[Yao Yao, if it’s you, how would you go about dating a professional gamer?] Tong Yao thought for a moment, before earnestly responding — —
If it was me, I wouldn’t date a professional gamer. If I had that kind of patience, then I might as well use it to get into Tsinghua University or Beijing University.

I heard about the drama first but as soon as I came to know that it was adapted from this book, I simply had to read through this before diving into the drama adaptation.

The gaming scenes were harder to understand in book, but thankfully the drama came to rescue in that department since I'm not into any kind of gaming ´-﹏-`

Ever wondered what if Love o2o and Go Go Squid had a baby?

No?

Well, I guess I'm weird lol

But if they do, it's this book. It has to be this one.

It had lot many more gaming scenes, and that was the spotlight of the entire book, and the e-sports scenes here weren't as romanticised as in Love o2o, nor did it take a backseat as in Go Go Squid. It was more mainstream and everything else revolved around it.

Thankfully there were no messy, unnecessary arcs with family drama or unnecessary people.

Even with lots of e-sports scenes, you don't have to worry because romance between Chessman and Smiling? It was anything but lacking. Cough Chessman cough.

The team members made the book more enjoyable. Can't wait to see if there's ever a book for K *excited

Chessman is a grouchy, tyrant leader of their group who hardly talks or smiles until Smiling joins the team. I'm pretty sure that he fell for her after he was defeated by her during their 1v1 game (◍•ᴗ•◍)✧*。

He's such a tsundere smh

Reading the novel after watching the drama is better since theres alot of parts that were a little rushed in the series. I just wished the ending was extended a little.

Dnf after chapter 15

I just couldn’t get into this writing style. Also it’s so weird that she isn’t given a schedule or told what her training should be like. She’s just… there. Perhaps I’ve just read too many high-tier esports novels so something like this feels like it lacks depth.

as most people here, i'd guess, i found the book through its c-drama adaptation.

i love sports-team focused stories, like Haikyuu!! and The Foxhole Court, and this feels very much in the same vein, with the added aspect of a romance plot!

The dynamics inside our main ZGDX team, as well as the rivalries and friendships with other teams and players, the training and strategy planning, as well as the whole LOL competition of course, truly scratch the same itch as all my other favorite sport-related media. I also enjoyed learning about the rules of League of Legends, this book taught me all the relevant information about this e-sport, so when i watched this years (real life) Worlds finale i could follow the gameplay decently!

a negative in comparsion to the drama would sadly be the very much missing characterisation of my dear Old K and Cat. i thought the show portrayed them very shallowly, but it turns out, in the nearly 1000 pages of the book the author made even less time for these two boys. honestly, they are 2 of the 6 team members, and we know nothing about them, and barely anything about Little Fatty and Lu Yue. i am really disappointed that a story of this length couldn't give the team members any backstory at all, they felt like cardboard standees only there to occasionally make a funny comment or start a problem.
besides them though, we do meet a lot of interesting players and get to know about their motivations, love for the game, etc.

i am always looking for a good sports team story, and this will include from now on esports!

As I started watching this cute Chinese drama on Netflix "Falling Into Your Smile", I found out that it was adapted from this book. So I stopped watching and came to read first. It's a really sweet and cute romcom. I definitely enjoyed my time.

It starts with a girl joining an eSports team and wanting to prove that girls can also game and compete just like anyone else. Id: Smiling
Then there is the team captain, one of the top players in the world, who's stone faced most of the time, gives a cold vibe and barely says a word. However, he takes his responsibility as captain extremely seriously making sure everyone's needs are cared for, if there are any public or private issues he'd ago above and beyond to fix. Id: Chessman

Chessman is gonna like how hardworking and dedicated Smiling is. While treating her just as a new player regardless of gender makes Smiling more comfortable and confident around her teammates.

This respect and appreciation would develop into "She's my Girl, stay away you brats".

i wanted to read this only bc i watched the drama and wanted to see how different it was from the book + i enjoy reading the esports novels, they're really fun, but the writing in this was so bad, the scenes that were supposed to be sexy were at the very least extremely uncomfortable and on top of that there was tons of questionable dialogue... i worked hard trying to finish reading it, i'm gonna try and forget this mess. one additional star for it still being entertaining from time to time tho

• Read after having loved the drama
• Weird writing style, a bit distracting
• Relationships and characters flashed out better in drama

I think I should preface this by saying this is the first book wrote by a Chinese author I read, so there definitely was a cultural barrier I had climb to understand and put everything in the right context.
I had some trouble keeping myself engaged with the story towards the end because it became repetitive, after all this is still an esports-themed story so, if you're like me and you aren't really that interested in videogames, it's bound to became a bit boring when the inner mechanics of the matches are explained over and over again.
That being said, I finished the book not because it was so captivating that I couldn't put it down but because I liked the drama a lot and I was really curious to see the differences in between the two works, what they decided to keep and to change in the live adaptation.
Plus, I honestly missed the characters.

*Minor SPOILERS ahead*

I'd say that the drama altogether has better storytelling. The plot is pretty much the same but some lines of dialogue and some scenes are rearranged to create, in my opinion, better and more defined characters.
Lao K and Lao Mao have distinct personalities in the drama, while in the book they are pretty much interchangeable. Ming God is almost useless in the novel as well: apart from a small section at the very beginning he isn't really relevant for the rest of the story, he's there only to hit the players with a clipboard when they're being to noisy. At least in the drama he actually takes on the mentor role and he's the ML's close confidant.
Even the character arcs are better developed in the drama. I feel like the author sometimes just forgets about someone an then picks them up again when they can help with the main plot.

Everything is told very literally. You'll have the main character acting nervous, then she'll think she's nervous, somebody will tell her to calm down because she's too nervous and she'll answer she can't because she's too nervous.
It's overkill.
We get it. She's nervous.

You'll never really get to experience characters subtly evolving without being told they have changed. Except for Lu Si Cheng, nobody ever seems to have an original thought, they're always being told what to do. Especially the main character, Tong Yao.
Ex:
She's the only character with whom we're provided some insight but our knowledge remains very ground level. We don't get to know her and her thought process, we're just told point blank how she reacts to events.

At the same time, the novel lacks scene setting: the book is mostly written around lines of dialogue, with little to no descriptions of places, context and especially other characters' feelings. If you can read in between the lines you can make up with your imagination for what's not there. Yet, you can't really get immersed enough in the story and in the characters that it feels like you're the one living it. It's more like being a spectator to something that's happening right in front of you.

When a character doesn't know how to respond or what to say it's written like a blank line on a script, as in:

Character: "........"

I think that's a missed opportunity to expand on the characters. Tell me why the aren't saying anything, describe their expression, what they felt, what they wanted to say. It could be fixed with a simple: X was taken aback by Y's comment, or X didn't know how to answer that, or X just stared at Y.

Also, I feel like I should have a talk with the author about the meaning of consent...
There are some scenes in the novel that are very borderline in this aspect.
Even if you want to portray the FL as reluctant at first and then have her caving in and ending up enjoying it, there are more tasteful ways to write it.
As I understand it, it might be a cultural divide, apparently in Chinese novels it's not uncommon to have women in a passive, almost reluctantly pudic role. Still, I think it could have been written better. My western brain definitely had trouble processing the spicier scenes because, even if nothing really graphic is described, leading up to it Tong Yao definitely doesn't want anything to happen (she even asks to stop or to slow down) and it feels like she almost has to be tied down for it happen, but afterwards she boasts about it with her best friend as if it's normal to react that way.
I felt I was getting mixed signals and I'm glad the drama changed this dinamic.

On a lighter term, I really enjoyed discovering that in the drama they switched Lu Si Cheng's cigarette addiction to sweets. That makes it funnier.
Even though it's obviously censorship, it's hilarious to me how half the team keeps telling a grown man to stop eating sugar and then takes away his lollipops.

In the end, I discovered that the changes worked a lot better with the intended plot and actually improved on the original material.
I think the novel as it is should have been a first draft, a stepping stone to build upon. The feeling I get is that of an unfinished work.
I really like the story and I believe the idea is solid, it could have been a really great book that even dabbles in more serious topics as gender equality, cyberbulling, parasocial relationships and double standards without letting go of the fun, light, rom-com side of it.

I wouldn't say it's a bad read at all, if you can get through the phrasing and a couple of rough scenes it can actually be an entertaining read. If you can't but are still interested in the story I recommend the drama, Falling into your smile, available with english subtitles on youtube😉

(Nǐ wéixiào shí hěn měi), or You're Beautiful When You Smile also known as Falling Into Your Smile due to the cdrama adaption, incorporates the pro e-sport scene with romance, and does it excellently.

I appreciate how Tong Yao stands up for female within the e-sport scene, I also liked the fact that the story also brought up societal problems. Although the story seems to end at 155 chapters, it exactly ends at 191 chapters. Everything before 155 chapters is about ZGDX nationally in China, whilst the remainder is about ZGDX internationally. The cdrama ends with 155 (but incorporates a couple of points from the remainder), I sincerely hope for season 2 with ZGDX going internationally.

The book is great. But the ending falls short. A couple extra episodes or an epilogue would've been good. It just finished super fast, throught the book they were centered on the personal, but the end is all competition and the personal is left behind... It feels... Unbalanced.

Read this after watching the drama .To be honest Falling into your smile is my favorite drama. I just love their teammates and their friendship .

1.E sports
2.Grumpy x sunshine
3.She fell first he fell harder

The romance is good but the comedy is even better no book has ever made me laugh out loud so many times. The MMC was a total tyrant at first but later he became a shameless thug. The FMC was very funny .Their teammates and manager were hilarious i think most of the time their comedy was carrying the whole book .i feel like i know them for a long time and have a great bond with them .This book and drama will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Falling Into Your Smile is my favorite Chinese because of its diverse emotion portrayal.
Reading this book gave me a better insight on what each character felt at a particular point of time.
The book reminded me, why I love FIYS, Tong Yao, Lu Sicheng and the whole of ZGDX team.

Right now, I can't even choose which one I liked more, the book or the drama. Sometimes, some parts were better in the drama, while some were better in the book. However, you can't miss both.

Well, why are the fans so right? So many of their comments were spot on.

There were a few insignificant differences such as: The character Hierophant (from the drama) was changed to Pope (in the book), The intimate scenes were incomparable. The book made me blush every few minutes. Lu Sicheng here was insatiable.

My favorite character was Little Fatty. He was a real support for his AD (in LPL and life). He was the funniest and the most lovable person. He was so relatable when he said, "So this is how it is to be in love, loves makes you enjoy doing meaningless arguments."

Although I wished the ending was different. I wanted to read TongCheng couple get married. Nevertheless, YBWYS will go down in history as my favorite Romance Novel.

It took me 3 1/5 days to read it. I could not put it down. It was quite entertaining. I do love myself a good e-sports romance. This was quite a fun one. I loved the fact that the main character is the first female pro e-sports player in her league. The dynamic between her and her teammates is fantastic. I loved seeing these characters grow and improve on their way to chase after the world cup.

It's so rare to find book and TV series/movie that are following the same line. I found out about the TV show first and when I learned that there is book too, I decided that I definitely need to read it. It was really hard to find it, because there is no official translation to English, but it was so worth all of the searching. There were even some scenes that every word in the book was the same in the TV series. I really enjoy reading the book and I'm sad that it finished.

WOW, WOW and WOW!!! THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!! The c-drama”Falling into your smile “ is my all time favourite TV show and that’s why I started this book and it is AS GOOD AS THE DRAMA. In the drama it was kinda hard for me to follow the gameplay of the matches cuz I don’t play LOL , but I think that in the book everything was really well explained. And the characters are so deep and well developed. I don’t think a book this year can top this one for me 10/5⭐️

Me senti lendo uma fanfic do CBLOL.

I watched the drama series and blazed through the translated novel during every break I had, and finally I am done with this behemoth of a series. I think consuming both media forms of the series made for a much more enjoyable experience because the book was based on League of Legends, which I am more familiar with than Onmyoji Arena. The book leans heavily into the gameplay, and I appreciated it a lot because the dynamics conveyed through the matches on Summoner's Rift outshone some of the conversations between the characters. It's making me want to play League again. The characters don't have much depth, not like they do in the drama (interestingly enough), but I loved everything about it. Some people complained about the writing style, but it's a Chinese translated web novel...I don't find it particularly better or worse than the other ones I've seen. I'm giving it four stars because I did get the ick from Lu Sicheng in the beginning of their relationship, but I think it's more of how the author was conveying certain events. Once we passed that icky middle part, their relationship was super satisfying to read. I'm going to let this series marinate in my head for a little longer.

I just finished this novel. It was something different from what I read so far.
My 3 start rating is because of the overall story and the writing style. Like many others I came because of the drama which I watched twice, but I can't say the same about this, I won't read again and not because is too long, just because some things were wrote poorly.

The first thing was how they "cast" their spells, like "qwwarq" or how it was, like what can I understand from this. I know they are the keys from keyboard, but what can I understand from this?

Another thing is, I don't know if is just me, but I got over all those comments. Maybe they are important for the story to understand how the others see the ZGDS, but for me was just something I could get over.

It was a nice reading, I can't lie, but at some point I got bored, but one thing is for sure, some things aren't the same in the drama. So.... at least, this thing kept me to read at some point to discover what is in the next chapter.

I loved the book so much!! I watched the show first and it was AMAZING!! I hoped the book would be equally as good and it did not disappoint! I will say it took me forever to find a way to read the book and when I did find it, it didn’t have the whole book which was disappointing, but one of my friends was who lives on china gave me the last few chapters of it. For anyone who wants to read it, you can find the first 110 ish chapters on webcomics. Anyways, for the actual book, I loved the romance and plot, it actually seemed believable. I’m not the biggest fan of romance that’s outlandish and unbelievable but this seemed realistic in romance terms. In all I would 100% recommend this book!!

Read a online translated version online after watching the TV show on Netflix. The book explains the game a little better for people like me who have no knowledge of the game.

Romance wise, While the TV show was relatively "clean" with alot of staring at each other, there was much more affection in the book which I liked.

Spoilers ahead!

I find the lack of consent really disturbing. On how he seemingly forced himself on her and took advantage of her innocence, not to mention without protection. For an educated female who have studied college abroad, this part is quite unbelievable.

I found it to be an enjoyable story and had a great time reading the novel. The interactions between the female lead and male lead are so funny! However, I can’t give it a full five stars because, while I liked the romance, it doesn’t quite meet expectations for a novel centered around e-sports. There were moments where the plot felt dragged out, and other parts, especially towards the end, felt a bit rushed. The main character’s goal isn’t really accomplished until the very end of the book, maybe (at first) the author is planning a sequel, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

I read it after watching the drama : sooo there were many good even great things (premise, humor, SMiling was much better then in the drama, more competitions), there were minor things that i didnt like so much (this writing style is not my preference, underdeveloped charachters especially Lao K i Lao Mao- my babies) but uhhh...i really had problems with reading intimacy scenes between our mid and ad which made me uhhh...uncomfortable

anyways, jiayou ZGDX

It's very engrossing while reading and it feels like the best book ever during the reading experience. However, once you're done and you take a step back, it's just a regular romance novel. This goes for both the drama and the novel. There are definitely better e-sports novel (at least when it comes to the e-sports arc). But I do love a good ML who can tease the Fl well so I am partial to this book, in some sense. It also helps that the drama has a great soundtrack!
