Wow what a way to kick off 2025 lol I absolutely devoured this book by reading 800 pages in 36 hours and then reading like 250-400 pages every other time I sat down to read. I just simply couldn't stop - this book is like a train wreck you just can't look away from. This book is DARK and its crazy and this author is insane and belongs in an institute but I also belong right there next to her cause I ate this shit UP
Yugeon and Shinjae are so fucking toxic and horrible together and everyone else is absolutely awful but I also need them to be happy for my mental health <3

Okay wtf did I just read?!?! Okay, first of all, I read the manwha, not the novel (god bless bc it was already a lot and reading in more depth...no thanks). TWs for many terrible things ahead. Oh, and spoilers, beware!!!
So, did I start this bc I thought it was gonna be a harem? Yes. Was it a harem? IT WAS TERRIBLE AND IT WAS NOT EVEN A HAREM. Sigh. Did I still read it all? Also yes. Goddam, I really wanted to see them defeat Almuten and to see wtf was inside Mazzaroth. I was intrigued by the plot. I'd honestly thow the romance down the drain.
But okay, first. No harem. Second, all men involved are walking black flags. I was (reluctantly) ready for a red flag? But oh, boy. Just r*pe all across the board. Sigh. Maybe I'm just not made for toxic content anymore (?) Sigh. Still, by the end I just wanted Yageon to RUN THE FUCK AWAY FROM EREWON (except from the nice esper he always had coffe with) and go into a happy life. But, of coourse not, he had to have a "happy ending" with Woo Yenji...no comment.
I also started this bc I wanted to read some completed guideverse (after having started so many ongoing ones) but it backfired. However, the art was really good. I specially enjoyed the anomalies and the gates. And the battles were pretty well done too. On the other hand, I feel the chapters were super short, and there was no development to the characters and the plot went just right in. Oh, and Woo Yenji was just OP, so there were really no stakes. Good thing, I think I contributed to the guideverse in the sense that when Almuten was destoroyed espers and guides just started losing their powers. The society that had been so heavily impacted by the anomalies and the gates had now no use for them. Also, thanks to the lesbians of the other guild for trying to get Yogeon (he was just had too much stockholm syndrome to be able to scape, sigh) out of Erewon.
I think that's all. What this story did well was leaving me with a sense of dread and depression at the end. It is really immersive (booooo), so at then I was just too in the down mood. But, oh well.

Dystopian. Dark. Heavy. Intense. Depressing. Desperate.
But nonetheless, it was a good read.
It was so heavy from start to end. It was steamy, frustrating and depressing almost all at once, but the story flowed nicely. It's a story that keeps you reading 'til the end. There were so many red flags raised and triggerwarnings you need to be aware of in this story but if you can take reading through all of them, I think you'll find a decent read nonetheless.
The undoing, the wrecking and the re-building of each character — especially the MC and each of the MLs (especially the main ML) — was quite the ride. The emotions at play passed through me as I read through too and it was bittersweet at the end, reading about how it all transpired. I like how each character developed throughout the story too.
Probably, if there is one thing I'm quite regretful about it is that Nonetheless, it was a nice ending all the same. It was sweet, intimate and emotional. I like this ending too.
That was a rollercoaster ride. Honestly, I was exhausted after I read this. The emotions are quite intense and well, everything in this book is quite intense, tbvh. But despite this, I enjoyed it thoroughly. I'm glad I got to read this.
But nonetheless, it was a good read.

"The main theme of ‘Profundis’ is love and hate. I wanted to write a story in which the characters who had already lived a miserable life meet each other and proceed to ruin their lives even more, hurt each other, hate each other terribly, but still, I wanted to write a love story nonetheless.
Love and hate are contradictory emotions. But I think it’s also possible that love and hate can exist at the same time.
There are plenty of contradictions in my work.
Almuten means ‘the most powerful star’ in astrological terms. Whenever we think of stars, we always imagine them high up in the sky. However, Mazzaroth, Almuten’s den, is described as the lowest and deepest place (abyss). There’s even a deep sea in Mazzaroth in the place where the sky is supposed to be.
In order to be freed from the abyss (=to rise above the surface), you must first face the abyss (=go down to the very depths).
A guide, who are usually considered useless in raids since they are non-combatants, became essential for killing Almuten.
Shinje intended to die with Yugeon, but changed his mind at the last moment.
Yugeon saved Shinje because he hated and loved Shinje to the point of wanting to kill him.

Σκοτεινό, gore και άγριο, σίγουρα όχι για ανθρώπους που οι ευαισθησίες του "χτυπάνε" εύκολα κόκκινο. Έχει πολύ καλή και γρήγορη ροή, είναι γραφικό ως προς τις απεικονίσεις τους, αρκετά ωμό στις περιγραφές του, αλλά καταφέρνει να σε καθηλώσει από την πρώτη σελίδα. Και σίγουρα σε οδηγεί σε ένα φινάλε που δεν μπορώ να πω με βεβαιότητα πως το περίμενα έτσι δοσμένο, ούτε που αγγίζει τα όρια του "ιδανικού" -οι προϋπάρχουσες καταστάσεις δεν θα επέτρεπαν κάτι τέτοιο-, αλλά που στην προκειμένη περίπτωση, με έναν μαγικό τρόπο, φαντάζει το πιο ιδανικό, ενώ είναι φορτισμένο και γεμάτο λυτρωτικά συναισθήματα.

Sgomberiamo subito il campo dai dubbi: PROFUNDIS, nel corso dei suoi (pochi, ma corposi) 10 capitoli + 3 extra di lunghezza, non ci prova nemmeno a fingere che quello d’intrattenere il pubblico con dettagliate, ardite, talvolta perfino pirotecniche scene di sesso non sia uno degli obiettivi da perseguire con più convinta abnegazione.
La danze a cui l’autrice dà il via, infatti, sono scandite da un erotismo non solo insistito, non solo pensato per abbracciare il più alto numero di pratiche&posizioni possibile, ma anche calibrato con una cura quasi maniacale sulle personalità e, perché no, sulle idiosincrasie di ognuno degli uomini con cui il nostro protagonista si ritrova, volente o nolente, a dividere il letto. Un erotismo, ancora, nient’affatto restìo ad avanzare in bilico lungo il confine che separa il desiderio dalla costrizione, la consapevolezza dalla tendenza a farsi trascinare dagli eventi, l’accettazione dalla rassegnazione – peculiarità, questa, sicuramente destinata a stuzzicare i malumori di un’ampia fetta di lettori (specie nell’eventualità in cui questi si siano tuffati fra le pagine del romanzo confidando in un qualche inno al poliamore), ma mai ammantata da giustificazioni che vadano oltre il mero, dichiaratissimo gusto per il porno a tinte… estreme, più o meno?, o speziata da zuccherini giusto un po’ meno amari di un ombroso, narrativamente coerente elogio del romanticismo distruttivo e autodistruttivo, della ricerca della morte come massima espressione dell’Amore.
Dove l’opera di Eise si dimostra in grado di sovvertire le previsioni suggerite dalla copertina con i quattro maschioni famelici e la vittima sacrificale nel mezzo (?) di cui si diceva, però, è sul versante più puramente fantascientifico della storia… quello, cioè, che alle sequenze piccanti e alla filosofia da drammone ottocentesco finisce per preferire la fotografia di scontri all’ultimo sangue, di mostri dalle forme orrorifiche nel migliore dei casi e assolutamente disgustose nel peggiore, di un’intelaiatura sociale complessa e fortemente discriminatoria nei confronti di chiunque non sia identificabile come un predatore a cui potersi affidare o da cui doversi guardare le spalle. La scrittrice, infatti, presta grande attenzione all’elaborazione di scenari inospitali, perfetti per fare da sfondo ad articolate scene d’azione (che, in termini di rilevanza nell’economia del racconto, nulla hanno da invidiare ai loro corrispettivi di gusto r18), e alla descrizione di anomalie fisiche pensate apposta per essere esposte in un ipotetico Museo del Gore; museo che, non troppo inaspettatamente, si ritrova a fare delle aberrazioni ultraterrene contenute al proprio interno uno specchio atto a riflettere le degenerazioni di quelle – al contrario – umanissime figure la cui bellezza non si rivela sufficiente, a conti fatti, a camuffare livelli tanto elevati di degrado morale.
Viene spontaneo chiedersi, a questo punto, se, all’interno di una simile, opprimente cappa di tossicità e di terrore, faccia mai capolino anche un singolo barlume, se non di comicità vera e propria, perlomeno di buonumore… e la risposta è, tutto sommato, affermativa, a voler prendere in considerazione i tre capitoli speciali con cui Eise dà l’addio ai suoi figliocci problematici: difficile, nello sfogliare le ultime pagine, resistere alla delirante tenerezza della vita domestica sui cui ritmi Yugeon e… uno o più d’uno (non intendo spoilerarne né l’identità né il numero) dei suoi cavalieri si sforzano pian piano di regolarsi, mentre del tutto impossibile risulta esimersi dallo scoppiare a ridere di fronte all’AU arabeggiante, con Yugeon nei panni del sovrano di turno e i quattro cacciatori in quelli delle sue spose/concubine, piazzato, con una certa autoironia, a chiusura dell’intero lavoro...
Sgomberiamo subito il campo dai dubbi: PROFUNDIS, nel corso dei suoi (pochi, ma corposi) 10 capitoli + 3 extra di lunghezza, non ci prova nemmeno a fingere che quello d’intrattenere il pubblico con dettagliate, ardite, talvolta perfino pirotecniche scene di sesso non sia uno degli obiettivi da perseguire con più convinta abnegazione.
La danze a cui l’autrice dà il via, infatti, sono scandite da un erotismo non solo insistito, non solo pensato per abbracciare il più alto numero di pratiche&posizioni possibile, ma anche calibrato con una cura quasi maniacale sulle personalità e, perché no, sulle idiosincrasie di ognuno degli uomini con cui il nostro protagonista si ritrova, volente o nolente, a dividere il letto. Un erotismo, ancora, nient’affatto restìo ad avanzare in bilico lungo il confine che separa il desiderio dalla costrizione, la consapevolezza dalla tendenza a farsi trascinare dagli eventi, l’accettazione dalla rassegnazione – peculiarità, questa, sicuramente destinata a stuzzicare i malumori di un’ampia fetta di lettori (specie nell’eventualità in cui questi si siano tuffati fra le pagine del romanzo confidando in un qualche inno al poliamore), ma mai ammantata da giustificazioni che vadano oltre il mero, dichiaratissimo gusto per il porno a tinte… estreme, più o meno?, o speziata da zuccherini giusto un po’ meno amari di un ombroso, narrativamente coerente elogio del romanticismo distruttivo e autodistruttivo, della ricerca della morte come massima espressione dell’Amore.
Dove l’opera di Eise si dimostra in grado di sovvertire le previsioni suggerite dalla copertina con i quattro maschioni famelici e la vittima sacrificale nel mezzo (?) di cui si diceva, però, è sul versante più puramente fantascientifico della storia… quello, cioè, che alle sequenze piccanti e alla filosofia da drammone ottocentesco finisce per preferire la fotografia di scontri all’ultimo sangue, di mostri dalle forme orrorifiche nel migliore dei casi e assolutamente disgustose nel peggiore, di un’intelaiatura sociale complessa e fortemente discriminatoria nei confronti di chiunque non sia identificabile come un predatore a cui potersi affidare o da cui doversi guardare le spalle.
