I Reincarnated As Evil Alice, So the Only Thing I’m Courting Is Death!

Rate this book
Struck by a car while saving a kitten, I died and reincarnated as the heroine of Evil Alice’s Lover, my absolute favorite otome game. But before I could even enjoy my new life as Alice, I remembered something important. Even though this is a game about dating, there are so many bad endings, it won the award for “Deadliest Game of the Year”!

I’m not allowed to fall in love if I want to live?! But the death flags just keep coming!

Packed with suspense and romance, this is the story of my gothic romantic comedy!

As someone with an admitted Alice Problem, I was both excited and nervous going into this book. On the whole, however, I liked it - it plays with the cast of Carroll's novels without relying too heavily on them while also tinkering with the craze for villainess-as-heroine light novels (Alice is the heroine, in her otome game, but also not a...good...person) and even shows admirable fidelity to Victorian London - there's a reference to Mrs. Beeton's household management book, which I've never seen in a Victorian-set light novel before. I'm definitely not partial to the romantic option Alice seems to be going for, but on the whole this was much better than I was expecting and a pretty good book overall.

Demon's Children and Dark Love...

It took me a little while to get into EVIL ALICE, not for lack of interest but moreso lack of levity perhaps. Resembling a cross between Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) and Alice in Wonderland, we spend most of the book with "Alice" desperate to escape the Bad End her character so easily can fall into while getting close to her capture targets.

Along the way we see bits of the world - an idol-esque amateur detective, Queen Victoria, society events, though given the time period the details are not too heavily described.

As "Alice" had died before playing what she eventually realizes is the DLC that had been announced, she's worried what it would mean. Interestingly our dear heroine would flip back and forth when considering her life/the world. Sometimes she spoke like she was the "Alice" of the world and others she has a curious disappasionate distance as she observed things.

The ultimate culprit of the "Sleeping Beauty" crimes is surprising and given their motivation, I have to wonder if "Alice" is actually living the DLC or if because of the culprit's meddling she's living a whole different life altogether?

While I was curious about reading this book, I did not think I would like it. This was surprisingly interesting and, to me, a new take on Alice in Wonderland.

The game talk threw me for a loop at points because you start to forget that she's been cast into a game after saving a cat in the real world. The characters are all loosely based on Alice in Wonderland characters and there are themes that are similar. The setting was interesting, especially since I'm not normally into Victorian era types. I think the Love Interest was okay, I think I preferred the original Love interests for the main game more than the new one that comes along. He seems to be a bit too pushy for my tastes but I do love the history and background story to him.

The villain was an interesting choice. The line of reasoning doesn't add up to me since there wasn't a lot of plot points to point towards the person but that could be just because I wasn't looking for them but you do end up figuring out who it is pretty quickly. I wish there was more dialogue and mystery solving. I think that would have made the book more interesting.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I plan on reading the next one in the series and hope its even better! I would recommend this to anyone who likes Alice in Wonderland or those romance games on the phones where you have many love interests!

I really loved this take on Alice in Wonderland you can never have too many of these I just loved how the story was told. I loved the characters very much but I loved Alice most of all she was an interesting take on Alice Liddell much darker and very loosely based she cares about her family and solving cases for the queen it all is just Alice trying to avoid her death she is a smart and strong character who would be whatever she could for those she cares about. I loved the other characters as well I loved the stories versions of many Alice in Wonderland characters they make for interesting characters to read about. I really liked one actual love interest Dark he was a intriguing character. I loved the plot it starts with Alice telling about how she remembers her past life and telling about her family the ones she has left after most of the people she cared about were murdered the story goes into a mystery a new character is introduced some things happen and we have a happy for now ending I will read more of this story at some point.

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the beautiful cover? If this was available in print I’d buy it immediately. The cover art and the art throughout the book is absolutely stunning. I wish they had more art throughout the book and drew out more of the characters and scenes so we could experience it all. I might be asking for a manga here, LOL.

The story’s premise is an isekai/reincarnation into an otome game called Evil Alice’s Lover. Take a wrong turn and calamity falls causing Alice’s death so every step Alice takes must be calculated and planned. The concept is slightly unique in the sense that it does not focus on the main otome game but the DLC (downloadable content) which usually differs from the main game play.

Our main character Alice is really trying to fulfill her role of ‘Alice’. Although intelligent, confident, strong and empathetic she lacks the ability to separate herself from the game’s Alice. Alice is mainly thinking of what the game’s original Alice would have done and it is not until the end where we see Alice making her own choices.

There are not many characters in this book, but the ones close to Alice did stand out. Leeds who neither defined himself as male or female, Jack who stayed loyal although, and the adorable Tweedle brothers. They each had a special ability and I wish we got some more action scenes to fully understand and witness the source of their powers. And let’s not forget, Dark who is rather charming, intelligent, crafty, straightforward and flamboyant. I enjoyed reading about Dark as the main male lead since he liked Alice for her strong willed personality and looked at her as an equal.

The story is basically a mystery but with the limited characters it is pretty easy to solve while reading. Also, a lot of the quotes are not quoted on which character said which line which makes it a little difficult to understand. Even some of the flashbacks come and go which can make it a little confusing. However I think the book is intended to be read as if you are watching an anime. It really gives those vibes and I found once I was comfortable with the characters it was easy to understandwho was saying what.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and will probably pick it up for a reread soon. Based on the cover this is volume 1 but I couldn’t find any information about a second volume, although that is gladly welcomed.
