Of all the libels that have served as a means of incitement of hate against Jews, and as intellectual justification of anti-Semitism, the myth of the so-called 'Jewish Conspiracy' to gain domination of the whole world, as embodied in the forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion, is probably the most devious and the most dangerous. Previously only analyzed in academic, footnoted studies, the history of the Protocols is presented here by Judge Hadassa Ben-Itto in an eminently readable, fascinating account, telling the stories of the numerous people involved over the hundred years that the forgery has existed. Above all, this is the story of a judge who follows the Protocols into lawyers' chambers and into courtrooms in Switzerland, South Africa, Germany, the United States, and Russia, and presents the reader with a detailed critical analysis of legal proceedings which culminated in fascinating courtroom drama. The truth is revealed again and again, but the lie will not die.
Unfortunately, this book is poorly written and constructed in way that maximizes confusion. Every single name in this book -- and there are many, many names that get a mention, some that deserve it and some that don't -- gets mentioned 25 pages before who that person is actually gets explained. It's a shame, because it seems like this is among the few even passable book on the history of the Protocols. Someone can do better than this.
I'm glad to be done with this one. It stayed on my TBR for a long time and, to it's credit, you do get a fairly good chronology of the Protocols themselves.
The author is, however a lawyer, and does not have the sensibilities of a novelist, so there are a lot of discussions about points that the casual reader would just as soon 'stipulate' and get on with it.
Also the second two thirds of the book revolve around court cases where the Protocols were challenged and attempts to ban it. This led to a lot of repetition and lengthy passages about legal maneuvers that were not very interesting to me.
The argument made is for censorship which I disagree with, but this particular book would be one of the few extremes that test the premise that censorship is always wrong. The overwhelming majority of the readers of the Protocols would be people who are keen on it's message; 'Preaching to the Choir' in it's purest form.
ONE OF THE MOST INFORMATIVE BOOKS REGARDING ANTISEMITISM I’VE RECENTLY READ. THE WEB OF HATRED AND TOLERANCE OF POGROMS AGAINST JEWS IS RENDERED WITH A MULTITUDE OF FACTS AND SUPPORTIVE DETAIL NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND HOW WIDESPREAD MISTREATMENT OF JEWS WAS AND CONTINUES TO BE. THE INVOLVEMENT OF FRANCE, GERMANY, RUSSIA, AND SOUTH AFRICA IS DISTURBING AS IS THE PERSISTENCE AND SEEMINGLY UNENDING CHOICES FOR ATTACKING, HUMILIATING, AND OFTENTIMES MURDERING JEWS.
Sitting almost 10 years in my to read list. Finally able to read and finish it. For curiosity sake and have to read the actual The Protocols of the Elders of Zion
1% of the book is trying to disprove the Protocol of the Elders of Zion document. The rest of the book is poor advocacy for censorship of the work. It is not with censorship and repression that you end up with anti-Semitic ideas. I even say that this kind of attitude has the exact opposite effect.
