I really enjoyed this book! Ruby, the main character gets vague dreams in which a mysterious boy speaks to her the words "you owe me". Who is this boy and what does she owe him? The book picks up well and is a smooth read, I myself am a very slow reader and still finished this in 3 days because I could hardly put it down. The plot throughout the book is put on the back burner a bit due to the strong presence of the love story, but around the last 30 pages everything makes perfect sense. The book is full of plot twists and surprises you every time. I definitely recommend the book to readers who really enjoyed JLA's Lux series!

So first of all I need to admit, that I normally don't really read Sci-Fi. But this one is one of my favorites, if not my favorite. This was the first book I have ever read from Blanche Maze but I surely need more. I really loved the story with all of the characters. I also need to read the second one ASAP. I can only suggest reading this book if you like some enemies to lovers or a beautiful love story. I also really like how there is so much diversity in this book.

This book was not what I expected. Two teens finding a way to each other that is completely unexplained.

« You Owe Me » est le premier roman qui m’a été envoyé suite à une conversation sur Instagram avec son auteure (du moins, en 2021, ma mémoire ne me permet pas de remonter plus haut). Il faut dire que le pitch de base me plaisait beaucoup : une jeune fille rêve d’un jeune homme qu’elle n’a jamais vu, jusqu’au jour où elle le rencontre dans la vraie vie et son monde change. Etant une passionnée des histoires avec des « soulmates » ou « âmes-sœurs », l’idée de rêver d’un inconnu qui se révèle ne pas en être un, mais être ton âme-sœur, il FALLAIT que je découvre le roman. Et on peut dire que j’ai été surprise. Pas déçue. Surprise. Je vous en dis plus ?
Première surprise : le roman est en anglais. Je ne sais plus à quelle heure nous avons eu la conversation, ni à quel moment j’ai téléchargé le roman, mais je n’avais visiblement pas regardé que le résumé était en anglais et qu’il fallait s’attendre à ce que le roman le soit aussi. Oups ? Donc, on fait la rencontre de Ruby Heaven, une jeune lycéenne qui se prépare pour son premier jour d’école, après s’être réveillée d’un rêve très réaliste dans lequel elle est poursuivie par un jeune homme qui lui paraît familier… Et elle en fait un second dans le même chapitre. J’admets que j’ai trouvé les scènes de rêves assez efficace et sympathique. Ils sont en général très courts, quelques paragraphes, une phrase de dialogue et pouf, on est de retour dans le vrai monde. J’ai vraiment eu un fou-rire quand sa meilleure amie semble surprise d’apprendre que Ruby rêve (ce qui, NORMALEMENT, arrive à 100% des individus) mais je suppose que le roman se déroule dans un univers où le fait de rêver est rare et n’arrive visiblement qu’à certaines personnes. Un univers dans lequel les films Marvel existent quand même. Je dois dire qu’au départ, le jeune homme dans ses rêves n’aide pas vraiment, puisque la seule phrase qu’il dit est la même : « you owe me » (tu m’es redevable). Mais on ne sait ni pourquoi, ni à quel sujet (et Ruby non plus). Donc ça n’aide PERSONNE.
A travers la lecture du roman, on nous laisse petit à petit comprendre que le garçon dans ses rêves est visiblement également réel et en train de l’observer, notamment la nuit. Puis, Ruby mentionne un certain « Jake », qu’elle a connu lorsqu’elle vivait encore à Los Angeles (donc ça se passe dans notre monde ?) et on sent qu’il y a une histoire derrière tout ça (mais je ne dirais rien pour ne pas spoiler, il vous faudra lire le roman !). Je dois dire que pendant le premier quart du roman, le garçon des rêves (que j’ai surnommé « dreamboy ») est absolument terrifiant. Dans les rêves, il dit toujours la même ligne et dans la réalité, il suit Ruby, semble clairement l’observer, mais dès qu’elle essaie de venir vers lui, il s’évanouit dans la nature. Disons qu’à la moitié du roman, j’ai clairement remis en doute mon idée que le deux soit des âmes-sœurs, parce que son comportement est plus qu’étrange. On finit par avoir son prénom et l’entendre parler plus que pour dire la même phrase dans des rêves et ça n’enlève RIEN à son comportement terrifiant. En tant que personnage, je dois avouer que j’aime plutôt bien Ruby. Elle est débrouillarde, très proche de sa meilleure amie (et j’adore leur relation) et elle se comporte bien comme une adolescente de son âge, ce qui est assez rare dans ce type de roman. Elle a des comportements parfois assez enfantins et des réflexions étranges, mais ça passe au vu de son âge.
On peut dire que le début de la relation entre Ruby et Léo (dreamboy) est assez….ratée ? Comme je l’ai dit, Léo ne fait vraiment rien pour se rendre agréable ou moins terrifiant. A la Klaus Mickaelson, il commence à appeler Ruby « love » et semble vouloir absolument la connaître, ce qu’elle prend relativement mal (je te comprends choupette). Mais au final, j’ai été surprise de voir la vitesse à laquelle les deux enterrent (plus ou moins) la hache de guerre et admettent avoir rêvé l’un de l’autre avant même de s’être croisé pour la première fois. Et c’est ça qui va vraiment lancer l’intrigue du roman : comment et pourquoi ont-ils été connectés et dans quel but ? Et j’ai le plaisir de vous annoncer que je n’ai pas la réponse non plus ! La fin du roman invite clairement à une suite, surtout que des éléments sont introduits assez tardivement dans le récit. Je pense qu’il y a énormément de potentiel pour une suite avec ce récit, parce qu’il y a beaucoup d’éléments sans réponse. La relation entre Ruby et Léo est adorable et très poétique, en un sens. Avec ce qu’on sait à la fin, je me demande cependant si c’est supposé durer ou si c’est juste un effet de la transfusion… J’ai aussi apprécié les diverses références à de la pop-culture (X-Men, Marvel, Teen Wolf aussi je crois). Une lecture vraiment agréable et bien écrite !

This book was a very good start to the series. It had a lot of character building for the majority of the book and it was full of mystery and so many unanswered questions that kept my interest piqued and kept me going.
The slow burn was S.L.O.W!!! But once more of the plot was revealed, I finished the book in one sitting!
Ruby & Hannah's connection was something I really resonated with, me & my childhood bestie are basically Ruby & Hannah in all aspects 😂 and seeing their bond made me warm and fuzzy inside!!! I wouldn't have minded if the story was based on them two instead, I loved them that much!
I wasn't sure about Ruby & Leo and I'm still not 100% convinced. Their conversations weren't that deep as I would have expected and although they slowly fell in love, it kinda felt rushed at the same time. 🤔
The book ended up in a cliffhanger with a major plot twist (which I didn't expect) and left me with so many questions!!! 😂

Okay so, knowing that this was Blanche's very first book it was good. It's a quick read, it's an easy read and although it's slow at times, everytime I got a little bored there was something that kept me reading.
Although I have to say that I don't think first person POV benefitted the story. There was a lot of repetitives "I, I, I" at the start of sentences which fortunately got better the more the book developed
The pace somehow felt fast AND slow and idk how I feel about that
I really like ruby and I really like leo tho and the ending of the book really got me on the edge of my seat

Excited to jump into book two!
Ruby dreams of a mysterious boy she has never met. Then she sees him at school and discovers he’s been dreaming of her too! They have an unexplainable connection that draws them together.

Ruby doesn't dream, or she has never remembered until she starts streaming of a mysterious boy. She is never met. But they seem familiar. She discovers him at school and finds out he dreams of her too. They have a special connection. I really enjoy the author's mix of sci-fi and paranormal and romance. It is a slow story building. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and will be reading the next book in the series. I also really enjoyed the author's world building.

The story line is pretty good but the connection to the characters just wasn't there for me. I wish I could have felt more connected, there was just something missing.

An intriguing story from start to finish. Endearing and well-written characters. A wonderful friendship between Ruby and Hannah. And, above all, a very cute romance. I can't wait to have all my questions answered. But also, to be able to spend more time alongside Ruby and Leo.

I didn't know what to expect going into this book but I was excited. I've started liking Sci-Fi more so thought this would be a really good read to dive into. The plot was okay. It was written like the classic YA books from 2008/2010 which made me feel very nostalgic and it was a surprise to see. The imagery in this book was great and there was a lot of mystery involved with the dreaming, and I wanted to know more. It was a good introduction to the world. And the ending blew me away, I was shocked at that twist and do want to continue with the series.
Ruby was an interesting character. She was very level headed, kind of bossy. I liked having a glimpse into her life, where she was the classic American High Schooler who juggled a ton of hobbies along with homework. Then there's Leo. I don't know what to think of Leo, there's just something off about him that I can't put my finger on.
Seeing that Leo was from the UK was cool, but did want to scream at Ruby that when he called her "Love" he wasn't flirting!
The biggest issue I found with this book was that I didn't know what genre I was reading. I couldn't get Sci-Fi from the majority of the plot until the end and it showed me why I don't like just straight up romance in books. The plot also moved very slow because it took a while to get to the point, I often found myself bored and I personally hate the insta-love trope.
Hoping in book 2, more Sci-Fi presents itself, this book did have a lot of potential to be bigger than just going to school, doing home work, fall in love with a guy after he said three words; you know the usual. You Owe Me. Three little words but probably the most powerful weapon he holds against me. This book is proof that you don't need to go to college for something to excel in it. Blanche is such a talented writer!! The entire time I was reading the book my jaw was on the floor. I loved the suspense of the plot, and the cliff hanger ending 🙊 I love how her character had a healthy relationship with her parents, I feel that was needed. If you like suspense and romance, this is definitely your book! Honestly, I have no bad reviews for this book, there was a lot of romance, which I'm not totally fond of, but that's just me, the way she wrote out the romance was brilliant!!!! You should definitely read this book!

I like the fantasy universe and the cliffhanger ending, however there was a bit too much romance to my liking but that's a personal taste.
