Cool Factoids about Hard Times

I love trivia, and so I have enjoyed a number of this author's books. This book focuses on the two world wars that took place in the 20th century. It looks at broader historical facts as well as cultural minutiae. As an RN, I particularly enjoyed the medical trivia. For instance, did you know that the idea of surgeons wearing blue scrubs started in World War I? Or that the concept of medical triage, common in ERs and during mass tragedies, was also first used in that war? The only thing I don't like about Scott Matthews’ trivia books is that the author doesn't even attempt to categorize the facts. For instance, in this book, since there are two distinct topics, he essentially just states “250 facts” at the start of each section. That is my only complaint about this book, though. The information was fascinating.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

One of my students gave me this book because I teach a unit on WWI to my class. I already knew most of the facts in the books, but it might be okay for my students during our unit. However, I would caution against believing everything you read in this book. There were a few inaccurate or poorly written facts (such as incorrectly stating that the President of the United States during WWII was Theodore Roosevelt, claiming that Denmark saved it “entire” Jewish population from the Nazis, and stating that there was a Russian and Soviet army during the war). There were also a few typos and grammatically poor sentences throughout the book, and I do wish the facts were organized into categories instead of numbered 1-250. It also felt like a few of the pictures were misplaced between the WWI and WWII section. The author could have done a better job researching and communicating the facts, and hiring an editor and publisher.
