Forgotten Gods #6

Acolyte of Truth

Rate this book
Having served Ma'at faithfully for many years, High Priestess Edrice is given a once in a life time opportunity.

All she has to do is take a test. If she succeeds, she'll become a goddess in her own right. If she fails, she will cease to exist in this life and the next.

But with the art of making new deities lost to most of the other gods and goddesses, there are more risks than Menefer wants her to take.

How can Edrice decide between her heart and her destiny? And is there a way she can keep both.

Acolyte of Truth is book 5 in the Forgotten Gods series and follows Edrice and Menefer as they rise through the ranks at Karnak Temple. It is based on Egyptian Mythology.

Acolyte of Truth is fifth book in Laura Greenwoods Forgotten Gods universe.

Edrice and Menefer’s life is always busy, and as one of the High Priestesses for Ma’at and High Priest for Maahes, these two still find time for each other. Their love for one and another is deep, and as per the other books in this universe, this is beautifully told.

The challenges that Edrice encounters in this story are smoothly transitioned and clearly achieved. Plus the detail written about the afterlife (Duat and the Hall of Judgement) was intriguing.

Once again I’ve enjoyed this instalment to the collection of Egyptian mythology inspired books. Whilst each story is a stand-alone, I do think reading them in order helps to fully understand the world created.

Side note: We did read a little about Edrice in Priestess of Truth, and I recommend reading that before Acolyte of Truth.

Acolyte of Truth by Laura Greenwood is a captivating romantic fantasy set in a world inspired by Egyptian mythology. It follows High Priestess Edrice as she prepares for a sacred trial that will determine whether she ascends as a goddess. At her side is Menefer, her fated lion-shifter mate, whose unwavering support adds depth and warmth to their bond.

The story weaves divine magic, spiritual purpose, and romance into a richly imagined setting. Edrice’s journey is filled with emotion, devotion, and a strong sense of destiny, making this an engaging read for fans of mythology, soulmates, and goddess lore.

This was kind of a wild journey watching Edrice ascend to godhood. I loved reading the descriptions of the Egyptian afterlife she had to make her way through, and all her challenges were quite interesting. However, I feel like I was missing something in the romance that anchors this story by not having read the prequel novella. I adored seeing the love and devotion Edrice and Menefer have for one another, but it’s already so well-established that I didn’t think there was any question if their story would work out or not.

This is a fantastic take on Egyptian Afterlife and it’s process. A great read that draws you in from the get go as we follow High Priestess Edrice on her journey. It’s a great addition to this series and is very entertaining and intriguing. I also loved the characters and all of the mythology and have enjoyed all in this series so far.

I was given this ARC for free in exchange for an honest review, but I actually purchased it before I agreed to write the review for Booksprout.

Edrice and Menefer are back! We met them for the first time in the Priestess of Truth by Ms. Greenwood. At this point, Edrice has been a priestess of Ma’at for some time and is now a High Priestess of Ma’at. While she still loves serving the goddess, and is still head over heels in love with Menefer, she is slightly discontent with her life at the temple. Ma’at meets with her and gives her an opportunity to become a goddess. What?!

All right, here’s where Ms. Greenwood educates us about Egyptian gods and what they do/did. Ma’at is the Egyptian goddess of justice. She is one of the key gods when it comes to what occurs when someone is up for judgement. There is a Hall of Judgement, forty-two judges, Osiris, Ma’at and a few others are all there for the great weighing of the heart. Well, for Edrice to become a goddess she has to…you know, die first and be judged. 👀

With as in love as Edrice and Menefer are, this isn’t an easy choice for Edrice. And frankly, Edrice doesn’t just die and become a goddess. She has tests to pass before she’s made a goddess. As I have mentioned in other reviews, I have read almost all of Ms. Greenwood’s Egyptian stories. I love them. I did like this story, but it was a bit slow paced for me. I appreciate the Egyptian education Ms. Greenwood gives us, but the story hinges on the knowledge of how the Hall of Judgement works. I will say that the next book in this series, Empress Of The Dark (Forgotten Gods Book 6), about Nephthys, is releasing in January 2022 and I can't wait!

“Acolyte of Truth“ is the fifth instalment in the “Forgotten Gods” by Laura Greenwood, a paranormal series heavily based on Ancient Egyptian Mythology, and composed of ‘stand alone’ stories, each of them focused on given character, while they all fit together into the “Forgotten Gods” verse. “Acolyte of Truth” focuses on Edrice & Menefet’s, High Priestess of Ma’at and High Priest of Maahes respectively, who despite their high performance lives still find the time to focus on their own relationship, and share a profound love for another.

Along the romantic tale, Greenwood successes in bring Ancient Egyptian Mythology tropes to the general public: the scenes regarding the Egyptian afterlife (Duat) and the Hall of Judgement stand out, adding some depth to the generic paranormal story. As always Laura Greenwood imbues the Ancient Egyptian Gods with a character and personality of their own. At about 91 pages, the story might be one of the shortest in the series, but is still filled with meaning. A great addiction to the “Forgotten Gods” series! Because let us be real, making the Ancient Egyptian world come alive in a paranormal setting is a feat that Greenwood achieves effortlessly.

I received an ARC from the author and though not required to post a review I wanted to offer my honest, voluntary impression upon finishing the book.

This was an interesting book about a young high priestess Edrice who is chosen by the goddess she serves to have the opportunity to become a goddess herself and sit in the Hall of Judgement as a judge because she can sense when someone is truthful or not.

Her choice is not without risks for if she fails, she not only won’t be returning to the land of the living but will never be allowed in Duat ( the afterlife) either and will cease to exist! She feels she must take this challenge regardless of the risks and this story tells of her experience.

I really enjoyed this concept of the afterlife and of the good person Edrice is which her goddess Ma ‘at saw as well which was why this offer was made to her.

Laura has written a whole series on forgotten gods of Egypt and their mythology which I encourage you to check out after you finish this book for I think you’ll enjoy this book as much as I have!

I happily recommend this book as one those interested in Egyptian mythology and those looking for a short book on what the adventure into the afterlife might be like because one day we’ll all have to take our own journey there!

ACOLYTE OF TRUTH is the sixth  installment in the Forgotten Gods series by Laura Greenwood. Ms Greenwood has created a world where the Egyptian Empire didn't end but continued to grow. This story takes place in Karnak, Egypt at the Temple of Ma'at.

High Priestess Edrice has decided to become a goddess to be with Menefer. But first, she must take a test.  Success will have her  becoming an immortal Goddess.  Failure means ceasing to exist in this life and the afterlife. Never to be with Menefer.

The trials of becoming a Goddess. Can she survive her death and her road to the afterlife?  Will she decide to stay with her parents in their idyllic life or return to the world of the living and her new life as a Goddess with Menefer?

These stories are short reads that are part of a series but can easily be read as a standalone. I received a complimentary Advanced Reader copy of this book, and this is my freely given and honest review.

Our heroine has an opportunity like no other, but the risks are very high. Is the reward worth risking her life, and love, for?

This is book five in the series. It works just fine as a standalone.

This is a fantasy romance story set in the time of Egyptian gods. The story is well written and easy to read, with a straightforward plot that still manages to have some unexpected twists to it. The characters are well developed and I found our heroine's dilemma made for a very engaging story. I really enjoyed the Egyptian mythology elements of the story and now want to go back and read the other books in this series to pick up more of that. Overall, a very enjoyable read.

Highly recommended.

Climbing the corporate ladder has never had so many questions attached
Edrice has so many choices to make in a short period.
*Does she want to become a goddess? Is now the time? Is becoming one in order to be a judge an appropriate reason?
*How will she handle visiting Duat? Will she even make it there (and back)? Will she want to stay with her parents? How would she tell her parents she’s returning if they ask her to stay?
*Does Menefer get a voice in her decision? If so, how much? If not, what would that do to their relationship?

This book delves into some IRL issues.

The author provides a link for more information on the board game “Senet”.

Next is ‘Empress of the Dark’ then many others by this author.

Succeed or die!

Edrice has served as a High Priestess to Ma’at for many years. As a demigoddess, Edrice has the power to sense when people are lying. For this reason, among others, Ma’at encourages her to take the test to become a god. Menefer wants to be supportive but he doesn’t want to lose her either. If she fails the test she will cease to exist but if she succeeds she will be a goddess. It is a difficult decision.

I enjoyed this stand-alone story about Edrice and her test to become a goddess. This series is fiction but I like the way it incorporates the history of the Egyptian gods. I always enjoy the books in this series. I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

I enjoyed reading about Edrice's journey to Duat as she strives to become a full goddess. The romance was already established in the prequel story, but it was still sweet to see their interactions. I'm eager to see what else happens in this series. The next promised character is one I'm especially eager to find out what happens.

I'd say that this series mostly works with each book as a standalone, but there is an overarching plotline that will probably make the reading order become more important as the series approaches the end.

Tristan has been madly flirting with Edwin Bickle for a year now and today is his last chance, so a slipped message as the barista passes his customer his coffee cup. Sweet , cute , romantic . Edwin has secrets though ,his age he said he was is out by quite a few years, he’s a witch and in an authoritarian position in the breach of protocols. But when Edwin calls Tristan they have their devilishly wicked night together. Slowly the guards come down and Edwin sees Tristan as a lover he can trust..Great forethought with the writing , good strong characters and backgrounds. An immersive experience and compelling read

Edrice is the High Priestess of Ma’at, she has been invited to become a goddess and join the 42 judges but she has to die first and go to Duat and return to Karnak. Menefer her lover doesn’t want her to attempt this because she may not come back. This book gave you more insight into the gods and goddesses. It was an interesting story and kept me turning the pages to see if she made it or not. I would recommend this book.

I read this in a boxset and found this story an emotional tough one. It deals with conviction and trials. A personal struggle and decision making. Where all these forgotten Egyptian gods stories are based on fiction, each novel carries a significant moral or lesson. This story focuses on High Priestess of Ma’at, Edrice & her love Menefer, High Priest of Horus. She goes through the trial to become a goddess of truth (ultimate lie detector). Beautifully written.

Great read, full of interesting characters. Some we already know and some that will become more introduced to us as the series continues. A missing judge leads to a human to demi-goddess being invited to take the trials to become a goddess and become a judge. First, she must pass the trials tho.

I enjoyed watching the adventure of the trials and what it entailed, who we saw and things we also learned. Another great installment for sure!.

Edrice's journey to Duat and back to become a goddess is told in this book. This one was quite different from the others in the series, because she had already found her partner, Menefer, in the short story Priestess of Truth, and Menefer didn't have a huge presence in the story. It was interesting to see the was Laura Greenwood depicted the afterlife / Duat, but I felt this lacked the same sense of excitement that the other books had. I will still continue with the series, but this was not my favorite. I read this on Kobo Plus.

A story of faith (of different kinds)

This part of the continuing journey of Edrice is a fascinating tale as it illustrates the journey described in the tombs & texts (though, obviously, with literary licence required for the stages that weren't actually documented by the original Egyptians!).

I also enjoyed the interplay between the characters, not just from Edrice but also Menefer, Ma'at, Kebechet, Ammit, and all the rest.

(I was fortunate to receive an ARC however the above is, as ever, my own opinion.)

This is a short and fascinating read that I couldn't put down. This book in the Forgotten Gods series is about Edrice, formally demigoddess and High Priestess of Ma'at, and her journey to becoming a full goddess. I though this character was wonderfully written, and her actions/ reactions were very realistic. Her relationship with the other gods and goddesses is also very engaging, but her romance with Menefer was what I enjoyed most. Sweet and clean romance and a happy ending left me wanting more. I loved this book.

In Acolyte of Truth, Laura Greenwood sweeps us into the shimmering halls of Egyptian myth, where mortal doubts meet divine destiny. High Priestess Edrice’s path to godhood isn’t just celestial—it’s intimate, vulnerable, and laced with the kind of soul-searching that feels both timeless and achingly human. Add in a tender thread of romance with Menefer, and you’ve got a story that balances cosmic judgment with heart-fluttering sweetness. Elegant, evocative, and just a little bit addictive—I’m officially devoted.

Wonderful story!
Edrice was first mentioned in Priestess of Truth.
That was the story of her encounter with Menefer, and the start of their story.

This one is mostly Edrice’s story and her journey to become a godess.
Both Edrice and Menefer are wonderful characters, and their story has enough twists and suspance to really enjoy reading it!

Laura Greenwood never stops surprising me. Aside from her vampire related series' this has easily won top spot as my favorite.
It's a truly beautiful take on the Egyptian Afterlife process. Complete with overcoming your fears. Edrice's journey is so beautifully written that you feel as if you're right beside her.
I whole heartedly recommend this book. Go and take the journey, you won't be disappointed.

An unique take on the Egyptian afterlife and how to get it. Edrice is the high priestess who is given a test. If she passes, she will become a goddess and if she fails, she will cease to exist period. That is a lot of pressure. Edrice has a romance with Menefer who is a high priest. You will get lost in all the splendor of ancient Egypt and the way of life.

Edrice has not been a High Priestess for long but with the ability to tell if someone is lying she has become bored with her position. When Ma'at calls for Edrice, she is offered the opportunity of a lifetime. This imaginary world is just as compelling as other books in the series, plus it has romance and ends on a happy note. Highly recommended.

This was an interesting story about the Egyptian Afterlife. I love mythology and this was a great story. It centers around High Priestess Edice. She doing her job but is given an opportunity that she has to decide to take. If it works it will be wonderful but if not it will be very wrong for her! What will she do?

I'm not a really big fan of mythology reads but I love Laura Greenwood so I thought I would try it out. It was a pretty interesting read and had a lot of mythological themes to it. Already a fan of Greenwood's work, I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the Egyptian lore-based series. While it can be read as a standalone if you have some awareness of Egyptian mythology, these books are definitely best enjoyed in series. Adequately written and filled with Greenwood's quintessential creativity. Can't wait for the next book!

Acolyte of Truth is Edrice's story and book five of the Forgotten Gods series. When Edrice a High Priestess gets a chance to take a test and become a Goddess she has to decide if it's worth it to try or not. This is a quick, well written story and is based on Egyptian mythology. As always this author has piqued my interest in mythology and I have really enjoyed reading this series. I can't wait to read the next book in the Forgotten Gods series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
