When teammates turn into rivals, friends will become enemies.

After an entire year involved in the secret government game of hide and seek known as the Military Camouflage Challenge, or MC Squared, Chase is once again in the dangerous position of team captain. After his old teammate Harla gathers a team of her own, suddenly nobody’s around to support him.

As Harla commits to finding out who runs the mysterious game, Chase commit to winning. When the game endangers the lives of everyone’s teams, they’ll have to put aside their differences to save their mentors, friends, and exes. But maybe Chase cares more about winning than helping his enemies.

My 12-year-old son and I both read Miss: The Girl in Disguise. I'll base most of this review on his opinions, since he's the target audience!

As with Chase: The Boy Who Lived, Book 1 of this series, my son and I both loved the LGBTQ+ representation in this book. It's nice to see such representation in a book targeted at the lower-YA crowd. (There's a lot of rep in upper-YA books but not as much in books aimed at middle schoolers!)

My son read the book quite quickly, which showed me that he was invested in the plot. He said it started a bit slowly, but then it picked up, and he enjoyed it.

While this book didn't feel as polished as Book 1, it did include a lot of the same good qualities: adventure, representation, cool tech, and likable characters. If you loved Chase: The Boy Who Lived, pick up Miss: The Girl in Disguise to continue the story!

Thank you to Z Jeffries for providing me with a copy for an honest review!

Be prepared to hit the ground running, because Miss: The Girl in Disguise drops readers straight into a new game. Only this time Harla is the captain. Stuck on the sidelines for six months, Chase has been temporarily suspended from gameplay due to events from the previous novel. But as his time to shine approaches, he’s going to find being captain isn’t so easy this time. When his old team turns their back on him, he’s left scrambling to pick up the pieces.

A new point of view enters the stage and readers are allowed to see Harla’s side of the story in addition to Chase. The animosities Chase and Harla feel towards one another are intense. Z Jeffries did a great job building the rivalry between them. And as a reader, I knew a lot of Chase's anger was unfounded, but it supports how young he is. For a fifteen year old, Chase has a lot sitting on his shoulders. The combination of home life and MC² puts him in a tough spot and he tends to take his anger out on Harla and the old team.

MC² reaches a new level of intensity in Miss: The Girl in Disguise. While Chase is out to win, Harla is hunting down information on the Council. As the game takes on a new level of danger, it proves to Harla that she must take down the masterminds behind it. But Chase is determined to win and overthrowing the Council is the last thing on his mind.

As the two characters battle through the arena, I found myself immersed in creative battle tactics and mind bending technology. There were a few times I felt lost as the shift in location jarred me, but the sheer intensity of the battles kept me engaged. Fans of mech battles and sci-fi brawls will love this book. This was a great addition to the Hide & Seek series! I can’t wait to read the next one!

A great sequel

Jeffries pens a grand story in Miss: The Girl in Disguise. I have read work from this author before, and I really enjoyed it. This is the second book in the Hide & Seek Chronicles. I read the first one, and it was a wonderful read, and I liked this one as well. Chase is a complex character, with a lot of depth. The story is in a world where people have to hide their true being, so, it's very, very realistic, even though is a YA fantasy. Chase and This author has a great imagination and I'm glad it's being shared with stories. Chase and Harla are pitted against each other, and then ... that's where I'll leave this. It is a very well-written story, and I enjoyed it. It is always a joy to read this author's stories. It is indeed an incredible story of "Hide" and "seek." The author's technique of raw, magnetic characters and great plotlines is a gift. It's a great story to follow and try to figure out what will happen next. This author's characters develop and interacts well with the other characters. I look forward to reading the books that follow this on. Miss: The Girl in Disguise is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author.

I like the series overall, but I'll admit this book had me fumbling to switch gears. Instead of playing the game, much of the narrative in this book involves Chase using his resources to spy on Harla's progress and personal life. While it makes sense in the grand scheme of things, the invasion of privacy is borderline creepy. Harla's obsessed with a conspiracy, and given the intense levels of military & corporate espionage involved, she's probably not wrong. But it's hard to guess which facts are important.

Again, this could be considered upper middle grade, verging into YA territory, especially since a year's passed and Chase hits puberty (or vice versa). Hi-tech action, military scheming, and LGBTQIA+ cast members (non-binary, lesbian, and bisexual). Fair warning: the action can and does turn deadly.

Harla, or Captain Miss, is still harassing Chase. When Chase is chosen as team Captain again, Harla leaves and takes the entire team except for Dr, Bird with her. Chase gets his own team in place but is furious with his ex-team members, feeling like they have betrayed him. He is so focused on winning the game, that he comes close to killing both Diamond and Harla. This is a truly amazing story with lots of pulse-pounding action. HIghly recommended.
