The crystal sleeps... The road is long... Dangers lie around every corner.
Dusk and his friends make their way across the Ditanian Empire believing they are no longer being pursued by the Circle of the Dawn, but the road isn't as easy as they expected. The country is wild and unforgiving as winter settles in. Tensions between the friends rise as their trek becomes more and more dangerous the closer they get to Emerald Deep. With some help along the way, Dusk draws ever closer to his destination, but the shadow still looms overhead, silent and unseen.

Dusk has escaped the Circle of the Dawn. Or so he thinks. As he, Tara, and Lex continue their journey to Emerald Deep, they will encounter many challenges. Dusk’s road to freedom is plagued by monstrous beasts and deceptive enemies. And just when he thinks the worst is over, a new threat arises. Dusk will soon learn he can never let his guard down.
I absolutely love Dusk’s character. His appreciation for experiencing something as simple as fishing is so uplifting. He is trying to live his best life even if he is on the run. And the conflict within him is so well written. He wants to trust people and help anyone he can, but there are some hard lessons for him to learn in The Crystal Archivist. I can only hope he hasn’t learned too late.
With this addition to The Crystalline Chronicles, the plot is not played as safe. The characters end up in many more situations where the give and take of battle are better balanced. I appreciated this shift in the conflict. I did find some characters dropped into the background in this one. And while I can see this happening from Dusk’s point of view it felt a bit too abrupt. I wanted a few more tense moments of conversation and body language to gradually build up this plot point.
Regardless, I still enjoyed this story. Watching Dusk evolve as a character is as heartwarming as it is terrifying to see what trouble he can get into. At times I wanted to yell at him for his decisions, but ultimately he just doesn’t know any better yet. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book and how much more Dusk will develop.
The Crystal Archivist is an excellent sequel in the Crystalline Chronicles. This continuation of Dusk's quest for freedom and answers to the eye of Tephyss contains more mysteries, mythology and magic. The world building and narrative in this novel are solid and interesting- 100% page turner. I was constantly wondering what would happen next! The character interactions and dialogue make them feel real-so it's easy to invest. I enjoyed the evolution of the protagonist in this chapter of the series. There are highs and lows that deepen the story- I can't wait for book 3.
It's a refreshing take on the fantasy adventure genre. I appreciate all of the LGBTQ characters introduced that are very relatable. Every book ends on a cliff hanger which makes me want to read the next one even more!
Fast-paced, yet it feels like we’re with Dusk and gang on this journey for much longer. Every scene feels written with purpose. An improvement over book one.
While the first book was slow, I enjoyed reading it. This book was painful. I am not sure if I will read the next one. I get that this is a set up for what is intended to be an epic ending but it lost me with its cruelty to the main character and to the reader for making me wade through pages and pages of betrayal. If I want to read about manipulators and liars, I will read about the GOP.
There's something very awkward about the writing style - especially the dialogues. Add in a few bad edits when it comes to character development (acting out of character), plot (a few "wait, when did that happen?" moments), and world-building (not all of them are human? Huh?), and I skimmed more than I did in the first book. However, there is something there that keeps me curious to see how this all works out... I just wish the author was taught better... And read more...
The LGBT aspect is clearer in that book, even if it is not the main focus of the author. Once more, a lot of very interesting ideas. The second part is not surprising at all but stays pleasant enough. Every reader can see the end coming, but it’s not a disappointment. You’re just curious to discover what will follow, because the world building is still impressive.
Interesting twist but obvious. It's a odd story..seemingly slow but also fast, it sort of reaches..and reaches...but always falling short of that uuummphhh that makes an even better story.
