Into Darkness

Rate this book
Victoria Eurille has it pretty good. Also known as Lady Midnight, she's said to be the only metahuman who survived the Malice -- the event two decades ago that wiped out all the other metahumans. Now, she stands relatively unchallenged as she unleashes a one-woman crusade against the people of Haven Falls, and she'll go through anyone who gets in her way.

Lana Blake died, but she likes to say it didn't take. Woken by the enigmatic Arturis Corporation, she finds herself with powers beyond what she ever could have hoped for. She takes the moniker Stardust and sets out on her journey to become the hero Haven Falls needs -- and to avenge her family's deaths at the hands of Lady Midnight.

When Stardust puts herself in the path of Lady Midnight, both women find themselves in uncharted waters, with only each other to keep them afloat. As secrets are revealed and answers come to light, will they come together to overcome their foes. Or will their animosity destroy them both?

The first book in the Heroes and Villains saga. Into Darkness introduces the world to Lady Midnight, the reluctant supervillain, and Stardust, the idealistic hero that means to stop her and their ultimate fight against powers far stronger than them that lurk in the shadows.

4 - This is nearly a 4-person love/hate-relationship square. With secret identities, superheroes and -villains and questionable actions and motivations; the interpersonal entanglements are a fantastic piece of spaghetti.

Why is Midnight so violent? Why has Stardust a personal vendetta? How can Victoria unite all the different emotions? How can Lana find herself? And who is part of what family, ready to protect them against all odds?

What the reader gets with Into Darkness is a meta-human plot with new informations left and right, constantly changing the judgement one might make after an event. And violent action. Where Marvel punches someone, Lady Midnight gouges out eyes. Where Batman might give someone a concussion, some meta-human actually breaks skin and bone.

It's a fun book, and engaging story, exciting plot and a lot very heavy emotions, introspective and morally grey decisions. Just be aware this is a setup for a sequel.

Good story

I really enjoyed the storyline of this book. Very inventive premise. I liked both main characters as well, despite Lady Midnight's supposed evil side I found myself rooting for her several times.
Often with a well written story I can easily overlook a typo here or there but this book seemed to have several. Plus in Chapter 35 three different names were used for the little girl. Easily fixed issues that probably could have been caught by an ARC team if given the chance. Otherwise I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend to others.

A good story for superhero/ supervillain lovers

This fantastical story is very well written with lots of action between supervillain Lady Midnight and wannabe superhero Stardust who go from enemies to possible lovers in the future (?). The fight scenes are so descriptive that it’s almost like you’re watching a movie. There are allusions to BDSM as Lady Midnight’s alter ego Victoria provides a safe space for alternative lifestyle. Except for the gory fight scenes, the story is PG and a little angsty.

too dark for me

For me this novel is too dark, and shows, for me, why its better superheroes should never exist, no one should have those kind of powers
