Creative problem-solving is at the heart of innovation, and some of the world's most innovative companies are very systematic in following this approach. Most people would assume that creativity and discipline can't coexist, and that only when resources are replete and the talent best-in-class can one be creative. But nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, creativity thrives amid constraints and calls for great discipline.
Pioneered by IDEO and Stanford d.school, design thinking is one such approach that draws inspiration from the realm of product design. However, it shouldn't be narrowly associated with the world of start-ups and technology or thought of as something limited to product development. The method is increasingly being used in a wider context and can help us address a vast array of problems.
This book attempts to offer a practitioner's perspective on how the tenets, methods and discipline of design thinking can be applied across a range of domains, including to everyday problems, and help us become expert problem-solvers through the use of the appropriate toolsets, skill sets and mindsets.
It gives us a different perspective when it comes to solving problems. It helps us address a vast array of problems with the use of the appropriate toolsets, skill sets and mindsets. There are examples, case studies of renowned personalities and brands that help us understand the concept in a better way.
With the help of diagrams, charts and tables, the author tries to make it easier for the readers. I liked the way the book is sequenced, the way the concepts are explained by the author.
The writing style of the author is simple and engaging that one could relate to. This book will help readers in many ways and helps us grow as an innovator.
One should apply the techniques and tools provided by the author in our daily lives for better results. It's an insightful and inspiring book
Overall, it's a must-read book that will help us Grow. For all the non-fiction lovers, do not miss this book.
"Design Your Thinking: The Mindset, Toolsets & Skill Set for Creative Problem-Solving" by Pavan Soni is a non-ficion book which I have recently started reading and OMG, it's so gooodddddddd. It talks about a whole new perspective and a whole new framework of problem solving and creativity.
I had just about this concept but never got into the depth of it, until I came across this book. The book is filled with various examples, case studies and pie charts to explain this concept even better. I am more than 100 pages in and this is the book which I must have highlighted/underlined/annotated the most.
The book is very systematically written and explained. There are in total 10 chapters, which starts with explaining the readers what is Creative Thinking and then further gets deeper into the framework of Creative Thinking. It also explains us the importance of Creative Thinking in current times.
The last chapter talks about a two day creative workshop. The book consists of a summary mind map of the entire book, which is too good. I am sure with this one book you will be thoroughly able to understand the concept of Creative Thinking.

What I really enjoyed about this book is how it takes something that often feels abstract—design thinking—and makes it simple and usable in real life. It reminded me that creativity isn’t just for artists or techies; it’s for anyone willing to approach problems with curiosity and discipline. This book is thought-provoking and a great reminder of how design thinking can actually drive strategy forward. I’d say it’s equally valuable for start-up founders as it is for corporate leaders who want to spark innovation in their teams.
One line that stayed with me was: “Go for a walk; cultivate hunches; write everything down, but keep your folders messy; embrace serendipity; make generative mistakes; take on multiple hobbies; frequent coffeehouses and other liquid networks; follow the links; let others build on your ideas; borrow, recycle, reinvent.”
It’s advice that feels playful yet powerful—and perfectly captures the spirit of this book.
Comprehensive, power-stacked gem book, for unorthodox and unconventional approaches of problem solving, by virtue of which it becomes a must-read for anyone who desires to look for an innovative approach of any situation or an issue. Dr. Pavan has put across colossal efforts to portray some mind-boggling experiences and examples, which are just not in theory but well practiced in various industries and different sectors of profession. The vectors of length, breadth and height of these approaches mentioned in the book, makes you enthralled to challenge your beliefs of viewing towards a situation like we might have read, heard or practiced in our scope of horizon.
Not to be a spoiler, but certainly there are some great tips, methods & frameworks provided by Dr. Pavan of what lies to be a Design Thinker!
I have been fortunate enough to hear some of the Talks of Dr. Pavan Soni. This book is the one of the best books on Design Thinking- Innovation. Some amazing feature of the book: *written in simple fluid way *Lessons from academic research relevant to corporates on design thinking, ideation, innovation, and many more topics *Hundreds of contextual nuggets, examples and practices from the entire globe *Chunks of wisdom from Pavan’s own experience of working with well-known brands I strongly recommend everyone to read the book and get started in making the right business decisions.
Design Your Thinking really made an impact on my Thinking Pattern. Especially the last chapter transformed me to be a real Design Thinker. The book has depth of relevant case studies which propels me to innovate. One of the best that I read in recent times. It is an eye opener to realms of Innovation, sequential guide to take mindful innovation journey, tips to become Impactful Innovator and how to be a prolific catalyst in an agile organization. I am delighted to be part of his team, coached personally by him. I will cherish the moments through out my life time. He empowered me to be Trainer of DT. I am grateful for his generosity and sharing of all the information through his teachings.
A very well researched with relatable industry examples from which one is not only learning Design Thinking concepts but also understanding what do some organizations do differently which makes them standout in terms of their people, processes, products and methods of innovation. I also had an opportunity, thanks to NHRD Bangalore to be part of DT workshop and certification led by Dr. Pavan himself and it was through this workshop that I read his book Design your thinking. It is not only a great read but also can be referenced as a good textbook to keep going back to when I want to refresh some of the concepts of DT. What I love about this book is its flow of writing is extremely engaging as it keeps going back and forth between concepts and it's realtime application. Must read!
A must read for all professionals, Author emphasizes on the benefits of systematic thinking, one of the key takeaways from the book is that we end up jumping to solutions pretty quickly and don't spend enough time on the problem itself. Author has also presented very useful tools for generating ideas and how to prioritize them. Book is filled with corporate real case scenarios and helps in relating the concepts with whatever real business problems we are trying to solve
I found Dr Pavan Soni’s book “Design your thinking” constantly impresses me, as I have never came across the approach that teaches Design Thinking Methodology (mindset, toolset and skills) with such an ease. The book also provides lots of anecdotes that keeps you engaged
Dr. Pavan Soni is a genius. A must-read book, if you understand the philosophy it may help you think better. Detailed Book Review in the article below: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/design...
Asha Roshini Though the concept of Design Thinking is majorly applied in product innovation; with the introduction of Dr Pavan Soni's book on Design Your Thinking, has brought a different perspective -Human Centricity through Empathy. The layout of the book is well structured by giving a conceptual understanding of basics of need to iterate [How & Why not just limiting to What] through diagrammatic representation and real time case studies, which has been expressed in simple language, similar to a “Story Book”. My experience while reading this book, was more engaging and brought out meaningful insights. In addition, I have personally attended Dr Soni’s session on Design Thinking offered by NHRD, which has provoked my ability to make cognitive decisions based on concepts such as Clear Head [Clarity of Objective], Deep Heart [start with small conversation] & Thick Skin [bringing back to the purpose], Triangulation of thoughts through 5 Ideation Methods, SCQA & the Scale Up Plan. I personally would suggest every individual to pursue this creation “Design Your Thinking” by Dr Soni, which will be useful for your professional & personal endeavours. Above all, I would wish to submit that the personal learnings, I had with Dr Soni has been enriching in terms of his humility, discipline, the creative ability to engage with people of different walks of life either during the classroom sessions or social life. Thank You Sir & wishing you all the Best for your upcoming assignments.
This book is a good attempt at capturing the Design Thinking process in depth, with scripture from Western authors & experts, but coupled with closer-to-home Indian industry examples, that the author experienced as part of his career & educational journey. The many Indian industry examples demonstrate the innovation and creative thinking landscape in the country and represents proud vignettes of international standard of innovation, right here at home. Excellent read and lots of notes to make from this book!
Finally a book on Design Thinking that has so many examples from Indian context. Writing such a book seems natural for Pavan with his vast experience of working with multiple Indian companies. Having seen his sessions personally I can vouch that this book ticks all the expectations on the subject. Impeccable writing style and structure makes the books a worthy long term presence in your bookshelf.
Reviewing the book in the Design Thinking Template as an ode to the Author🙏 Inspire- The book totally inspires by bringing a large collection of cases and examples from small to big(Chuck house to Apple/Tesla), offering a huge variety of Perspectives (was surprised to find Oscar Wilde, Woody Allen and Oprah being referred to in this book) and many quotable quotes from the author(sell the problem before you sell the solution, Ideas are like Lego Blocks......etc) Empathise- Dr. Pavan Soni indeed demonstrates empathy in the way he has accomplished 3 things- 1)Structuring the book in the form of great context to the subject, Discussing each tenet of DT(Design Thinking) with its very specific examples(for mindset & skillsets) and rounding it off with a simple DIY template to make each of us a Design Thinker. 2)Keeping the language simple. 3)Breaking down the examples of the largest of organisations into simple techniques and tools that you and I can practice.👍 Define-Pavan shares very lucidly the nature of problems or situations that are best suited to be addressed by Design Thinking. While building a compelling case for the subject with a comparison with other models.✌️ Ideate-Since this is to encourage the paradigm that no, one, idea is always enough and improvisations are great, Pavan has shared many cases of the growth trajectory of companies(example the Tanishq Story) rather than just success. His own mind map which is a bonus gives an insight on how we can build on our ideas of our world better.👍 Prototype and Test- Pavan just lives this stage by sharing countless examples making it hard for a DT critic to remain cynical about this concept.🤔 Scale- This word could mean numbers or expanded growth but in a DT context it also refers to future proofing your ideas/creations. And Pavan's stories covering many decades definitely makes this book like a lighter version of a Practitioner's Text Book on DT.💁 Overall, a great read for avid readers. And those who are not can still benefit from reading just the last chapter and certain aspects like the start to each chapter. Book hoarder, Book reader or a Book nerd- this book can find a place in your shelf💕
I would like to thank Mr. Pavan for writing this wonderful book “Design Your Thinking” and enunciating many radical thoughts and concepts with brilliant examples. All the chapters & contents in this book are well designed and explained in a meaningful way to help the reader to understand the core concept of design thinking.
After reading this book and understanding the concepts of design thinking, I personally felt like both my professional and personal level decision-making skills are enhanced and more matured. It’s like stimulating both left brain and right brain to generate many ideas and ways to overcome all type of problems also to take a decision in a broader viewpoint. Finally, I would say Everyone must read/ listen to this book.
Design Your Thinking is a fabulous read – well written, easy to comprehend (even for complete beginners to Design Thinking) and at a good pace. What I also loved about the book was that it has numerous instances of successes of Design Thinking in use that helps understand how to apply Design Thinking much better. Great read and looking forward to more book from Dr. Pavan Soni! I have had the good fortune of attending a Design Thinking workshop conducted by Dr. Pavan and it was absolutely enlightening! The book also reflects a lot of his teaching and is a must read for people interested in knowing more about and/or applying Design Thinking!
Design your thinking is an inspiring book which covers various examples in each and every stage of the process (Inspire, Empathize and define, Ideate, Prototype and Test & Scale) and makes the reader understand the process and situations better. I like the way how Design thinking gives prominence to the role of empathy and human centricity for creative problem solving. There are many learnings from the book out of which Brainstorming rules stands out first. The way all the rules are explained and the mistakes we often make in brainstorming is clearly listed and there is an opportunity for improvement for the readers who do it the wrong way. Design Your Thinking is one of the best books I have read so far which offers pointers on skill sets, mindsets and toolsets and makes the reader an efficient problem solver
The book is a powerful practitioner's guide. It provides a lot of insights on how empathy can be engineered and provide solutions to the ultimate user. Appropriate case studies and examples provided to understand the concepts much better. For me it is a book to be referred very often to learn and implement Design Thinking.
The book is one of the best that I read in recent times. It is a Gateway to realms of Innovation, step wise guide to take mindful innovation journey, tips to become Impactful Innovator and how to be a prolific change agent in general. Relevant and touching Real life stories coupled with profound insights stemming from contemporary research and experiences of Dr. Pavan Soni, makes it a book worth reading and sharing.
The book entitled "Design Your Thinking" by Dr. Pavan Soni is excellently written. The language is lucid and Chapterization is apt and adequate. The book contains "frequently asked questions and answers" section which is one of several innovative additions the book has brought about. The conversational style of narration adopted by the author appeals to the readers and keep them engaged. The definition of "Design Thinking" is apt. However, its value would have been still better, had the author gave his interpretations as well. The figures employed as illustrations are very good. Only they should have been little more large and darker. Overall, a must read book for all professionals.
This is a wonderful book , this book contains lots of practical example which is real and practical easy to implement as well as relatable for any age groups person after the completion of the book, I learnt a lot and my entire thought process got changes, The most interesting thing I learnt is quality is comes from quantity.

I strongly recommend this book for all those who want to innovate and are willing to put in their hard work into developing any process or product at any stage for the betterment of the society
Design Your Thinking is an insightful primer into Design Thinking Principles. It is also a handy guidebook for the practice of Design Thinking. It is substantially backed by rigorous research into literature, case studies, and first-hand experience. As a Design Thinking practitioner and trainer, Pavan Soni shares his exhaustive expertise and experience in an easy-to-digest manner. It is useful for a novice as well as an expert.
The structure of the book is well-organized and leads from one concept to another seamlessly. With clear articulation of tools and techniques usable for organisations and individuals, it not only inspires but also provides clarity on actionable steps. The examples from the Indian business scenario fill a considerable gap in literature on this topic, which is skewed towards case studies from the west. For a homegrown entrepreneur and professional, this aspect is especially contextual and useful. I especially liked the consistent examples throughout the chapters and the comprehensive tear-out mind map at the end of the book.
Pavan Soni intends the book to be an independent guide for professionals and individuals to put Design Thinking into practice. It is highly effective for that purpose. However, if a chance presents itself, I will highly recommend readers to experience Pavan’s workshop on Design Thinking. There is no substitute to a hands-on experience with the highly impactful practitioner himself. It is a memorable experience and will only add value to your learning journey.
Pavan Soni's "Design Your Thinking" arrives at a time when the business world is saturated with innovation buzzwords, yet delivers something refreshingly substantial: a grounded, methodical approach to creative problem-solving that transcends the typical startup-centric narrative surrounding design thinking.
What immediately distinguishes this book is Soni's central thesis that creativity and discipline are not opposing forces but complementary partners. This counterintuitive premise that constraints actually enhance rather than stifle innovation forms the backbone of a work that feels both intellectually rigorous and practically accessible. Rather than promoting the myth of the lone creative genius working in unlimited freedom, Soni demonstrates how systematic approaches can unlock creative potential in anyone.
The book's structure mirrors the design thinking process itself, moving seamlessly through the six stages: Inspire, Empathize & Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, and Scale. Each section balances theoretical foundation with actionable frameworks, creating a resource that functions equally well as a learning tool and a reference guide. The visual elements, empathy maps, journey maps, and various thinking frameworks transform abstract concepts into tangible tools that readers can immediately apply.
Perhaps the book's greatest strength lies in its cultural specificity. While design thinking literature often relies heavily on Silicon Valley case studies, Soni enriches his narrative with Indian business scenarios, from Tanishq's brand transformation to Vodafone's memorable ZooZoo campaign. This contextual grounding makes the concepts feel less like imported methodologies and more like adaptable principles that can flourish in diverse environments.
Soni's practitioner voice shines throughout, offering insights that clearly emerge from real-world application rather than academic theorizing. His emphasis on empathy as the foundation of innovation feels particularly urgent in our increasingly disconnected world. The book doesn't just advocate for understanding users or customers; it makes a compelling case for empathy as a fundamental problem-solving skill applicable to everything from product development to personal relationships.
The writing strikes an admirable balance between accessibility and depth. Complex concepts are broken down without being dumbed down, and the numerous examples prevent the content from becoming overly abstract. However, this thoroughness occasionally leads to repetition, particularly around the core themes of discipline and constraint-driven creativity.
Where the book truly excels is in its democratic approach to innovation. Soni convincingly argues that design thinking isn't the exclusive domain of designers or tech entrepreneurs but a mindset and methodology available to anyone facing complex challenges. Whether you're an educator designing curricula, a manager restructuring workflows, or simply someone trying to approach personal problems more systematically, the frameworks translate remarkably well.
The book's treatment of failure as an essential component of the creative process feels both realistic and encouraging. Rather than promoting the "fail fast" mentality as an end in itself, Soni positions failure as valuable feedback that informs iteration and improvement. This nuanced perspective helps readers embrace experimentation without losing sight of ultimate objectives.
"Design Your Thinking" succeeds as both an introduction for newcomers to design thinking and a resource for practitioners seeking to deepen their approach. It's particularly valuable for those working in contexts where resources are limited and stakeholder buy-in must be earned rather than assumed. The book's emphasis on empathy, iteration, and systematic creativity offers a mature alternative to both rigid corporate processes and chaotic brainstorming sessions.
This is not a quick-fix manual promising instant innovation but a thoughtful guide for developing sustainable creative problem-solving capabilities. Soni has created a work that honors the complexity of real-world challenges while providing practical tools for addressing them systematically and empathetically.
For anyone serious about improving their approach to complex problems whether in business, education, or personal life, "Design Your Thinking" offers a valuable roadmap for transforming good intentions into effective solutions.
Why Must You Read? -Get tips right from the master -Not just textbookish ideas but ground realities and practical info -Real life stories and experiences
The primary intent of this book, writes Soni, is to enable a broad-based adoption of design thinking as a human-centric approach to problem-solving, which helps bring discipline to this otherwise chaotic process. The method is as useful for new product development as for everyday problems, including accounts receivable, customer service and employee engagement. If employees can embrace a more systematic posture towards problem-solving, they would greatly be benefited and so would the organizations. The same can be said about personal lives, where a deeper understanding of other people's motivations can greatly help improve relationships.
Soni writes like an adept storyteller, bracketing off the dryness of non fiction from the book. His approach is like that of a creative artist. He shares experiences and anecdotes, bringing stories of other people to the mix. It's a delight reading a non fiction book that is as easy a read as fiction.
The book includes case studies and practical lessons on creativity, innovation and design thinking from companies like 3M, Accenture, Amazon, ANAND Group,Apple, Aravind Eye Hospitals, Asian Paints, Bain & Company, Bigbasket, Biocon to name a few. These stories don't let the narrative become heavy.
The book has a rich compilation of notes and lessons that will definitely make you think differently about the familiar stuff. And all this in an easy going conversational style! These notes are the insights collected and collated over years of observations, conversations and learnings. The learnings in this book have been distilled across markets, practitioners, academics, students, and teachers.
Book Review: Design Your Thinking: The Mindsets, Toolsets and Skill Sets for Creative Problem-solving by Pavan Soni
Design Your Thinking by Pavan Soni is an insightful guide on how creativity and discipline can go hand in hand. The book breaks the myth that innovation is only possible when resources are plenty or talent is extraordinary. Instead, it shows how creativity often thrives in constraints and demands systematic effort.
At the core of the book is design thinking, a method inspired by IDEO and Stanford Soni makes it clear that design thinking is not just for start-ups or product design, but a powerful approach that can be applied to problems in all walks of life. What makes his perspective refreshing is the way he connects mindsets, toolsets, and skill sets into a practical framework for problem-solving.
A central idea in the book is striking the right balance between desirability, feasibility, and viability. As Tim Brown notes, “The willing and even enthusiastic acceptance of competing constraints is the foundation of design thinking.” This balance ensures that solutions are not only human-centered but also technically possible and economically sustainable.
One of my favorite lines from the book is: “An understanding of true desire comes with empathy, where you cut through the clutter of what is said and known to get to people’s motivations and core beliefs.” This captures the heart of design thinking—going beyond what people say they want to discover what they truly value. Through examples like James Dyson’s 5,000 prototypes before creating the bagless vacuum cleaner, Soni highlights the importance of tinkering, persistence, and testing ideas repeatedly. He also emphasizes that clever ideas must make business sense; otherwise, they risk becoming unsustainable.
Overall, Design Your Thinking is more than just a book on innovation. It is a practical manual that encourages readers to think empathetically, act experimentally, and balance creativity with discipline. A must-read for anyone looking to solve problems more effectively, whether in business or daily life.
