Alice is the alpha of her pack, and despite being a woman, everyone looks up to her. She's cold and strict and doesn't let anyone take advantage of her.
But a softer side of her is revealed when a revenge raid on a group of humans reveals someone she just can't get out of her head. Against the pack's wishes, she takes the man as a pet of hers and keeps him safe from the rest.
But now Alice is falling for a human, something forbidden by her pack and those around her. She'll have to decide if love is worth the risk of losing everything she's worked for, or if the pack is the ultimate prize.
Maria Warren is a brand new author to me and I really liked this book that sucked me in right from the get go. This was a well written story and the characters had depth and kept my attention throughout the book. It is a nice change to read a story with a female alpha falling for a human while protecting her pack.
I loved this story! The wolves are more wilder and in tune with their instincts, prefering to live predominantly in wolf form, which are just the kind of werewolves I love. There were plenty of twists and turns throughout the story and each character was distinct, with their own way of handling situations and problem solving. Highly recommend if you're looking for a Werewolf story with a difference.
This story gives the reader a kick-ass female lead to be proud of, a sexy leading man who is more than he appears to be and drama for days. The poly relationship was a fun twist and the good guys prevailed! Definitely one of my favorite stories for 2021.
I really enjoyed reading this book and would like to read the other books in the series. I would like to read other books by this author. I would recommend it to anyone to read
This is not an easy review for me to write because, although I appreciate getting a free copy of the book, I was not too impressed with it. My feelings about the book raised and lowered like a yo-yo.
This review may contain slight spoilers but I will try not to give any major plot lines away.
I started out very intrigued by the story plot and by the fact that the alpha of the pack was a female; however I very shortly got a bit squeamish and grossed out when it was revealed that these werewolves ate the humans they killed. Yuck!
Another problem I had with the story is that it feels like you are dropped into the middle of a world with absolutely no world building included to help navigate or understand the world. This leaves many unanswered questions. Do humans as a whole know about shifters? Do all shifters see humans as prey and eat them? Why do these shifters have multiple magical powers not usually included in shifter stories and is this normal in this world? Is there any technology or cites or is this a more underdeveloped world with only a few human settlements? You don't know any of the answers to these questions and you won't find out by reading the story.
The werewolves in this story seem like a mix of shifters and mages as they can control elements (some shifters have more affinity with some elements over others), their clothes magically disappear and reappear before and after a shift, the alpha female can send electricity through metal, and the metal also seems to obey her and can be used a s a weapon and none of this is explained in even minor detail.
The female alpha falls into almost instalove/lust with Justa, the male human pet she decides to keep. Justa himself seems to swing between being calm and unafraid to nervous and edgy. One minute he is "you have to let me go, don't touch me" and the next he is initiating sex (after acting like he was afraid she was going to either rape or eat him...and not in the good way). Because everything is from Alice's viewpoint there is no explanation of his sudden change of heart. He is the more dominant sex partner and the sex carries on for about 3 chapters and he still seems to vacillate between wanting to stay with Alice or going back to a human settlement.
These problems in the story almost had me giving up on the story when I was only half done; however after being given the book I knew I needed to finish it. I did find the second half of the book more interesting despite it introducing more unanswered questions. Before the second half of the book I was only planning on giving book one star.
There are several grammatical errors that caused me to reread the sentence to decipher the meaning but they are not too numerous.
Overall this was just not my cup of tea and I doubt I will read any other books, if there are any, by this author.
This is the first time I am reading Maria Warren. I enjoy how she made the alpha a woman and she has to take on what is forbidden when she starts to fall for the pet-human that she has acquired from the last raid on the humans. It is a forbidden love and goes against everything she knows. Will she be able to take on the pack and let them know she will keep her pet and love him no matter what? Or will she let the pet go or kill the pet? Grab this and check out what it is all about. A great read for sure. Unusual so made me keep reading it to see the outcome.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Alpha’s Pet fooled me into believing I would read another werewolf story. Don’t get me wrong, I love them. Big bad alphas and virgin abused mates and all. But this book came to break free from most werewolf tropes and shine a new light on the genre. I rarely add spoilers to my reviews, but I can’t fail to mention what makes this book unique. For starters, the female lead is the alpha, and her male partner is the pet. Or is it? The fight for dominance between Alice and Justa is one of the few I’ve seen on online novels, and even fewer on werewolf stories. That alone is enough reason to read the book, but Maria goes further. Every time I thought I had the book figured out, she went ahead and shattered my predictions. A dominant female calls for a submissive male, right? Wrong. A mate is found, so she’ll have to leave her former lover, right? Wrong again. She’s in dire straits, but her inner strength will help her pull through? Nope. The plot twists and unexpected paths got me so curious, I could hardly put the book down. Now, this book might shake your preconceptions of the genre, but it will be a short ride. Less than thirty chapters long, Alpha’s Pet ended up lacking a few explanations along the way. The plot is solid, but in shorter stories that sometimes means characters don’t form full arcs. Only the female lead goes through a change of heart, and it was a bit too fast to follow. In sum, this is an amazing book for those of you looking for a werewolf novel with a twist, but it would probably benefit from a couple extra chapters to allow for a more fluid ending. That being said, I wouldn’t mind having a man like Justa cooking a hot meal for me.
Read several short stories from this author, what I like best is her ability to write paranormal stories that go beyond normal.
In this you get a female alpha that can't be cowed, one human being who can't be cowed either. Since this is a love story ,of course drama and ymse obstacles before we get a happy ending. Or something that might be similar to that
Most of her works can be found on e-platforms such as Dreame and GoodNovel,my absolute favorite is Fate's Pawn.
So if you like to read paranormal books that are not traditional, then test out her stories
I struggled to finish this book, but I think some of that is my own fault for expecting more from a book with this title. I still gave it 3 stars, as it was grammatically okay, even if I didn't enjoy the writing. It is a shifter story, with a different twist of a female alpha. This was then somewhat ruined by her being excessively emotional and then seeming to overcompensate for it. She hates humans, but takes one for a "pet", and then they have a weird sexual dominance flip-flopping. This was just a bit over the top and too much emotional whiplash for me.
A female alpha dealing with a rebellious pack has enough trouble on her paws without crossing any forbidden boundaries but she goes ahead. And those crossed lines make for a great read. Forget tried and true; life on the wild side just got very interesting!
A great book. The story flows well, the characters are likeable and have great chemistry. This is a new author for me and I will be on the lookout for more to read. The story kept me interested.
I love Maria Warren’s stories. Her shifter stories don’t follow the usual guidelines and it never disappoints. A female Alpha protecting her pack and finding her own happiness against all that gets in the way. You will love the book!!
Shifters with abilities above and beyond the usual fare. Love between different species. A better outlook on relationships between shifters and humans. An enjoyable read.
In the beginning it was just .....a book with words....monotone,then the surprises started and they didn't stop till the end and thank God i continued reading i would have missed an interesting read.
Really enjoyed reading this book. Loved how everything turns out and problems get solved. Funny how it all comes together and they find a happy ever after. Highly recommend reading.
