I never expected to discover that I was a witch—one being hunted by a demon. I’d taken down the demon but the price I paid was high—I lost both my best friend and the man I loved. Now all I want is to leave magic far behind . . .
Maggie Lachlan is the Techwitch. A computer whisperer, able to bring recalcitrant systems to their knees with a single keystroke. But now she knows she is more than a geek, she’s an actual witch as well. But magic has brought only pain and for the last nine months she’s been mourning her losses and ignoring her powers.
But when her ex, Damon Riley, reappears in her life, bringing in his wake a magical mystery, she will need every ounce of her computer mojo and her magic. Trouble is, she seems to have lost both. And without magic, she’s vulnerable to the kind of control demons like to wield.
With a curse to unravel and a demon’s revenge to avoid, Maggie needs to find her power and save the day and Damon. Because sticks and stones can break your bones but, when it comes to magic, words can be deadly...
An exciting dark and sexy futuristic urban fantasy series from M.J. Scott, RITA® Award nominated author of the Half-Light City series, the Four Arts series and The Wild Side Series.
M.J Scott is a RITA® Award nominated author. She is an unrepentant bookworm. Luckily she grew up in a family that fed her a properly varied diet of books and these days is surrounded by people who are understanding of her story addiction. When not wrestling one of her own stories to the ground, she can generally be found reading someone else’s. Her other distractions include yarn, cat butlering, dark chocolate and fabric. She lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Maggie Lachlan is the Techwitch who might have lost her mojo. Yet magic has caused her great loss and a demon is still hunting her, determined to suck her powerful energy dry. Strange emails bring her sexy ex, Damon Riley back into her life, and it only gets more dangerous from there. To figure out her problem and his, she needs to get her magic back, but there's not as easy as it sounds. Will Maggie be able to find her magic in time to save not only herself and Damon but the world as well?
Another great book in this urban fantasy series. The world building is widening slowly, and I do like the slow unveiling of the US west coast in that not so distant future. More so, I love finding out more about Cestis, the witches' policing organization, especially when secret libraries are involved! Maggie had withdrawn from the world after the devastation of what happened in the last book, and she's still suffering panic attacks and PTSD. There's no time for her to step into things slowly now, though. Fantastic action and more sizzle between her and Damon. They have their own issues to work out along with trying to stay alive. I can't wait to find out what happens next!
I am a fan of M. J. Scott's Four Arts and Shattered Court series. This series has a totally different feel to it.
This is the 2nd book and you do need to start with book #1 to understand what is going on. Maggie is a witch who isn't trained in her powers and hasn't been able to access her power for the last 9 months. Damon is the wealthy man who broke her heart when he walked away. When he found out she was a witch he didn't want to have anything to do with her anymore. This book finds Maggie trying to pick up the pieces of her life and move forward. Her plan is going well until Damon stops by her house and tells her he is being sent threats that appear to come from Maggie.
I really wanted to like this book. I like the premise of the near future with some advanced technology and also magic roving around as well. The first 1/2 of the book was just so slow for me. I had a hard time engaging with Maggie in her ignorance and pity party that has gone on for 9 months! There is also some repetition of information sprinkled throughout that was annoying. There was also lots of "wheel spinning" characters having conversations or doing things that didn't really lead to anything productive at all. The last 1/4 of the book was great! There was movement with the characters relationships as well as action in the overall story line. It just took soooo long to get there! I like the overall concept of the series so I will pick up the next book and hope for the best.
Nine months after the events in Wicked Game, Maggie is still coming to terms with what happened to her. Losing her best friend, and the man she loved has left scars, ones that hurt even more when Damon steps back into her life.
Unfortunately for Maggie, her magic is on the fritz, and someone seems to be after her, or Damon— she’s not sure which!
It’s definitely repercussions from the demon though, and she’s determined to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.
This book is a continuation of the story from book one, so it’s not a standalone, and picks up where that book left off. It’s a good few months later, and Maggie is still dealing with her feelings over Nat’s death. She’s also trying to deal with the knowledge of what her mother did, where she fits in the magical world, and how her romance with Damon just fell apart, so it’s not really surprising that it has taken her so long to actually come out of her grieving cave.
She’s strong enough to try and pick up the pieces, and face things head on (however reluctantly she may do so), and I enjoyed watching her finally take herself in hand.
This was a fast paced story, with a lot of action and adventure. There are some steamy scenes, maybe a very small bit of groveling (could have been more, but there was definitely at least one thing that made the “more” not necessary), and we get to meet a few intriguing new characters.
This is a great read for urban fantasy lovers, as well as paranormal or futuristic fantasy/sci-fi fans.
Urban romantic fantasy in a future Bay Area where tech and magic co-exist uneasily, a bit more Berkeley than SF, but still fun to visit. A quick and easy read and a bit better than book 1 in the series in my opinion - or better yet, just treat this as the second half of the same book ;) I would definitely not read this as a standalone. I like the world M.J. Scott is building and would be happy to visit again.
I am so hooked on this series. The second book doesn't disappoint. Maggie is a great character. She is smart, very tech savvy & also a witch. After the split up with Damen in book 1, Maggie has lost her mojo and she has lost her magic. Then to make matters worse Damen shows up after 9 months. He tells her he is receiving death threats & his tech team says it traces to her. Of course she is innocent but now she has to be careful as she tries to clear her name. She still has imps popping up & attacking her. Maybe her demon is still trying to get her powers. A great story.
The overall story arch is good in my opinion but I find the romance piece to be frustrating. The author allowed this MMC to break the FMC’s heart and have no contact with her for how long before coming back into her life. He should’ve had to work a little harder to earn her trust and affection back.
Maggie is still reeling from the revelations at the end of book 1.
She is a witch. Her mother bound her to a demon. Her best friend is dead. The love of her life doesn't want her.
Burying herself in renovations to her house, denial seems to be working out well for her, until ex-boyfriend Damon Riley comes looking for her help again.
My first thought after finishing this was, literally, “Ew.” And yes, I said it out loud.
Do I need to add anything else? Probably not.
Need an example? Try this gem:
“You are a witch. My witch. I love you. And your fight is my fight. I am Team Maggie. Team Magic.” See? What in the cheesy, sickly sweet hell is this? Nope. Just nope.
I read it quickly and enjoyed it. It’s just that deliberately drawn out miscommunications for angst happens so often in romance it’s really annoying. A little too much contrived angst for another star on the rating. Still can’t put it down and I will be reading the next book in the series.
Loved this book this series has so much in it and more can't wait to read more about Maggie and Damon if you are a gamer paranormal demon love kind of reader this is your series
Excellent. One problem though. The heroin was working for another company, which needed her to find out what was wrong with their system, and she was running out of time. It wasn't mentioned again unless it pops up in the next book!
Great second book to what feels like a really great series! Reading this book reminded me how much I like M.J. Scott, which lead to a lost weekend of devouring another couple books from the author. Do yourself a favor and start following M.J. Scott!
The whole relationship thing dragged on a little too far and got tiresome BUT the story was interesting and I’m starting to really like Lizzy. I have to admit I didn’t expect the bad guy to be who it was so that was a pleasant surprise.
