This is a story about women trying to survive in a time when female independence barely existed in Japan. While today it’s slowly becoming more possible for women to live without relying on marriage, there are still many people—because of their backgrounds or circumstances—for whom that’s not easy. In that sense, it felt natural and believable that these women would find a way to live together in a women-only shelter.
It’s not quite a story of sisterhood in the usual sense, but rather one of coexistence among women who are essentially strangers. And maybe that distance is exactly why they’re able to support each other.
