Case solved? Yes but... The Nicolette Percy case was a nightmare. She solved it, but the solution generated more questions than answers. Captain Kate Gazzara, suspended from duty and in danger of losing her job, is determined to find the answers and embarks on a one woman investigation deep into the heart of Appalachia. Blair C. Howard is a Royal Air Force veteran, a retired journalist, and the best-selling author of more than 50 novels, including the international best-selling Harry Starke series, and 23 travel books. In 2021, having been fascinated by the heavens almost from childhood, and a SciFi fan for almost as long, he decided to try his hand at writing a military space opera. His first journey into this genre resulted in the Sovereign Stars series. Book 1 in the series, Avenger was quickly followed by Gods of War and Armored Fleet.
Blair lives in East Tennessee with his wife Jo, and Jack Russell Terrier, Sally.
I started reading some of the other reviews because I wondered what other people had thought of this new book that Mr. Howard has written for us to enjoy. I was really happy to see that I was not alone in my opinion of this book. I absolutely adore Harry Stark and Kate Gazarra two of the series that Mr. Blair writes. This particular book centers around Kate. Kate is a detective and the Captain of her team at the Chattanooga Police Department. I have read most of the books about Kate or listened to them. By the way if you haven't listened to an audiobook you really should. They are absolutely amazing at bringing the books to life as you listen to the reader it feels like you are listening to Kate telling you about a case that she is trying to solve. Anyway Kate is a beautiful woman with an incredible figure that men are drawn to. She also doesn't take nonsense from anyone. She is a really great lead character. Kate has decided that since she has been suspended and forced to talk to a shrink, she is going to take matters into her own hands when she is accused of harassing a prisoner. She secretly goes to the mountains that surround a pretty little town called Loeb. The characters there are somewhat like what you would find in small towns. People are open and friendly, you can get great food and coffee at the little diner and the local bar is a hangout for all kinds. But there is something different about Loeb, even though some people are quite willing to talk to Kate there are others that tell her to mind her own business and to go back to where she came from. It is this attitude that draws Kate more to Loeb. Why do they want her to leave? Is there something they don't want her to know? Mr. Howard has written another suspenseful book that pulls you right in. I hope that these 2 series just keep coming because every story just gets better! I received a free download of this book from the publisher. This doesn't influence my review whatsoever, this review is for a book that I totally enjoyed and wanted to share my own honest opinion.
“PAGE TURNER!” A great read, no a brilliant read as usual as with all of Blair’s books. Each one just gets better and better and better still. The story is about Lt Kate Gazzara obviously who is a captain of the Chattanooga Police Department who is a feisty independent impulsive person who takes no for an answer and does things her own way which sometimes boarder line with her bosses. This story mostly revolves around Kate alone and starts with her being suspended and once again being persecuted by Internal Affairs which is nothing new, but to cap it all she is also being made to apologize publicly; see a shrink and take leave or hand in her gun and badge all because of a false complaint of bullying a prisoner, well only slightly. With things not adding up and Kate being Kate she isn’t going to let sleeping dogs lie and despite possibly losing her job she goes out on her own to get justice for the murder and incest of her victim no matter what it takes. This leads her to their home town a place called “Loeb” where the brother and sister team came from and where the township still fear and are afraid to talk about their family that terrorized and run the town with a iron fist, several disappearances and what appears to be everyone including the police in their pockets. Even now things aren’t what they seem after so many years and many fear the old man who died all those years ago so why? Kate finds many won’t talk to her and a few warn her to leave well alone and with few allies other than an ex con called Felix she befriends Kate eventually gets to the truth and also gets justice. A tight enthralling thriller for sure.
I just can’t read books in one go like I used to now due to eyesight issues but I had to get to the ending with “Catherine” and just kept turning the pages regardless. Damn you Blair you’ve done it again with an absorbing brilliant written thriller! A “Must read and I recommend you read it now!”
Catherine, aka Captain Kate Gazzara is the MC in Blair Howard's latest great Lt Kate Gazzara novel, the self-titled Catherine.
'Hauled over the coals' by Chief Wesley Johnston, (about her alleged handling of her current case, Kate's forced into suspension and therapy, in order to keep her job.
Why does Kate go to Loeb and what does she find? How do locals respond to her 'research'? What does she learn about the Lawson family?
I really loved the way Blair Howard has developed Kate into someone whom I can not only relate to, but feel that I'm right beside, in every dramatic nail-bitingly tense moment. The night visit to the junkyard and the cabin in the woods, had me holding my breath without realising it, until Kate was 'safely', back at her motel room.
The great secondary characters, Felix, Doc the mortician, Will, Kate's lover, Jack and Janet, Kate's loyal team and even Chief Wesley her boss, are Blair Howard's triumph too - with their heart-warming relationships, realistic, annoying at times actions and much more - during Kate's suspension.
In fact my only gripe is the rather abbreviated ending, where nobody in Loeb seems to be punished or investigated properly, (unless it happens behind the scenes) and the revelation that 'bad boy biker' Felix, suddenly found God strongly enough to become a minister, in the town he'd led police to, (for them to investigate the new evidence in the 'cold case' murders of two locals).
Another Blair Howard winner for sure - get your copy of Catherine today... satisfaction guaranteed!
In this episode, Captain Kate Gazzara is suspended, required to undergo psychiatric therapy and threatened with termination, due to discrepancies in the account of a murder given by the alleged perp vs. the account reported by the investigating detectives. The review being handled by Internal Affairs is impacted by a mean woman who is jealous of Kate’s rapid rise to Captain, and who would love to see Kate fired. She does her worst to put pressure on Kate and on her individual team members, to identify the slightest faux pax to use against them. Ever driven by the desire to get things right, Kate takes a chance of jeopardizing her job, using her suspension time to go digging, on her own, to find out what is really behind the crime. The story is well-written, with many twists and turns, imminent danger to Kate and lots of action, which made it hard to put down. I am a dedicated fan of Mr. Howard’s writing, and cannot wait to read more of his work. My first exposure to Mr. Howard’s writing was “Alexandra”, book 11 in this series, which he sent to me through his email group. I got hooked and joined his ARC team, next reading “Cameron”, book 12. I thoroughly enjoyed both books and have now read another five; looking forward to reading every one of his books. When he offered an ARC of the boxset for books 10 through 12, I accepted it and immediately read “Catherine”, book 10, so I could review the full set. This review is my honest opinion.
This story starts out a different way than you would expect. Kate has just been notified that she is being investigated by Internal Affairs and she is being placed on suspension pending review. As a condition of her suspension, she has to issue a statement to the press, see a shrink and turn in her badge.
Kate after talking with the shrink, who suggested she go away for awhile, decides to go to Loeb to find out more about the family that lodged the complaint against her. Once she arrived in town, she used identifying herself as a writer looking for information on the Lawson family. As she looked for information, people in town were hesitant to talk about the family, and she even was threatened a couple of times. At the motel that she was staying at, she made a friend, Felix, who was in the room next to hers.
Eventually she gathered a great deal of information, and the last thing she did almost caught up with her. She went to a location and once she was discovered, a large number of men started searching. She managed to evade them and wound up stumbling on an old cabin which brought the missing pieces of the puzzle together.
To discover exactly why she went to Loeb, who was searching for her and what significance the cabin played then you must read this story.
Oh Kate, what a predicament you have landed yourself in this time. This is the 10th book in the brilliant Kate Gazarra series and it was well worth the wait. Captain Kate Gazarra of the Chattanooga PD is in deep water from the very beginning, she has Internal Affairs snapping at her heels after a jumped up complaint of bullying a prisoner during an interview. Kate, impulsive, Feisty but fiercely loyal is out on her own, no badge, no team just her own belief in justice. Based in a small town where interbreeding and incest have occurred, would anyone talk to Kate ? there was an air of fear in the small community, why was everyone afraid of a man who had died many years ago. This book has everything you would expect from a Blair Howard story, it is fast paced, exciting and suspenseful, Kate questions her future , should she continue to work with the bureaucrats at the Chattanooga PD or give in her badge and join her old partner Harry Stark as a PI where she could work without her hands tied behind her back, she is kept grounded by love interest handsome Wilcox Dorman a decorated Gunnery sergeant in the US Marines. This is a great story that I couldn't put down, a well deserved five stars
When Kate comes across a case involving a brother and sister team she’s left feeling a great unease. She is then shocked to find that Internal Affairs are on her case once more. Hurt and disappointed with the Chattanooga Police Dept and Chief Wesley she agrees to see a shrink and accept a suspension from duty. Kate being who she is, is not taking it lying down so decides she’ll travel to Loeb where the siblings originate from to find out why they are such dreadful individuals. Unfortunately Loeb is a small town place where tongues are tied where that family are concerned. Kate is taken on a journey where she has to rely on a small time crook, her lover Will Dorman and the occasional snippet of information from the locals. Following many threats and a disturbing visit to a salvage yard late at night where she is nearly found she finally finds what she has suspected. But she can’t let on that she’s been working the case. This is a gripping and thrilling tale. I was actually shaking whilst Kate was in the salvage yard so sure was I that she’d be located but nothing prepared me for the crawl space. Absolutely loved this book Blair Howard keeps them coming and they just keep getting better!
Captain Kate Gazzara is back, well kind of! After the Nicolette Percy case, Kate has been suspended. In order to save her job from Internal Affairs she has to issue an apology, see the "shrink", and take the suspension. Everyone but IA knows the accusation of police brutality is bogus, but sometimes you have to play the game! After the shrink tells Kate maybe she needs some time away from Chattanooga, Kate decides she is going to Loeb, Tennessee. Loeb is where the Lawson's grew up and Kate is hoping to find some answers. How could one family be so wrong? Kate is about to find out the citizens of Loeb don't like strangers. Can Kate find the answers she needs to move on from the Nicolette Percy case? Or will she push too hard and lose everything?
A fantastic, page turning, nail biting read! Kate's character has evolved from the Harry Starke days. She's a beautiful, intelligent, street smart homicide detective with a heart of gold. A cop who cares. Watching her develop and grow from Book 1 to this Book 10 is more than worth your reading time. These are books you can read more than once and enjoy. As an ARC reader for author Blaire Howard I was given this book for a fair and honest review. Fairly and Honestly, you just can't go wrong with Catherine!
Kate is in a terrible mood after being chased away from her job and her team at the Chattanooga Police Department. She's not welcome there because someone she was investigating lodged a complaint against her. Then her spineless boss told her she needed to see a shrink and take a couple if weeks off. So she takes the time off. Things continue to head south for her, even though she's driving north, and her boss stays on her case to become a reformed, compliant, bootykissing, investigator. Well thats no fun. So she continues her drive north to investigate the family of the man who complained about her. In a brief sentence one could say all-hell breaks loose in the small town she lands in. She does very little there that could be considered safe. She frequently puts herself in grave danger and has none of the back up from her police department because she's out if town and on suspension. Thank God for ex cons who've turned over a new leaf or this series might have come to a bitter end. Blair Howard will be able to continue to write about Kate Gazzara and his fans will have more days of bliss reading about Kate. I Voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. Once again Blair Howard has created an impressive winner of a story. The characters here are true to life and three dimensional. They are the good guys and the bad guys that you read about any time you check out your favorite news website. Catherine (better known as Kate) Gazzarra is a tenacious, determined, single-minded detective who doesn't know the word quit and whose stubbornness is one of these days going to write a check her skills can't cash!! And while Kate carries the majority of this story, her team is never far behind and always has her back. I was slightly concerned to see tiny cracks in the relationship between Kate and Janet (Kate's partner) but considering the stress they have been under it's really not surprising. While this story is not quite as active as some of the others, it is not sedate by any means. There's plenty of suspense as Kate manages to antagonize an entire town and bring all kinds of mayhem down upon her head. Check out the Kate Gazzarra series. They are great stories.
Kate Gazzara never takes the easy way and Blair Howard has weaved another intriguing scenario for her. Accused of overstepping her position she finds herself suspended. Due to complaint of a suspect she knowingly believes has done unbelievable sexual crime to a corpse she must clear herself.
Thus begins a trek into a series of small town mysteries that no one is willing to share. But perseverance pays off plus a little luck. In the end Blair Howard weaves the story to make her a hero that no one know is responsible. However, in the end she by her actions manages to once again be back in the good graces of the Police Chief and his bosses.
Blair makes the journey worth while so this is a recommended read........ Five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star
This is a purchased book. Blair Howard did advance me a copy for an early review. However, the Review is mine and has not been influenced by the Author or any other entities and no compensation was received.

When I read fiction, I read for pleasure and at times to stretch my imagination and that is also why, in my opinion, most people love super heroes. Now, I may not go so far as to call Kate Gazzara a “super-hero” but she sure is one gutsy lady. She is bound and determined to see that justice is done and to understand what makes certain individuals tick. While under investigation for her own actions, she sets out to uncover the reasons behind other people’s actions. Of course, this lands her in some risky situations potentially costing her physical harm and/or the loss of her job. I wanted to keep reading to know if it was worth it all in the end.
Always well-written, while thoroughly engaging, this novel allows us to become better acquainted with Kate’s character while in pursuit of uncovering a mystery that has held one small town hostage for a very long time. In the process, Kate develops a unique and fortuitous friendship - adding more interest to the story and certainly worth reading…I received an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review.
The Kate Gazzara series provides some really great reads as we follow the ups and downs of this rather individual detective, who has an unfortunate tendency to bend the rules to their limit, but she does manage to clear up a lot of cases. In this book she is suspended after being accused of abusing a prisoner. She Heads to the prisoner's home town to try and find out if she can find out anything to help her understand why he did what he did. Unfortunately she finds a town that is still dominated by a dead crime family and where there are a lot of unexplained disappearances, but can she find anything to help her and to convict her nemesis. The book features all of Blair Howard's expertise, with phenomenal characters, an exciting and well developed plot, and a very exciting climax. I especially liked that the plot was very unpredictable and took lots of twists and turns. I don't describe many books as unputdownable, but this one definitely deserves that description, I really did find it difficult to stop reading it.
This latest installment in Mr Howard's Kate Gazzara series show Kate in a different light. She is on suspension for mistreating a suspect. Forced to go to therapy she seemingly takes the doctor's advice to get out of town. However, instead of a vacation she heads to tiny Loeb, TN, family home of the suspect she is accused of mistreating. She just can't let that case go, so she is risking her job by doing a little investigating on her own. Here we see Kate working alone, taking risks that could ruin her career and those of her team, not the organized professional if somewhat unorthodox police captain. We have to wonder if she will soon be joining Harry Starke at his detective agency, if she survives, that is. I love Mr Howard's style of writing that draws you in from the get-go and keeps you reading until you are finished. I look forward to more. Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book.
When Kate is suspended for a month, her gun and badge are taken away, she decides to take a vacation. Where? Right into the heart of the town of Loeb, Tennessee where the man accusing her of police brutality grew up. Posing as an author, Kate soon finds out the people who live in Loeb don’t like outsiders, they also don’t like talking about the Lawson family. To get the information she wants, Kate ignores the threats to leave town and instead keeps prodding until she finds herself alone in the dark and in a great deal of danger.
I have to admit, I thought Kate was crazy for doing the things she did in this novel. I found myself holding my breath and thinking “Kate, get your butt out of there” more than once. It’s an exciting story, a true can’t put it down type of book. Blair Howard did himself proud.
I have read several of Blair's books and seldom have I read any as thrilling as this book. The tense and riveting prose kept me always wanting to pick up my Kindle and keep reading about how a small town's hoodlum family kept that town in mortal fear even after more than a decade. With their lingering fears of the certain dire circumstances would descend upon them they kept their silence to everyone they knew or met. Blair writes with such skill so as to keep the reader off-kilter and seeking the answers that only Kate could discover for us. And discover she did! Some things seemed amiss throughout and our central character ferreted out each gruesome evil-doer and there (hoped for invisible) gruesome deeds. It's what made for interesting and enjoyable reading.
Interesting to note, Catherine, Book 10 in the Kate Gazzara series, is indeed about Kate and sets off a great introduction to this fourth set of novels. Right away, we learn that Captain Gazzara's team has successfully arrested a rather nasty perpetrator who, unfortunately, has taken advantage of a few minutes alone during interrogation and managed to get Kate herself in trouble with the Chief, the Mayor, and Internal Affairs. Placed on Suspension and hampered by the limitations of that situation, Kate strives to uncover enough information to bring justice to a satisfactory conclusion. She finds herself in more than one dangerous situation, but persists in spite of the dangers she encounters. I enjoyed following her efforts to achieve success in spite of the challenges and found it hard to put this one down.
CATHERINE by Blair Howard kept me on the edge of my seat. Catherine is a hard nosed cop with a secret good heart, huge sence of integrity, brave, smart who plays by the rules even if she has to bend them slightly.
This book actually had me in the grip of the story so strongly I couldn't stop reading until I knew what happened. Catherine followed her instints even though she herself knew it was a really bad idea. She couldn't let innocent people be forgotten.
I loved seeing a more indepth side of Catherine, which made me want more of her stories. I admire her loyalty and passion. Lol even if I kept thinking " call Harry you need help girl".
Blair Howard is one of my favorite authors. I read all of his Lt. Kate Gazzara novels to date. Catherine is his tenth book in that series and I believe it is the best one yet. It helped me to see another side of Kate as she is shown in a different role than a police captain. Kate’s stay in Loeb, Tennessee, was so realistic that I actually Googled Loeb to see if it really exists. (It doesn’t.) I read each of the Gazzara novels in the order that they were written. I believe that’s the best way to read them, but I think this book would be enjoyable to read on its own. There was constant action that kept me on the edge of my seat. It’s one of those books that when it’s finished, you wish there was more because you loved it so much.
Kate (Catherine) had just finished a case that resulted in her being investigated by Internal Affairs and being suspended. She felt that she had done nothing wrong, but was forced to accept the suspension,. The people she had run across in that investigation, members of one specific family, lent her to question what would cause people to behave in such an abnormal way. Kate, being Kate, could not let that curiosity simmer and die. The book takes you through her adventures, which included danger, treacherous adversaries, possible murders, and a smattering of helpful people.. You could see her working through her thought processes while she put the pieces together. It's an interesting read and really gives you insight into Kate's character.
This book opens with such force that it knocks the breath right out of the reader. From page one we know that Kate will not only be in the lion's den, but she will pull the lion's tail the whole way through the book. And that she does. At the dark junkyard scene, I could barely read on. My heart was thumping, and I was holding my breath. I found that covering my eyes in frightening scenes does not work when reading. It's okay for movies but not for this novel. Call me a Scaredy-Cat if you will, but I certainly was on the edge of my seat. I had to know what would happen next, so I did uncover my eyes and soldiered on, but I did continue to hold my breath. Readers, you are in for one wild ride on this go-round. I read this on my Kindle.
Kate’s last case is solved. But because of the nature of the case she’s left feeling sick and angry. Put on suspension for supposed mistreatment of one of the characters involved in that case, she heads off to the town where they were raised. Trying to discover what is it about that family that produced such twisted offspring. She introduces herself as a writer doing research for a book. The townspeople are suspicious and apparently still fear this family. But she presses on, putting herself in dangerous situations. In the end she prevails, but not without a lot of heart stopping moments.
As an ARC reader for this author I received this book for review. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m sure you will too
Really enjoying the Kate Gazzara's books but there are some inconsistencies from previous books. They don't affect the stories at all but I wonder why they are different to what was originally written. In book #9 Kate Gazzara's boss's secretary is listed as Linda but it's always been Cathy and Kate's age jumps from 42 in an earlier book to 40 now. The end of book 9 is different from the way book 10 starts. As I said it doesn't affect the great stories but I just wondered why there are discrepancies. I would have liked more of Harry Starke in them. Kate was such an important character in Harry Starke's books and I thought it should of been reciprocated in the Kate Gazzara's books. Looking forward to book 11 next.
Kate is in trouble with Internal Affairs after a case about a brother and sister. She is then put on suspension.
Kate is with the Chattanooga police department and after her suspension she decides to go to Loeb where the siblings came from to find out more about them.
It turns out to be a small town where the people are not willing to talk about the family of a man who died many years ago. Katie has a few near misses with a black truck that is owned by the son of a junkyard owner. Late one night Katie goes to look around and finds 2 skeletons in an old cabin.
Kate’s suspect fakes a panic attack while being interrogated by Kate in the interview room. He is taken to the hospital and files brutality charges against Kate. Internal affairs get involved and Kate is suspended and has to go to a shrink. She has turned her badge and gun into the chief. Kate gets involved in investigating her accuser and family after being forbidden to do so by the chief. Kate is in never stop action and has one problem after another. She has disregarded the terms of her suspension and has gone to the hometown of her accuser to investigate his background. She is out in the sticks without any backup as she conducts her investigation with a unfriendly town.
This book was just wow. All the peripheral characters faded to the background and the protagonist of the series pretty much went solo. While I missed Kates interaction with her team, the story didn't suffer from that lack and she brought her trademark wit to her interactions with the individuals that peopled this book. Great well written storyline and plenty of action combined to keep me glued to this story.
Kates in trouble again, this time earning a suspension for doing her job. Not one to sit back and wait she investigates the people who brought charges against her, determined to prove she's being targeted.
I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.
Captain Kate Gazzara solved the last case of Nicolette Percy, but the solution generated more questions than answers. Kate Gazzara, suspended from duty and in danger of losing her job. She takes some vacation time along with her suspension because she is determined to find the answers and embarks on a one woman investigation deep into the heart of Appalachia. It isn’t long after her arrival into town before people are not happy she is there. Trouble follows her everywhere she goes. Lots of twist, turns and suspense through out the book. If you enjoy a good mystery with suspense this is a must read.
A formal complaint is made against Kate. The criminal waging the complaint is one sick individual. But IA gets involved and Kate is on suspension. She has to see a shrink. The psychologist recommends she get out of town for a vacation. Kate goes to Loeb to find out more about the family of the Lawsons. Kate meets a lot of resistance from the small town's residents. She tells them she is a writer doing research. Kate bends the rules to get justice. This is a novel with a lot of heart pounding moments. You will not want to put this one down.
Being a fan of the Kate Gazzara series I was surprised at how the book started off. Kate is on suspension for mistreating a suspect. It wasn't a surprise that internal affairs believed the suspect over Kate's team since they have it in for her. She was forced to make a public apology and go to counseling along with a months suspension. Kate uses her time off to go to the town where the suspect came from hoping to find something to help her case. The book is engrossing from start to finish. If you enjoy good mystery stories you will love this book.
