Virtutis gloria merces Translation: Glory is the reward of valor
Fed up with playing the normal game, recent university graduate, ex-cum laude, ex-soccer star, ex-popular and mostly broke Kera MacDonagh changes her life when she decides to research how to be a witch... And believes it.
Kera didn’t want to go back east and deal with her overbearing Mom. So, when university was done, she stayed behind in Los Angeles.
Little did she realize how controlling moms can be from the other side of the country.
Feeling a little desperate to make her own way, she buys a few books on business.
I'm only giving it 3 stars because while it's a fun premise... I'm not sure I actually like any of the characters. The thaumaturgy peeps have mammoth egos, sitting as judge, jury, and executioner over emerging powers as if they have any right. As if behaving that way isn't just as dangerous a path towards evil.
I might like Kera, but I'm undecided because I can't tell if she is making fucking terrible decisions because she's punch-drunk on magic, or she's TSTL. I can't stand TSTL characters, and was borderline dnf a few times because she was so fucking stupid and full of herself. But there were several indications that magic in this world is dangerous because it is addictive, and her bad choices were always related to magic use, so... I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt for now.
But if magic is leading her to be this stupid, that means James and the other council witches are insanely stupid for releasing it out into the world like this. People are going to kill themselves. They probably already are.
So yeah, I'm just not sure. I'll give it another book to see.
It’s not bad, just wish it wasn’t so “body focused” the way her magic started is a great concept. Becoming a witch and trying to figure out how to be a witch is interesting. You definitely need to concentrate to follow the different storylines so you can see them connect.
I really tried to read to the end, but I couldn't do it. Kera, the female lead, has only a vague back story and a mother that calls her constantly to remind her she's currently a failure and getting older by the minute. Otherwise, Kera's pretty much an idiot who can't remember to eat and ignores death warnings on spells she's trying. Then there's a confusing trio of criminals and of course the stupid one is hot for Kera. At the 74% line, very little has happened. We've learned nothing new about Kera, except that she's eating even less when she's learned the hard way that she needs to eat more, and she can do basic magic so she's going to try something she knows could kill her. Oh, and the subplot with the 3 drug dealers gave us no info except what their basic plan is...and for some reason starting gang wars is going to help them. There are at least 2 other groups of people involved here, but as yet they really aren't worth mentioning.
The main reason I stopped reading this book-and there are a lot of options-is that I despise stupid main characters. This girl passes out from hunger quite often, yet can't remember to eat? Especially when eating will help her? Nah, I'm not wasting more time on her. ✋🐺
To be fair...... I have just come off a C.R. Daems kick so I was expecting my heroine to be more: kickass, intellectually, together, etc. HTBBW was not bad, it just felt like a way to waste away in between books. There in lies my problem with this author.... I never seem to be able to give two shits about what happens in his stories. Maybe I am just getting cynical in my middle years. Good reading my friends.
PS..... to date there are actually several books starring this MC: 1. How to be a Badass Witch 2. How to be a Badass Vigilante 3. How to be a Badass Detective
Kera is a bartender who lives in a warehouse in Los Angeles, has a BS in computer science and comes from a well off family with a somewhat. overbearing mother. She is model level beutiful but not vain.
She buys "How to be a Badass Witch" for her tablet on a lark and starts reading it on a day where anything serious is out. It turns out the book is real magic.
Throw in a corporate meth group, a incedibly bashful potential boyfriend, a friendly shop owner with arthritis who is more than he seems, and the "author" of the book and action and hilarity ensue.
It does start a little slow to flesh out the characters. So give it some pages if what you want is action.
Ok since discovering Mr. Anderle I’ve been happily reading anything from his Mr. Brownstone series and off shoots to the first one Queen becomes her and all of those. Thanks to COVID having to stay home because of unfortunately being of high risk senior citizen with a family unwilling to allow us(my husband and I) to risk it’s very depressing these books have been so very entertaining. Now once more I’ve found a new well written book from him and as usual waiting very impatiently for the next one, so please please write faster lol! So please check out his other books..so he’ll write faster ...see a method to my madness! Lol
I purchased the book due to the reviews. Have never read this author before. Will make sure I get a sample read before a future purchase. Story very choppy and continuity left a lot to be desired. Character development was so so. If a story is good and keeps my attention I will overlook a lot of the above. Not impressed.
I haven't been writing reviews for books, but I'm going to attempt to write them now and in the future. I came across this book on a Facebook ad I believe from Kindle Unlimited. I wanted to give the book 5 stars because of the novelty of magic system described and the writing style but at the same time, my 5 stars are reserved for those GREAT mind-blowing books that I know I will always cherish and probably reread. While this book filled a void in the Kindle Unlimited trope-fest I was enduring, it didn't quite blow my mind enough for 5 stars, but definitely more than 3! Little did I know that this author is actually the author of another KU series I've been intending to read but haven't yet. Now that I know this author is a decent, if not great write, I will be perusing his other books, which evidently he has other pen names.
The author writes the story from a few different view points as the characters have not encountered each other yet. At first I was weary about this style of writing, but Michael Anderle does it well and does not confuse the reader. It does tend to drag the story out so it isn't as fast-paced as many urban fantasy books I've read but the world development is superb, the characters are fascinating, and the suspense generated from this writing style has kept me turning the pages. My favorite part of this story is the uniqueness with the magic system in the book.
How to be a Badass Witch is the first book of the series, by Michael Anderle.
This book didn’t really turn out how I suspected. I’m a little upset over James and Mother LeBlanc not discovering Kera within this first installment. But, almost equally as happy with the building of her own character development in such a short time. The drive to make an impactful mark within ones short life, the desire to help others, and the understanding of ones own limits all within such a confined timeline.
Kera is becoming an interesting pivot point within this literary universe. She’s obviously going to have an impact in some inconceivable way. But I’m also curious about the developments that will come forth from those connected to her: Christian and Ted becoming possible magic users. Civen’s reaction to the memory spell used on him. And if she or the thaumaturges will have an impact on the mounting panic and machinations Johnny and Sven are helping orchestrate.
I wonder how her day-to-day life will transition once these forces meet? And if the way she warned off Johnny will bring more violence to those at the Mermaid. He doesn’t seem the type to let this go.
What would you do if you’d completed your degree in Computer Science but couldn’t bring yourself to take a job which would mean sitting in a cubicle all day? Well Kera decided to take a job as a bartender while she thought about things for a while. But her mother has other ideas and just won’t leave Kera alone! After one particularly harrowing call Kera pulled out her computer and typed in ‘How to’. Among the pebbles she found a pearl! How to be a Badass Witch! With nothing to lose she bought it and that’s when she found out Magic Is Real. At least for her it is. What she didn’t know is that the organisation that put the book out in the hope of finding one or two prospects, has been flooded with them. Meantime, Kera’s boss is leaned on by a new gang in town and Kera uses her new found skills to deal with the threat. But it’s not that easy and soon Kera finds herself biting off more than she can chew. Luckily, she is befriended by the Kims, local shopkeepers who she was able to help with her new found healing ability. Love the story and the warnings attached to it.
This was good, moved a bit slow for me and meandered on annoying banal tedium. I liked the idea though and the characters were well rounded with distinct personalities, which I love.
This is not a complaint, just a note: How fucking stupid is it to not only release your grimoire, but work on getting it to be a bestseller — with intent that complete novices would be doing magic.. and not
A) Remove dangerous/harmful spells. B) Add in some type of disclaimer or guidance like “will make you tired and hungry when you overdo it” C) Warn them not to overuse magic cus they might BLOW THEMSELVES UP
Then they go on a merry road trip with pit stops and sightseeing, instead of collecting those who are in legit danger.
And as for the FMC, I thought she was smart but the fact that she used the memory spell on herself so many times really makes me question her intelligence. The first night gets a pass.. but doing it again? Dummy. At no point, even after she read the “dont overtax yourself” portion, did she consider that she should maybe pace herself. Even after not recognizing herself in the mirror. tstl
Once again, I find myself in readers paradise with this "Bad-Ass" series!!! Kera is his newest spunky heroine. I love his new magic premise, and his characters are a delight to get to know. How many of us would love to find out we could perform magic, and then use it to help others? Me, I would probably magic up a cape (and a better figure) to help out others. Thank you for keeping us in laughter and amazement through this horrible pandemic, Mr. Anderle! You and your pseudonyms, coauthors and new authors are helping thousands stay sane. Please, stay safe, healthy and happy.
The premise sounded good, then the first chapter was good. After that the POV shifted around between at least 4 different characters, shifting every half chapter or so. The book started out like pleasant popcorn then tried to shift into multi layered drama while still being written like pleasant popcorn. Got through 8 or so chapters before I quit. I was interested in the titular MC, sort of interested in the Mentor viewpoint, and really didn't care about the other POVs, and the rapid fire POV changes made this more an more like reading a bunch of loosely connected vignettes rather than a story.
This series has potential, but my main issue with HTBABW was that the author kept the characters quite bland, and that the set up of having Kera and the witches meet, which should have been the goal, didn’t eventuate. Instead we got the antagonists POVs, and their drug dealing angle, which seems to be just an added side plot that I’m not sure I liked.
An overarching storyline is a great thing to have (saving magic, etc.) but I enjoy it more when every book has the main plot de jour wrapped up by the end of the book while still having the larger unfolding mystery that holds the series together.
Not sure whether I’ll continue on with the series.
I didn't really have any strong feelings towards this book - good or bad. I listened to the entire book on Audible and the narration was fine. The characters were all just "okay" and I really couldn't find a reason to like or dislike the main character. Yes, she has magic but now you want to be a "superhero?"
Have you thought through why you're telling people that "LA Witches own the territory?" I mean, really? What does that even mean?
I was hoping that more would develop earlier with her old study buddy, and by more - that they would go on a date. We spend the entire book without the two of them really connecting and then having to listen to phone conversations with her mother berating the fact that she has an awful job and does not have a man. Thanks mom.
Will the story get better as the series progresses? I'm not sure. I might peruse the summaries and see what I find.
When you graduate college and find what you went to school for isn't what moves you, you find something else. Kera, our main character has this issue, and others to drive her over achieving mother nuts in spades. The characters are well written, the storyline a unique twist on apprenticeships, the humor fun, the sarcasm a welcome break from the saccharine normal, and the intent to do good phenomenal. It's was a good, quick read. Thank you for a ride on zee, and the memory of oil changes, the smells, the sounds, etc...I miss motorcycles like good gumbo.
This Urban Fantasy is splendid. Kera MacDonagh wants her style, not her mom's. During a phone call, her mom riles her up to the point she looks for "How To" books on the Internet, where she purchased "How to be a Badass Witch."
The main character puts the knowledge she's gained to practical use from the beginning, helping others. While there are four prevailing plotlines, none of them reach closure. It seems the series constitutes a single collective story. Nonetheless, this is a superb introduction.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.
If it isn't a life lesson on all those "great ideas" we have we never write i'm not sure.
Anyway, back to the review:
And that's sort of the point. The book is the filler arc of an anime. NOTHING HAPPENS! because the author is not writing a book he's hoping to write a 90 book light novel series and mother fudger we need the cliff notes.
Filler on filler on filler on time wasting. i got through 3 books, honest to the gods.
It needs someone who wants to write a normal sized series to take a butcher knife to this thing.
I love the start of a Michael Anderle book. A little snark, a little cussing and a lot of excellent characterization. That said I want Michael to know how much he's appreciated. His ending thoughts are so on my mind. How many headaches are going on right now about how financially crippling Covid. -19 is to the American culture. Let's face it we are a socially grounded society. A lot of us are hired by restaurants, theaters, and so many other businesses. No business means bankruptcies. Pray for our nation.
Kera is a extremely bright person, who holds a degree in computer science. She works as a bartender because she fears she'd be bored to tears working an entry level job in her field. Her mother doesn't get it. She wants Kera to excel in her work and go places. Kera is surfing the net when she comes across a book called "How to be a Badass Witch". It intrigues her so she orders it. This opens quite a new chapter in her life. This book has all the humor and intrigue that you expect from an Anderle book. Looking forward to book 2
Witches are among us, some are open and some are secretive. The story is concerned with those of real power, who have chosen to remain quietly behind the scenes. As a result, their numbers are dwindling and because of their secrecy they are having problems locating new recruits. One of the council of witches published a book of spells and devised a way to locate the people able to read and use the book. Such begins the journey. A good read.
I have been a fan of LMBPM books since late December 2015. I've found that I can count on just about anything with Michael Anderle's have on the cover. And this book was no different. I'm looking forward to where this new series will go. Already intrigued by the characters introduced. So glad I'll be able to read the next book so soon! 😀 Highly Recommend!
Darn you Michael Anderle you are making my tbr list way to long. I love your writing and now I am hooked on another awesome series. I really like the characters in this book and am enjoying both storylines. I like the way the main character is teaching herself magic and using it to help people out. I am looking forward to the next book and the two storylines meeting up.
If you're looking for an Urban fantasy with some serious supporting story, then you won't get much better than this selection. Really liked this one, and since the second one comes out in a few hours, I guess I'll have to stay up to get that one too. I fully intend to follow this series as far as it goes, this looks like it's going to be a very interesting series, and I don't want to miss a minute of it.
Honestly?! I like the story! Its amazing tought and love the idea a lot! And being a badass witch. I even like the characters, Kera, Chris, Ted, James and Mother LB. Even I like Johnny! But.... there is sg. Maybe the stlye? Maybe the change of story? Dunno really, but made it sometimes hard for me to continue to read. Anyways! As I liked the story I will definitely pick the next!!!
DNF at around 50% I am a fan of some of the other series of Michael Anderle but this was horrible. The pace was utter garbage and there was no real personality to the charaters. As if that wasn't enough it kept switching between 4 different POV and not in a good way. Even if you're a fan of Michael Anderles's other books I would advice you against this series. It dosen't even have a vague story or plot all you know is they want more magic users so they publish a book.
Reviews in depth on Kobo.co.nz. suffice to say that I loved the story and the narration (since I listened to the audiobook version). However, this would have got 5 stars of the story had an ending, even a temporary ending. I will not be buying any sequel as I abhor stories that are incomplete. No story arc, no character arc, just a end of book mid-way through. This is not a cliffhanger, this is an incomplete novel.
Y'all... I seriously just love this man's books. He's funny, and brings ideas to life that I never would have thought of. I get so engrossed in.n the worlds he creates that I sometimes forget that I can't do the things some of his characters can do! 😜 Seriously- give ANY of his books a read. This book though is one of my new favorites. I'm intrigued.
if you can go around that. I like the story, premise, etc. but there are some things that are just too obvious filling in words. Stuff that goes off topic or sounds off or weird. There are some awkward moments, lacking a smooth transition. And names and le blanc travelling by car are just mildly stupid. Hoping it smooths out in bk 2. Ill give it a chance.
