After their harrowing journey to escape persecution, Silas, Zack, Hilde, and Zoe have found a sense of belonging in Sanctuary, a mountain refuge for scaled hybrids. But "lizard-hating" vigilantes threaten their security. Lonely and confined, Zoe ventures outside the protective walls of the compound, eager to find friendship like a normal girl. As she nears puberty, she is torn by a painful choice. Should she accept the onset of the glittering scales and come to resemble everyone she loves? Or should she get the vaccine that will block her transformation and allow her to be accepted in the outside world?
J.T. Ashmore is a fiction writer, poet, college professor, and editor. When not writing, Ashmore enjoys painting, reading, and exploring the Loess Hills that border the Missouri River.
So happy when I found the new Deep Skin book dropped, and I was not disappointed by Volume 2. Imagine a world where a virus spreads rapidly, but the rural townsfolk don’t trust the government created vaccine. Ashmore is able to tap into real fears on all sides of an evolving situation, with the perfect blend of action and some more tender moments. It’s bittersweet to know there is only one more adventure left, but count me in for Book 3.
