Prepare to be whisked away by the enchanting pages of DJanée's "The Blizzard's Secrets." This literary gem unfurls a captivating odyssey through a realm teeming with enigmatic enclaves, power tussles, and the intricate labyrinth of identity. Picture yourself wandering the intricate landscapes of Taliver, a world of both mystery and revelation, where this fantasy novel orchestrates a symphony of intrigue and personal revelation that entrances readers from the very first utterance until the final note.

Nestled within the core of "The Blizzard's Secrets" lies an exploration of choice, destiny, and the tireless pursuit of absolute truth. The story's leading light, Daia, stands as a fierce protagonist straddling the crossroads of obligation and curiosity. As a fledgling Commander, Daia's destiny is seemingly etched in stone, yet her encounter with the enigmatic Seer and the commanding Ruler sends ripples through her life, charting a course rife with unexpected bends. The artistry of DJanée's prose intricately captures Daia's internal battle, turning her into a figure both approachable and endearing. Witness Daia's transformation from an eager apprentice to a leader wrestling with the labyrinthine paths of moral quandaries—a journey that's both inspiring and profoundly thought-provoking.

Taliver, the very world that cradles the tale, is crafted with astonishing finesse. DJanée's mastery of detail renders it a living, breathing entity, one where grand castles ooze opulence, regal corridors exude an air of majesty, and an aura of enigma envelops the Ruler's dominion. The author paints a portrait of a society dancing on the tightrope of tradition and modernity, weaving tribal roots with contemporary governance—a masterpiece of intricacy and allure.

Marvel at the symphony of pacing in this narrative—a testament to DJanée's innate storytelling prowess. The cadence of suspense holds readers in thrall, the tempo quickening in anticipation of secrets yet to be unveiled. A prologue drenched in intrigue teases the elaborate web of enigma that awaits. And as Daia shoulders the colossal responsibility of donning the Ruler's mantle for a single day, the tale's trajectory veers into a realm of political machination and concealed motives—an unforeseen twist that catapults readers into a maelstrom of intrigue and clandestine agendas.

Characters are the lifeblood of any narrative, and "The Blizzard's Secrets" is no exception. DJanée's brushstroke-like development breathes life into characters, transforming them into multi-dimensional companions. Daia's growth is bolstered by the enigmatic Seer, an oracle whose cryptic counsel challenges Daia's perceptions. The Ruler's labyrinthine motives infuse the tale with depth, and his unprecedented request for Daia to briefly wield his authority raises a pivotal question about leadership—how does one balance power and responsibility without faltering?

Beneath it all, Daia's internal strife over loyalty reverberates like a heartbeat, lending an almost tangible pulse to the narrative. With every nuance of Daia's emotional struggle masterfully conveyed, readers become inextricably bound to the unfolding saga. Threads of relationships and motivations weave a tapestry of complexity that leaves readers thirsting for revelations yet to be unveiled.

The narrative's core weaves an intricate tapestry of themes—loyalty, authenticity, and the ceaseless pursuit of truth. The murky demarcation between right and wrong dominates the narrative landscape as Daia grapples with her duty clashing against her innate curiosity. As Daia's struggle mirrors the societal tremors coursing through Taliver, the narrative's resonance deepens, spotlighting the intricate dance of authority and the inherent trials of leadership.

DJanée's prose is an orchestration of elegance and emotion. Readers are transported, not just to Taliver, but to the very heart of its existence. The descriptions burst forth like blooms, the sensory immersion almost tangible—each scene transforms into a vivid canvas, from the towering opulence of castles to hushed conversations that resonate with gravitas, to pivotal junctures that sculpt Daia's destiny.

In essence, "The Blizzard's Secrets" stands as a spellbinding masterpiece in the realm of fantasy. DJanée's finesse in world-building, character evolvement, and narrative depth reverberates through the pages. The author's storytelling prowess glistens as an intricately woven tapestry of power, enigma, and self-discovery unfolds. As Daia's expedition unfurls, readers embark on a riveting odyssey that delves into the heart of identity, loyalty, and the relentless chase for unvarnished truth. A mandatory read for aficionados of fantasy, this book is a pledge to an immersive voyage that lingers, casting its spell long after the final chapter.

Daia lives in the isolated community of Taliver situated behind tall defensive walls. Taliver was founded generations ago when Daia's tribal ancestors discovered this peaceful land after migrating from the harsh Frozen Tundra region. Daia is training under the Seer to become the next Commander of Forces - the protector of Taliver. However, shortly before her induction ceremony, strange events unfold that raise suspicions about deception within the community.

The story is told through five chapters that provide an excerpt from the start of the book. Daia is nervous about her upcoming speech at the ceremony, worrying that she isn't ready to take on such an important leadership role. The Seer shares a story from his past about discovering his mentor dead under mysterious circumstances, easing Daia's doubts and reassuring her of her capabilities. Their session is interrupted by Steven, the Ruler's right-hand man summoning Daia for an immediate meeting with the Ruler.

In a private audience, the Ruler requests Daia's help with a peculiar task that violates Taliver's core principles of isolation and self-sufficiency. He shows her an intricate scale model of Taliver tucked behind his throne. Piqued by this strange breach of rules and the Ruler's lack of explanation, Daia agrees to embark on a journey outside the community's walls to uncover the truth behind his motives.

Some key aspects about Taliver's society are revealed through the excerpts. Senior positions like the Commander and Seer are held by people with mixed ancestral heritage, symbolizing a balance of attributes. Only direct descendants of the ancestral tribe can become Ruler due to their resilience against the hostile natural environment. Community members never venture beyond the defensive walls for safety against dangerous storms and creatures in the surrounding lands.

The book raises intriguing mysteries and tensions that will drive the unfolding plot. Why was the Seer's mentor exiled from Taliver under mysterious circumstances? What lie waiting in the unexplored regions outside the community? What secrets are the Ruler keeping from his people? Daia's instincts tell her all is not as it seems within Taliver. She is determined to find answers and protect her citizens from any lurking threats, even if it means defying the highest authority.

While only a brief segment is available, the writing style engages the reader with vivid descriptions of the isolated snowbound setting and complex tribal-based society. Daia is established as a strong analytical protagonist determined to challenge deception. The gradual build up of suspicion and foreboding provides a compelling hook to continue the story. Fans of intrigue-driven fantasy will want to discover where Daia's journey leads and the concealed truths she uncovers about Taliver's foundations and past.

In summary, The Blizzard's Secrets is an auspicious start to what promises to be an captivating mystery/political thriller genre tale. Readers are left with many questions and tension as to how Daia's investigation unfolds outside the safe walls of Taliver. The excerpt effectively sets the stage for an adventure of secrets, danger and high stakes as Daia seeks the truth at any cost. Djanée demonstrates skill in crafting an immersive snowbound setting and complex tribal-inspired community ripe for deeper revelations and plot twists. Fans of stories blending mystery, political intrigue and fantasy will want to read on after this promising opening chapter.

Set within the isolated tribal community of Taliver, DJanée’s fantasy mystery novel The Blizzard’s Secrets introduces readers to an intriguing world filled with complex politics, familial traditions and long-held secrets just beneath the surface. Through five chapters of excerpts provided in the advanced reader copy, the story wastes no time drawing readers into the simmering tensions that will no doubt escalate into a thrilling adventure as the protagonist Daia seeks out the truth behind the community’s foundations.

Daia is a well-established character who has been training under the Seer to one day take on the crucial role of Commander of Forces. From the outset, her analytical nature and duty-bound responsibility towards protecting Taliver’s citizens are evident. But intrigue is sown as strange events unfold just prior to her induction ceremony, beginning with a mysterious summons from the community’s Ruler, Julius. Daia finds herself questioning the secrets being kept from the people and feeling compelled to uncover any deception that could threaten Taliver’s safety.

The isolated society of Taliver has been carefully crafted, with different ancestral roles granting varying levels of authority and tradition. Community leadership positions symbolize a balance of attributes from both the indigenous natives and tribal ancestors who originally discovered this land. Additional world-building establishes the defensive reasons for isolating behind tall walls and avoiding the dangerous environments outside. Technological and cultural aspects have not been depicted, leaving opportunities to continue fleshing out this imaginative setting in greater depth.

Curiosity is piqued through short interludes describing the Ruler’s perplexing private request of Daia and a past story of intrigue around the Seer’s exiled mentor. Though tantalizingly brief, these seeds of mystery effectively raise questions and doubts that will no doubt develop into complex revelations down the narrative rabbit hole. Daia’s growing suspicions about long-held deceptions prepare readers for political machinations and tangled webs of secrets yet to be uncovered.

While only a taste of the full narrative is provided, DJanée's writing style skillfully immerses the reader in this vividly realized world. Complex tribal culture and traditions are realistically portrayed without info-dumping exposition. Layered character development establishes compelling protagonists that readers will be eager to follow on their investigative journey outside the community walls. The slow build of uncertainty ensures readers will want to continue experiencing this unfolding mystery.

With a strong opening that wastes no time hooking readers, The Blizzard’s Secrets proves to be an auspicious start to what promises to be a richly plotted and immersive fantasy adventure. DJanée demonstrates talent in crafting intricate political systems and seeding drama through nuanced interpersonal dynamics ripe for deeper revelations. Fans of stories blending mystery, political intrigue and escapist fantasy will find much to admire in this imaginative new series. While only a glimpse has been provided, the excerpts bode well for a cleverly crafted and engaging full narrative that will be a joy for readers to fully delve into. DJanée is an author to watch and this intricate new world promises many more secrets left to unearth.

DJanée's debut novel, The Blizzard's Secrets, took me by surprise with its multifaceted exploration of challenging norms, overcoming self-doubt, and claiming one's voice against the status quo. While brimming with elements common to the fantasy genre like detailed world-building and political intrigue, the heart of the story focuses on Daia's journey of empowerment through pushing boundaries and trusting her intuition. Rather than getting lost in complex lore or convoluted plots, DJanée keeps the narrative grounded in Daia's character growth in a way that feels motivating without being preachy.

The story is set up to seem like a straightforward induction of Daia into her new leadership role, but it quickly becomes clear all is not as it seems in Taliver. From the very beginning, DJanée hints that Daia senses something amiss though can't quite put her finger on it. Rather than ignoring this inner tugging, Daia boldly decides to seek answers for herself. It's refreshing to see a protagonist not merely accept the circumstances handed to her but actively challenge perceived limitations. Watching Daia trust her instincts over abandoning her curiosity for the sake of tradition makes her an inspiring role model for women coming into their own.

What I found most unique about Daia's arc was how DJanée frames confronting doubts and overcoming fear of failure not as weaknesses but natural parts of growth. Daia openly admits feeling unprepared for her new responsibilities yet still chooses to persevere regardless. In doing so, she models believing in oneself even without having all the answers. Doubt, uncertainty and missteps are presented not as character flaws but opportunities to push one's own boundaries, similar to a real journey of self-actualization. Readers can't help but root for Daia as her strength and competence shine through by embodying courage over perfection.

Daia's relationship with the enigmatic Seer also adds perspective on breaking free of ingrained perceptions. Where others view the Seer as an eccentric, Daia sees wisdom worth trusting despite unconventional methods. Their bond shows appreciating people as multi-dimensional beyond surface qualities or status. In questioning the Seer's somewhat shady past that others hastily judged, Daia proves open-mindedness and empathy can empower discovering fuller truths society overlooks. This emphasis on nuanced connections felt refreshing amid fantasy traditions of cut-and-dry allegiances.

While plot revelations like Daia uncovering long-buried secrets do thrill and intrigue, the story's core message seems to encourage believing in one's inner fire instead of living up to external expectations. Overall themes of individualism, learning from mistakes, and owning one's power gave the narrative a progressive note missing from many similarly-marketed fantasy works. Rather than presenting a false utopia, DJanée crafts Taliver as a realistic realm where societal conditioning affects even the open-minded but female protagonists can rise above through compassion and courageous curiosity.

Though DJanée weaves imaginative magic into every intricately detailed passage, at its heart The Blizzard's Secrets pulses with the universal struggle of accepting oneself fully on one's own terms. Daia's story resonated deeply as an empowering model for anyone navigating self-doubt or conditioning that tells them to remain silent or small. DJanée's lyrical prose transports readers straight into Daia's journey of empowerment through trusting inner strength over external pressures. Overall, the book offered a refreshing perspective on fantasy focusing less on grandeur and more on the power within each individual to shape their own destiny.

This fantasy is the length of a short novella (around 130 pages) and is a really quick, fast paced read! I finished in under 2 hours. It was enjoyable, but due to the length, I wish it was longer so I could get more invested in the characters and the world. Like I wish there was more world building and character backstory. But for what was written, I thought it was really good. If I look at it like a fantasy oneshot, like looking at it as a moment in time of a larger fantasy story, then it’s wonderful. I enjoyed the twist, and while some phrases were repetitive, I actually found it kind of helpful as I need things to be repeated to get it straight in my head. Also the end— yes girl!! I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I was gifted this copy by the lovely author and StoryGram Tours

From the moment the prologue introduces the enigmatic world of Taliver, DJanée’s The Blizzard’s Secrets immerses the reader in a spellbinding story. Set in the remote community of Taliver, protected by tall stone walls from the dangers of the surrounding tundra, the novel follows Daia on her journey to assume her role as Commander of the Forces. What begins as Daia preparing for her induction ceremony soon transforms into a captivating quest for truth as secrets from Taliver’s past are uncovered and suspicion arises around the intentions of its leader, the Ruler.

Over the course of the novel, DJanée masterfully builds an intricately detailed world in Taliver through rich descriptions that come vividly to life on the page. From the opulent yet inviting castle to the quaint neighborhood streets, every location feels authentically realized. Supplementary details about the community’s traditions and tribal roots further enrich the world-building and contextualize the characters’ lived experiences. This level of world-building allows the reader to feel fully transported to Taliver, experiencing it as a fully immersive setting rather than just a backdrop for the story.

Within this exquisitely crafted setting, DJanée introduces a cast of memorable characters. Daia, in particular, develops into a strong and inspirational protagonist as her journey of self-discovery unfolds. From the beginning, Daia is established as a determined and capable young woman destined for leadership, yet she also grapples privately with doubts about living up to expectations. Her dynamic character arc over the course of the novel, as she faces personal growth and moral dilemmas, makes her highly relatable and engaging to follow. Similarly, supporting characters like the Seer and the Ruler are intriguing in their own right, with hinting suggestions that there is more to them than initially meets the eye. These richly drawn characters become an immersive driving force behind the narrative.

Throughout the novel, themes of truth, loyalty, justice, and one’s personal integrity take center stage as various revelations call Daia’s loyalties into question. She finds herself caught between her duty to Taliver and her instincts to get to the bottom of its mysteries. DJanée delves into these complex themes in a nuanced, thoughtful way that gets the reader analyzing multiple sides to each issue. Daia’s internal struggles feel authentic as she works to balance her roles as a leader and an individual seeking her own purpose. Her journey makes for a compelling character-driven story that resonates on multiple levels.

While the plot initially sets up Daia’s induction ceremony as the central objective, it takes an unexpected turn when Daia decides to investigate suspicious new information on her own. From here the novel unfolds at a rapid yet absorbing pace, continuously presenting exciting new twists and unveiling deeper layers of intrigue with each answered question. What could have become a predictable ceremony turns into a multi-faceted mystery as secrets from Taliver’s past intertwine with its present-day power dynamics and shifting leadership. DJanée displays a true talent for suspenseful storytelling that keeps readers constantly guessing as to where the narrative may lead next.

During pivotal moments in the story, the shifting perspectives between different key characters within the same scene prove to be an effective technique that opens up a new dimension to various interactions and events. Getting insights into how different individuals interpret or react to the same situation fosters a more well-rounded understanding of the intricacies at play. It also builds further anticipation as to how their perspectives may change or align over time. These shifts in point-of-view invite the reader deeper into each character’s mindset.

Alongside its intricately woven plotlines, another strength of The Blizzard’s Secrets lies in its smooth integration of various supporting elements. Secondary characters, while not always in the spotlight, round out Taliver’s community in meaningful ways. Vivid yet economical descriptions transport the reader to each new setting. Subplots unfold naturally from the central mystery. Perhaps most impressive is how DJanée seamlessly weaves in backstories that add enriching context without interrupting the forward momentum of the main narrative arc. All of these components come together cohesively to immerse the reader fully in Taliver’s captivating world.

In the climactic final act, as Daia undertakes her most challenging test yet, stakes escalate further than expected along with rapidly paced revelations. DJanée leaves just enough mystery unraveled to satisfy while also crafting an impactful conclusion that resonates on an emotional level. Loose ends are tied up in a satisfying manner that closes the chapter on Taliver’s story while potentially opening the door for future installments. Overall, the novel builds to an intensely thrilling yet meaningful climax that feels fitting given the overarching themes explored throughout.

In the end, what lingers most about The Blizzard’s Secrets is its thoughtful exploration of timeless concepts and moving protagonist journey. Daia serves as an inspiring role model tackling real questions around leadership, truth, and one’s place in the world with poise and empathy. The multiple layers of Taliver’s society subtly comment on relevant issues in any community: corruption of power, importance of truth and justice, necessity of questioning norms, moral complexities of shifting loyalties. DJanée proves to be a natural storyteller with masterful execution across character development, plot structure, descriptive prose and more. Readers will find themselves swept away by this immersive fantasy world and unlikely to forget Daia’s captivating quest anytime soon. The Blizzard’s Secrets delivers an impactful story perfect for fans of character-driven mysteries with depth. DJanée is an author to watch and this work recommends itself as a memorable page-turner from beginning to end.

Took a little white to get into it but when it started to pick up I really enjoyed it.

Prologue didn’t seem very necessary as it kind of gives away what’s going to happen which I found dampened the surprise.

Overall would recommend if you are just getting into fantasy or want a quick easy read.

The Blizzard’s Secret follows Daia as she prepares to take her position as captain of the guard in the town of Talliver. Prior to her induction ceremony, she makes some unsettling discoveries, and sets out to learn more and make things right. The premise is interesting, and the story has good bones. But good bones don’t make for a solid structure, and that’s where TBS falls apart.

-SPOILERS AHEAD-

Pacing: The pacing is a mess. This is likely due in part to TBS being a novella – too much is going on with too few pages to tell the story adequately. It also fluctuates between things happening all at once and passages being needlessly drawn out. In mere pages we learn of the previous seer’s death and find Daia suddenly summoned by the ruler, and then we have an entire chapter devoted to following the ruler through the castle and into the night, in a scene where literally nothing of consequence happens. We don’t need every stop on the ‘follow the ruler’ tour; highlight the relevant ones and move on.

Plot: the idea of the plot is good – discovering that your nice little utopia isn’t what you think it is makes for an interesting story. But it falls down in several areas. The twists added in seem to be there for the sake of ‘oh you thought it was x? Nope, it’s actually y!’. Twists for the sake of twists. And speaking of twists, the choice that Marquis is just gonna do nothing, after traveling back to the castle to confront his brother makes no sense. That was thrown in for shock value and makes him a weak character.

Characters: Daia is very two-dimensional. She’s really not interesting. The only other character she has a real connection with is the Seer, and we know nothing about her outside of the plot because we aren’t allowed to see anything else. It also makes it hard to relate to or like the character. Why do we care about her when we’re given no reason to? Even her internal monologue is dull. She thinks in ‘I’ statements all the time, which not only makes for a boring read but also isn’t how people really think. And the other characters are so barely-there that I can’t really speak to their personalities. The Ruler is supposedly a good man, but we only know this because Daia tells us. And then oh no he’s secretly the bad guy! And that kinda comes out of nowhere. And even when he’s revealed to be the villain, he does nothing. He has no agency. Also why are the ruler and seer not allowed names? And who the heck is Petrus? He showed up in the prologue, and halfway through the book, but his addition was so poorly handled that for awhile I thought he was the seer.

Storytelling: TBS falls into some very common pitfalls. One is describing things for the sake of the reader, when the PoV character has no reason to consider them. Daia has (presumably) walked down the hall to the ruler’s room a dozen times; does she consider the décor every single time? Does she think about that portrait, and the history of rulers that has since been abolished, every single time? Most people don’t walk into a room they’ve seen repeatedly and contemplate the same painting that’s been there since time immemorial, so why do characters? Additionally, Daia has just learned something disturbing and been summoned by the ruler, so maybe this isn’t the time for décor commentary?

Repetition: The repetition was tiresome. Early on I was tired of reading ‘the traditions of our tribal ancestors’. We get it, everything your characters do is because of their ancestors – except when it isn’t, and we’re told about that too – but after saying it once, you can move on. Additionally, the use of “The Ruler” got old fast, especially when Daia herself said that she and ‘the ruler’ were relatively familiar with each other. Using the phrase 15 times in a 4-and-a-half-page chapter is excessive. Using it twice in the same sentence is lazy writing. Also, the emphasis on ‘citizens’ and ‘community’ and ‘pure bloodline’ is really off-putting.

TL;DR is that while the premise of this book is good, a lot of areas really let it down. A few more pages, and a bit more development would’ve resulted in a much stronger book.

Everything Daia thinks she knows is about to go up in smoke… or blow away on the howling wind of an icy storm in DJanée’s riveting and compelling tale of suspense, lies, treason, and murder.

On the eve of her induction ceremony into the Commander of the Forces of the community of Taliver, young Daia finds herself in the middle of the bitter Frozen Tundra, facing into the teeth of a raging blizzard as she carries out a direct order from the Ruler. But is there more to the secret mission than meets the eye? Furthermore, only direct descendants of the tribal answers are immune to the raging storms outside Taliver. And Daia isn’t one of them.

Daia soon wonders if “Always faithful, always true” as applied to the Ruler may not be all it’s cracked up to be – or perhaps pretend to be – in this gripping suspense tale.

Meanwhile, in a society that values balance, the position of Ruler is held only by direct descendants of the tribal ancestors. With secrets swirling like snowflakes, Daia soon finds herself caught between the Ruler’s orders and her sense of duty to the community of Taliver.

More questions begin to whirl. Is there more to the Ruler than meets the eye? If so, why? Will the citizens’ lives be jeopardized by lies and manipulations? Have the citizens put their trust in a lie? If they have, then what?

The tradition of “pure tribal ancestry on the throne” and a “tainted bloodline wearing the crown” is a recurring theme. It’s one of the ways the author skillfully builds tension in this taut and tightly written tale of suspense and double-crosses, where all is not what it seems to be.

Reading The Blizzard’s Secrets is like peeling an onion. Just about the time you finish peeling one layer, you find another. And another. And secrets a-plenty. In fact, you don’t really know who’s telling the truth and who isn’t. So when the Ruler sends Daia out into the Frozen Tundra on a covert mission, you’re soon wondering along with Daia what she’s really after - and why

The author’s world-building skills are impressive. Fully immersed in this story from chapter one, you’ll soon find yourself moving soundlessly through a grove of trees under a bright moon or shivering and reaching for another blanket.

The author’s ability to craft a subtle but distinct rising line of tension shines throughout the storyline. The plot keeps readers dangling like a fish on a hook and reels them in slowly with just enough bait to keep them biting. And guessing. Or in this case, shivering. The pacing is brisk. The author does a great job of doling out just enough clues to keep readers wondering about what’s happening and why without giving away too much too soon.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I picked up The Blizzard’s Secrets. But sometimes when you take on chance on an unfamiliar author with a brand new title, it pays off. In spades. Like The Blizzard’s Secrets.

The Blizzard’s Secrets is sure to be a hit with its target audience of young adult readers, and anyone who enjoys a well-told story.

And talk about a cliffhanger ending! I’m hanging on by my fingernails! More, please!

I went into The Blizzard’s Secrets blind, having only briefly glanced at the blurb. The cover is largely what drew me to request an ARC, but I’m glad that it did. Immediately I was drawn into the story by Daia, our narrator and main character.

The Blizzard’s Secrets is short, a nice quick read. I finished it in a single setting, but needed a little time to mull over what I had read, as I wasn’t entirely sure if I liked it once I had finished, despite really enjoying the protagonist. The story starts with Daia just about to ascend to the position of Commander of Taliver’s forces. She is feeling unsure of herself and uncertain of her readiness to take on this position. She is then thrust into secrets and secretive missions after receiving a strange test from the Ruler and choosing instead to follow him outside of Taliver, a place no one is supposed to venture due to the danger of the cold fierce tundra and storms it harbors.

DJanée created a very interesting world, and Daia is a compelling character. I appreciated her growth, but I have to say considering the twists this story takes, it really needs to be longer to fully flesh out everything the author is trying to convey in this story. I feel like certain things were rushed that would have strengthened the story if only they had more time dedicated to them. This story had so many lovely layers to it, it just feel it was a shame they weren’t developed as well as they could have been. I think this could have been easily 100 pages longer and not suffered a bit. I wanted to know more about the Seer, and the Ruler, the Ruler especially. At times I felt as if they fell flat in comparison to Daia.

The mood and tension in the story were good, but again I think could have benefited from more detail. DJanée has nice prose, and it is just shame there wasn’t more. I find myself saying more over and over in trying to express my thoughts on this work, and I feel like that is actually the easiest way to sum up my thoughts.

The Blizzard’s Secrets reads like it has good bones, but it simply needs more. The worldbuilding is interesting, but I need more to feel completely immersed. The characters are intriguing, but other than Daia fall flat because they lack some bit of substance, making me wish there was again, more. The plot felt rushed and truly could have benefited from just being a little longer to give clarity, and slow the pace while providing more nuance.

🇬🇧: I thank the author and netgalley for sending me the ARC.
I expected much more. From the plot and various comments it seemed very interesting: murders, secrets, suspense and betrayals. Well, I couldn’t find them. Well, they were there, but he didn’t show them to me. He just talks about it. About what happened, about the truth, but I wanted maybe some flashbacks, something to show me. It’s just a long speech.
Of action there is little and nothing and the events are told in a fast and hasty way. I did not want to continue reading it.
I could not sympathize with any character, really too short to be able to feel any emotion towards them.
The only thing I liked was the final plot twist that I didn’t expect. Although I would have preferred it to keep going. What happens next? We’ll never know. It’s like this book is a prologue to another book, I haven’t heard it finished. I wish it had been longer and maybe see how Daia behaved knowing the truth but not being able to reveal it to anyone. What if some citizen found out? What would have happened? A riot?
I mean, it wasn’t the book for me.

DJanée's "The Blizzard's Secrets" is a tantalizing journey into the heart of a dystopian world that feels both eerily familiar and shockingly unique. Set in the ostensibly tranquil community of Taliver, the novella captivates readers right from the outset.

As we follow Daia, a young woman poised to become the Commander of the Forces, we're quickly drawn into a narrative that is as much about personal growth as it is about political intrigue. DJanée has skillfully painted a character who is fierce, intelligent, and undeniably human. Daia's evolution from a disciplined apprentice to a leader grappling with profound truths is both believable and inspiring.

One of the novella's standout features is its intricate plot, rife with unexpected twists and revelations. Just when you think you've grasped the depth of Taliver's secrets, DJanée throws another curveball, keeping readers on their toes and ensuring the pages keep turning.

The theme of "empowering individualism" is beautifully woven throughout the story. Amidst the backdrop of a false utopia and the shadows of deceit, Daia's pursuit of justice and truth is a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity. Her journey underscores the importance of questioning, of seeking truth, and of standing up for one's beliefs even when the path is fraught with danger.

For fans of dystopian tales, "The Blizzard's Secrets" offers a fresh perspective in the genre. Its concise format makes it an ideal pick for those seeking a compelling story that can be devoured in a single sitting. Yet, despite its brevity, DJanée ensures the world-building is rich, the characters are multi-dimensional, and the plot leaves a lasting impact.

In conclusion, "The Blizzard's Secrets" is a must-read for anyone who cherishes tales of resilience, intrigue, and the unyielding pursuit of truth. DJanée has crafted a world that is both haunting and captivating, and I eagerly await her next literary venture.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Blizzard’s Secrets by DJanee has a civilization living up near snow that only certain people can survive in.

Can Daia protect her people?
Daia has sacrificed a lot of her time to become the next Commander of the Forces for Taliver’s safety. The Seer chose her to do this, and it was decided that she would become the next Commander.  Daia stepped into the lion’s den of trickery, yet she found out much more than she had hoped. She is a great character, and it definitely shows that her training was excellent because of what she can do. Except what will she do to help her people?

Taliver is in a little pocket of fresh air that is sunny, green, and warm. The Tundra is nothing like that, and it is always snowing out there in the form of a blizzard. Also, only certain members of their civilization can survive out in the Tundra, and the others cannot. Daia is lucky she survived going into the Tundra the first time.

Four Stars for The Blizzard’s Secrets
My rating for The Blizzard’s Secrets by DJanee is four stars. DJanee has left me wanting more from this story, and to have this satisfied, perhaps it could have been a longer book. I loved everything about it but thought we could’ve seen more. I’m also still recommending it since it is a fantastic book.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of The Blizzard’s Secrets by DJanee.

Until the next time,

"The Blizzard's Secrets" by DJanee is a sensational journey into the heart of a chilling and gripping narrative, a tale that left me captivated and utterly spellbound. As a teenager, I can't recommend this book enough to my fellow readers, for it is a thrilling adventure filled with suspense, lies, and a web of deceit that will keep you turning pages well into the night.
.
One of the elements that left me in awe was the author's world-building skills. I felt entirely immersed in the story, whether I was moving stealthily through moonlit groves or shivering in the biting cold. The vivid descriptions transported me to the heart of this suspenseful world.
.
What truly sets "The Blizzard's Secrets" apart is its artful construction of tension. The author keeps you on the edge of your seat, peeling back layers of mystery like an onion, leaving you hungry for more. With every revelation, you're left pondering the truth and questioning the motives of the enigmatic Ruler. Daia's covert mission into the Frozen Tundra unravels into a mind-blowing journey, and you'll be right there with her, anxiously wondering what lies beneath the surface.
.
The pacing of the story is brisk, and the author expertly doles out clues, leaving you perpetually guessing and yearning for answers. "The Blizzard's Secrets" is a marvelously well-told story, a gem waiting to be discovered by young adult readers and anyone who appreciates a tale that keeps you at the edge of your seat, shivering with anticipation.

This short story fits into the "winter fantasy" category very well! The setting is frigid and full of secrets and I think it lives up to its title well.

My reasons for giving it 3.5 stars out of 5 is because I was pulled into the story and left wanting. A lot of readers are calling it a "cliff hanger", but this story was just left unfinished. I love a good cliff-hanger and I read a LOT of them, but this was an incomplete story with no plot resolution. It ended in the middle of scene with no actual ending. With it being a short story (89 pages), there really needed to be some kind of resolution to give the reader a sense of accomplishment... if this is meant to be a standalone short story. If it's a prequel to a novel that's already out (where the plot is resolved in the main book), I would be more accepting of this kind of freeze-ending (see what I did there?). But from my quick investigation, I can't seem to find a companion novel, so there's no way to even continue the story at this time of this review, nor could I find any mention of a series coming in the future.

That being said, if the story would've lasted another couple of pages (honestly, just long enough to hear the main character's speech) and had a satisfying ending, I would've given this 5 stars. For only 89 pages, so much happened, and it was paced out well. I loved the setting and suspense pulling me on. Daia is a very spunky, naïve, and brash character that makes her loveable in a unique way.

Overall, I'm going to live with the wonder of what Daia said in her speech for possibly the rest of my life.

Content: No romance. No cursing. Only mild survival scenes, no action.

I wanted to thank the author for giving me an ARC in return for an honest review!

The Blizzard's Secrets is a YA dystopian / fantasy novella. The main character, being Daia discovers the web of lies that have been fed to Taliver - a peaceful community. The Ruler is not who he seems, in fact he is a man of questionable decisions with no regard to the community.

This was a pretty good book with a solid premise. I really enjoyed it, its a short read (considering it is a novella) so its nice to get you out of a slump if you need something fast-paced and interesting.

My main issue was that the book was too fast-paced. Don't get me wrong, I love a fast paced book but The Blizzard's Secrets was just too much. The chapters were very short and the plot just unravelled way to quickly.
I think, because the book is so fast-paced, it left little room for character development. Daia is a good character in terms of her framework but I just felt that her character could have improved more throughout the book and developed a bit more. Unfortunately, there was not much of that.

The writing, however, was really good and I would have enjoyed this book more if perhaps it was told at a slower pace because the plot is really interesting. And don't get me wrong, I understand this is a novella.

Overall, this is a good book to read in times when you need something fast-paced and interesting to get you out of a slump - considering I read this and finished it in the same day!

I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review and unfortunately this book was not my cup of tea.

Our main character Daia, who has trained to be the Commander of Taliver, tells a story of her few days before her induction ceremony. Secrets start to unfold and Daia sets on a journey to uncover the truth. The premise of this story has captured me which is why I requested to this book along with its cover, however, reading the book, many of the circumstances felt too convenient to continue the plot.

Nevertheless, the main reason this book wasn't for me was due to its short length. For some people, this may be a great quick escape after 1000 page book, however, this felt too short for my taste. Due to the length of this, I felt that there wasn't enough time for world building which is a shame as I can see great potential in this story. I am eager to learn more about Taliver and it's background and the characters themselves as well. They were flat without personalities which meant that I wasn't as invested in their fate as I would have liked.

Overall, I have expected a little bit more of this book, however, given it's length the story wasn't for me. However, other people looking for quick escape may still enjoy it.

I received this as an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely flew through this book I loved it that much!! The world-building was incredible and I felt like I was in the freezing Tundra with Daia 🥶(despite reading this in summer). I loved Daia the MC and feel like she was easy to connect with. She’s strong-willed, brave, and not afraid to speak her mind, which is the kind of thing I like to see in MC’s.

The plot twists were what sold it for me! 🤍 so much happened that I really didn’t expect, it kept me on my toes for sure and I couldn’t stop reading (even when it was 2:00am 🙈). On top of all of this, the cliff hanger at the end had me contemplating it for hours after finishing the book and left me wanting more.

This was a very beautifully written book, the words seemed to just flow seamlessly, making the reading experience very smooth and enjoyable (which is usually difficult for me because I have dyslexia and ADHD so my brain is all over the place 🤣).

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone out there that wants to delve into a unique dystopian world. Release date is 19th September.

The Blizzard’s Secrets was sadly not for me.

There were parts of the story that I did enjoy, namely the way that every time you discovered something, yet another secret revealed itself. The more you find out about this world and its politics, the more questions you have.

This leads to my main issue with the story. I feel like I know almost nothing about the world or the characters. There was a huge lack of world building in this story. In a similar vein, I feel like I knew even less about the characters. There was never any time to get to know our narrator Daia. She was always in a linear path towards the plot with no diversions that showed personality or relationships she had with people in the town. We never saw any motivations besides her duty.

Overall, the world of Taliver just felt too small and could’ve benefited from more fleshed out world building and character development.

The cliffhanger at the end tho…I do want to know what happens next…

I received The Blizzard's Secrets from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review and I read it so quickly, I was sad to see it end. I think there could be so much more world building to dive deeper into the characters and Taliver. I want to know more about how they came to be in this place, surrounded by a tundra and about all the intertwining secrets. More than anything, I gave this story 4 stars because it felt slightly unfinished. That's not a bad thing in any way, it pushes me to want to more about the world DJanee started to create and I hope she will continue to explore her voice in future writing adventures.

Synopsis: Daia, the soon to be Commander of the Forces, is dedicate to the people of Taliver. When she uncovers a secret about the previous Seer's death, her curiosity pushes her to know more and uncover the truth. However, there are some people who do not want the truth to be revealed, so can she survive long enough to have her voice heard?

I was really looking forward to read this book, as I have really been leaning into the fantasy portion of my bookshelf as of late. However I found myself wanting more out of this story and book. Its a shorter story, only 170 pages, and it read really quickly. Almost too quickly. I felt like the pacing of the plot was too fast and I found myself wishing I was able to sit with the characters a bit longer to develop their stories. I think there needs to be more world developing in order to really understand the motivations of the main characters. Additionally, it ended so quickly I was wanting a better resolution to feel like I had closer. All in all, I think the story has really good bones to be further developed into a really interesting fantasy world, however, in the stage it is in now it read too quickly to really be enjoyed.

The Blizzard’s Secrets has an interesting premise and setting, with the potential to have a unique and enjoyable world if more time was spent building and expanding on it. The main flaw I found with this book was the length; there was so much character and plot development and worldbuilding that definitely needed more space to be adequately explored and done justice. In my opinion, the story would have been much better if it had been spread over 300 pages as opposed to 130. I didn’t feel like I had enough time to come to know the characters and properly follow them on their journeys, so the plot twist didn’t impact me as much as it could have. I would be interested in reading the next release from this author as I felt this had so much potential, and it was pretty well-written; I just hope the pacing of the story is improved.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author for the Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lots of potential, too short.

Plot- 3/5🔆
Spice- 0/5🌶️
Romance-0/5💗

This is a short YA novella featuring Daia as she gets thrown into some political drama. I think this story had so much potential and had a good plot line, but the novella was too short to get much detail out of the story. It felt like things were moving very quickly, concluding perfectly, and overall it gave the story a two dimensional feel to it.

I overall enjoyed the Authors writing, just felt there was too much content jammed into a small novella.

Thank you to net galley and the publisher for a free advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a lot of waste potential according to me. This could have been a full novel instead of a novella.
What confused me is the world setting tbh, like idk if it was set in medevial socity or mordern era. because the speech or speaking style is mordern but the world setting is set in medevial so, It is every confusing. Also, the history or what really happened is not properly explained as well as the timeline. After ther prologue we dont know if the story is dated back before the prologue or after the prologue. I feel like the book needs to be properly edited. Then, it would be a good book.

Everything about this book just felt rather matter-of-fact, two-dimensional, and too convenient in a way that didn't feel like fate, the way the plot would like you to think, but rather like the author was just trying to create twists for the sake of adding twists. There also wasn't enough world building for me, and everything felt very confined to the few people cast in this book, instead of leading me to believe that other people and lives and stories existed in the community outside of these main characters. While I'm sure this series will be for someone, that someone simply wasn't me.

Recieved The Blizzard's Secret from NetGalley. Overall I liked the backbones of this book but I wish that it could have been fleshed out a little bit more. I would have liked more context or backstory on more of the characters to get to know them better. While reading the characters, I felt like I didn't really know them or what could their intentions possibly be so when things happen, I felt more like "is this something this character would do?, I'm not sure". It was a very quick read and I'm interested to see where the cliffhanger goes.

2/5 stars — thank you netgalley, the author and publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review! i really wanted to like it. in fact, i love novellas and short stories, but this wasn’t the one for me. the plot was too convenient, the fmc was way too self aware. it’s like there wasn’t a conflict during the story because she was able to predict most events or had seemingly random suspicions. this is a story that would’ve benefitted from a more fleshed out, better paced plot. there was no worldbuilding and nothing about the characters which really sucked the life out of all of this

I do love a good political thriller and this novella was along those same lines. "The Blizzard's Secrets" by DJanée has just enough intrigue to keep the reader hooked and interesting characters that make the reader (at least this one) want to know more about them. And what I really want is to see where this story goes from here.

I look forward to see what she comes up with next.
