Wow. This has been the best book on investing I've ever read, and it only took me a couple of hours to get through it. I've been trying to figure out the perfect asset allocation for retirement for so long, and this book just changed the game for me. I feel like the "Simple Path to Wealth" was the pre-cursor to what is now my favorite no-hassle allocation that will supercharge returns. Cheers!
The tips outlined in this book are foundational, but I wouldn't start with this one if you're just getting into personal finance. Start with saving, paying down debt, and beginning to invest. Once you're started on your investing journey, then pick up this book. As a follower of the Financial Independence movement and a 20-something early in my career, I was previously keeping my investments simple and 100% in a total stock market index fund. The 2-fund approach laid out in the book has me rethinking how to incorporate long-term upside potential for only a marginal increase in risk.
As someone who was never taught about investing, this book really laid it out in simple terms for the most part. On the same note of inexperience, it was still overwhelming to know what the first step is, where to go. More so, being 40 and inexperienced, I am apprehensive about being too risky in something I don't fulltime educated in. But I believe this book is a great start and we simply must take another step and do more work to get it going.
The authors of this book Paul Merriman and Richard Buck are big contributors to the Boggle Head community and this book is an easy to read jem that taught me (someone who reads over a dozen financial books a year) quite a bit.
There are three big gems I want to specifically mention 1) the 12 simple ways are simple, understandable, and have monetary facts to back them up that will blow your mind.
2) The book has a simplified two-fund portfolio (with options) which really consists of a Target date fund (make sure it is based on an index fund) and a small cap value index fund. Brilliant and so simple for those who don't want to try to manage their "Ultimate Buy and Hold" fund set up and it returns really similar results. This is great for someone starting or someone who just wants a set-it-and-forget-it plan.
Their alternatives to this... like making your own target date fund using Fidelities Zero funds were awesome... as well as the fund choice for young investors - brilliant.
3) The list of good reliable resources and the index of terms at the back of the book is great
Boggle Heads are named after John Bogle the guy who came up with Index funds with Vanguard. Before Bogle, you had to be rich and have an in for the most part to invest. Bogle essentially changed the financial futures for the everyday man... if you know the basics which are easy (Discount brokers like Vanguard, Fidelity, Index funds... and a few other things).

This is a helpful and very practical guide to investing that will all but guarantee you retire with plenty. While I will likely personally use the "four fund" approach Merriman discusses on his website and elsewhere (I first came across him in a podcast interview), this book focuses on his simpler "two fund" approach that is likely the best fit for the majority of people. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to be a good steward of their resources over the long term. The audiobook is free to listen to at paulmerriman.com.
There were a few big editing mistakes and then later in the book a few numbers didn't seem to add up in a chart. I'm not 100% sure they were wrong but given the previous errors I'm inclined to think the table was wrong.
Most of the content is very simple and clear then the chapter called "Unique Cases" suddenly got into super complex ideas.
Overall really good advice and a good starting place for financial newbies.
I’ve liked the writing style of the writer which is precise and informative. The 12 step were super useful. The rest of the book is pointing the reader to the two fund investment (retirement fund and value stocks) which was not suitable with me. Only one take, that I expected more comparison against other famous indexes like NASDAQ, Emerging markets and so on but it was kind of pointing to only one direction which is not quite divested.
A great book that offers a level and clear eye look at long term successful investing. There are ways offered which to grow ones wealth over time with solid advice and away from frenzied day trading.
It's a decent intro to investing book. Most of it I already knew, but I did learn a couple of things.
Mainly I was looking for their allocation recommendations, which I didn't really need to whole book for, but it's always good to have a reminder of how to handle my money.
I loved how specific this book is. They develop a case for their approach and even give some specific fund names that fit. I am not going to adopt the approach. I would have loved this when first setting up my 401k though.
This is a good starting book for people who want to manage their own retirement. It sets clear asset classes to pick for building a diversified portfolio.
Short and sweet guide and on how to start saving/investing. I knew most of this stuff already but it was great explanation of core investing principles. Also now very bullish on small cap value.
I could summarize this 176 page book in one sentence: invest 90% of your retirement account in a target date index fund and 10% in a small cap value fund.
As a personal finance geek, relocating to the U.S. meant I had to relearn a lot, especially regarding 401(k)s, IRAs, and similar accounts. I discovered Paul Merriman through my favorite podcast, and I'm glad I read his book. It will set me on the right path for funding my 401(k) and Roth IRA. Although I feel a bit behind in saving for retirement, these simple steps give me hope that I can catch up and reduce my anxiety about this aspect of my financial planning.
Great read for those who are seasoned investors looking to try to improve their portfolios for the long run. I love the down to earth language and the practical application of decades of work from Paul and Rich. This is a gift for the average investor!
