Have the tissues ready for this beautifully written, emotional debut novel.
What if you became an outsider in your own life? Jennifer Hughes doesn’t have an extraordinary life, but that doesn’t matter – she loves her family and enjoys her job as a teacher. In her eyes, her unextraordinary life is utterly perfect.
But then, in the blink of an eye, Jennifer finds herself cut off from everything she knew and loved, confined to a strange new world and forced to watch from a distance as her family and friends pick up the pieces.
Can Jennifer hold her perfect life together, even though she’s not living it herself?
Ella’s been obsessed with books since she was a toddler. She decided to become a writer as soon as she realised that stringing letters together in the right order could actually be a career.
She grew up in the outskirts of London, where fairies lived at the bottom of her Grandma’s garden, so it isn’t surprising that she still looks for magic in everyday life – and often finds it.
When she’s not living in a fantasy world of her own creation, she writes bids and develops programmes for children’s services. She lives in rural Warwickshire (where there are probably more fairies) with her husband who is ever loving and understanding, and makes her gallons of tea in magical cups that can keep drinks warm for whole chapters.
Throughout lockdown, Ella’s spent a lot of time cleaning (who hasn’t), crocheting rainbows, and writing. She’s got two new novels in progress – but did take a few breaks to write a stories (featuring a lot more dinosaur poop and talking animals than her usual style) for some very special youngsters spending birthdays in shielded lockdown.
The shocking car accident which killed Jennifer Hughes and barely injured her husband, David, was to have lasting effects on David and their children, Charlotte and Matthew. As the days, weeks and months went by, Lottie and Matty’s lives moved forward. They still grieved their mother’s passing but with Matty and his girlfriend Lucy becoming engaged and Lottie falling for Stu – a past student of her mother’s who’d been at the wake, David could see they were happy. David’s grief though was all encompassing – he wasn’t coping.
Jenn watched her family in the throes of grief – she tried her best to show them she was still around. When David learnt to associate the warmth with Jenn, he was overwhelmed. But Jenn needed him to move forward – he was lonely and not caring for himself; there was only so much she could do…
Could Jenn direct David the way she wanted him to go? It was getting harder, but she wanted him to be happy.
Beyond Grey by Ella Cook was completely different to what I imagined it to be – unusual and heartbreaking, it was also filled with hope, love and deep friendship, loyalty and devotion. I enjoyed all the character’s personalities, especially Jenn’s 😊 And the book's cover is entirely appropriate! It’s hard to believe this is the author’s debut novel; I’ll be keeping an eye out for her next book. Recommended.
With thanks to ChocLit Publishing for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
This is a beautifully written debut about the aftermath of a death and how a family grieves. All the family have a voice including Jennifer who watches over the family as a ghost trying to connect with David and nudge him into moving on with his life. I can count on one hand the number of books that have made me cry (I'm just that hard hearted :) )but I know it has reduced plenty of others to tears. It does pull on the heart strings as we witness everyone trying to come to terms with what happened.
It explored all the stages of grief and using all four voices you get to see how different people cope. It's a wonderfully written debut and I look forward to what Ella does next
I really can’t put into words just how moving this book is, I was an utter sniffling mess, there wasn’t a dry eye by the end.
Beyond Grey is an exceptionally emotional read, right from the first page you have a sense that this is going to be a tear-jerker when Jennifer and her husband David are involved in a tragic car accident one of which unfortunately kills Jennifer. In a turn of event’s Jennifer doesn’t quite move on, she is stuck in limbo, lingering on the fringes of life and the white light of afterlife. She is the position where she now can see the full impact of her death on her family, which breaks her heart as much as theirs. But, soon her husband especially starts to feel her presence, in her own unique way she begins to help her family to comes through this terrible period.
The one thing that particularly struck me and it is this aspect that hurt my heart more than anything else, and the thing which made me smile through the tears was when Jennifer and her beloved dog are reunited in the afterlife. For someone who has lost a beloved dog within the last six months, plus countless others over the last 30 years, that one thing really touched me, no matter what you’re leaving behind there is always your beloved fur- baby waiting on the other side of the bridge for you. I’m welling up now just writing that, but it really touched my heart more than anything else.
Beyond Grey is a sensational debut, if I hadn’t known before that this was Ella Cook’s first I wouldn’t have believed it, the crystal clear clarity of her writing is beyond words. I was completely blown away, this story really got into my heart, I connected with the characters and felt their pain and their hope for the future. Cook’s writing is compelling, her unique style is flawless and I for one am looking forward to where this talented writer is going to go from here.
Beyond Grey is a moving, unique, highly original, emotional and utterly heartbreaking story of love and loss, its the kind of story which feels appropriate to the time we are living in where there is so much sadness and so many are searching for light and trying to move on this picks up those subjects of coping with the ultimate loss of losing a loved one and finding your feet again after, there is a powerful message of; there can be life and happiness after such sorrow as long as you don’t give up looking and that those we lost are never truly gone forever, just waiting and watching over us. Which personally I think that gives huge comfort.
This I certainly one of the most touching and deeply emotional reads I have ever read, it’s a fresh and unique tale of life after loss, Beyond Grey is a real punch to the heart it’s a beautifully written, poignant and exceptionally moving debut, one which I urge everyone to read, you will cry a river of tears but you will feel so much lightness and relief by letting this beautiful story into your heart, I honestly cannot recommend this enough and I am so looking forward to reading more from Ella Cook.
At the beginning of Beyond Grey, my heart broke. By the ending, my heart was soaring. What an incredible debut.
The first thing that will catch your eye is the cover. That alone should give you a hint of what is to come. It’s stark, it’s a dividing line, and it’s effective.
In the world we live in today, right now, there is someone we know who is dealing with grief, with the death of a loved one, a friend, a co-worker. We all grieve differently there is no “right” way, just as we all are unique individuals we all deal in our own unique way when the time comes to deal with death.
One moment, one second is all it takes for life to change forever. One moment Jenn was a teacher, a loving wife, a great mother – the next, she wasn’t with her family, her students in the same way, and she never would be again. Jenn was killed in a car accident, and although she’s no longer physically a part of her family she is there with them, loving them, even guiding them through their grief, through the devastating changes that are uniquely affecting her husband and her two children.
Beyond Grey will make you feel, encourage you to think, and will break your heart like David, Matty, and Lottie each deal with their mother’s, their wife’s death and must, somehow, continue with the business of living. But don’t think that this story is nothing but sadness and turn away. No, there is hope here, there is love expressed, there is even laughter through the tears, there is a future… eventually.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Choc Lit/Ruby Fiction. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
This was a really touching and emotional read that explores the possibility of a loved one watching over you after they've passed, and trying to help you get back on the path of living a happy life despite being overwhelmed by grief and not being able to see a way forward.
Jennifer is killed in a car crash and the rest of her family survive so the story is told from her point of view, as well as through the eyes of her family left behind. Both viewpoints share that anger, the shock, the disbelief in how their lives have changed and the battles that lay ahead.
From her point of view, you sense her frustration at the regrets, the injustice of it all and then the suffering of having to watch over her family as they try and move on. Her husband David is the one who struggles the most and watching him return home without Jen was heartbreaking. All those reminders of her dotted around, knowing she'll never return.
What gives him comfort is the feeling that she is watching over him, even if his kids think he's going mad with the way he starts acting, and that was the most touching thing about the story! Those little things that make us feel like our guardian angel is taking care of things and keeping an eye out for us - just having that feeling that you're not alone make all the difference.
A really striking story that will bring a tear to your eye and a warm glow to your heart!
This is a beautifully written book. Jenn is killed a car accident and her Husband David doesn't know how he will cope without her. Their children Lottie and Matty also have to cope without their Mum. But Jenn is still with them, around them when she is needed, trying to ensure they know she is around them, that she hasn't yet left their lives.
Jenn is in limbo, a grey world between Earth and the Afterlife but wants her family to be happy without her and wants to encourage David to move on and experience happiness again, even ensuring that she brings Ruth into David's life.
Written from the viewpoint of each of the family members and of Ruth, showing their individual feelings and coping mechanisms, this story is emotive and I guarantee you will need a tissue to wipe the tears at the end.
The book explores love, grief, anger, moving on and this the afterlife in a brilliant way and I would highly recommend this book.
Thank you to Choc-Lit for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to release in exchange for an honest review, which is completely my own.
It takes courage for an author to start her debut novel by killing off one of the main characters, but that’s what Ella Cook does in "Beyond Grey". She then brings back that character (a wife killed in a car crash, with her husband in the driver’s seat getting out unharmed) as a spirit that supports and helps her husband and her family through the grief and guilt that follows her untimely demise. It’s a testament to the skill of the author that she makes this conceit work remarkably well, often with a finely balanced emotional content that carries the family (husband, plus grown-up son and daughter) through the year following her death, stabilising her husband, helping her son and daughter with their relationships and careers, and ultimately leaving the family in a much better state come the anniversary of her death. All the characters are well drawn and the plotline moves along at a nice pace, making for an engrossing read. A fine first novel by a very promising young author.
I really really loved this book, it was told with warmth and empathy in the one situation that all of us think about at one different stages of our lives.
Jennifer Grey dies in a car accident, leaving her job, her husband and her family behind. However, she can't let go, and is stuck in what she calls a 'nothingness,' watching everyone grieve her loss and trying to get on with their lives without her.
She finds it so difficult that she wants to help. While she is in the 'nothingness,' she finds the power to help them, let them know, if you like, that she is there. Secretly, she starts sending signals, like moving certain objects, causing slight breezes and smells to make them all think of her.....
I don't want to give to much away, otherwise I'd be telling you the whole story...just to say it is worth a read if you're a spiritual person or likes to think there is something out there afterwards...
And on the plus side it gave me lots of inspiration for my nip.
I expected a tear fest from the off, and all I got was 'pleasant'.
I didn't really love any of the characters, they weren't endearing and I didn't feel their grief or feel sorry for them.
I found the storylines about Jenn bursting a waterpipe and saving a dying boy quite insulting. Why haven't most people's dead loved ones done that for them?! I know it's fiction but the world would be chaos if that were possible. Also the suggestion that Jenn stayed around longer because of the love her family shared suggests that if you don't feel a loved one who's gone then your love wasn't enough (again, I know it's not real, just saying how I see it).
The final chapter was beautiful and I did well up, thinking about how I would feel in the same situation. But overall what could have been absolutely a heart wrenchingly beautiful read throughout just felt a bit meh.

When Jenn is killed in a car crash her family are devastated, her husband David has lost his soul mate and doesn't know how to carry on and her grown up children Lottie and Matty have lost their anchor...... but what if Jenn stays in limbo and finds a way to look out for her family and communicate her presence!
A lovely bittersweet story as you follow the roller coaster of emotions from all of the family as they try to come to terms with their loss and move on. It works well being told in alternating chapters by the different family members and Jenn so you get to know all their points of view and stories.... definitely a tearjerker!
I bought this book to read on holiday. I literally sobbed through the first couple of chapters and put it aside until I was home. I’m a grief therapist and wow this book really shows what people go through. I like to think those we’ve lost never leave us entirely. I really wasn’t sure about this book but it’s kept me thoroughly engaged with it over the last couple of days while I’ve read the bulk of it. I really enjoyed it. I was left wanting more - do David and Ruth live happily ever after? Who’s going to have a baby? Does Jenn still get to see her family from the other side? I really enjoyed the read
I found this book almost impossible to read through my tears - such an absolutely heart wrenching, moving story. It’s hard to say that I enjoyed the book, even thinking of it again now to write this, chokes me up and I have never sought that in my preferred escapist reading, but I couldn't put it down, so anyone who does like this kind of emotional story would surely relish it, and I do admire the author’s imagination - I will have to be completely objective and award at least 4 stars. I look forward to seeing whatever she comes up with next time.
This is such a touching, unusual story. I loved it! I rarely cry over a book but I did this one! Several times in fact. Right from the start you are involved in the lives of David, Jenn and their family. I found it moving and hopeful, abnormal and believable. As you follow the family for a pivotal year you so want things to go well it is almost as if you are part of the family, or at the very least one of Jenn's friends. Curl up with a cup of hot chocolate, packet of tissues and lose yourself in a story that affects us all.
Jennifer Hughes has a perfect life. A successful career as a teacher, mother to two grown up children and devoted wife to a husband she adores. Then tragedy strikes and Jen can no longer live the life she loves. What she can do is watch from a far, as her family struggle to come to terms with their new normal. Can Jen find a way to help them through their dark days and back to happier times, before she has to say goodbye for good?
This is a very special story. It’s full of love, warmth and the strength of family. It’s an emotional read, that will tug at your heart strings and quite possibly make your eyes leak!
This is Ella Cook’s debut novel, and she is off to a flying start. She writes with a depth of feeling and raw emotion. I’m looking forward to reading more from her.
Once you have read the book, the cover makes perfect sense, and is really quite beautiful.
Five touchingly sweet and poignant stars from me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This author is exceptionally talented with regard to making a 44yr old man sob...countless times! Such a good book. Emotional, at times heart wrenching, other times heart warming, so well written. Will read again. Some similarities to “The Art of Racing in the rain,” by Garth Stein (all time favorite). And now “Life After me” is one of my absolute favorites books now! Get your tissues ready…you’re gonna need a box or two!
Laughed a little, cried some more I must read again
A wonderful book from start to finish if only this could be real life sad but true and after our loved ones have passed life does go on and this book has brought that out. The main character in the book was fortunate to see her family through good and bad. This book brings out to all of us how quickly something can happen and change our lives over which we have no control over.
Story of Jennifer (Jenn) who dies in a car crash but her husband survives. She lives in an alternative world watching her family pick up the pieces. She meets the family dog who passed away years ago. He is her link to the next world but she wants to help support her husband to get through his grief. It is beautifully written and a superb debut novel.
This was a difficult book to read and it is a difficult book to review without explaining too much. I think this unusual story is sensitively and beautifully written, the pace and suspense continued throughout. It is certainly a book that I imagine re-reading as there is a lot to take in the first time and a calmer second read would uncover more. Lots to look forward to from Ella Cook I hope!
Beautiful and tenderly written story of how David coped when his wife Jenn is killed in a car accident. Sad and emotional but I still found myself smiling as I read this story of how Jenn tries to look after her family from wherever you go to until it’s time to move on. Made me think what would I do!
A really enjoyable and tear-jerking book, that will be enjoyed by all men and women. It gripped me from the beginning and took me on an emotional roller -coaster. Is well written and definitely worth a read. Thoroughly recommended.
About a lady who dies in a car crash and she watches her family go through the grief and pick up their lives. Interesting about grief but not too keen on how the lady watches and communicates with them.

I absolutely loved the story, it was intriguing, so very different and the characters were so individual, it held my interest to the very last page- a big read recommendation from me.
Not for me-a very contrived ghost story- A dead wife and distressed husband and the scope for her to affect his life in her absence. It requires too much of a stretch of the imagination for me.
A beautiful story that had me crying at least once in each chapter. For anyone who has suffered the loss of a person close to them, this book says it all. The anger, guilt, pain, all the memories and then the eventual coming through to a new normal. I loved it.
Heartfelt story about the love that binds us to each other. Knowing when it’s time to let go and move on without forgetting the memories you’ve shared.
A really lovely and reassuring read that true love never falters and that there is life after death. I really enjoyed this one, even with tears streaming down my face at the end.
This was my first time reading anything from this author, and it won't be the last. Beautifully written book about how this family dealt with grief on the unexpected death of their wife/mother. I cried a few times while reading.
