Guojing (Jing Guo) is an illustrator and concept artist. Previously she worked in the game and animation industry. She is now a professional illustrator. Her wordless picture book, ‘The Only Child’, a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book of 2015, and a Publishers Weekly Book of 2015, is published by Schwartz and Wade (Random House, Dec, 2015). The story is based on her own experiences as a child. Guojing is also planning her next picture book. She also likes to paint in oils in her spare time. She loves to share her ideas and feelings through her art work.
Stormy is a must-read for any dog lover. We picked this up because we read the author's other book The Only Child which quickly became one of our favorites.
Stormy is a wordless picture book with stunning illustrations. You can expect the same colorful, eye-catching artwork from the cover throughout the entire book. The story is about a little dog who appears to be lost and homeless. He's very fearful and unsure of human contact. A girl who runs into him at a park takes interest and tries to coax him with a ball, but to no avail. After a few days of persistence, the little dog finally follows her home and a rainstorm develops. What will happen to this poor little dog? Will the girl ever see him again?
This book is beautifully illustrated and kept our interest from front to back. It never ceases to amaze me how an author can craft a story with no words--one so powerful that has such an emotional effect on people. The kids and I had a lot of emotion reading it and after discussing it, we ended up reading it multiple times again. This book deals with trust, fear, loneliness, love, perseverance, and kindness. It may be recommended for ages 3-7, but it's truly a book for all dog lovers of any age.
We enjoy wordless picture books and this is definitely one we'll keep. Highly recommend! We'll always be on the lookout for more books by Guojing.
Such a lovely book! All my goodreads friends who have read this have rated it 4 or 5 stars, I suggested our library buys this book and they did. I'm so glad because this is a lovely story about friendship, trust, caring for others, finding a home and being lost and then found.
This is a beautifully illustrated story without text that will have you calling out to the woman, 'look behind you, go back!'
A touching story with wonderful illustrations and a heartwarming ending!
Oh, I want a dog! This might be the most touching wordless picture book I’ve ever read. Even the youngest viewer can understand the story. Very, very sweet, and gentle except I did worry about the dog in traffic at one point. Otherwise just adorable and endearing. I laughed at the last perfect page. For some reason no part of the story depressed me, probably because I knew there would a happy ending. The illustrations are gorgeous and charming. Great book for dog lovers, for teaching about love and patience and empathy.
Stormy should warm even the coldest heart. Dog lovers are going to be hit particularly hard by this one, though. It's hard not to love this sweet story about a lonely little dog and a girl who has a lot of love to give.
Like The Only Child (which I read earlier this year), Stormy is told entirely without words. Guojing's illustrations are such that no words are necessary. The story unfolds at a natural pace, and the illustrated panels show the hesitant development of a relationship. The little dog is skittish and won't let anyone come near. But the girl is persistent. She brings a ball to the park and tries to engage the dog in a game of fetch. It doesn't exactly work, and the girl has to leave yet again. One night, the dog follows her home and gets caught in a storm. She doesn't realize this, and goes looking for it at the park. Will their paths cross? (I'm sure you can guess the answer, based on the book's subtitle. Still, watching the two grow closer is delightful to watch.)
The pictures are breathtaking. The little dog is charming, and Guojing has perfectly captured its emotions in the soft-looking illustrations. Unlike the pictures in The Only Child, these ones are in full colour. I had a hard time choosing which one I wanted to include in my review; there are so many beautiful ones that highlight this relationship of patience, perseverance, and love.
It's amazing how so much emotion and story can be conveyed without any words at all. I can't wait to see what Guojing does next.
Girl and dog establish a loving bond. The story is told through beautiful illustrations that convey emotion, softness, gentleness and eventually, trust.
Having absolutely loved Chinese illustrator Guojing's picture-book debut - that marvelously magical wordless story, The Only Child - I picked up this second venture into the form with a great deal of anticipation. It didn't hurt that the cover image was so adorable, or that the sub-title hinted at a poignant tale of a homeless animal finding a home (always a sure thing, when it comes to tugging at my heartstrings). Happily, my anticipation was not in vain, and I found Stormy: A Story About Finding a Forever Home a delightfully engaging and heartwarming book.
The wordless narrative here follows the story of a homeless dog, living under a bench in a park, who is befriended by the woman who likes to sit on that bench. Slowly winning his trust, with the help of a baseball, some play, and plenty of affection, the woman visits the park and the dog often, until one day he follows her home, sitting outside of her apartment building in the rain. Happily, the woman can't stand the idea of her new friend getting wet, and the eponymous "forever home" is made a reality...
Guojing's beautiful and immensely expressive artwork is more than enough the carry the story here, and the reader/peruser will have no difficulty in following along. I had to choke back some sniffles while reading this one, and finished it with a cozy feeling of happiness. Highly recommended, to fellow Guojing fans, to readers who enjoy wordless picture-books, and to anyone seeking children's stories about caring for homeless and stray animals.
Just, awwww! Melt your heart awwww! If you love animals, just read it! It is beautifully done, utterly heartwarming, and perfectly captures the incredible connection that humans and animals can experience if we open our hearts to them. The parts where the lady is trying to win the dog's trust really moved me as I had many experiences like that when I volunteered at a cat sanctuary as it was my job to help calm and win over the new arrivals who were often so frightened and reluctant to trust. Five stars all the way!
Oh, Stormy! What happened? Did someone abandon you? Did you get lost? You look so all alone.
The clouds are getting darker, there's a storm coming. What about that nice lady who sits and reads on your bench each day? She threw a ball to you the last time she was there. Maybe you can find her, Stormy. Maybe.
Hold on to hope, Stormy. Sniff, sob.
Gosh, I love a great wordless book. Just illustrate the heck out of a story and I'm more than happy. Everything works here. Everything. Even the texture of the dog's fur (wet vs. dry) is vivid. No words, nothing to explain the tale. Just a homeless fluffbucket and a woman who reads books on a park bench. The artist, Guojing, has made me a fan.
A woman with the patience of a saint and a heart of gold helps Stormy find his/hers furever home. You don't need to be a dog person to enjoy this one. Anyone with a furry friend will love this story that melts and breaks your heart at the same time. Being its wordless, all ages will be able to read it on their own.
It seems rather strange to mark this book as 'read' when there is not a single word in it.
You 'read' Stormy in the exquisite pictures which tell of a shy pup being wooed by a loving and perhaps equally shy woman. Theirs is a special friendship, a romance almost. Even if you aren't a dog lover (and generally I'm not) this is bound to touch your heart.
It would be twice as good to share with a young dog-lover!
There are quite a few picture books about pets finding their forever home, which is just such a pure and wholesome joy. Guaranteed happy ending and unconditional love is a great combo. This book is wordless and just gorgeous.
Prepare for all heart-strings to be fully plucked. Stormy is a wordless picturebook which follows a young pup, distrustful of humans. Having set up residence from its previous life within a park, Stormy is spotted by a solitary woman who spends much of the book trying to earn the dog's trust. Over several pages, perfectly paced by Guojing through the use of full-page spreads and slight panels, we watch as their relationship gradually grows. Only when a violent storm falls does the tale reach its climax.
Dedicated to her own missing dog, Guojing clearly wrote this as a way of healing and she manages it beautifully. It might not have the subtle nuance of Small in the City but it doesn't matter. This is a book for everyone and that last page will warm the coldest heart.
I absolutely loved this book, but be sure to have a box of tissues handy! This wordless picture book uses gorgeous artwork and the story of a homeless dog and a woman with a kind heart to yank on heart strings. Anyone that's ever taken in a stray pet, will definitely be able to relate to this book. It can also start a conversation about helping our neighbors and those in need.
Enchanting, heartwarming and one of the most beautifully illustrated books I've ever read. The story is fairly simple, but the illustrations elevate it another level altogether!
Another fabulous wordless picture book. This emotional story of a stray dog putting his trust into a young girl to find a loving home, really tugs on the heart strings. I love the way this story was written by the author because he’d lost his dog, it could be portraying the hope in which he feels regarding what might have happened to his dog whereby someone has been kind enough to look after him after becoming lost. A lovely book.
This book was not meant to please children but to devastate parents. What a sad, beautiful story about rescue pets. Rude to make me cry this much while not writing a single word.
