My name's Rachel McLean and I write stories you can't put down, with characters you'll be rooting for.
I'm best known for my Dorset Crime series, which has sold over a million copies. The first book in that series, The Corfe Castle Murders, won the 2021 Kindle Storyteller Award.
Here's what Clare Balding (the lead judge) had to say about the book:
'I particularly enjoyed the detail of the landscape and the humorous oddities of Dorset life. I enjoyed the richness of the characters, complexity of life for a working mother who is thrown into a new environment and has to prove herself, all over again.'
But The Corfe Castle Murders is by no means my only book. I've published five series and am working on two new ones, all of which connect. You'll find characters from each series in one or more of the other ones, so you (and I) get to follow them as they take on new challenges.
For example:
DCI Lesley Clarke is Zoe's boss in the DI Zoe Finch series and then moves to Dorset where she becomes the star of the Dorset Crime series. DS Mo Uddin is Zoe's best friend and sidekick, then moves to Scotland for the McBride & Tanner series. DC Tina Abbott is a key character in the Dorset Crime series and plays an important role in the new Lyme Regis Women's Swimming Club series of mysteries which stars her mum, Annie. Zaf Williams starts off in the DI Zoe Finch series then moves to London and is one of the stars of the London Cosy Mysteries series (along with his colleague Diana and Gus the cat). Dr Petra McBride appears in no fewer than three series and I'm planning a new series for her in 2026. And not to be outdone, Zoe Finch has two series in which she stars: the DI Zoe Finch series of 'Deadly' books, and the Cumbria Crime series. Once you get to know these characters, you'll find plenty of books to keep you entertained. And I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.
You can read a full list of the series and books on my books page. Each series is designed to be read in order but which series you go for first is really up to you.
I’m now hooked on this series of books, Zoe has become a strong main character that we learn a little bit more of in each book.
Deadly Terror like the others in the series have short chapters which keep the book moving really quickly. Gripping from the beginning and not just your normal crime books where a body is found. Deadly terror is more gritty with 2 crimes flowing through the story, but are they related?
Birmingham's favourite detective is back, this time dealing with the aftermath of a terror attack in Birmingham.
A lot more complex storyline this time yet not confusing at all.
And that ending...
You know how I feel about this series. If you like Angela Marsons 'Kim Stone' and Kerry Wilkinsons 'Jessica Daniels', its time to introduce yourself to their Birmingham counterpart - Zoe French.
Detective Zoe Finch is back in it pulsating heart pounding jawdropping fourth book of theday I Finch series. I do recommend that before reading this you do read the previous books in this series so you know more about the characters and their backgrounds and a side plot that runs throughout the series that has me hooked. In this story we have a suicide bomber at a train station and an aeroplane blowing up all in the space of one hour indicating that it is very likely to be a terror attack. But a case for Zoe Finch and her team you can be sure not everything is as straightforward as it may immediately seem. While one of the aeroplanes is grounded it becomes apparent that six women and seven children are missing from the aeroplane where are they who have them and what are their intentions? Is this indeed a terror attack or something more sinister? Could say more but do not want to give too much of the plot away. Great storyline fast paced and exhilarating and audio book brilliantly narrated…. Just totally love this series cannot get enough of it and Zoe is one of my all-time favourite characters!!!
DI Zoe Finch returns with her team DS Mo Uddin, DS Ian Osman, DC Connie Williams, and DC Rhodri Hughes, in this 4th installment of the Zoe Finch series. The story revolves around two significant crimes:
A suicide bomber sets off a nail bomb at New Street Station, resulting in multiple fatalities, including a police negotiator. Finch's boss, DCI Lesley Clarke, is injured in the New Street bombing and struggles to return to work.
A bomb goes off on a Pakistan Airways flight at Birmingham Airport, claiming the lives of 86 individuals. When signs of tampering with evidence appear, Zoe and Osman come under scrutiny by Professional Standards, with Zoe's romantic interest, Carl Whaley, investigating, which causes strain in their relationship.
At the same time, Sofia Pichler is at the airport waiting for her sister, Andreea, on a flight from Bulgaria. The men working for her boyfriend, Titi, request her assistance in gathering seven young children from the plane during the ensuing choas due to the Pakistan plane bombing.
At first, these incidents are thought to be acts of Islamist terrorism, but the investigation uncovers connections to Trevor Hamm's organized crime network. Detective Inspector Finch finds that crime leader Trevor Hamm took advantage of the airport bombing to smuggle women and children from Romania. Meanwhile the continuation of police corruption continues, with DS Ian Osman, still pretending to be an informant for Professional Standards whilst working for organized crime.
Not the best of the series, but a quick, entertaining read. It is more a continuation of the series, tying up some loose ends whilst creating others to move the series along.
Although I really like the Zoe Finch books, I have to say I was rather taken by surprise at the end of this book as it just stopped abruptly without any real resolution. I know that means that the author can take part of the storyline on into the next book but I found it quite unsatisfactory
Really didn't enjoy this book at all. A real disappointment after the previous books in the series. I would have given up had it not been for the fact theres recurring story to the series.
Trevor Hamm is still active, following the failure to get a guilty virdict in the Canary paedophile trials. Zoe's peed off as Dawson still has Mo as his sergeant and she is stuck with Ian Osman, supposedly being turned and feeding info to professional standards. Zoë doesn't trust him, and keeps a close eye on him. He was involved with Canary and she is waiting for him to slip up. Hamm has a new supply of flesh to peddle from Romania. Women and children thinking they are heading for a better new life, not telling them it would be on their backs or knees. One girl, Sofia is the exception, having caught his attention, lives a life of luxury in her personal prison and believes he cares for her. A major explosion at New Street Station by a female suicide bomber causes havoc. This is followed by a plane crash near the airport, nearby another plane has safely landed. Hamm is nearby, the cargo on the intact plane belongs to him - women & children. Another book in this series, which works well as although it continues from the previous book, it works well as a stand alone. Sufficient references to the past to keep new reader up to speed, but unlike some books within a series, it does continually repeat sections from prior editions. Well worth a read.
4 books in and the background story is still the case that swept Zoe Finch to promotion and centre stage before this series began.
At the end I must have missed the actual reason for two seemingly co-ordinated explosions unless it was a distraction for bringing in women and children as sex workers. So they got a couple of lesser villains but the main protagonists escape or remain untouchable.
So much going on as 2 stories move Zo and Mo into contact while she has to deal with son, mother, boyfriend, ex-lover, 3 ex/current bosses with agenda and saving lives while trying to solve the cases.
Only she didn't seem to. Quite some leftover like books 1, 2 and 3. Probably unfair in some respects but when you are sent an email by the author about a future unread series involving a character seriously injured in hospital..... just feels too much in stories and too few conclusions.
Well this is the fourth book in the series, and I’m not sure we’re any further forward. The books are so disjointed and the grammar and typos leave a lot to be desired.
Having said that I quite like the team, but Zoe can’t keep her mouth shut and it’s no wonder PS are investigating! Also, was Zoe stupid enough to leave her keys in the car when it went missing ? Just a thought. Ian is as bent as a nine Bob note and he’s still on the team causing havoc while Zoe is being investigated.
As I’ve started the series, I feel I must continue with them to find out what happens. This one just suddenly shot off at the end with no real conclusion. I don’t know where they get the comparison to Angela Marsons or Caroline Mitchell from, as they are exceptional authors with plenty of detail and gripping crime. These, as I’ve said before are wishy washy.

This collection of books is more of a serial than a series. The immediate mystery is solved but the overlaying series of crimes gets carried over from one book to the next. In this one Zoe is investigating two bombings, one in a shopping mall and the other a plane at the airport. In addition Mo (who has been placed on another team) is looking into a sex slavery operation involving some of the same bad guys from book #1. Zoe's boss is injured in the mall bombing and Zoe is forced to work under a suspicious cop. In order to appreciate this series you must start with the first book and carry on sequentially. I'm getting ready to read #5. Zoe is an interesting character and I like reading about her so I don't mind the serial nature of these books.
Book 4 in the series and I am still enjoying it. I wish in a way I had read all the books before the Dorset crime series, but I was drawn to that one as the books were set in Dorset. Anyway, DI Zoe Finch is called to a railway station where a suicide bomber has just exploded a bomb. At the same time a plane is blown up at the airport. To begin with the suspected bomber of the plane was thought to be a passenger, but when that was ruled out Zoe and her team had to look closer to home. I was left at the end of the book with some unanswered questions but I suspect they maybe answered in book 5. I would suggest this series is read in order but I would recommend reading them all anyway. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Follow Zoe and her team as they are thrown into the middle of two bomb explosions, one at the train station and INE at the airport. Ate they really connected? and who is behind it all. When it transpires that children and women have gone missing from the airport it adds a whole new layer to the investigation. Can they find them all and keep them safe?
Its a great story with lots of side plots, expertly threaded throughout, without it overwhelming the main story.
Well worth a read, especially if you like strong, female protagonists who still manage to show their vulnerable side too.
Another winner by Rachel McLean! This one deals with some scary stuff! Possible terrorism, the trafficking of women and children, and dirty police! Slowly but surely we're getting the answers to some of the previous cases they have worked on! And it's all beginning to make more sense! But of course, we have another cliff hanger ending!!! Grrrr! So you have to read the next book to see if they totally close out the cases! Well I want to know,so on to book 5. I. Highly recommend that you read this book. Bit start with number 1 to get all the good cliff hangers!
These books are gripping and twisty with a great background story running through each investigation. You can't help but like Zoe and most of her team. There is always a layer of doubt and suspicion about the main characters bubbling away in the background with the main investigation and the organised crime theme running alongside that make these books unputdownable. Best to read the series but you could read any book and get a sense of what has been going on
Detective Zoe Finch and her colleagues are still trying to identify and bring to justice the 'bent coppers' in their midst.
The quest continues into Book 4, against the backdrop of a bomb on an airplane and a women and children snatch from another airplane while the authorities deal with a suspected terrorist attack.
All the usual suspects are involved to varying degrees, with one ' bent copper' getting his come uppence.
3.7 stars, the weakest book in the series so far, not that this means it is not well written and entertaining. I found it harder to get into than the earlier books, particularly the non police chapters, but also the whole sequence at the airport, which I found implausible. Zoe and her team are excellent characters, and even her domestic life is interesting, which is not always the case in crime thrillers. I intend to jump to book five straightaway.
I am a bit all over the shop with this series, didn't follow on in sequence after book1 or the pre sequel.I am now having to have a sort out a lot of inter woven storylines from the previous novels to get in sync, getting there. It's very important to read the books in sequence. This series is very good plenty of thrilling instances, numorous characters and flowing storyline.😛
Birmingham New Street station is rocked by a nail bomb, killing the female bomber and the police hostage negotiator sent in to speak to her. Shortly afterwards, a bomb explodes on a plane landing from Pakistan, killing most on board. Is Birmingham the latest area to be subject to terrorist attacks.
Meanwhile, lovely Sofia is at the airport to meet her sister from a plane arriving from Bulgaria. Her boyfriend's men who are escorting her ask her to help them collect seven young children from the plane, with the roads in chaos and the phone networks down her boyfriend Titi's men don't know where to take them so she suggests taking them to the large house they share, bringing herself into contact with what Titi really does for a living.
This is both a cracking good mystery about the bombings but also progresses the overarching story arc about police corruption A LOT. Absolutely gripping and I have already started on the next book.
I just love Rachel McLean's Zoe Finch series. I have been trying to put my finger on why? The characters develop well along with the storylines and main themes from book to book. It is set in Birmingham a city I love and know well. Rachel's writing just flows with no effort for the reader. I have said before it reminds me of Line of Duty and it continues to do so. Brilliant. Highly recommend.
Somewhat frustrating at times with Randle and Dawson but a good book none the less. Looking forward to book 5 where they will hopefully track down Hamm. Highly recommend this series, one of the best I've read. Right up there with my favourites! Although that favourite list is rather long! Rachel is so lovely.
Another excellent book by Rachel McLean, DI Zoe Finch is wrapped up in a suicide bomber at Birmingham train station and a blown up plane at Birmingham. It does get complicated but the tension and the questions do build up quite quickly. It has one of those endings which just leave you hanging though.
Really enjoyed the book. It moved slowly at first but gained pace as the story unfolded. The topic was a difficult read but unfortunately all too familiar in today's climate (police corruption and trafficking for sex) It is unbelievable that the men who use these places are not also considered criminals after all they facilitate the whole process!!the
This book is very Simon Kernick-ish. Fast moving from the start, without revealing much of the plot until the end. And somehow during the reading of the book I felt the book isn't much had my desire to know ending vanish. And that's exactly what it is, nothing much. This book is definitely not as satisfying as the last. Hopefully the same trend form doesn't continue in the next book.
Another great story in Inspector Detective Zoe Finch series. Great characters and a strong well plotted story line. I did at times find it difficult to read having lost a family member in the Manchester Arena bombing. And also the name of the Pakistani terrorist in the story Abidi is very similar to the Arena bombers name.
Bombs and baddies fill this instalment of the Zoe Finch detective series. Is everything connected? Who is behind it all?
One thing that is annoying in this series is how women are treated - no respect, for example. Though not all the men are sexist, there are too many that get away with it.
This series just keeps getting better and better. The characters are very believable, and I love the relationship between Zoe and Mo. The action kept me wanting to read more. Now it's ended I can't wait for the next one.
I have read all the books so far all very different and all very good. So if you like a detective with attitude .lots of action and good police procedure. This is for you.
