Thanks to Bloodhound Books for an ARC of this book.
This was the second book that I have read by this author. The first one was Twelve Days, which I thoroughly enjoyed and can highly recommend
I was hooked from the start of this fast-paced gripping book that was well thought out with great characters.
Roughly half way through this, I was confident that I had worked out what was going on. But this just added to the tension that was building up in the storyline, and raised lots of questions I loved the ending I was definitely not expecting that.
Yet again I can highly recommend this book and I look forward to his next book.
Don't Tell is the second foray into the crime thriller genre for award-winning author Paul Williams and is a twisty and addictive cross between a psychological thriller and a domestic drama. Carrie is married to successful businessman Steve Atwell and one day discovers an earring in his car which she knows is not hers. When she confronts him about it, believing that he's cheating on her, he cannot explain whose it is or why it's in his vehicle and vehemently denies an affair. She wants to trust him but having found him lying numerous times she isnt sure but believes his response to be genuine. He's become secretive and when she finds condoms in his drawer she knows he's up to no good as they don't use them. When the news comes on a young woman’s photo pops up; her mutilated body has been found in the local area and she has exactly the same earrings as the one Carrie accidentally discovered. Thoughts of an affair evaporate and she realises her husband could be the perpetrator. Is she really married to a brutal murderer?
She is flailing and decides to turn to Mike Summers, the lead detective on the case in the hope of proving Steve’s innocence. But soon things spiral out of control and become life-threateningly dangerous for all involved as they try to bring the sadistic killer to justice. This is a compulsive and emotional read, which captures your attention right from the start, and is the all-too-familiar tale of gaslighting and domestic abuse coupled with a sadistic serial killer and the deception and manipulation present in some marriages. It's really quite chilling and you feel for Carrie, who is living anybody's worst nightmare. Initially suspecting her husband, Steve, to be a cheat, breaks her heart but the truth is actually a whole lot worse. Torn between justice and standing by the man she vowed to stick by ”until death do us part”, Carrie is confused beyond belief. A riveting Australian-based thriller with all the twists, tension and paciness needed to delight crime connoisseurs. A highly recommended serial killer thriller.
This book was entertaining for all the wrong reasons. I did not find it full of suspense, but gratingly obvious. The female protagonist, Carrie, was flaky and I wanted to see her comeuppance as a result.
Williams makes it blindingly obvious, far too soon, about who the reader should suspect. It is like it should be written in capital letters. Yet, whilst there are some red-herrings, I could see all too easily what the outcome of the story would be. It was too much of a “showy” narrative and I wanted there to be less obvious threat and more palpable tension.
Carrie’s behaviour was laughable. At times I found myself shaking my head and rolling my eyes because I could not believe how gullible she is. At every step of the way, she is happy to justify her husband’s behaviour. Steve is clearly keeping secrets from her and I found her naivety insufferable. It is a shame that she is the main character because I really could not tolerate her!
Yet, although I found this plot too obvious and rather frustrating, I must admit that I was very keen to see how the story concluded. It is one thing predicting the perpetrator and knowing you are absolutely correct. It is another to see how the puzzle pieces fall into place. This is why I awarded three stars to this story: I thought the final revelations were rather interesting (even if I still found myself huffing over some plot elements). The writer concludes this rather neatly with a soppy-ish ending. I enjoyed watching how answers were revealed and I thought this element was particularly imaginative.
Whilst I found the plot incredibly flaky and full of holes, my true dislike grew towards Mike, the police officer. I totally despised his behaviour and attitudes. I found the portrayal of the police force incredibly far-fetched and wished that Williams had pulled themselves back in and not pushed the realms of realism too far. Mike, in my opinion, belongs in the “character bin” of novels. He is definitely not my favourite.
Look, if you are after an entertaining read, this is for you. If you want a slightly toe-curling, gruesome crime book, this is for you. There’s no hard work required when reading this novel, so you truly get to escape for several hours. For me, however, I just wanted something with a bit more depth and a bit more believable.
With thanks to Bloodhound books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
DON’T TELL is a totally addictive psychological thriller/domestic thriller by author Paul Williams.
Carrie and Steve Atwell have been happily married for fifteen years, but things are soon about to change. While after spending a day out shopping, Carrie discovers a large diamond earring in her husband Steve’s car. At first, she suspects the man she loves is having an affair, but the truth may be far more disturbing.
When Carrie confronted Steve, he said he had never seen it before? What was going on? Steve, a building contractor, spent so much time out of the house, blaming his absence on work obligations and meetings, but Carrie was starting to suspect something wasn’t right. He finally returned home late smelling of booze and perfume?
Carrie reveals to her therapist that she believes Steve is having an affair. Carrie was feeling neglected and lonely.
For the past few months, the young female victims of a brutal killer have been washing up on beaches, bloated and mutilated. A serial killer is on the loose and the public is terrified.
But then Carrie finds something that ties her husband to the first murder victim. Carrie can’t believe that her husband could be capable of such brutal and savage crimes. Her therapist advises her to go to the police, but she loves him, and can’t turn him in.
This was a very well-written crime novel, with relatable characters and a gripping plot. Even though halfway through the book I was confident of the outcome, this did not take away from my reading enjoyment, as I needed to confirm my suspicions.
Many thanks to the author and Bloodhound Books for my digital copy.
Carrie and Steve have been married for 15 years ... basically a good marriage.
Until .....
She finds a lone earring under the car seat ... and it isn't hers. She finds condoms in his night stand ... something they've never used. After a long evening of meetings, he comes home smelling like perfume. An affair? Or something worse?
Young female victims of a sadistic killer have been washing up on beaches. A serial killer is on the loose and people are starting to panic.
Carrie has found something that links her husband to the most recent murder victim... is her husband capable or murder? She knows she should turn him in ... but she still loves him. Deep inside she just can't believe he would do these things.
How well do you really know your husband?
Well written, suspenseful, and good character development ... all boxes checked. I do admit I didn't have to get to the ending to figure out what was what ... but it did not deter me from enjoying the book.
Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
If I had a dollar for every time the word "gaslighting" was used in this book, I could quit my job. These characters have no depth. I was very disappointed in this one.
After finding an earring in her husband’s car, Carrie thinks her husband Steve is having an affair. This is something which he vehemently denies. She wants to trust him, but he is so secretive, he is always lying to her, and he is never where he says he is. So what is the truth?
But when the mutilated body of a young woman is found Carrie’s world begins collapsing around her. Staring at the TV screen in disbelief at the face of the dead young woman, she realises that she has an earring in her possession identical the one the girl was wearing in the picture.
She doesn’t know where to turn, and decides to do her own investigations. Confused and out of her depth, she decides to enlist the help of Mike Summers, the lead detective on the case. She needs his help, she needs him to hopefully prove that Steve is innocent, but as everything is starting to point to Steve being the killer, she needs him to protect her.
About half way through I had pretty much worked out what was going on, but all this did was add to the rising tension that was building up in the storyline, as this still left me with unanswered questions that I had.
Cleverly written, gripping and fast-paced all the way through.
This is the second book that I have read by this author, the first one being Twelve Days, which I highly recommend.
Oy Vey. This book had so much promise and, honestly, the first several chapters dug their nails into me (in a good way). About 3/4ths through the book the obvious becomes obvious...but no spoilers here. Here are my issues with Don't Tell:
1). The characters are so flat. None are likable or endearing. They were not well-developed. I found them all to be a bit off-putting.
2). I had to suspend quite a bit of belief regarding the relationship between Carrie, the main character, and Mike, a police sergeant. I'm not talking about a romantic relationship. I'm referring to how they interacted with one another about the cases of the murdered girls. I get the author needed to add layers in order to build mystery, but some of their conversations were completely asinine. I found myself saying often to myself, "Carrie, girl, you're dense." In fact, aside from one female character, all the women seemed to lack average intelligence.
3). The first half of this book was pretty good, though I quickly grew tired of the use of the words "gaslighting", "Carrie", "affair", and "love". About 2/3rds through I more or less knew what was going on, but I was still committed to finishing it and hoped for one last big twist. However, soon after the story took a sharp turn from ridiculous to completely outrageous. Literally, I had to skim the last 40+ pages because the story dragged unnecessarily on and got rather silly. It feels so thrown together. Imagine a Lifetime movie that, in the last 20 minutes, turns into a Jason Statham signature film. Yeah... it did that.
There was so much about this story that I didn't gel with. Take my review with a grain of salt. Many have enjoyed this book.
Carrie finds an earring in her husbands car and quite reasonably suspects he's having an affair. He looks confused when she confronts him with it and she believes him when he says he's never seen it before. Young girls, all similar, blonde, young, slim, have been turning up dead and mutilated, washed out to sea like trash. When a picture shows the earrings of one of the dead girls matches the one she found in her husbands car, she doesn't know what to do. Steve doesn't help himself by not coming clean, he denies an affair but when Carrie checks up on his whereabouts she finds out he's been lying to her. The book follows the investigation and its so cleverly written that so many clues and red herrings are written throughout that you believe one story and then another. Even after all that I never predicted the end. This is the first of Paul's books I've read and I will make sure I read all of them in future.
It all started with a lone earring found in Carrie Atwell's husband's car. This starts her mind wondering what Steve is up to. Is he having an affair? He totally denies this, but then Carrie starts to notice other things that all point to him having an affair. She even talks to her therapist about this and even the therapist says it looks like he is. While surfing the news, Carries sees a young girl who is missing with the exact earring! Things are not looking good for the Atwells at all! But when a dead body is discovered, that pushes Carrie over the edge to where she goes to the police about her husband's involvement. Is Carrie married to a murderer? Is Steve innocent? There is a huge twist I did not see coming in this story! I would like to thank Bloodhound Books for a copy of this book that I voluntarily reviewed. AWESOME!!!
What would you do if you found a single earring under the seat of your husband’s car and it wasn’t yours? This is the unfortunate situation that Carrie finds herself in. Her husband’s behaviour has changed; Steve is slowly drifting away from her and he’s spending more time at work. Under normal circumstances Carrie would never believe that Steve would cheat on her but as she starts to dig a little deeper could infidelity be a welcome outcome to what horrors she’s slowly unravelling.
When the bodies of young women start to wash up on their local beaches Carrie starts to question where her husband is really spending his evenings. With all the evidence stacking up against him Carrie is faced with the choice of keeping quiet or contacting the authorities, but will it be too late?
I saw it coming together in the end but it was still a great read that had me on the edge of my seat.
There are not many books I don't finish, I think maybe 2 or3 in 70 years, but this one I really had to force myself to keep reading. Never have I read such unadulterated rubbish. I used to live in Noosa Tewantin so was quite excited to find a book set in this area, there my excitement ended. Unbelievable characters, picked the murderer as soon as he arrived, the husband was the most insipid idiot, and the wife so bloody dense and gullible it was quite laughable. No twists in it for me, except maybe the sick twists of the writers mind, which was said with such blaseness it was like reading from a bad political speech. I won't be reading anything else from Paul Williams. At the end the publisher asks the reader to report typos, there were a few, but I sure as hell wasn't going back to find them.
Carrie finds an earring, she smells perfume on her husband and he’s out all hours. This points to an affair, right? But it’s about to get a lot worse. There’s a serial killer out there and the clues point to her husband, Steve. Carrie’s character is so gullible and childish, Steve promising to make it up to her, and then there’s her Detective friend who is taking matters into his own hands and making a mockery of the police force. The book is gruesome too, with body parts being removed from the victims as souvenirs. This book is so badly written that it’s almost good! Lots of repetitive narrative, unbelievable characters and a far-fetched plot. BUT somehow I kept reading and didn’t give up on it, which must say something.
Wow! What an amazing well-planned thriller! Paul Williams is a new-to-me author, but I can assure you that I would be happy to read more of his books! What seems to be true throughout the entire book becomes a ride to all of the characters involved. This could easily be a true crime book, and the ending is fabulous! I didn't catch on for a long time, and those are the thrillers that I most enjoy! I would highly recommend this book to all of my reading friends who can't get enough thrillers. It has enough hire to make it interesting, but not overwhelming! Thanks, Paul Williams for a most entertaining book!
This is one of several books I have read by Paul Williams, and once again I am impressed by his talent, style, storytelling, and versatility. His thriller "Twelve Days" was such a page turner that I read it in one (1!) day. "Don't Tell" is just as captivating, which is to say that I read it also in one day. At a time when many of us feel compelled to check the news constantly for updates on everything from elections to the pandemic, this novel offers a welcome respite. Paul Williams is a gifted storyteller. And the twists and turns in this novel won't disappoint: Just when you think you know whodunnit, you may have to think again.
I enjoyed this suspenseful thriller story. This is a fast paced story that I found to be engaging and easy to read. This is a story full of action and sitting on the edge of suspene. This is a well written story that has details that bring the story to life. This is a story about Carrie and Steve who have been happily married for years. But what happens when Carrie finds an earring in Steve's car? Is it an affair or is there something more? The characters are connectable and really made the story for me. I highly recommend this book.
This is the 1st book by Paul, I have read. The idea is a good one, but omg, it could be half the size. So Annoyingly repetitive, both, in words and descriptions. Although It is supposed to be a"Psychological Thriller " , the way it's written made It feel like I was reading a children's book, constantly saying the same things, on the same page, dragging it out. Almost like a reminder but you don't need reminding of something you read a few lines a go. To me this took away the "Gripping Thriller" aspect .
Okay. Had to give it five stars because I couldn't put it down. Well written, well fleshed out characters. But here's the thing: I can't believe the ending. It just doesn't add up. It is not believable. Carrie may be the most naive woman in fiction, or right up there in the top ten. I kept wondering why she put up with her husband's distancing and neglect. It is still a question, even after everything. So read it. Its a thriller and you will stay up late reading.
if you’re looking for a strong, extremely suspenseful book, look no further! this has everything. Action, extreme suspense, betrayal, and mystery! That is just the tip of the iceberg. The best thing about this book is, the extremely surprising twist at the end! You will not be disappointed.
The book started of great really got into it then it went a bit silly and very unprofessional and unbelievable the writer should have stuck with the beginning after that it got a bit silly and threw me of, starts really well then goes of on another silly idea no I would not recommend as a good read.
3.5 stars. The villain could have been only one of two people, and I identified him correctly. But the author still manages to create enough uncertainty throughout to keep the tension going, so a bit of predictability doesn't really matter. The characters are forgettable and the main character is irritatingly stupid but, again, the suspense makes it worth the read. Enjoyable popcorn read.
While this was really a page turner the end was kinda expected and the main character was such an air head. Still a good book and a good read but, I was ready for more thrill at the end.
Very compelling book, follows the serial killer at work and a wife playing at detective. Questions relationships, ghosts from a past life and the trust we have in the police. Twists and turns along the way, well worth reading.
This book had lots of promise and I whizzed through it to start with but it became obvious and I worked out whodunit. I found myself getting very frustrated with Carrie that she couldn’t see what was right in front of her. I still enjoyed it though

Well I didn’t expect that!! Ok, I read in one sitting the suspense....but the wife is dim, dull, boring and stupid. But the story was worth it. I didn’t expect the end.
