Unleashed: The Acts Church Today

Rate this book
The early church spread with remarkable speed, impelled by joy, urgency, profound compassion, and the day-to-day experience of working in the power of the Holy Spirit. Despite opposition at all levels, the first Christians expressed their love and wonder in acts of kindness, worship, and their eagerness to share the good news of the risen Jesus. Gavin and Anne Calver explore what this extraordinary historical account means for believers today, The Holy Spirit in the life of the church; taking risks; living together in the power of the Spirit; works and wonders; hearing from God; responding to the call of God; miracles then and now.

Strong on enthusiasm for the things of the Spirit, weak in a clear theology and ecclesiology on how it all works.

Unleashed is really the personal testimony of Gavin and Ann Calver's experience and their desire to see the traditional denominational church released in ministry, miracles and evangelism, as described in the NT book of Acts.

However, the book is weak on any clear strategy on how such a NT church model can be established, vague on any practical ideas on pastoral leadership, and totally lacking on any theological understanding on ecclesiology in a post modernist age.

However, such glearing omissions, can be forgiven for their obvious enthusiasm in wanting to be used by God to find a new expression of church in the 21st century.

This is a book that is ripe for the time, the call that runs through is "Wake up! Don't miss what God is doing in your midst."

Gavin and Anne Calver do a good job of bringing to home the stories in Acts of the first century church. These are not just stories of the far flung past, nor are they a dead account of "how it all got started," it is OUR story, and it is very much still going on.

Worth grabbing a few copies, reading it in community and really delving into the reflection and response questions. What is God up to in our midst? Where is God inviting us to change and live differently?

Anne and Gavin write with passion and deep truth. This is a book packed full of wisdom, deeply rooted in Scripture that will fire you up and leave you hopeful and excited about the future of the church.

It is also deeply challenging and will make you uncomfortable about the status quo.

I loved it and encourage you to grab a copy and put it into practice.

A must read for anyone who loves the church, this book will fill you with a passion for the church today that you may not have had, and remind you how we may have strayed away from the early church and how it was meant to be.
