About the author

Maria Matios is a contemporary Ukrainian writer. Winner of the “Book of the Year 2004” and of the Taras Shevchenko National Award in 2005 (for her novel Sweet Darusia). Maria Matios bases her books on the unique experiences of her family, whose roots go back as far as 1790. She was born in the village of Roztoky in the Bukovyna region. Presently she resides in Kyiv.

A masterpiece in all its seeming simplicity, this story set in early 20th century Ukraine revolves around a rural community that is bound by tradition, but gets torn apart by everybody's lack of happiness in their relationships. Using multiple perspectives, the actual events and everyone's motivations become gradually clear.

3.5. Hardly Ever Otherwise is told from three points of view and is all about a murder in a small Ukrainian village. Now you all may know that Ukraine is a place close to my heart. My great-great grandparents came from Ukraine to the States in the early 1900s. I had a chance to visit a friend who was in the Peace Corps there last year. There are not very many books written in English about Ukraine, so I was very excited for this book.

I loved the setting! The village is in a pretty remote mountainous area of Ukraine. The people of the village really only have each other. The village in the story is small and everyone seems to be in everyone else's business. They all know each other well, which is why the brutal murder seems to shake the village especially hard.

I thought it was really interesting how the author chose to tell the story from the point of view of the women in the village versus the men. I think it was very telling. The story takes place during the mid-century where gender was still an issue and to a degree, gender still plays a role in Ukrainian society even today.

I thought the translation of the book was pretty good and stayed true to the intention of the story. The ebook version that I received did have a lot of errors and mispellings, especially towards the beginning of the book. Hopefully these things are eventually cleaned up.

Bottom line: Good insight into a little known part of the world!

Після "Солодкої Дарусі", здавалося, що інша книга Марії Матіос буде не настільки крутою. Але Марія Матіос - це феномен. Ця книга так само прекрасна, сповнена болю і сліз, мова пречудова, читаєш і летиш по тексту, прочитала за кілька годин. Неймовірний текст, неймовірно важлива історія українців і українського села.

Несподівано для себе прочитала. Було цікаво6 що в тій книзі такого, що навіть підлітка зачиталася? Думаю, прогляну сторінок 10, тим більше точно знаю - Матіос не моя авторка. Раніше читала "Солодку Дарусю" і зрозуміла, що не моє. Ані тема, ані мова.
А тут не змогла відірватися від цієї буковинської шекспірівщини. І хоч авторка і досі не моя, але визнаю, що книжка написана дуже майстерно і історія закручена так, що не лишає байдужою.

Y'all, I have been having the worst luck with these books lately in that I keep picking ones that are depressing as all hell! This one got far darker than I was expecting, including a horrifying and graphic murder that was really quite upsetting, and generally some beliefs and practices that, while I'm certain are realistic, are pretty fucking depressing to read about as a woman. I did think it was a somewhat fascinating look at a village and the darker side of love and lust and human nature in general, but there was basically zero hope or brightness in this story, and I'm bloody well sick of books about the unrelenting depressiveness of existence... I think this is probably quite a good book, but I didn't enjoy myself for one moment, so I've gotta round down to 2 stars.

Hardly Ever Otherwise by Maria Matios is the tale of a brief period in a small village in Ukraine, told from different perspectives. I was horrified by the amount of casual brutality used against wives and daughters, that appears to have been accepted and even expected in the community. I found the book a bit dull, and none of the characters terribly interesting.

Цю книгу читала на літературний клуб. Ну от не моя книга, все що сподобалось це стиль автора, дуже гарно написано, з гуцульським діалектом і описані звичаї. Але читати було дуже важко. Сум, жах, горе, біль, несправедливість.. - десь такий опис історії в мене склався.

"Майже ніколи не навпаки" М. Матіос. Сумна книга...Чи є хоч один по-справжньому щасливий герой в цій родинній історії? Чи може ця історія надихнути або окрилити? Чи змушує вона любити людей і пишатися українцями чи тими, хто за румунами жив на цій землі? Я не впевнена, що на ці питання можна відповісти ствердно. Принаймні, авторка, на мій погляд, не має такого наміру, щоб читач відповів "так".
Натомість ми стаємо свідками трагічних подій і стосунків між членами кількох родин маленького селища і мимоволі вмикаємося у перипетії їхніх непростих історій, в яких панівною рушійною силою стає жага до збагачення (заповіт, розподіл майна, підроблені папери, шлюб заради маєтка і т.ін) або заборонене кохання. Ми бачимо пригноблену але палку жіночу натуру, яка розкривається у своєму шаленому лібідо тільки за якихось виключних обставин, типу зради або згвалтування. І жодне таке стражденне і палке кохання не закінчується щасливо, наче всім пороблено.
Твір написаний приголомшливо красивою, метафоричною мовою. Він філігранно побудований композиційно. Він викликає захоплення тим стражданням, і жаль, і співчуття, і катарсис.
Але це вже було... Поетизація страждання... Вся українська класична література просякнута тим стражданням. Тут навіть еротизм якійсь стражденний. І ці людські провалля, жадібність, жорсткокість, сліпа помста. І тільки одиниці героїв, які викликають виключно співчуття, зберігають в собі людськість. "Невже у нас так все погано?" - думаєш, читаючи, і сумуєш... Невже батько не здатний повірити улюбленій дочці, що вона чиста, і нещадно б'є її, підкорюючись суспільному осуду, невже брат або хресний батько може забити майже до смерті юного закоханого хлопця, тільки за те, що той не впорався із забороненим коханням? Невже люди і справді такі низькі й жорстокі? А може М. Матіос надто захопилась тим стражданням і нагнітає його, щоб навмисно приголомшити читача, утримати його увагу, адже люди більше люблять негатив?
Ловлю себе на думці, що мені не хочеться читати про безкінечні страждання, нехай навіть це досконало написано.

Коли у 2024-му році читаєш рядочок, написаний у 2006-му «..аби войни не було, або ще якого лиха…», то в голові аж гуде. Це було з Україною і українцями, і це сталося знову💔 Марія Матіос вкотре дивує🙏, як добре вона володіє історичним, культурним контекстом. Скільки етнологічних деталей, скільки психології і знання сутності людських душ, які жили кілька поколінь до нас. Я трохи заздрю їй. Ці знання традицій західноукраїнського села авторці передали у спадок її мама, бабуся, можливо, і прабабуся. Мені цього дуже в житті бракує. Хоч я так само люблю і пишаюся тим, що теж маю гуцульську, покутську кров. Можливо, завдяки цьому, але насамперед завдяки майстерності авторки, читаючи цей роман, я на 100% співпереживаю драмам героїв. Я уявляю і свій рід, який був частиною того ж повоєнного суспільства на початку ХХ століття. І з сумом усвідомлюю, що історія циклічна.

Помилки одних руйнують життя інших.

Часом це обставини.
Часом заздрість.
Часом гаряча кров та егоїзм.

У висновку: страждають усі.
Хтось раніше, а хтось спокутує гріхи «своїх» усе своє життя.

Війна не пройшла повз Тисової Рівні.
Вона нищила усе.
Найбільше-людей. Змінювала їх. Вони - наче звірі. Яких нічого не зупинить.
І ніхто.

Новели викликають дуже різні почуття з не найприємніших. Але в цілому прочитати звісно раджу, таймлайн оповідання, а також стиль поступового розкриття подій і мотивацій персонажів тягне на міні-серіал HBO.

More than a family saga, Hardly, Ever Otherwise is the tale of the same event – a terrible event – that happened to one family, told from different points of view, corresponding to the neighbors and close friends of this particular family. The story takes place in Ukraine, in a small town on the Carpathian Mountains called, Tysova Rivnia, right before the war in 1911. It starts introducing us to the “main” family the novel will follow- the Cheviuk family: Kyrylo, Vasylyna, Pavlo, Dotsia, Andriy, Petrunia, Oksentiy, Dmytryk. The author merely introduces the family dynamics, what women can and cannot say, what they can and cannot do, when suddenly she tells the tale of how Dmytyk, the youngest son, commits the most unforgivable crime and that it is. The downward spiral in his and his brother Pavlo’s life starts.

In the spiral of tragedies, Matios introduces the rest of the town and how they interact with the family. She highlights how easily the people can be corrupted and how the only value that really matters is men’s property, including women. Although it was difficult to read due to the tragedies and helplessness, she has many quotable sentences that can resonate to different villages. I was expecting a family saga and understanding why brothers betray each other, but no. It is a story of how life was during the war. How loyalties only matter as long as love was not in the way. How a person can be killed or disappeared and still his memory will be used against him.

This novel was published recently, Matios does a great job writing about Ukraine of another era. I enjoyed the similarities to Russian Literature where tragedies are just told, with no sugar-coating. They are simply a fact that the family, particularly the women, have to live with. Another similarity is the role honor plays and when sometimes it is not enough and it consumes the best in people. I can’t say I enjoyed the novel or undoubtedly recommend it, but I did appreciate reading it and reading a young Ukrainian author, and it could be a great family saga.

I had read a lot of reviews that noted bad grammar mistakes and spelling errors, but there weren’t as many as I thought there would be. Perhaps my 3 star review comes from the fact that it outdid my very low expectations. I can’t say I’d recommend this book as an enjoyable read, but it was a very fast read and I didn’t hate it. It was just extreeeemely Eastern European. It was dramatic and depressing and blunt without a great overarching storyline. The whole point seemed to be human suffering - specifically when women have sexual desires or act on those desires. If you’re into that, then this may be a good book for you.

Несила була дочитувати історію декількох родин із села де: сусід вбиває сина сусіда, бо той спить з його дружиною, а дружина ненавидить старого свого чоловіка(різниця і віці) бо він не мужчина. Сверкуха ненавидить і заздрить невісткам , бо у них є секс з чоловіком, а її чоловік вже не годен, син пише фейковий заповіт аби відхапати більше землі від братів.
Сумно і сумно, коли нецнотлива дівчини привселюдно зневажається і за це батьки її бють. Життя між війнами, жінка згвалтована москалем і народила дитину. Друг вбиває іншого , бо вчудилася йому примара. Лише питання, поганий син, який напаскудив всім, що з ним?🫤

This book has been translated to English, and I have yet to see how translation holds up, because the writing in this book is impeccable. Despite a grim subject, I devoured this book in 3 hours. The way it describes love, lust and sex is honestly like nothing I have read before.

Content warning: severe physical abuse, r-pe, murder etc etc. I don't think the description of the book reveals anything about it, so for anyone's reference, this book is about villagers of Ukrainian mountains around WW1, and how (in my opinion) disregard for each other's feelings and misogyny snowballs into horrifying tragedies. The timing of the stories is absolutely brilliant, the way the story unravels itself.

Це виявилась для мене на диво цікавою книга, оскільки спочатку я не мав інтересу до подій, але по ходу розвитку сюжету першої істопії а також осмислення двох інших, стає ясно - що це цікаво та інтигуюче, а події вимальовують єдину картину. Хоча з багато чим в книзі я не солідарний, бо маю інший дух та переконання, проте можу впевнено сказати, що це літопис того як жили і подекуди живуть люди! В цілому - ознайомитись з цією сагою варто, бо це про людей, їх життя, переконання та традиції! Бо без цього людина - просто звір, який і проявляється по різному в кожного з персонажів, варто тільки відкинути правила….

Село у відносно свіжому форматі. Деякі місця (загалом мова, стиль написання) мені пахли катеринщиною, але куди ж без цього. Напевно, інакше твір звалився б і не справляв такого враження, а так маємо поєднання, здавалося, типової шкільної літератури та сверблячої багатьом у школі теми. Я не знаю (і не скажу), чим саме мені цей твір зайшов - чи задумкою, чи викладом, чи просто великою кількістю еротичного, - але штука прикольна. О, а як прикольно переказувати події роману і дивитися на обличчя інших!

This book taught me a bit about this time of history for Ukraine. It gives you three points of you about a murder in a isolated village. We were able to see the different point of view and the confronting perspective over that one event. However, I felt the translation might have made the reading more complicated than the original.

Читається на одному дихання, а залишається в думках на дуже довго. Марія Матіос створила такий шедевр, який ��е відпускає до останнього слова. Жорстоко та боляче, але як же красиво це подано. Було відчуття, що знаходишся в Карпатах біля кожного героя, бачиш їхнє життя, переживаєш їхнє кохання, та вмираєш від їхнього болю. І це все в одному флаконі.

Це злочин, що я досі не читала цю неймовірну книжку! Вона в мене пролежала пару років, я боялася розчаруватися після "Солодкої Дарусі". Знаєте, як буває, коли автор написала геніальну книжку і потім всі інші не дотягують? А потім книжка впала за шафу і лиш недавно я її знайшла. Дарма не читала! Книжка просто неймовірна.

Три оповіді про сім'ю. Різні люди, різні долі, які авторка розглядає з різних боків, крутить ними перед очима читача, складає мозаїку зі шматочків. Одна і та ж людина то злочинець, то нещасна в коханні людина. Всіх дуже шкода. Дуже сподобалось.

I (moderately) disliked this book. No, it’s a very good writing, as always with Марія Матіос’s books about Hutsuls and Bukovina. However, I was pretty sick of the people described and the relationships between them, and especially from a heavy accent on their sexual life. I have already noticed these specifics of her books: she repeatedly shows us “the dark side” of the intimate life of people and ties it closely with matters of life and death. In her stories, sex is hardly love or passion; it’s more like a risk, a tool of domination and subjugation, a punishment, a transgression into something forbidden but, at the same time, incredibly routine. There are a lot of beatings there, first of all — when a (beloved) husband beats his (supposedly) unfaithful wife. All this, of course, is very truthful in essence, and I would recommend reading Марія Матіос’s books to those people who have an exclusively romanticized and somewhat “ephemeral” notion about Hutsuls, mostly based on the movie “Тіні забутих предків” (oh how I hate it! but it’s a whole another matter…). Hutsuls were not our Ukrainian elves; they were just people, mostly secluded villagers, with a very dark and rude understanding of what is right and wrong. So I am not complaining about this in general, but it is often quite disgusting and sickening to read about all this. I did not understand why the author is so focused on “the smell of semen” here but this book is kinda “smelling” for me now )). Also, the raping scene (when the woman is suddenly “in love” with her raper and occupant of her land, because her own husband is even worse) is highly disturbing, of course (at the same time, I understand that this may be a totally relatable situation, thought-provoking and difficult but realistic for some people, but it is still highly revolting, especially against the background of all the rapes committed by occupants during our current war).

I am not sure whether this book is indeed “too much” by itself or maybe I just hit “the accumulation effect” after reading the third book by Марія Матіос (I liked the previous two, “Солодка Даруся” and “Нація,” and do not find them much different from this one), but right now, I feel that I do not want this kind of stories anymore or at least in the nearest future (and this is sad, as I already bought her “Букова земля” and “Мами” and initially had the intention to read them soon).

Anyway, I still believe that Марія Матіос is one of our most talented and original writers, a true “live classic,” and the language of her books is incredible (especially in audio format), so I hope to continue with her books some day later.
