Fear crawled up his spine and curled around his neck. If you couldn’t hear and you couldn’t see, were you even alive?Britton Donovan seemed like a regular guy. He ran an autism center. He had a wife and two kids. He made a decent living. Most folks didn’t know he had a secret. Sure, he spent most of his life as a “Defective.” If only that was his biggest secret. Fifteen years since that day...the day he woke up in the back of an ambulance. He felt like he’d been struck by lightning, or maybe the hand of God Himself. He was no longer “Defective.” At least not as far as the world defined it. He was whole. That miserable life was something he needed to forget. He left it. The good and the bad. Why dwell on those dark years? All was forgotten...He was on a flight across the Atlantic...huge rifts tore through the veil. Allowing the spiritual to bombard the world...Light warriors rushed through to protect...large spears and shining swords. Demon Trolls crawled through the aircraft as it barreled through the sky...Britton watched, helpless. The spirits infected each passenger with a virus, causing them to lose their sight, their hearing. He alone was left...untouched. His mind chased a thousand possibilities...why was he immune? Was it his past life? It wasn't a virus that attacked the immune system. It was a virus that attacked the soul. The world would need reminding...no vaccine ever made anyone immune to sin.NO CHOICE is the vivid second book in the Chronicles of the Shadowlands new adult fantasy series. I am sad to say, that for me, the 2nd in the series,
was not as good, as the first book.

Certainly all of the information about autism was excellent!!!

But my disappointment came in the theological aspects. etc.

One issue I had, and it may not have been the author's intent?

One of the characters, Jeff I think was his name...
had lived, and grown up,with his father who was a pastor.

However, this father in the novel was portrayed
( as I understood it),
as sort of a very conservative Christian,
who seemingly camped on the
'DONT'S'.

So right there I have a problem, God's Word has:
Don'ts!
And
the Bible has Do's.

Furthermore, the do's and don't are generally
NOT suggestions...
they are often:
Commandments!

Because:
If you ignore God's don'ts...
9 times out of 10
( well really, I think 10 out of 10)

Doing the don't, of God's Word in the Bible:
will hurt someone...
someone you love,
some stranger,
yourself etc.

But the portrayal of the pastor, didn't end there.
This pastor father, used the 'don'ts'
to beat his son over the head ( so to speak)!

But actually, the pastor father:
was abusive....verbally, emotionally, psychologically, and physically!

Yes, I do agree, there have been and probably are to this day:
such 'so-called' pastors, like that.

First, I would wonder 'if' they are in fact, even saved?
I suppose some are...
but many might have some Bible head knowledge,
but may have NOT be born again.

Second, I would not have had such a problem with that,
'IF 'the author had made it clear,
not 'all' conservative pastors are abusive...
but as far as I can recall, she did not.

Third, I am equally convinced, a very liberal pastor...
the ones that ONLY preach:
Love...
Jesus and God love you!
Period!!

Those pastors, who are all, and ONLY,
about LOVE....
could be, at home abusive on all accounts!

Being abusive, is not just a 'conservatives' issue.

( A personal grumble of mine is:
that some people, paint the Puritans,
with that same paint brush!!)

I have a lot of books, commentaries etc. by Puritans pastors,
and their commentaries are so rich, beautiful, insightful, godly, loving etc.

It is so sad to me, that some folks without having done a lot of reading of the Puritans writings
make such a judgmental call!

I have no doubt, there were 'mean' Puritans...people are sinners!
And some people are mean, very very very mean...
They have been throughout all the ages!!!!

Then there is the fact,
that although the author's portrayal of the loving side,
of our Lord and Savior Jesus,
was well done...

Still, it was pretty 'one dimensional'..... in my opinion.

I do not believe the author used the words:
SIN, Sinners, or Hell
( except maybe Hell for the demons)?

In fact, when the main character would get to be with Jesus, and talk with Him,
the main character might lament
'FAILING' Jesus.

Failing, as in,
I tried so hard....but I failed.

And Jesus
( in my interpretation)

was kind of like:

Eh! No worries, come on let's 'PLAY'!!!

Nevertheless, I do believe God HATES SIN, it grieves Him!
God is not 'ONLY' a God of LOVE
( which He is...God is LOVE)
But
God is also a God of Justice!

Yes, He forgives us, over and over and over.

But I don't really remember the characters grieving about sinning
Failing,
doubting
yes....
but sinning???

Also, even the 'BAD' people
( and they were truly horrible!)
it was not so much that they were:
UNSAVED SINNERS

Rather...
they were demon possessed!!!!!

Yes, I absolutely believe in demon possession!

But that is not an excuse, for their being unsaved sinners.

I do not think the author actually wrote it that way...
BUT...
there was so so so much emphasis on the
demons...
and
demonic possession,
that someone might begin to think that ( demon possession is an excuse),
especially if the reader were a baby Christian.

Also, there was too much (for me) emphasis given to the demons.

Oh and the horror and cruelty depicted of humans on other humans,
was sooooo gruesome and graphic,
that I don't see this as good for some younger folk!!
I as an adult, can't un-think the images.

Yes, there are torturers ( in real life)
who do such horrible things to other people...

I do agree with the author....how can they??

And some parts of her story were so so so good it brought me to tears!!!

But because of such issues as I mentioned, and more of them
( I won't go into)

I won't read the last book of the series.
Which is a shame, as I learned so much about autism!

If my issues are not a problem for you, I certainly recommend this series,
to learn about autism,
especially if you do not know much about it.

This book was absolutely amazing. For anyone that doubts the power of our Lord and Savior, this book is perfect. It’s a tear jerker but still one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. This reached parts of me that I can’t believe an author I’ve never met has managed to find, and it speaks volumes to her potential and talent!! Please read this book! You won’t regret it!
