Based on True Events Five friends go for a picnic at the lake; only four return. What happened? No one is talking. Sometimes you’re in prison sometimes you carry the prison with you. Kenny contacted his old high school friend who spent his career as a crime reporter in the neighbouring city and is now semi-retired. He convinces him to drive all the way back out to the small town they both grew up in. Kenny has a secret he needs to talk about, and he wants Thomas Coleman to hear it – to write about it. He wishes he had come clean years ago. It would have been so much better instead of living under the shadow of this secret. And shit happens and it wasn’t on purpose and looking back he knows he would’ve been better off coming clean from the beginning.
💋Victoria Michaels is the author of the Stephanie Unchained series and is a breakout author of dozens of steamy romance novels. Victoria lives in the rural Canadian Rockies with her husband where they regularly enjoy hiking, kayaking, and cycling.
Kenny Hughes lives in a trailer park. He calls his friend Tommy Coleman and asks him to come to Barrington. He tells Tommy that he is dying of cancer and wants to tell his story to Tommy before he dies. Tommy is a retired journalist. He grew up in Barrington. He and his wife live in Portland. This is his first time back to Barrington in a very long time. Kenny starts his story by telling Tommy that even after 55 years, he still remembers a beautiful girl who had long blonde hair. Kenny didn’t know that he was in love at the time, but he knows now that he has loved her his whole life.
Everyone who is from Barrington, Washington has heard the story of Donna Richardson. Everyone has always wanted to know the real story of what happened to her.
55 years ago, Cheryl Walker was dating Danny Campbell. She introduced her best friend Donna to Kenny. Donna and Kenny had only known each other for about 2 weeks. Kenny and Danny have been dealing pot out of an old shed on Kenny’s father’s property. They have been working with Danny’s cousin Greg Bennett. Kenny has a bad feeling about Greg. However, Greg has the connections they need, so for now, Kenny is putting up with him. Donna suggests that they have a picnic at the lake after the guys finish doing their deliveries for the day. She and Cheryl make a picnic lunch and Greg has a cooler with beer and wine in it. They pile into Cheryl’s convertible and head to the lake. They are having a fun day and Kenny and Donna get closer. Then, Greg starts some problems. The four of them, Kenny, Danny, Cheryl and Greg end up going to the police station. Cheryl stays in the convertible and refuses to go inside. The guys tell the police that Donna ran off and that they can’t find her. Donna is never seen by her family and friends again.
I was in shock when the true story is finally revealed. Poor Donna. Poor Kenny and poor Cheryl and Danny.

This suspense story kept me guessing. Kenny is dying and has invited Thomas to record the truth of an incident that happened years ago. Over three days Kenny recites to Thomas his involvement in the girl's disappearance. I got so involved in the story, I felt like I was sitting next to Thomas leaning in to catch any idea to help me solve the mystery. This is a story that will stay with you long after the last page is turned. If you don't grab this, you will be missing out on an exciting read. I received a free copy of this book from the author and this is my honest review.
This was a very well written book. The characters were vibrant and engaging. I really enjoyed it especially when I realized that it was true. It’s a story of 4 friends out one night by the lake. Two couples, young and in love. When one guys bad cousin decides to make a fun night of love into a nightmare for those left behind. As the story unfolds, we are finally able to get answers to a 50 something year old mystery of a young girl’s disappearance. While I received this book as an ARC reading, I am voluntarily writing a review
This is based on a true story. I have never read anything by Victoria Michaels before, this was fantastic; I read this in one sitting. The story starts with five friends going to the lake for a picnic; but only four return. The best friend of Donna's says absolutely nothing. Kenny, Donna's (missing) boyfriend is totally destroyed. The others, Tommy and Greg; all told the same story. So what happened to Donna; after fifty years it's time someone told the truth!!
This was an amazingly suspenseful story. I have never read anything fun this author before. But I was completely blown away at how well it was written. Being based on true events, this story had a depth to it that really pulls you in and keeps you invested. I’ve never read anything like this before, but it was so good. From the first page to the last. I couldn’t put this book down. Truly amazing. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author.
It is an awesome book and I see it's based on a true story. It is very well written and I see you have done thorough research in finding all the information to the true story. It has a very surprising ending but very well worth the read. Thanx so much
The title of the book peaked my interest to read this book. And once I started reading I couldn't put it down. This is the first book I have read by author Victoria Michaels but it won't be my last. Such a well written book that I loved reading. And I highly recommend...
I loved the storyline in this book. The flashbacks and the way Kenny described what happened kept me so engaged and wanting to know more. I seriously couldn't put this book down!
Victoria Michaels has a talent for telling an amazing story in a short amount of time. This is a heartbreaking story of friendship, love, and betrayal. It may have triggers for some.
