The Ingenious Trilogy #1

The Ingenious and the Colour of Life

Rate this book
From a beguiling new voice in contemporary fantasy/sci-fi comes an astonishing novel about a group of mysterious teenagers with the ability to change lives...

Ever since young Milly Bythaway can remember, she’s had to hide who she really is – dumbing down an extraordinary genius in order to blend into the background. Tai Jones has been abandoned by his mother and forced to live as a homeless wanderer on the streets of London, but the appearance of a stray cat helps him realise he has a special gift: he can see thoughts and emotions of others in stunningly beautiful colours. A gift that is both wonderful and awful.

When the teenagers are brought together by a mysterious old scientist for their own safety, they are told of a common and forgotten past. One of secret experiments, and a missing family that they yearn to find. But they soon hear of the disappearance of another child, the youngest, and are faced with an impossible dilemma. Saving themselves will require confronting their deepest fears – and risking their very sanity...

But if they can muster the strength to overcome adversity in inventive and ingenious ways, it will bring about the most extraordinary and unexpected change. In the end, the children must work together, unleashing the full force of their intellect and genius, in an epic battle of the world's greatest minds.

The Ingenious and the Colour of Life is J.Y. Sam’s beautiful and heart-rending debut – a story that explores the fragility of human nature, with a dash of science, culture, and the natural world, engaging both mind and heart in an eclectic blend of genres.

In a Nutshell: WOW! Doesn’t feel indie. Doesn’t feel like a debut work. Doesn’t feel much YA! Enjoyed almost all of it and eagerly awaiting the next in the series. This is the first of a planned trilogy.

Story Synopsis:
Milly Bythaway has always been told to hide her genius and dumb down her answers in school so as to blend in the background. Tai Jones lives as a homeless boy after his mother abandoned him. Calista Matheson has always known that she has only beauty and no intellect, until her crush Jake Winters unlocks her hidden potential for computers. After Jake suddenly disappears, Calista falls back on her computing prowess to find out what happened. Meanwhile, a mysterious old scientist contacts Milly and Tai. The teenagers are told a dark secret from their past – one that reveals the source of their intellect, and also brings to light a danger to their lives.
The book is written in the limited third person perspective of various characters.

Where the book worked for me:
🌹 I am not a big YA Fantasy fan. Nor did I like the cover much. What drew me in was the blurb. The plot was such that I couldn’t resist grabbing this despite my ARC backlog. Luckily, the author does complete justice to the potential shown and delivers on every promise. I loved the unique storyline.

🌹 Full marks to the prologue – perfect! (I have decided I am going to praise every book for an impactful prologue that doesn’t simply rehash subsequent events but generates the right level of curiosity for the plot.)

🌹 The book combines quite a few genres but does so without overpowering each other. Fantasy, sci-fi, drama, crime thriller, coming-of-age,… all are fairly well done.

🌹 I enjoyed how the author took time to introduce each of the key characters in the initial chapters. Rather than bogging us down with too many characters within a few pages, she goes into detailed backstories, one main character at a time. This makes it so easy for us to remember and understand them.

🌹 The main characters are amazing. I loved how the author allowed their individual personalities to shine throughout the book, rather than modifying their behaviour as per the needs of the plot. I was prepared to hate Calista as she seemed the typical bimbo stereotype at the start. Boy, was I wrong! She brings the perfect touch of humour to an otherwise serious story.

🌹 Though 400+ pages long, I didn’t feel its length for *most* of the journey. The writing is fast-paced and engaging.

🌹 There are quite a few animals in the story, and all of them, from the largest to the smallest, are memorable. At times, we get to read their third person povs as well. Of course, some of their perspectives are farfetched. But as this is a YA Fantasy, I yeeted my disbelief and went with the flow. Loved every single one of them!

🌹 The writing is just perfect. Lyrical where necessary, the story flows smoothly without going overly verbose or too plain.

🌹 There are myriad subtopics covered in the book because of the characters’ interests. But each is written in such a way that I couldn’t help but admire the author’s attention to detail. Be it music or genetics or computing or medicine, every topic feels like it has been handled by an expert in that field. At the same time, nothing feels like it has been infodumped. Simply brilliant!

🌹 The ending! It is a cliffhanger, but what a wonderful one! It does not leave the current arcs incomplete, and yet it creates enough of a suspense to make me want to throw away my entire TBR and rush to the second book. If only!

Where the book could have worked better for me:
🌵 The backstories of two of the characters (one towards the middle and one near the end of the book) were a bit too lengthy for my liking. While both were interesting, they caused me to lose my momentum and diluted the impact of the book. In all fairness, I did try to think of an alternate approach that might have worked better, but couldn’t do so for the second story. The first one could have been much shorter, thereby reducing the overall length of the book as well.

⚠ While the cover is good in its own way, I don’t think it represents the book properly. I, for one, wouldn’t have picked this up in a bookshop based on that cover art. Luckily, the blurb appealed to me, otherwise I would have missed out on this great read.

All in all, this wasn’t a perfect book, but it was a highly memorable one for me. It surpassed all my expectations and gave me an impactful storyline coupled with interesting characters, including a few animals, and some ethical dilemmas.

This book might work well even for adult readers, as long as you keep in mind that it was written for the teen crowd and you, the discerning adult reader, have to be forgiving of predictable plot points. 😉

The length and the target age group might make you assume that you can speed read your way through this, but I would recommend reading every page, There are plenty of hidden clues that you might miss out on if you zoom through this work.

Definitely recommended to Light Fantasy fans and YA fiction fans. This indie gem deserves a lot of attention. Waiting for Book Two!! 😍

4.5 stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through ‘Voracious Readers Only’ and these are my honest thoughts about it.

The book is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Note: The content gets pretty dark at times, and there are a few animals deaths also. Sensitive readers might want to keep this in mind.

Never before have I read a debut novel with such poise, elan and finesse! Ms. Sam nails it!! Since I don't read YA fantasy, it started off as a skeptical exercise, I didn't know what I was in for. Surprisingly, the plot line drew me in, and hooked me with its ingenuity (pun intended). Seven gifted children, born in a Government controlled genetic modulation experiment, and once separated, how their destinies contrive to bring them together to fight an unknown threat to their existence and their creators.
Characters are built up nicely, and the ethical question of scientists playing God are treated with the right dose of abhorrence - while that experiment gone wrong is the base of the novel, it doesn't justify the deed, it highlights the pitfalls of doing it.
Ms. Sam has excellent grip on the prose, the language is not overly flowery but comfortable in its eloquence. Her research is fantastic, be it technology, medicine or marine - she explains everything with authority and confidence.

While I felt it could have been a little shorter, but that's not an important one, I'm already looking forward to the sequel!!

Read this book with your head and your heart.

As a huge fan of Eoin Colfer and Charlie Higson it was like this novel was written for me at first glance, but now after finishing it I can say that it outshines them all in my estimation. An impressive debut full of a rich tapestry of description and well-rounded, relatable characters. The thematic elements around nature, themes of good and bad and how love prevails make Ingenious stand out from the usual crop and really touch you in a deeper way. After three chapters I was hooked and in tears by the final page. Thank you so much for writing this book, I think everyone should read it. Now I just want to read the next one!!

Wow, what to say about this book without spoiling too much?

The author takes her time to introduce the MC's at the beginning of the book, all in separate stories. At the same time, I felt they must come together somehow, and they did. Once it was clear why, the story unfolded rapidly.

I think the author has put a great deal of energy into research, as the medical and technical information (no infodump) read solid and believable.

Sucked in from the start, I only faltered when a new character was introduced a fair bit into the story and her background was thoroughly explained. Having said that, it makes sense at the end of the book, to know the details of her life, but at the moment of reading I was pulled out of the flow, If only temporarily (hence the 4.5 and not the 5 star).

Cannot wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed this - what a spectacular debut!

The characters were instantly likeable and the writing was incredibly intellectual but in an inclusive way (I feel like I actually have some knowledge about computing science now, haha!) There was so much beautiful and lyrical prose too that painted such vivid imagery, and that helped to balance the scientific and medical jargon. One excerpt that I really loved and stood out to me was: “The melody rolled and rumbled, like storm clouds brewing and gathering at speed - hurtling towards the inevitable.” (p.193)

I read it slower than my usual reading pace as I wanted to savour every last moment - particularly when we were introduced to Mei Hui. She was by far my favourite character and I really appreciated the pace change that her introduction provided.

This book really did have everything; joy, action, heartbreak and wit (there were so many humorous moments from Calista too!) and left on such a cliffhanger with still so many questions unanswered; I’m already itching for the sequel!

I received an ARC of this book for an honest and objective review.

This story intertwines the lives and fates of a loveable group of young adults who are about to learn what is truly unique about each of them.

The story starts off at a run with the drama starting on page one. The Ingenious and the Colour of Life has all the characteristics of a thriller - compelling and well-developed characters, an imminent threat, ongoing and well-paced action, and plenty of twists. The author takes a very unique, ecological approach, incorporating not just the human elements but the relevant aspects of the animal world as well. In this endeavor, the author demonstrates a keen understanding of a wide range of topics that she gracefully ties together: biology, psychology, computer science, culture, and metaphysics.

But the focus of this book is not just the action. The author has a unique, holistic approach to detail that engages all of your senses. She has also left little, unexpected gifts throughout the book, which takes your sensory experience to a whole new level. If you read this book, you’ll know what I mean.

There are times when the many details slow the pace of this story; however, if you have patience, the depth and development certainly pays off in the end. The characters in the story are dynamic, loveable, and each has an important role in the overall story that comes together in an intense and dramatic way.

This is a well written, well-developed adventure that I highly recommend.

This is a debut??!! 😳😳😳

What an absolutely beautiful story and all-around amazing read! This is definitely going to be one of my Top 15 2021 favorites. Yes, it's THAT good.

I loved everything about this book! Sci-Fi Fantasy mix with writing so good you are LIVING the words. I love how the author incorporates nature throughout this story. The lives the animals and insects lead, the feelings they have and how significant every creature is...down to the lowliest crane fly.

There is just so much to this one I can't adequately express all the feelings and thoughts I have. This is definitely one you will WANT to read. I can't believe I'm left with that cliffhanger though and how excruciating it will be to have to wait for the next book. 🤣🤣

This is an entertaining and refreshing story to read! I thought the seven characters would be too many to follow, but Julie wonderfully gave each one a different voice. They each have a past and a purpose, there is adventure, flaws & faults, and true friendships made. Thank you to the author, Julie, for a gifted copy. This is my honest review.

A wonderful narrative by a debut author. Definitely recommend!

Because of the rapidly advancing study of human genetics, people may not always be as they at first appear. A deeply secret government project—dubbed Project Ingenious—has created seven prodigious offspring, each of whom is unaware of the implications of the skills with which they were born. When knowledge of the project is unintentionally leaked, a nefarious outside force sends an undercover assassin to destroy the project’s progeny. However, as the children from Project Ingenious begin to realize the true extent of their gifts, they must team up to stop those wishing to destroy the project and save the world in the process.

Intricately and thoughtfully written, this story unfolds with detailed precision, keeping readers guessing from the very first pages. Several characters are introduced in quick succession, the link between them only becoming apparent several chapters later. The story’s central plot is reminiscent of the X-men series where Dr. Xavier protects and educates his gifted and misunderstood wards, creating a skeleton against which this riveting story is built.

Quotations of famous music and literature appear throughout the narrative, as do specific references to complex concepts across the spectrum of human knowledge. Each character has overcome hardship in one way or another, increasing their resilience and problem-solving capabilities. Representing several cultures, these teens develop a bond that runs deeper than family, connecting them through love and shared experience.

Cinematically written, this captivating mystery blends science fiction and reality to investigate the staggering possibilities that come from genetic alteration. Investigating the differences between innate and engineered intelligence as well as the blurry line between good and evil in this context, readers will be considering this story long after it ends. Teen and adult readers with an interest in scientific discovery and the moral considerations involved in that will love this riveting story and will be anticipating the second installment with bated breath.

Where to start...? I don't usually read fantasy books but when J.Y. Sam asked me to read and review her book I thought what have I got to lose?

I'm so glad I said yes as it drew me in from the start!

The characters are so we'll set that you get the sense you know them. The story line kept me interested throughout the which I really liked.

Something that I really liked about reading this on my iPad was that the musical aspect was linked to YouTube videos, so you get a real feel for the atmosphere and mood.

The twists and turns in this book will definitely keep you wanting to read more.

I can't wait to see what J.Y. Sam comes up with next!

I was wonderfully surprised by the eclectic blend of genres this book has to offer. It is part Young Adult, part historical fiction, part James-bondy, part fantasy, part literary, part family drama and they all work wonderfully well together.

The writing is beautiful. It drew me in from the very beginning and I absolutely loved the individual backstory of each main character, particularly Mei Hei who is introduced to readers halfway through the story. Where all the other teenagers in this story are westerners, Mei Hei’s backstory is set in Asia and echoes the sort of backdrop and writing style of a book I absolutely loved named Pachinko by Min Jin Lee.

I also found fascinating how the story was partly written from various animals point of view which J Y Sam executed with finesse. The section involving a whale was particularly poignant and lovingly executed. However the main plot wasn’t for me, but I believe the problem lies with me rather than the book – I think I may just be a tad too old to appreciate it!

Seven children born with a genius gene
One professor that connects them all
Hundreds of forgotten graves
Zero explanation

A unique group of teenagers. They should have been celebrated worldwide as outstanding products of biotechnology, but instead they are abandoned and anonymous. An ordinary girl next door, a homeless boy rummaging through rubbish, a pampered child of a well-to-do family. They are all but forgotten, until the mysterious disappearance of one of the children brings out of hiding the man who connects them all - Professor Harald Wolff, the geneticist who created them. No longer the distinguished scientist he once was; he is now blind, broken and a recluse.

Brought together, the remaining children’s abilities evolve in unexpected ways. Forced to confront an unknown enemy, the full potential of their genius is unlocked. But exceptional as they are, they must learn the dangers of being too clever for their own good, and that they are just one small strand in the complex web of life.

No ordinary tale of good vs evil, this story warns of the evil that lurks inside us all, and our struggle to triumph over it with good. And so the ingenious children must combine their unique gifts to combat the evil within resulting in an epic battle of the world’s greatest minds.

Described by the author as contemporary fiction that crosses into young adult and science fiction with a touch of natural science this is very different to the books I’d usually reach for. I set out this year to try more genres and I am I glad I did.

Years after Project Ingenious came to an end, those involved (the professor and doctor, the babies and their families are living anonymously, all but forgotten until one of the children (the youngest) disappears. This causes Professor Wolff to pull together the remaining six, not only for their safety but so they can band together and combine their unique skills/gifts to combat the evil within.

However can Professor Wolff be able to find them all before it’s too late? Before the evil who seems to be after them get to them?

This book kept my attention and I was left wanting to know what was going for happen next. I liked not knowing what was coming next. I find it jumped in a couple spots from scene to scene but not enough to mean that you couldn’t understand the story.

The author uses chapters to introduce the characters and what their lives are like before things start to change for the teenagers.

Throughout the book we see those at the professors safe place become a family unit and bond with each other.

The author uses chapter titles which is rare to find these days and this is a touch I am a fan of. There are also quote pages and QR code links to songs that are mentioned which is a lovely touch.

Overall I found this to be a good book and I am glad I read it!!

This book is - well the only word is in the title ... INGENIOUS ! Moreover, it brings vibrant COLOUR to the LIVES of so many characters: the old, blind, charming Professor; the lively, phenomenal Milly, who scales down her brilliant schoolwork in order to “blend in” to please her father; the strikingly beautiful Calista, who is keener on the “most handsomest” boy, Jake, than on her A level choices; the quiet, knowing Tai, who, left motherless and homeless, finds a family with Cat and Dog and kittens; the deaf and dumb Chauffeur, who was nonetheless cook, tailor, decorator, cleaner, gardener, mechanic, and in his own mind Formula 1 racing driver! Last but not least, Mei Hui, who loses her teeth and is deemed unmarriageable, but can build a house with jade green tiles, look after the village children, come to London and meet the Prime Minister, and settle happily into the group of teenagers - bringing to them the Yin and the Yang.

J.Y.Sam covers so many aspects of life. There are delicious descriptions of food, so that you feel you are preparing it, and then joyfully eating it! There are also delightful, and sometimes heartbreaking, scenes of animal and bird life. There are apposite references to music too; and challenging insights into computer technology! A reference to a mysterious Oxford disease ... Covid ?? ...

The settings in this novel vary excitingly: early on we are in a suburban park with a small zoo, in Acton, West London; later we are in Avernus, the underground “safe place” where the Professor carries out his top secret project, and where the number of teenagers is only exceeded by the number of computers! Later still, we are in rural China, enjoying a simple dinner of steamed whipped egg with dried shrimps, spring vegetables, and rice.

This is a brilliant book! The plot thickens with every page turned!
Inside the back cover we are informed about “updates on sequels to The Ingenious trilogy”. Can’t be too soon!

I was given an advanced copy of this book in order to provide an honest review.

This book was amazingly good for a debut novel! The author spun a tale that kept me reading, intrigued, and wanting more. This is not my normal genre, and I was sucked into reading on and on...and to me, that is the main point of any book!

As advice, my recommendation is to remove some areas that do not advance the story. There are often areas that do not add value. I believe that will improve as the author continues her work. I would also be careful in some character descriptions. For example, one character is described as unintelligent, but becomes an integral intelligent part of the story. This character's development could have been altered to fit more into the storyline.

Lastly, there were some grammatical errors that could easily be fixed. These were perhaps just missed or looked over.

All in all, a few minor tweaks would make this a 5 star book! I would recommend this read and I hope this author is successful. I sincerely hope J.Y. Sam releases the continued series of her debut novel so we can continue to enjoy some of the characters for books to come!

My first book of 2021 and it did not disappoint!
The ingenious and the colour of life is a story about Seven children who have the genius gene. They are exceptionally clever but is this a gift or a curse?
Firstly, I can not believe that this story is a debut novel! J.Y Sam writes with such elegance and intelligence. The thought process that went in to this story is incredible!
From the very start this book will grab you and you won’t be able to put it down. The amount of twists and turns along the way make it such an exciting read.
The characters are a diverse mix of personalities, with different abilities and strengths. Some are so loveable, while others one or two I could not stand!
Each ones personality, thoughts and feelings are described so vividly that you can imagine exactly what they are like. (Calista is a favourite of mine).
There is always something happening, the book delves into morality and really gets you thinking. Just because something could be done, should it?
I can not wait to read the next book.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I enjoy a good SFF book. I don’t, however, read a lot of YA. When the author of THE INGENIOUS AND THE COLOUR OF LIFE reached out offering a copy of her debut book, the concept intrigued me ... so I had to give it a go, and I’m glad I did!

This book is the first in a trilogy about a group of children who are the result of years of experimenting to create humans with a “genius gene.” Raised for their first few years in a lab, the children were then scattered across the globe for their own protection when the project became too much to ethically maintain. This novel picks up with each of the children years later as it appears someone is out to kill them all. One of the professors responsible for the project gathers them for their safety and together they try to unravel who is after them.

Full of more twists and turns than I expected and beautifully rendered characters, this was such a fun read despite the subject matter not being exactly light. Sam drew me into the world she created and I can’t wait to see what happens in the rest of the trilogy!

Seven extraordinary children born out of a highly funded, secretive, scientific DNA enhancement government project called "Ingenious Project" are in grave danger. They are being hunted one by one by someone. Inspite of this project being highly guarded, there is someone who knows more than they ought to. The Professor, the blind scientific genius behind the project, puts in everything he has to protect these brilliant but innocent children from being the victim of a vicious manhunt.

Will he succeeded in saving every child, who themselves do not know about their own abilities & super powers? Will he succeed in empowering them? Who is hunting them and why?
Alone each teenager is weak but together will they become each other's strengths?

This book is a well researched fast paced, YA sci- fi thriller. All the characters are definitive and well formed. In certain parts, I found the story, too descriptive, which I believe could have been avoided. Mid way the book takes a different direction, but smoothly joins back to the original track. Its a perfect coming-of-age story with a dash of teenage enthusiasm, drama and thrill. I will give this book 4 🌟

The Ingenious and The Colour of Life is a contemporary fantasy and science fiction novel by J.Y Sam. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I cannot believe this was the author's debut novel by the way it was so fantastically written. I didn't think I would like this book so much when I first started reading the book because of the long introductory chapters about each character, but once they begin to blend and the actual story starts, I could not put this book down.

I definitely recommend this book to people who are interested in Sci-fi and even those who aren't because even I usually don't read Sci-fi, and I have only enjoyed some of them that happen to be quite famous these days, but this book captured my interest. The ending left me shook, and I can't wait for a sequel!

What do an unrecognised genius and a homeless boy have in common? Only the mysterious blind man knows. Helped by a blonde socialite with an exceptional natural talent for IT that even she didn’t recognise, the group try to save others from a sinister woman who is, one by one, hunting down an elite group of very special children.
This is a book that I think would be best enjoyed by older children and teens. There is one aspect of the storyline I found rather too much of a stretch of the imagination but, letting that go, this was a story with plenty of twists, a variable pace and a plot that made me want to keep turning the pages. The children’s individual backgrounds have been well thought-out and are described in detail, which, although taking the reader on sometimes lengthy trips outside the main storyline, are interesting and very engaging.
The ending both rounds off one element of the story and encourages the reader to buy the next in this series.

Wow what a journey. Although part of a trilogy it’s a complete story in itself. The writer dwells for a long time on individual characters and their stories, with so much detail that you get to “know” them really well and the journey you have taken with each one adds to the whole story. I spent a while at the start of the book wondering when and how the stories might start to intertwine. I loved the information gained about most of them. I found some of it horrific and confess to skipping one description. (I’m pretty sensitive and get nightmares easily). Having said that it built up the picture the author wanted to portray.
This book was gifted to me by voracious readers in return for an honest review.

Perfection is not a real thing, yet human beings continue their experiments. The author does a fantastic job of allowing the reader to understand this in the very first few chapter. Man has given these children great intellect, but have taken away their security. How will the Scientist justify their actions to the children? While reading the author lays out a fabulous story that will leave you with your emotions twisted in a knot. But, isn't that what you want in a great book? A story that makes you feel something and leave you wanting more. This story will satisfy that and more. I must say that there were times where I felt the details were a little lengthy. This might slow down your reading, but will not hamper your reading pleasure. I highly recommend this story to everyone who likes new authors. (I received a complimentary review copy of this novel from the author via Voracious Readers Only)

I loved reading this book. The story is told from multiple perspectives which all serve to add depth and richness to the reading experience. The story is intriguing and unpredictable, and is at times sad, heartwarming, poignant, and very thought-provoking. I particularly loved the sections of the novel about nature and animals, and there is a section telling the story of a whale which was absolutely beautiful. This author writes incredibly well, and I'm very interested to see where this story goes from here.

For a debut novel, this book delivers.

Being older, the YA genre is one I tend not to not gravitate to. But the book has a sci-fi element to it and that is why I loved this book.

The author’s extensive descriptive text helps bring this gem to life. Each of the genius kids are unique and memorizing. At first I thought having this many characters would be a bit overwhelming but that was not the case.

Wow I have not read too many sci-fi fantasy's yet, but this one is the first on the list. This book was absolutely amazing. There were so many different elements that came together into one story. If your an animal lover there's a part in the story that will melt your heart. I am so excited I had the chance to read this book. I highly recommend this book to everyone. This plot is always interesting and keeps you wanting to read more. If I had the time I would have read this so fast!! Thank you so much!!

I am a big fan of YA fantasy and I loved this debut. It has a really interesting mix of fantasy and science fiction, with characters you really get invested in. I loved the mix of characters among the Ingenious, and really wanted to know what happened at the end of the story, how it would play out. I would recommend for anyone who loves good characters and an interesting thought provoking story. I really hope to see more of this world!
