scorching hot though, I have always adored Roe Horvat’s sex scenes, they’re just so damn hot and expecially in this one. Holy shit.

But you see, instead of a dark, gritty and angsty story, I did get my fairytale, the cutest, sweetest, most romantic and most aw inducing fairytale ever. This was so fucking sweet and romantic, god did I adore it for it. I do love me some dark and gritty stuff, but I love my sweet romantic books so much and this one was perfect on that front. God was it a fairytale, the most perfect one too. Full of a lovely and passionate virgin and a demon, who’s supposed to the all evil but is so fucking sweet and good. And full of so much love and so much hurt and so much comfort. God is this a romantic book.

These two are so fucking perfect for each other, I loved them so much, they made the best couple.

Damn did I love how the demon was portrayed, I love how he grew his horns and his torns and his wings (so his full demon form) when he was full of passion for Rees, that is so damn romantic. Loved it.

God did I love how everything was resolved in the end, it was absolutely perfect (and the most fucking romantic thing omg) and it left me so damn happy, I had the biggest smile on my face and I shed some tears too while reading it.

Also, the fucking sex holy fucking shit. God that was hot as all hell. I fucking loved the sex scenes in this so fucking much and there is so many rimming scenes and they were all brillant as hell. I loved it so much.

Lets be clear, this book probably would never have been a five stars for me had we been any other week in my life, but as it stands, it was so fucking perfect for the mood i’m currently in and it made me feel all the feels. I cried, I smiled, I laughed and I was really giddy for most of the book. It was the perfect book for me at this time in my life.

I've read every version of this story as Roe has released them and all I can say is every version got better and better.

I'm not going to try and explain why this book goes straight onto my favourites shelf because it's almost impossible to quantify.

It's as unfettered and as explosively sexy as most of his other erotica, and - like those books - there are so many more layers to it.

This isn't just heart racing, steam filled deliciously decadent desires, oh no, it's way more.

It's about taking risks, it's about finding a home, about discovering a hidden treasure, the freedom of submission and the power of love to fundamentally change your life.

It's glorious.

"Why do you think you would hurt me?"
"Because you make me burn, Rees, like I've never burned before. And I might sear your skin with the fire."

Just read it. That's the review. Top notch writing that after reading this author's works, I shouldn't be surprised anymore. Romantic, lustful, and definitely unwordly. The fantasy elements remind me of Madeline Miller's Circe: something you can grasp without being too much.

PLEASE NOTE: This review should be under the full book version, rather than the earlier novella! Sorry if this causes any confusion!

4,25 stars

This certainly is exactly what it promises: an erotic fairytale, with emphasis on the former.

I never read the earlier shorter and single POV version of this novel, so I went in totally blind.
Roe Horvat unapologetically enjoys himself in this fantasy setting, and you get what it says on the tin:

1. a young, terminally ill, beautiful virgin
2. a sinfully wicked demon, who thrives on sex with humans
3. a LOT (I reckon about 80% of the book) of incredibly hot, very dirty sex ranging from the tender to the rough and wild. Scorching, sizzling, off the charts chemistry and sex - it's all there!
4. and two men (well, one man and a demon) who start having feelings for each other that go way past their carnal ways with each other.

What I really liked:
- Rees’s sexual firsts and how thoughtfully the demon deals with them
- the demon’s dark side (not to mention that forked tongue and its 101 uses!)
- the author’s boundless erotic imagination
- the touch of magic involved in the sex
- the whole thing about the demon’s name (basically he’s nameless)
- the rather unusual age gap of a few thousand years. 😂

Yes, maybe some things could have been explained further, but tbh, I didn’t really care too much. In the ‘erotica’ category this certainly gets all the points. And the fairy tale scenario feels comfortable and recognizable. I guess it has the vibe of Beauty and the Beast without leaning on it too heavily. Past all the sex, this is a lovely tale of love and how it changes the MCs for the better.

However, I would have liked Rees to make it a bit more difficult for the demon towards the end. But then, with the way these two are virtually co-dependent on each other, that was probably never going to happen.

Have fun and read on a cold winter’s day! You won't need the heating on.

*zero oversized stars*

Let’s start with talking about dicks.
There are a few things in romance I don’t appreciate. Big, thick cocks - yes, please! And if one has magical powers/spunk. Okay, cool. This is fiction and paranormal on top of it. But why the heck did this particular one has to be incomparably oversized?? I mean:

Fully hard now, it was almost the size of his forearm.

Wow! It was off-putting to be honest. Although, a dick the size of ones forearm is outside the realm of my imagination anyway, it had me pausing there for a second; and I wonder why an author chooses to give a character (a demon) such colossal equipment to sexually interact with a human. Wow! - I can’t stress that word enough.

**********
I really tried to get into it again after that but I failed. At first I was even kind of captivated by the story (as little as there was besides the sex fest). But I need to declare defeat.

Sometimes, the power of my passion terrified me. With every second we spent joined, I became less of my own person. Sometimes, I felt he was turning me into an extension of him, and if he ever ordered me to leave, I’d decay like a severed limb. Sometimes, I lay awake at night, empty inside, carved out and hollow, as if he’d already taken everything from me…As if I could only be whole while he fucked me.
What had he turned me into?
I didn’t know anymore if what I felt was love or insanity.”

This is my favorite Roe Horvat book by far. An erotic fantasy about a human and a demon, this demon is distinct because he loves to fuck humans. The Dark Rider has lived for thousands of years and has had thousand of lovers. He changes lovers as soon as he gets bored with them and they never last longer than a few weeks.

“I fucked human men.
I enjoyed the warmth of their bodies, their primitive urges, their scent and taste, the way they wanted. I liked them eager, grateful, and pliant. Seduced.”

Rees is an orphan who works on the docks loading ships. He's dying of a wasting disease. He's heard rumors that the Demon's cum has healing properties and offers himself as a lover for that purpose. What begins as a transactional relationship—the Demon motivated by lust and Rees by a desire to get well—turns into a beautiful and scorching hot romance.

Roe Horvat is famous for writing the most decadent smut, but I was blown away by the tender and sweet nature of this story. There is a perfect balance of characterization and relationship development. Rees is different from all of the Demon’s previous lovers. In addition to being incredibly beautiful, Rees also intrigues and challenges him intellectually. And for the very first time, the Demon feels his heart engaged. He starts to care and worry about the wellbeing of his lover. He feels pain when Rees is in pain and doesn’t want him to die. But not to worry, it’s not all feels. There’s still an abundance of Horvat’s unadulterated smut.

“I aimed the carved cock so the head of the shaft would massage his gland, then pressed it back inside him. I fucked him harder, stabbed his hole with the fat shaft. My left hand on my cock would’ve been insufficient had I not felt what he felt. I drew my pleasure from him. A stream of rhythmical “ahs” left his mouth, and a deep blush spread over his cheeks and neck. His hard cock waved in the air, and he shouted, a long piercing cry, while I shoved the carved hard wood in and out even faster, reaching deep into his gut.”

In the end, Desires of a Monster is an epic love story between a demon who is willing to sacrifice his immortal power in order to heal his one and only love.

“Last week, for the first time in thousands of years, I slept. Holding you in my arms, I slept. You revived my soul. I taught you passion, but you taught me how to love. Every time we’re joined, and I heal your body, you bring me life. You are my life, Rees. Stay forever, darling. As my treasure, my soulmate.”…
I’d sacrificed my immortality. Yet it didn’t feel like a sacrifice at all.”

Damnnnn he really knows how write some erotica!! I really truly enjoyed this book. Reese is a sick and dying 19 year old living in poverty and misery. The Town he lives in has a demon that also resides there. Most people are scared of him a spread nasty rumors, but in reality he is kind and just wants men to fuck and keep his bed warm for a short period of time. The preachers hate him but he keeps the town running so they can’t do shit. The demon is actually kind and wants the town to Prosper and those in it. Reese had never been scared of I’m and heard his semen had healing properties. He goes to him and the demon doesn’t promise him it will cure him but says he’ll help. Throughout this period of time they start to fall in love and have lots of tender and sweet moments. Reese is kind and beautiful inside and out and Cariad (the demon) was amazing. Also did I mention that this is an erotica and super hot? Like filthy kinky flaming hot sex almost every chapter. But don’t forget the sweet parts, because they are definitely there and so amazing.

What an epic romance!

No one can write deep, heart wrenching connections between their characters better than Roe Horvat. He gets so deeply inside these two, and they bare everything to us. But Desires of a Monster is more than a romance.

If you have the time to read Roe's original short story Desires of a Monster: A Short Story first, it's well worth it. The whole way through reading this extended version, it was like I was revisiting a favorite tale, familiar characters, and relearning everything Roe is telling us - but in a richer, more intimate way.

Desires of a Monster truly is a fairy tale. Fairy tales always have morals, and these are some great ones: Love truly heals Rees, and brings meaning to the life of the Dark one. There should be no shame in pleasure. Pay no attention to those who judge you, as Lillian tells Rees, “‘Only someone who lived your life can judge you for yours righteously.’” Lots of good feelings here, and so important in 2020.

And yes, of course the Master/slave relationship is spectacularly exquisite! The sheer need and desire between these two characters, the way they evolve over the course of the story, and how beautifully Roe Horvat explores their changes, is something I can’t recommend enough.

I feel warm and happy and completely sated, this is one very satisfying novel.

Deliciously filthy and hot as hell. This was a never-ending fuck-fest, but the plot was actually very nicely developed as well, and had this fairytale quality that I absolutely loved.

Beware: If you like reading in public places, this is definitely not appropriate material, unless you want to cause a spectacle by bursting into flames. NSFW AF! 🔥 🔥 🔥

4.5 stars rounded up, because it made me feel hot and bothered for hours. Whew. If Horvat’s other work is this good, I need to check it out ASAP.

decently smutty one-handed read.

i like the twist and honestly if this had been longer and more fleshed out i likely would be rating it higher.

thinks escalated between them quickly which was a tad rushed but it was sufficiently hot that i sort of forgot it was instalove.

if it tells you anything, immediately after i finished it i looked to see if there was a follow up so... i liked it well enough to want more.

not bad for a freebie.

At nineteen, Rees’s life had come to an end. An orphan who loads ships for a living has no hope to die with dignity. Soon, he won’t be able to work, and then hunger might kill him before his illness can. He feels no fear or regret when he offers his body to the immortal Demon to consume.

I wasn‘t sure what the hell to expect this time because from the title I thought of something completely different, something like an anguished, ugly and dark story .
However ...this ‘fairy tale’ as I call it is extremely filthy and hot but at the same time the writing is brilliant. It gives me the necessary feels, chills and tingles that I’ve come to expect of Roe Horvat. He always provides that something extra, that something more and unexpected in each book that he writes. Just love it !!

5 stars.
This was my first demon-erotica (I'm not a fan of demons usually) and I enjoyed it immensly.
I'm aware that my enjoyment is deeply tied to Roe Horvat's amazing writing, though.
Also, this wasn't dark but romantic and sweet, and so very touching. The author calls it an erotic fairytale.

No other author could fill a book with so much sex, and still add a sweet storyline, feelings, character development, interesting side characters, and a beautiful romance in just 170 pages, making it a phantastic read.
Although the book was basically (I'm guessing) 75% sex, every sex scene was magic, and I enjoyed all of them, never getting bored.

I love Roe Horvat's writing, I'm in awe of his ability to let me feel such a strong connection between the MCs although many of his books are novellas.

🌬 not bad i guess

”I’m sick. The illness is eating my blood. It will kill me within months.”
The smell, the smudges under his eyes…that was why he was different. He wasn’t here because of lust or greed. My interest piqued, I leaned forward in my armchair and put the pipe on the side table.
“Why do you think I can help you?”
He swallowed, the uncertainty in his face barely noticeable. “They say your seed heals.”
I chuckled. “You dismiss the rumor that I kidnap and rape men, which sounds perfectly plausible to most people, but you believe that my cum has healing powers? You truly think that letting the Demon fuck you will save your life?"

the plot is, rees come to be fucked by this demon dude bcs hes sick and he heard his magical jizz can cure him

”It’s outrageous, isn’t it?” I caressed his ass cheek. He really was flawless. “The only true magic in this ugly world doesn’t come from God’s hands but from Demon’s cock.”

yes cariad & rees r cute sometimes but maybe its coz the setting is not my cuppa, there were more than few boring moments

"My love gave him the strength of an immortal.
His love gave me the heart of a human" I'm awwing like an idiot right know. 🥰❤💜

This is a short erotic story about a human and a demon, the last one being inmortal always took his pleasure in different men and then he met Rees, the said human who had no fear of him or his form, who was beautiful and loved him whole. Since it was erotica depth was not it's strength, but it did give enough info for the reader to be connected to the characters, it was also an interesting world that I would have liked to know more about.

It was a lovely hot read and it had the perfect length to not tire the reader with all the sex. Lovely! 💜❤

4 Loved it Stars!! ❤️ This was dark and sinful; yet it was a sweet romance between 2 unlikely MCs. It was erotica at Roe Horvat’s best.. 🔥🔥🔥. Still it was not just about the sex but so much more. It was about love, soulmates and home. 😍 Highly recommended!!

I have read earlier versions of this story, but I'm so glad to have gotten the final, full-length version that also includes chapters from Rees' POV!

The Dark Rider is a demon, immortal and thousands of years old, who controls vast areas of land and has plenty of fun in the evenings. Rees is a young, innocent human who is slowly dying, but, unlike most of the townspeople, is not afraid of the demon. Rees goes to him freely, hoping to be saved, but the two find much more than they had anticipated once they're together.

Roe Horvat writes erotica very, very well. And I love that he has a great way of writing such hot moments, and then follow it with something so tender. For as intense as Reese and the demon are together, there are also sweet moments, and I love it.

This has a fantasy/historical type of feel to it, and I loved it all very much. If you first read this as the short story back in the spring, get this to enjoy the full story between Rees and his Cariad.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
