We get some more flashbacks showing the fate of Casey Jones and Leo. Tragic battle that was lost. Meanwhile in current times, martial law has been set in motion and our team feels like it’s now or never to strike back. Loving this series.

I don’t know what’s worse: Knowing all of my favorite characters die or seeing them die? Deaths aside, this is a great storyline and the only thing that puts a damper on it is the long delays between issues.

I have to admit this issue dragged a bit more for me, I think it has a lot to do with a ton of characters being introduced from past TMNT lore that I know NOTHING about, lol. So I really hope the target audience was reached here, unfortunately the ambiguous plot points really didn’t do it for me. As we jump onto this issue we take a dip into memory law as we witness the rise of Hiroto on his 16th birthday to the role of leader of the foot clan. It’s been 10 years since the fight between the clans, shown last issue, which left Ralph dead and Hiroto’s mother in a coma. And what is Hiroto’s first act as leader of the clan? To call for peace, war has gone on for too long…or so he says. This moment is in stark contrast to the present day as Hiroto has donned his dictator gowns to address all the citizens of the city in proclaiming the last ronin a terrorist, and in order to weed him out they must enact martial law. Covering the city in even more foot clan than there already was, things just got even worse. Meanwhile down in the sewers Mikey is debating with his brothers, in his own mind of course, about Casey’s offer to have her gang help him take down Hiroto. She’s just a child and couldn’t possibly help, but she does have a very similar story to their own. She has been training her entire life, even if she isn’t a mutant, and she is around the same age. But just then Casey interrupted Mikey’s one sided fight as she actually snuck up on him. She is heading topside to check inner crew but she came to direct Mikey to April as she wants to talk to him.
As Mikey walks into April’s lab the first thing he sees is Fugitoid’s head on full display. This sends him majorly down memory lane to the night of the explosion. The turtles are preparing and heading off for peace talks with the foot clan, keeping in mind what happened 10 years ago, but as splinter and Donnie head off in a cloaked craft he is hopeful that this may finally be an end to the bloodshed. But as they leave we find that their enemy, Baxter Stockman, is once again tracking them and up to his schemes to try and get Fugitoid aka Honeycutt. As he prepares his own strike team to sneak in and take on the turtles in their own lair, armed with their own arsenal of tech and drones…suddenly their entire plan is seemingly hijacker’s by the foot clan! Soldiers start rushing in to take down Stockman’s men as alarms start going up in the sewers. Leo starts organizing a defense as Mikey gets April and Honeycutt to safety. But as they begin to get away Leo is left behind to defend against the invading it clan. But Stockman isn’t done yet, his men may have failed but he is still armed with super robots and tons of mini flying drones (which we saw in the first issue as being utilized by Hiroto now in his tower defenses). As the sewers continue to be blown up from the invading forces, even knocking Honeycutt away, Leo and Casey are the last in the defense…but wooden weapons can only get you so far facing a horde like this. Finally Honeycutt stepped out himself, he knows stockman has come for him and would rather self destruct before he hurts his friends or imprisons him again…stockma decides right there that if he can’t have him no one else can either…so stockman hits the trigger for his entire horde of robots to explode. Destroying the store at Bleecker and Sullivan and only leaving behind Leo’s sword and Casey’s mask in the crater left behind.
As we jump back to the present day Casey has returned to the surface to find chaos everywhere, she is able to meet up with her crew where she finds out about the martial law…only to immediately go on the run as foot clan comes after her group. They are forced to split up and stay on their feet to get to safety, but Casey just can’t help but help others being beaten by the foot clan as she makes her way to safety.
As we junk back to Mikey and April we find out that according to the scans Honeycutt is still perfectly fine inside his damaged head…he is just laying dormant as somehow Stockman found a way to track him and turning him on would send a signal out alerting the bad guys to their location. But what’s more important to Mikey now, remembering back to that day, is what happened to April. After the explosion she woke up a week later to find she lost her husband, her friends, her arm and her leg…and she was majorly pregnant. She spent a lot of time in the hospital doing lots of physical and mental therapy as the foot clan took control of New York. When she was finally discharged, alongside her child, she moved down to the lair, surrounding herself with everything she had left to remember the ones she lost. Some of Casey and Leo’s strike team who survived the battle found Fugitoid’s head and recovered it. Unfortunately most of those guys are dead after fighting Hiroto’s forces, and the few that are left are commanding underground resistance in other parts of the city. But now that April has shared some of her story she is interested in Mikey’s. Like how he possibly got from NYC to Japan after the explosion. Mikey explains that it’s mostly a fog to him as well, the last thing he remembered was trying to get them to safety and then the explosion throwing him across the neighborhood. When he finally woke up he found the store gone and figured everyone was with it, so he wandered in a haze until he went back to the sewers where he tried calling Donnie and Splinter, as we still don’t know what happened to them, but got nothing back. He grabbed skin gear and retreated from the lair, stowing away on a plane to Japan in the hopes of reaching them and warning them before the “peace” talks. Mikey started to get a bit choked up at this moment, he just didn’t know what else to do and April assures him that it wasn’t his fault. He’s dealing with survivor’s guilt and she has felt plenty of it the same. He can’t change what happened, but that doesn’t mean he has to accept what’s happening now and April actually has an idea on how to beat Hiroto using Honeycutt. There are a few other ears interested in that plan, as Casey and her crew finally catch up to the safety of the sewers. April and Mikey are shocked to see them bloody and cut up, a small bit of the unknown hell on the surface has shown itself to them, and it’s just getting started.
Speaking on unknown hell, we shift over to find Hiroto standing on the roof of a building. While it’s raining, in nothing. It a cloak and really tight pants as he yells about being god incarnate…until finally shifting back to his mommy issues as he’s been left alone in charge of an empire for most of his life after his mother went comatose. It actually seems like a part of him wanes nothing to do with this, that this life was thrust upon him…but then the egotistical part of himself that believes he is begged than everyone else comes back to the forefront as he’s yells about rising to find his own path. As he’s is prancing around the rooftops he suddenly falls and catches himself on a cable for a moment before it snaps, but he even claims he will not die today as just like a god he is immortal and his angels won’t allow him to die. But angels, in this case, he seems to mean a few giant robotic arms which plucked him out of the sky before falling to his death…which actually brings us to April’s plan…breaking into the fortress and activating Honeycutt to utilize him to shut down all the Stockman tech Hiroto uses to protect himself. Mikey is unsure, for some reason he doesn’t like adding billion to one shots to his already suicidal lone wolf act, but April calms him down and takes him aside. She assures him that Honeycutt could work and she has been prepping for this for a long time, so she has another surprise for him…!9!3 other than a new and improved TMNT truck/makeshift tank to rip into action with…hitting shelves near you, lol. I don’t see how a cool big truck takes away from Mikey’s point that getting Casey and the rest of the kids involved in this fight is a bad idea as he doesn’t want to see them die…but the truck is pretty cool.

Still good series
Great series continues. I’d say 60% of what I like is art and design and 40% story overall. In this issue more like 70% art 30% story, just because there is so little story.
The aesthetic is absolutely beautiful, some of the best in comics I’ve seen. Emotion and action are reflected so well in the style. They could even rely more heavily on wordless panels for emotional communication and save dialogue space if they wanted.
The narrative moving forward is fairly by-the-numbers. Nothing surprising. Did not need the two pages or so of the big baddie singing his own praises from a rooftop repeating the same things we’ve seen him saying every issue. Also they make a weird choice to cut away from an exposition conversation only to cut back immediately and have Mikey relate all the exposition that just happened in a “so what you’re saying is…”
The flashbacks are a little more interesting then the moving forward, which concerns me as we are 3 into a 5 issue run. Very little hope that much resolution will happen in this first five.
They DO make a rather brilliant artistic choice to put the more exposition-heavy flashbacks into wonderful wood-cut style panels on one page. It’s quite beautiful.
Still recommend and I’ll keep going. Largely for the art design which I cannot say enough good things about.

I have really been enjoying this series, and as always will try to review spoiler free.
This was the weakest issue so far for me. The art was still top, and the dialogue was great. The development of the story is keeping my interest. My favourite character was featured last issue, so I wasn’t expecting as much of an emotional impact with this one but I really didn’t like how it was handled. There were aspects of it I loved! Very heroic and it’s probably just my personal preferences.

The weakest chapter so far in the series. Spends a lot of time setting up a pending conflict while giving a pretty boring end to a pair of characters. I'll see it through to the end, but this was the worst so far.

Loved the back story and flashback.
I'm loving every issue of this series. I never thought April would be the tech wizard. I can't wait to see what's next. And of course Oroku is a crazy as can be. I fully recommend

Although I know that their aren’t mutant turtles walking around today the biggest plot hole must be April get rehab and therapy after getting blown up by the new leaders of the city. Why was she not immediately arrested

Now we wait...
I always knew Leonardo and Casey would make the best stand. Even Valhalla will stand in awe. Now I just have to wait another year.

The story was good to start, but mostly to satisfy my nostalgia, by book three I was pretty bored. And there are 7 in the series, not five.

A bit of a step down from the previous issue, but still solid. I am warming up to the Escorzas, but I still prefer Ben Bishop's art.

This is too much a typical middle issue. Too much exposition, too much history, not enough action going forward. But I'm confident it's going to get better. And soon.
