The classic, manga “This is no time to die” line always gets me.

Sure, yeah, I’m sure it’s your choice. The power of your will, etc.

Why must it always end in a cliffhanger?!

This volume was SO GOOD. Even though I only read each new volume every 2 months, I am still just so in love with this story. Reading this manga brings me pure joy ♥️

I loved how the priest guy was going to hurt Yona and Yun and the dragons were scared for her but she just kicked him in the neck like a Queen!! Yona is amazing! Kuelbo is such a creep tho I don’t like him at all. He’s going to get what’s coming to him for sure (the beast of lightning). When Volvo and Algira kitty showed up to help and Hak just hugged them both because he was so relieved he wouldn’t have to go to battle alone. (Voldo’s crush on Hak is hilarious). And Hak leading the army was so great to see because he’s such a good leader. I was shook when the strategy he used was one he got from Suwon - that’s flash back of them as friends talking about strategies with the actual battle playing out was awesome! Now somebody hurry up and rescue poor Yun I don’t like seeing him in danger....

After being gravely misled by Ogi, Yona, Jaeha, Yoon, and Zeno are captured by the Kai empire. Consequently, Hak agrees to join the Kohka army in order to get back the missing HHB members.

Yona always shines under pressure, and this volume was no exception, I love how far she’s come and how much of a boss she is. As for the other characters, I’m constantly complaining about the villains in this series, but I have to say Cuerbo is probably the best so far. He’s an interesting character, and under different circumstances I probably could have liked him. I despise Advisor Kye-sook and his attitude towards our heroes, but I also acknowledge that he makes the story more fascinating and I like how cold and calculating he is. Kye-sook really takes advantage of the situations he’s place in and uses whatever and whomever is available to him. I also appreciate that he can see just how valuable Hak is as a warrior, and I hope that comes into play in the future. I also never thought I’d be so happy to be seeing Vold and Algira again. It's adorable how much more affectionate Hak is towards his friends over the course of the series!

Again, the dragons are being targeted by Gobi, who is allied with Cuerbo of the Kai Empire, for their powers. I hate that this is happening to them, and all I want for them is to be safe and happy, and its always rough seeing them having to fight when they're already hurt and tired.

And then we have the battle between Kohka and Kai. I thought it so sweet that Kija and Shin-ah were looking out for Hak, and this was a battle I was genuinely invested in because we’ve watched the Fire Tribe work so hard to rebuild themselves, so to potentially have that torn away again? The Fire Tribe really is putting themselves on the line for this one, and it annoyed me to no end to see the Sky Tribe forcing them up front. In general I prefer reading fantasy stories that don’t involve wars/giant battles, not that I have anything against them, my preferences just lie elsewhere. But oh, how Kusanagi blew this one out of the park. Giving Hak the opportunity to lead a battalion, and seeing him so successfully raise morale, and lead and care for his troops, it was so incredible. I love seeing how capable of a leader Hak is, and he was really in his element here. I’m not usually one to have crushes on fictional characters (and if I were my pick would be Jaeha), but I fell a bit in love with Hak in this volume. And the way the battle went back and forth between scenes of a younger Su-won and Hak devising war tactics and those war tactics actually being put into action was brilliant. Su-won is a person Hak cannot get away from no matter how hard he tries and this insertion of those memories with Su-won made the scene all the more emotionally impactful. But what really added to the heartbreak was the fact that Hak has realized just how much he’s come to depend on the dragons, just when they’re not there to support him, and Yona giving him strength even though she is not present. I’ve never really thought about it until this point, but one of my favourite parts about the battle scenes in this series is seeing our heroes work together, so to have that aspect suddenly gone was crushing. And then there’s the dragons, I was really unhappy over the idea of them fighting each other, and I’m annoyed that one of the only times Zeno’s using his powers is against our heroes, but their battle scenes were also great.

^^^ That is reflective of all my emotions because WHAT KIND OF VOLUME IS THIS?!?!?!

*attempts to take deep breaths and fails*

I can't even with this volume even though my heart is cringing, I'm still like this was SUCH a good volume! BUT DO NOT MAKE THESE GUYS FIGHT! JUST DON'T!!

Hak is unhinged and rightfully so, Yona is as my friend said is being Queen, Tae-jun is being Tae-jun which means he's being his funny hot mess self, and the Dragons are just…I don't know. I don't know how to put it into words.

Usually the battles are my least favorite and can be hard to stomach at times, but this volume is VERY good. Though the advisor…he's awful. Him and Su-won are NOT the same. Keishuk has a nice face, but he can get out the picture and hope he eats every. single. word he spoke about Hak and all the dragons.

I can at least form words to say Hak was INCREDIBLE! WOW! No words past that except that he is incredible.

And look at Sinha and Gija teaming up!!! *sobs* I LOVED the panel of them "going against" Hak. It was such a great moment (nd when Hak gives his "speech"! VERY good stuff!) but I refuse to acknowledge that THIS IS NOT *MY* YONA!!! *sobs*

Somehow this volume was more intense even the last arc we were in (and that was the most intense thus far!) but I feel confident that things will work out (but what does that even LOOK like right now?!) because of the next cover, but it doesn't mean I'm going to love what is going on even though this is very much a five star read.

Just know, Hak is awesome and looks awesome, but I AM SO CONFLICTED!!!!

Awww yes, back with this series that I love. This volume is mostly all battles and political maneuvering, but introduces an interesting element that may have friends fighting friends.

I continue to love Yona's growth as the series moves on, and being this deep in it's wonderful to see how past decisions, friendships, enemies and allies all inform the current storyline.

“I am not of the Fire Tribe. In fact, I’ve fought against you in the past. But more than anything, I can understand wanting to protect your own tribe. And I know that the once desolate Fire Tribe is finally starting to revive, thanks to the effort you’ve put in. So I’ll swear on this blade, that I will not let these bastards take a single step into our country!”

If I thought that any of the previous skirmishes had been epic in nature, well, I certainly was not expecting this to break out at any point.

First of all, Yona's composure, badassery, and dignity even in the worst of situations are truly admirable and deeply inspiring. I love that even virtually powerless she manages to remain courageous and strong.

That being said, what really steals my heart in this volume is the strength of those bonds that have been created slowly through the story and how we can see their unbreakable strength in times of deep need and despair. Seeing each other be there for the one that needs help will never not move me to tears.

Hak is the definite MVP of this volume and I love that we focus so much on him. Even while my heart broke for him I was indescribably proud of his resilience and his resolve, and his sheer passion will always make him one of the best characters there is.

Now, I just need this series to calm down a little bit so that my heart can handle what is to come because the epicness of this whole set-up is immense and awe-inducing.

“For the first time before an enemy my limbs feel numb. I’ve fought with White Snake and the others against armies countless times. And I’ve trained plenty of soldiers during my time as general. But I’ve never led troops into battle. These soldiers are depending on me, but Kyo-ga and Joo-doh have far more experience leading than I do. It’s scary. Before I realized it, I’d gained more things to protect than I can possibly hold.”

YONA IS SO STRONG. I'm so proud of her GROWTH!! Oh my god. Yes. And Hak is being so vulnerable??

This battle is stressing me out. Anytime the dragons are in danger I'm stressed. I'm on the edge of my seat. I don't want anything bad to happen to them :(

Book: Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 29
Author: Mizuho Kusanagi
Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars

Another very action-paced volume! I like that we get a healthy mix of both action and, then, not so action-packed arcs. It balances the story out very nicely.

As this is the twentieth-ninth volume of the series, there may be spoilers in my review of earlier volumes. I am going to try to keep my review as vague as possible.

This one features a very high stakes battle and it is high stakes. No one is safe from what happens. This is also a case where you don’t realize how attached you are to the characters until you are reading. The fear is very real. Plus, there is a lot of political things driving it, as well as personal. Some of the characters have found themselves in the hands of the enemy and the others are working to figure out how to get them out of that situation. It makes for a very intense sequence.

I love how the characters are molding into the role that they are supposed to have. It has taken them some time to get to this point, but that is what has made it work. We get to follow them on this journey and see what has gotten to them to this point. Now, there are still some characters who we don’t have the whole picture for and that’s okay. There are still plenty of volumes left to get that. If we don’t get it, then it’s fine too.

Overall, I am still in love with this series and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

This is the last volume I have available to read. 😭😭 I’m not ready to say goodbye to my babies yet, especially after how we left them, holy cow WHAT IN THE WORLD?!?!? How dare the mangaka do such a thing to my dragon brothers! And Hak! And Yona and Yun! And Ao! (Not that much happened to her, but it would be rude to leave her out of all the pain and suffering going around 😆)

This was one of the shortest volumes in the series, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t impactful or heartbreaking in any way. All the choices and suffering these precious characters are going through break my heart because I love them SO MUCH.

And Hak…man, I FEEL for him and how he has to balance this game with Advisor Keishuk while also worry about his friends and try to save them…he just goes through the ringer to the extreme. And when he told Gija and Sinha he couldn’t lose anyone else important to him and those scenes on the battlefield, promising Yona he’s going to save her…😭😭😭 I think I just fell in love with these characters even more, if possible, haha.

And Algira and Voldo return! I was surprised yet super happy to see them come back as I really liked them in the Xing arc. Also Yona saying no one can kill Hak…eeeee!!!!! 😍😍😍😍 *forever squeals at the perfection of her trust in him and beyond* I can’t even BEGIN to write what that simple sentence meant to me except that I’m just deceased, totally gone.

And all the bad guys we can just burn right now, please and thank you. Man, I HATE them ALL!

And that ending…!!!! You better believe that’s the Thunder Beast, bad guy. You are going down!

The library can’t send me the next volume fast enough!

Content: a group of people are led into a trap and kidnapped then chained up/imprisoned and held hostage with some being threatened with death if the others don’t do what the enemy wants, violence and blood in battle (nothing over PG-13)

This is the first volume, at least that I can remember, that focuses almost primarily on Hak. And I have to say, I think it was a good choice to wait so long for that. As much as I like Hak, in the beginning of the series he didn't have a lot of character development. Most of it has happened in the more recent volumes, so seeing from his perspective now adds so much more to what a reader, who has read the last ten or so volumes, knows about him and what he's dealing with internally.

As I keep saying with each review of these, the tension is ramping up so much in these books. I love how Kusanagi isn't afraid to make this bloody and dark. Even if the characters come out of it in the end, they get so beaten up and hurt that there is still a lot of uncertainty to the battle scenes.

With all of these nations coming together in these massive battles, this manga series shows how it really is a fantasy epic.

4,5 stars!! HAK...THE MAN THAT YOU ARE!!! I love how even as he was beaten and bruised, even when he was knocked down, he looked at the necklace Yona gave him and came back stronger than EVER!! And yes Kuelbo, that is the thunder beast right there. Yona wasn't lying when she said that no one could kill him. He is invincible, he is the most powerful man. He is the dark dragon.

Also can we talk about how cute the cover is for the next volume??? Yona BETTER confess her feelings for Hak when they get reunited. I'm already preparing my popcorn.
