Bucket to Greece #9

Bucket To Greece Volume 9: A Comical Living Abroad Adventure

Rate this book
Abandoned in a bucket…to new adventures in Greece

The delightfully comic account of a British couple and their imported cats starting over in a new country continues in Bucket to Greece Volume 9. Violet Burke installs herself in the apothiki and gets on her bicycle to find cleaning work in the village. Her arrival puts Edna’s nose out of joint, but offers some amusing verbal play as she winds Captain Vasos up with some unique translations of mucky fat and spotted dick. Sampaguita finally moves in with the local undertaker, moonlight carnage erupts in the Bucket garden and Barry suspects that Vi has something to do with the disappearance of Cynthia’s vile cat.

When Marigold flies off to England to visit Geraldine, Victor keeps busy by trying to interest a strange couple in Leo’s old house and hosts his first ever cookery class for culinary challenged expats. Victor’s Greek neighbours make it their mission to keep him well fed, whilst one villager gets it into her head that Victor is an available object of fancy. If you’re a fan of Greek travel and culture then the Bucket to Greece series is a must, with a bucketful of laughs along the way.

I came across the first in this series on Amazon Unlimited, having just finished a similar book by someone spending a summer in Italy. While my usual genres are crime, spies and travel, I thought that Bucket to Greece Book 1 sounded like a pleasant, light-hearted change. Nine books in the series later, my husband was beginning to suspect impending madness...........never have I previously been known to spend minutes trying to suppress frequent fits of the giggles and I feel really disappointed that I have come to the end........hopefully, just until Victor writes a 10th book in the near future. These books are very authentic in terms of village life in rural Greece and the characters are brilliantly portrayed

Another lovely, lighthearted, fun read.

It was lovely being back in the Greek village of Meli, amongst all the regulars you've got to know through this series.  Each book is so easy to get back into; like being back with old friends.  You can't wait to see what they've been doing since the last installment.

There's certainly plenty to keep your interest in this volume: The apothiki has now been completed; renovated, and all ready for Violet's impending arrival.  Victor has been working helping in the local shop, and now he's going to try his hand at running a few cookery classes.

Victor's other half, Marigold, is popping back to the UK to visit her pal Geraldine.  Now Marigold's away, Victor plans to resume penning more of his adventures in his proposed moving abroad books. At this point in the book, he is starting his second volume, and his completed first book is not yet published.  In reality, there are already 16 books in the series, and more on the way.

Again, I had so many chuckles while I was reading this.  Hilarious!  Another lovely, lighthearted, fun read.  I feel my reviews for these books are getting a bit repetitive; I'm saying some of the same things-but they affect me the same way, and I just can't resist getting on with the next one.  Keep them coming!

Victor’s mum Violet takes centre-stage in this book. Wise, mischievous, vulgar, plucky, blunt, noble…how many facets can a single character have?

- “There’s no sense to know what anyone is saying, most of it is likely nothing more than hot air and blather. It’s the conversation that counts, it doesn’t matter what someone’s saying.”

- “My mother has been playing the esteemed captain for a fool by teaching him the incorrect meaning of English words,”

- “There, how does that feel?” “A bit peculiar, lad, if I’m honest. It’s a good long while since I had anything rubbing up against my crotch area.”

- “I have to confess the sight of Violet Burke on a bicycle was one I had never expected to behold.”

- “you daft apeth”

- “I’ll put back every penny my dead husband fleeced from their post office accounts if it’s the last thing I do.”

I wasn’t happy about Kouneli’s fate, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he turns up in the next book.

Loved this Bucket to Greece, volume 9. I have read every one of these books regarding Victor and his wife and family. The tales he relates, about his village, are often hilarious but also show an insight how a Greek village lives day to day. The recipes he describes sound very tasty.

I must admit to being rather surprised by his long lost mother and am not sure I could have welcomed her under my roof the way that Victor has, it just goes to show what a kind and thoughtful man he is.

I look forward to the next volume of his life in the Greek village that is now his home. Don’t make me wait too long Victor.

Beef and olives for tea it will be...

I have been reading Victors books through lock down/this covid madness, I enjoy the way he writes about himself, a little bit snobbish but surely we all have standards similar to his. (I imagine him to be a bit like Frasier) I have loved following his life in the Mani, enough to have emailed him after completing the first 7 desperate for the next instalment and I seventeen disappointed, give his books ago if you feel the need to get t away from it all. Hurry up with volume 10, missing you already 😉

As usual I really enjoyed Victor's next installment of their adventures in Greece - I love to read this type of book after reading some heavier thriller ones - it brings me back down to earth to real life. I still love his style of writing about everyday situations and no name dropping/bragging etc just the days in the life of 2 expats warts and all.
Await his next book with bated breath :)

Love this series, lover the characters!

Great characters, lovely setting, I want to say a “safe” read as long as everyone understands, not boring, just a safe place to be for as long as it lasts. I’m jealous of those who are just beginning it, so much fun ahead!

Bucket #9

Very fun read! The author is very descriptive and makes you feel like you’re a resident in the neighborhood. Victor seems a little full of himself but is well meaning. I’m looking forward to the next book.
