Just as Seungho is riveted by Na-kyum's work, I found myself absolutely mesmerized by the gorgeous art in the webcomic Painter of the Night, as well as the surprisingly layered story of a noble determined to offer his patronage to a young artist - whether the latter wants it or not.
I have found myself reading the dozen chapters available repeatedly and I can't help stopping and just gazing at the characters. It wasn't even about the sexual encounters. Rather, the artist captures expressions and emotions with such realism that I can't help but start trying to translate the sentiments that haven't been stated outright in dialogue.
The only frustration I've had so far is not with the comic at all, but rather with readers who would immediately compare Seungho with Killing Stalking's Sungwoo - a character that I happen to absolutely loathe. While both males do lack empathy and have a casual disregard for the value of human life, Killing Stalking focuses on a serial killer, which is a completely different sort of dark male lead.
In comparison, Painter of the Night focuses on Seungho, a noble who uses his power and privilege to pursue a homosexual hedonistic life regardless of social mores of the period. Na-kyum's naivete and idealism acts as a foil to throw Seungho's deviant tendencies into stark relief. Seungho is driven and willing to kill to achieve his goals, especially since society gives him the authority and power to do just that. Currently, he is more of a ridiculously charismatic and dangerous antagonist than a romantic male lead, though his frequent nudity does help convince us otherwise.
As we watch Seungho pinpoint Na-kyum's weakness and use a carrot and stick approach to get him to paint, it is very interesting to watch the young artist's moral conflict in regards to his own work, his sexuality and his unlikely patron. In that regard, it is surprising how much detail the author is able to imbue in a couple panels and how a single hand motion or gesture can reveal so much about a character's personality and motivation. Revisiting chapters helped me notice subtle movements that I completely missed the first time.
Ultimately, this is gorgeous piece of work with surprisingly layered storytelling and characters. It manages to focus on very human expressions of lust and love in historical times while also revealing the social power structures and value systems of people of the period. Highly recommended.
Oh.my.gosh. The love interest is a narcissistic & psychotic rapist who physically abused the MC multiple times. I understand that BL tends to have a lot of alpha males because it's appealing, but this guy has no redeeming character.
It’s no Killing Stalking, but I still loved it and can’t wait for the next chapter. I’m Lowkey a little sad that I got into this before the series finished so I could binge more 🥲
also why are his eyes so…. peculiar…., like its giving blue eyed people but his are somehow red—never open them again. and, i frankly dont get the art glaze like seungho-or-whateverhisnamewas is honestly so chopped, got jumpscared everytime i saw a panel like not even face card saving his sorry ass
The author sets a realistic tone for the time period. The eldest son of a noble becomes obsessed with a young painter. They are on opposite spectrums so it’s interesting to see their interactions. The main noble is mentally unstable so some readers should beware. There is violence involved. However, you can see why the noble depends so much on the young painter as we learn more about his past. The story is complex and interesting so it is not just for smut.
It's important to note that low-borns (as they were called back then) were not treated very well. I can see some people were complaining about this but this was sadly the case back then. It gets way better as you go along.
i was gonna churn out a whole-ass essay but then i remembered that i hate writing essays so im not gonna.
painter of the night started out with a candid look on the society of the late joseon, the cruelty and injustice of its hierarchies, and then! then, it decided to devolve into a soap opera. idk maybe it was always supposed to be this way (in which case pardonnez-moi for getting a touch complex and emotional here) but for a minute it felt like byeonduck had something different in mind.
i honestly think it had the potential to stand on an equal ground with the disgustingly brilliant fever dream of a thriller that was Killing Stalking. but imagine for a second that KS didn't end the way it did. imagine instead that sangwoo saw the error of his ways, professed his undying love for bum and they moved to usa, got married and settled in a suburban mcMansion with a white picket fence, three pomeranians and an adopted kid from a third world country. i mean...the horror!
but thats what happens with painter of the night, more or less. so lets crack open a bottle of sparkly water and mourn the masterpiece that never happened.
I just finished the next seasons and what should I do now? 😭😭😭😭😭😭
My poor baby Kyum what has been done to you ................
Well this was certainly....something.
I thought it would be different tbh. I didn't read the blurb but it turns out it's full of noncon which you know.... hmmm
I found myself intrigued to see where it goes. Yoon was an asshole for the whole manhua but you could also feel something changing in him, however small.
I don’t understand the hype around this. The relationship is abusive and toxic, involves rape and other non consensual sexual activities. Not to mention the story glorifies abuse. The only good thing about this was the art, which sadly was wasted on such a story...
3.5 Stars-Historical setting, beautiful artwork, interesting story and delectable smut……
I think If I start putting TW for this one, I need at least half a page. But, thankfully when I am in the mood for something particular nothing triggers me.😂😂
Na-kyum is so lovable and not to say our lord Seungho is hateful but the dynamics between them is intriguing. And not to forget the artwork is so beautiful.
this is inspirational story, it defines love is not about the gender we are free to love at all just dont pass the limit that you can hurt the people you love emotionally, physically but ofcourse you can hurt when you love people because thats what love is, it inspires people that who is affraid to love by their same gender and afraid of people judgment but we are all afraid to those people so i want to read this badly
Yeah saw a picture of the main character floating around and decided to give this webtoon a try.
The story is a MM historical "romance". It's dark and non-con/ dubious con adult read--but I will also say that I love the art, and flew through the story thus far
TikTok got me doing things I never thought I would do. When I was a preteen I tried to get into BL cuz my friends liked it, but I couldn’t enjoy it... now? Oh boi how the turn tables.
I know Seungho is an absolute douche but there’s something about him that has me like GAGAUDUWJAH. Nakyum is a cinnamon roll, so beautiful and sweet, I often wind up thinking that he’s a girl.
Like, you know that the premise of the series is wrong and kinda really fucked up, but the art is SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL that you can't look away??? like... Na-Kyum is just.... SO PRETTY. A kiss for his forehead and for his trauma, and I'm nervous as to where this series will go. 💔
[CW:TW // Rape - non consensual (a TON and I mean a TON of this) and abuse. Please do not read if you are faint of heart. The story itself needs warnings but since they don’t provide any I’ll add some here for anyone interested.]
Seungho Yoon is a fucking psychotic narcissist AND part time rapist WTH! Although I wish I could beat his head in with a bat while spitting in his food I know that all these characters aren’t so one dimensional. BUT HOLY CRAP DOES THIS MAKE HIM ALMOST COMPLETELY UNREDEEMABLE!!!! I fought my way through this one because of all of the good reviews I’ve heard over the last few months. So far, Nakyum is such a puppy and I love him! We have to cherish our little Nakyum Baek with all our hearts! I’m ready to go to war for this little one!
With all that being said the art is ethereal and breathtaking and the story itself has so much potential its off to a pretty strong and unique start. The characters seem so complexed and hurt but refuse to acknowledge their own damaged hearts. It’s hot (in more ways then one but more so controversially hot then anything) , it’s SPICEY, it’s gruesome. Read at your own risks babes.
I am really enjoying this webtoon so far. It's not for everyone due to it's very dark nature. However, there is something really different here. The author strikes me as very talented for what she has shown here.
not everyone's cup of tea for sure🚫 4 stars for now since its still on going.. the art and character's expression is definitely top notched it's as if they are really alive. looking forward with the relationship development between the main characters. i like Yoon Seungho's level of madness here.
