You Are the Girl for the Job: Daring to Believe the God Who Calls You

Rate this book
You believe (or want to believe) God has called you and given you purpose, but where do you start? How do you get from feeling stuck to making a move? If this sounds familiar, bestselling author Jess Connolly has a message for you: 'YOU ARE THE GIRL FOR THE JOB'.

But this is not simply a peppy catchphrase. This is the straight-up truth God has proclaimed over your life from the beginning, and it's not dependent on what you can do or achieve but based on His power, capacity, and character.

It has taken one million, maybe one zillion (who knows?!), slight moves of His hand to place you in this exact moment. So forget about fear and second-guessing your gifts, because God has meticulously prepared you to be an ambassador for the Kingdom right where you are, here and now. Life is too short to get stuck in a holding pattern of shame, self-doubt, and comparison. So let this book be your very good news: you don't have to wait for permission when you've already been commissioned.

With passion and heart-pumping hope, Jess shows that being the girl for the job doesn't depend on your capacity. Rather, it has everything to do with God's capacity and our willingness. It has everything to do with believing we are who God says we are, and quieting any inferior word spoken against us. Are you ready?

Let this audiobook be your jumpstart into confident, purposed living, as Jess walks you through the six steps she has used to coach and encourage women for years: set your focus, take stock of the story that has shaped you, face your fear, catch the vision, make a plan, and finally, make your move - all in the bold belief that God has called you to every step of the journey.

Too many books I read make me feel insignificant or like I am not doing enough as a stay at home mom. They make me feel like I should have a side gig, I should be busting my butt working harder to do more, be more. You Are The Girl For The Job is not like that. This book is encouraging, this book is a dose of truth, and this book helps you see that God has a purpose and a mission for your life right where you’re at with your specific skills with your unique character. She reminds you that you already have an audience, even if you don’t realize it. There are always people that you can be reaching with the message that God has placed on your heart. She pounds home the truth that you were “placed here on purpose for the good of others and the glory of God.” It is a simple truth, but it is one that was easily forgotten in my past. It will not be easy for me to forget anymore. Jess has written this truth on my heart, while also giving me actionable steps to implement missional living in my life. If you feel like you need a guidebook to: leaning into your gifts, using what you’ve got, relying totally on God’s provision, fighting fear, taking the first step, and declaring yourself THE GIRL FOR THE JOB, then this book is 110% for you.

“You are the girl for the job, but not every job.” I shared this quote on social media before I started reading You are the Girl for the Job. The quote resonated with me on so many levels - I’m slowly learning to focus my time on what matters most, and that means saying no quite often now. This book connected the dots of why our no’s are sometimes more important than our yeses. I love how Jess says, “We can’t go back and recreate moments. Don’t miss moments because your focus is on the wrong things.”

God wants to use us all, but we have to let Him do the heavy lifting. We have to believe that He is who He says His, while believing we are who He says we are.

This book dives into women, our fears, our exhaustions, our need for perfection, and our desire for approval. It holds the stories, resources, and God’s word for how we can combat these overwhelming feelings of not being who God says we are. It gives us courage to love ourselves and others regardless of our past, regardless of our sins, and regardless of our brokenness.

It was, indeed, no accident that I opened this book in my current season. It was filled with exactly the right encouragement that I needed to dive deeper into God’s plan for my life and my gifts.

Jess Connolly’s precious release, Dance Stand Run was amazing, her co-written book Wild & Free was great, and it is clear God has not only gifted her as a writer, but also with such relevant words to write, this book included.
As much as I agree with the messages in this book (relying on God’s equipping than our own “qualifiedness”, bringing Him glory with our gifts and not for our own recognition, realizing we will have times when we may fail but that’s okay, obeying His lead, believing in what He says about us rather than the world’s opinion or even our own, etc.), I did feel like there was quite a bit of repetition. That could have been purposeful on Jess’ part, I don’t know, and it took about 60 pages in before it finally felt meaty.
I, personally, am not a fan of The Message (which is a pastor’s paraphrasing of the Bible), let alone it being used as a translation, and Jess, like many others, uses it frequently. I’d much rather have actual translations of Scripture referenced, like ESV or New King James (NKJV). However, I do appreciate that she capitalizes pronouns when referring to God and Christ; this shows reverence and there’s a surprising amount of Christian authors who don’t do this.
So aside from some points and phrases being repeated throughout and her choice of using The Message paraphrase, I do love her heart and her voice. I agree with her wholeheartedly that all of us are the girl or guy for the job, not because of anything we have or can do on our own, but because as Christian believers we are called by an incredible God, filled with His Holy Spirit, and who bestows His capability within us to live on mission.

If you ever doubt that God has placed you where you are despite your disqualifications or fears, this book will remind you that you are the girl for the job because God does not makes mistakes and He uses every season for your good and His glory. Therefore, you can trust that He will see you through whatever you are facing because it is by His power and through Jesus that we are more than conquerors and the victory is ours. Amen.

This book y'all. It's everything I needed to hear to proceed boldly into the next season of ministry that we are being called to. It has it all; honesty and conviction of weakness, but it is so bound up and covered in the grace and power of Christ. It leaves no excuses, because our potential doesn't depend on our capacity, it depends on our God, and His capacity is infinite. What reassurance. I know myself too well to think that I am capable of great things that are always consistent with who He says I am. What freedom that He is God. I love that He has made each of us to reflect differing parts of Himself, as Jess writes, "And He never, ever passes by brokenness in order to play with the more manageable kids on the playground." As a recovering goody two shoes, I need those words. Jess says, "We’re missing our chance because we’re too caught up in our own lives and in the fear that we’ll do it wrong." Let's stop missing our chances, draw near to God, be ready to apologize, and get after it Girls! We are the Girls for the Job!

Did not finish - I got the gist of her message in the first few chapters, then it just felt like it was repeating itself. I’m sure for someone that struggles with knowing the truth, that they are a perfect creation by God to fulfill an amazing plan that he has for them, this book would be perfect. But the message was redundant for me. I quit with 4 chapters left, I couldn’t push through anymore

From start to finish, this book was packed with Scripture teaching, empathy, encouragement, and calling us up as sisters in Christ - equipped, already enough and never too much. Jess Connolly invites you into large parts of her testimony and uses her giftings in teaching the Word of God to call women out of fear and hiding, and into the abundant, equipped life God has for His daughters. What resonated with me the most was the chapter(s) on fear. It is such a stronghold of unbelief and the way Jess packs SO many bright truths straight from the Word with such conviction made me think long after the book was through. This book not only provides a call to Biblical literacy in laying hold of our inheritance and standing as daughters of God, but a bolstering balm of truth to the reader, wherever she may find herself, so that she can taste and see that the Lord is good - and that He made her, the girl for the job.

Such a powerful book. It's one I want to give to every woman who's wondering if God can use her, whether there's a call on her life. I listened to the audiobook (such fun as the author narrated it so I could hear her heart in the words) and now I'll dig through the paperback I already owned. Rich with wisdom, honesty, and vulnerability. But even more the pages are FILLED with passion for women to take their place alongside God as He works through them to reach the world.

In a culture full of self-help books that give a lot of personal advice and little scripture base for foundation, You Are The Girl for The Job weaves both beautifully.
You Are The Girl For The Job pushes you to step into your calling without touting that "you are great and perfect and no one can tell you otherwise." I recommend it wholeheartedly!

this was such an encouraging, helpful, and gospel centered read! It was great for me at a time in my life when my next steps are uncertain, knowing I can step confidently into the plan God has for me not because of my capability but because of HIS.

This message was so timely for me, but I firmly believe it is a timely message for any woman, no matter where she is on her journey. This entire book is so Spirit focused. Jess speaks life over you, reminding you that "you are the girl for the job"... What job? Whatever role it is that you find yourself in or called to, because as Christians, it isn't even US who does the job, but God working through us. I read an advanced readers copy of this book but I honestly can't wait to read it again when I get my physical copy (with a group of women!!). I feel so freed up and empowered to step into the roles I find myself in, as well as any new ones that may come, relying on the Spirit to work through me and feeling safe in God's unrelenting love and grace.

I struggle to believe that God can use me in any capacity because I’m always hung up on what I lack. And all these self-help books today? They don’t help. They hype up my pride but don’t speak truth into my identity in Christ and His capacity to do a work in me and through me because He is GOD & He is ABLE. In this book Jess pulls no punches in speaking truth about how we are women after God’s heart (not our own) & how He equips us in our calling to step up to the plate and be confident that we, the broken daughters of God, can be USED for His Kingdom & His glory wherever He has called us. If you’re tired of the world’s POV on this topic of tackling the world but you want to be a woman with a fire in her belly living life for God in abundance THIS is your book.

LOVE. I loved this book. It is beautiful and encouraging and REAL. It's filled with Scripture and takes the focus off of US and puts it on Jesus. We are the girls for the job because we followers of Christ have the Spirit. We can function out of, as Jess says, "His power, capacity, and character."

I loved this message. I loved her stories. I loved the humility she shared with. I didn't feel preached at. I felt loved and seen and spurred on.

Great book for ANY WOMAN who is more focused on her own weakness than the strength and power of the God who loves her and wants to use her. Another awesome book, Jess :) Such a fan of you.

It’s sometimes simply impossible to review a book on its literary merits when reading it has has a significant personal impact, and that is my experience with this book. I picked it up to use up an audiobook credit having seen it on social media, and I now feel like I need a hard copy to highlight and flag! As well as addressing some issues that I have been wrestling with, there were times when the book spoke directly to things I had been chatting to God about. So the fact that it is easy to listen to, with plenty of relevant illustrations and appropriate biblical passages, is neither here no there, I’m just so glad I heard/read it!

Ever feel like you've been holding your breath for a really, really long time?...waiting for courage and confidence to do the thing, to be the person, or to reach for the goal that God has asked of you. You Are the Girl for the Job, invites us in. It's that small breath of fresh air, that just might allow your spirit to catch wind. God has placed us where we are, as who we are, for a purpose. His purpose. Read it and be reminded of just how unique our God is, in each and every one of our stories...how His capacity conquers fears and makes way for our abundance!

This book could not be more timely. Another great read suggested by my coach, Alicia Byers, that is truly for every single woman as we are all called to do things that may initially be met with doubt, fear and never ending questions. This book almost walks you through the different stages of thoughts that will go through your mind throughout your life and the different life stages you go through. Highly recommend :)

Good book for any woman who feels afraid or unsure of what God has called them to or doubts that the Lord has called them at all. There is was a big focus on how God is the MC of the story anyway, and simple, practical advice about getting started and how to continue within community with others with whatever God has called you too (whether that’s ministry, motherhood, corporate work, etc)

Note: at times I struggle with the way things are written for or toward women, especially with Christian books. Listening to the audiobook occasionally helped me connect better as I could then imagine the author speaks and apply that to the book itself.

The author, Jess Connolly, provided practical guidance and next steps to further the readers connection with God and their purpose. I highlighted so many sections in this week. My favorite chapter was the chapter talking about vision and directly asking God to provide vision and guidance for my life. I find myself making deliberate changes in my life after reading the book.

At this point I don't think there is such a thing as a bad Jess Connolly book. I love her style, it feels like sitting down at the kitchen table with a dear friend.
This book was encouraging and inspiring, and made me want to draw closer to God.
Also the audio book was read by the author, which was epic!

Set my eyes back on God and successfully reinstalled confidence to do what I want to do for Him because it will fill me with even more joy than I could possibly imagine rather than when I do things just to be the best (which is not possible).

I needed this so bad and I think every woman alive needs it! Jess so sincerely manages to break you, wake you, and get you moving. She is transparent and relatable, sharing so many great lessons and reminders. Takeaway: It’s our weaknesses and humanity that qualify us as being the girls for the job.

I listened to the audiobook and it definitely reminded me a bit of Rachel Hollis’s books except this book is more inclusive, less preachy, and more focused on Jesus than I find Rachel Hollis’s books to be. I enjoyed hearing the author tell her story. God does indeed have people where they are at in life for a reason and we should use the time we are given doing our best to lead the life He calls us too. The author said it best that so often we already have the answers to many of life’s questions inside of us and we just need someone to ask the hard questions to seek the answers within.

I ordered this book on a whim, having seen it on Amazon many times, and WOW am I glad I did! I think I wrote “Yes!” or “Wow!” at least once or twice on every page. In a world of self-help and self-empowerment books this is like a breath of fresh air that flips all of those books on their head.

The message here: YOU ARE THE GIRL FOR THE JOB, not because you are awesome and flawless (you aren’t nor are you ever going to be), but because of who God is. We can take ourselves out of the running for trying to be the best, and can walk confidently where we are, in triumph and struggle and weakness and courage alike, knowing God has called us to be right where we are. We can own our strengths, our weaknesses, our fears, our vision, etc...

It’s worth noting that Jess writes in a very authentic and honest way so it feels like you’re sitting in the room with her. I appreciate the way she shares both her past and current struggles/failures, not white-washing anything to make herself look more “qualified”.

I wish I could send this book to every woman I know. And I wish I could be her friend in real life.

2021 Review (Update): I re-read this book long before I ever thought I would. I read it last year during the pandemic and I felt it was good encouragement for what to do with life "after." After? Whatever. At any rate, life never slows down and is always changes and there are always new challenges and I found myself in need of a good pep talk and a reminder that God made ME to face the challenges directly in front of myself. He won't leave me or leave me lacking when I need Him. He gave me gifts and talents specifically related to the circumstances I face and I can see them but I sort of needed (need!) a friend behind me cheering me on and so I read this book again. And I changed it to a 5-star read because Connolly's voice was exactly what I needed to encourage me to stand up, dust off and press on.

****

2020 Review: I can't say that I always appreciated Connolly's reading voice but I DID appreciate this book on the whole. This was a title I picked up to glean from and glean from it I did. It's not a scholarly book by any stretch of the imagination but it is packed full of scripture to direct, advise and encourage you to look at you life and follow hard after God, even if you're scared to do what He's asked of you. I read this book during quarantine, a period of time where I feel like we're afforded the opportunity to slow down and take stock, if you will, of our lives. This book provided some good food for thought as I questioned what I've accomplished in life for and with the Lord and what tasks He is presenting me with for the future. I especially appreciated how much Connolly addresses fear of man in this book. It's easy to be sidetracked by what other people think, believe or say and so it was good encouragement to keep my eyes on Christ and His word. So ultimately I'd say this was a fantastic book.

So Good! You Need This Book!

You Are the Girl For the Job: Daring to Believe the God Who Calls You by Jess Connolly is a book for anyone who wants to accomplish great things for God, yet feels unable, unprepared, and unworthy. Jess Connolly uses personal examples, real-life experiences, and the truth of scripture to dispel any fears or hindrances that hold women back from accomplishing God's purpose and living an abundant life.
I learned a great deal from this book. I learned that God has chosen me to be where I am now, doing what I do, according to His purpose. I had feelings of being unqualified, inadequate, and unusable, but through You Are the Girl For the Job, I realized that these are just feelings, not the truth.
Anyone who reads this well-written book will be encouraged. Learning that they are handpicked, chosen, by God Himself, to accomplish the passion and purpose He has placed in their hearts. You Are the Girl For the Job helps readers to move forward and embrace their calling. This book is a must read. Definitely get a copy, and several more to share!
