*arc received for an honest review*

So I like the book this book seemed to be in the first 34%. I give that book 4 maybe even 5 stars because the chemistry was so endless and wholesome. They were hopeless, but they had each other.
Nicole is a very good writer, and she knows what she's doing. I get that. I respect that! She really knows how to work the angst. Perhaps I wasn't ready. After 34%, it turned into a whole different book. My opinion is: if she'd done this from the start, I'd totally be on board with the second book. But with the first 34% and then the rest of the book being so different, there was just too much for me to handle. Honestly, as much as I loved the first 34%, I would've removed it and had the situation from after 34% be there from the start. Not the start, but like as the inciting moment or whatever. I'm not giving a lower rating because this was a good book full of heartbreak, and I recognize that. Just because it didn't work for me, it doesn't mean it deserves three stars or something.
But...... freaking Dane. What a character!!! He's my highlight.

Shaw and Cater, what a amazing story of best friends to lovers 🥺.

Nicole has this way of writing such real situations so spectacularly to the point that you hurt with the characters you feel for them, you morn with them, you fall in love with them as they are fall in love. And this story was no different in fact I think every one of my emotions came out to play with this book, I felt annoyance but understanding at Shaw’s decisions. I felt anger and hurt at they loss they endured. I felt strength and pain at her choices to do what she felt was best for the one she loved. And utterly I felt the joy love and loss of these characters.

Over all if your looking for emotions, a story of strength, perseverance, and love well this is definitely for you!

AMAZING!! PHENOMENAL!! MUST READ!!
Have you ever had to fight just to survive, or put food on your table, or pay the bills? Well Shaw, Carter and Dane had to. You always pay a price for something. Whether that be your heart, soul, or even your life you pay a price. In true Nicole form she, once again, pulled sooo hard on my heart. She even broke it at one point where I had to put the book down for a while before I could continue. I wouldn't have it any other way. I hope you're ready for this book. This book digs so deep into your soul you may not make it back out. Be prepared. Have the tissues and chocolate ready. I promise you will fall in love with Carter and Shaw. But you will also love Dane. Nicole did a phenomenal job at writing their story. I felt EVERY. SINGLE. EMOTION the characters went through. The ending was perfect. Bravo Nicole on another AMAZING book.

“Sometimes hope is more painful than just facing reality.”

This story was gritty, beautiful, sweet and angsty. A story of two friends who face the adversities life throws at them and brave everything to come together.

What I loved :

💓 Shaw- She was a really strong woman. One might call her a pessimist, jaded or a weak person but as per me, she was a realist and knew how to play the game that's life. Nobody benefits from rose-tinted glasses, that's for sure. She changed and adapted as per her situations and that's a big thing.

💓 Dane - Dane was .... beautiful💔 He was a beautiful and loyal person who knew what others needed and gave it to them. I loveee him. Nicole, you wicked person you.

What I didn't like:

🥀 Carter - It's not that I didn't like Carter, I did. It's just....Carter seemed more like a side character. I felt that this book was more about Shaw and her strength than Shaw and Carter as a couple. So, Carter got left at the sidelines

🥀 The ending- The ending of the story feels incomplete and anticlimactic somehow. First of all, there are no answers as to what job Carter picked up in the end. Second, I REALLY can't believe Aiden just let go of Shaw like that. Third, even if we somehow believe that he DID let her go, he still should have been territorial enough to get her killed (it's a "if i can't have her, no one else can" thing). How they end up safe at the end doesn't make sense. Or maybe I was expecting something else, idk. The end wasn't fulfilling for me.

I'm sure if you're a fan of Dykes then you've kinda gotten a feel for her storytelling. She writes the most beautiful love stories... This my friends is not that.

She's slowly starting to turn to the dark side. We got a taste for it in Clarity.. this darkness that's simmering underneath the hearts and roses we've all come to know and love from her writing... The darkness is slowly starting to bleed through.

In Fight, Dykes gave up on the gradual dipping of her toes in the world of nitty gritty.. she dives head first into the deep end without a life vest but no worries.. no need to throw out the life saver... She is a gold medalist at this high dive!

Reader friends you are going to fall so in love with these characters.. truthfully you have zero chance of doing anything else.

Shaw is fierce, no other heroine ever written will be able to compare to her. Her life is no picnic in the park. She's had to work hard her whole life. She's strong and determined and she still believes in fairy tales.

Carter's a street rat, living in the gutter. Fighting to find ways to pay the bills and keep himself and the ones he loves floating. He's seen what real life has in store for him and knows fairy tales are just that... Tales.

These two are dealt blow after blow and continue to push back and Fight.

I love all of Dykes work but I'm gonna confess... This darker side she's embracing makes for some spectacular reading!

Thank you to Wildfire Marketing Solutions and Nicole Dykes for an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.

I went back and forth on my rating of a four or five star, but I am going with five. I read over half of the book in one sitting and was completely absorbed in it. The only reason I stopped was to sleep and I had to be up early. For that reason, I thought a five was justifiable.

I went into this story blind. I like that with romances and this did not disappoint. Carter and Shaw (and Dane) were everything to each other. They were best friends, growing up in a hard, tough world. This is their story of survival. Their journey is not an easy one and the choices they make are questionable. But, they are eighteen/nineteen years old and are doing what they have to do with little to no parental guidance. The story is steamy, full of angst, and on the darker side. It is definitely worth the ride to a happy ever after.

I had the privilege of editing this wonderful book. It took me by surprise - I didn't know which way these characters were going to go and that in itself kept me glued to the pages.

FIGHT is an angsty, friends to lovers romance that is steamy, emotional and will pull you right in from the start! Carter & Shaw are longtime friends from broken and low income families/homes. They have fought their entire lives to keep food in their bellies and a roof over their heads. They have come to lean on each other and as they grow older and unsuspecting tragedies occur, they need each other more than ever before. Their connection is so deep, but they are both afraid of damaging their friendship, and holding the other back from moving on and going after their dreams and goals.

This story is heartbreaking, surprising, and may push your boundaries. But it is all worth it in the end. Bravo N Dykes for writing a story that reminds us all to fight for what we want!!

I’m not gonna lie to you - this is a difficult one to read. My heart went out to these characters so many different times. Shaw especially had me wanting to shake some sense into her.
A few things I weren’t expecting to happen did and Nicole had me hating her. What the heck Nicole?!?!

If you're looking for a raw, gritty, New Adult love story that sucks you in from the very start than Fight is the book for you.

Fight is the story of Shaw and Carter who have not had it easy in life. They're best friends who have known each other since they were small children and have been fiercely loyal and protective of one another since they first met on the playground. The third member of their trio, Dane, came along shortly after they first met and things have been equally tough for him growing up. Now, the three are in high school but living much more adult lives, working hard to pay bills and support their families.

I loved the dynamic and close relationship between Shaw, Carter and Dane. Each of their characters wound up being not what they first seem and I loved reading as their story unfolds. The connection between the three of them is palpable, especially Shaw and Carter... but it's so very complicated as the story progresses.

Shaw is a bit of a dreamer, despite her circumstances. She works hard and is realistic about her life but she can't help but hold out hope for a love that feels like a fairytale from a movie. Despite this, she is grounded in reality which is why when Aiden comes along she is skeptical.

This book is raw and heartbreaking. It's tragic and yet the relationship between Shaw, Carter and Dane is beautiful. It's a multilayered and complicated love story about fighting through life. The only reason this wasn't a perfect 5 star read for me was because I felt like the dynamic with Aiden and Shaw was rushed. He seemed to come out of nowhere and before a connection could develop or be felt, he was sweeping her off of her feet. Still, despite this, I couldn't put this book down. I was completely sucked in from the start and invested in Shaw's story.

Oh my angst loving heart! Nicole Dykes brought out big guns for sure in this amazing story called Fight. A bit dark. Whole lot of raw and gritty. Flood of feels and I don't know what to do with them.

Shaw and Carter are the best friends. In whole world. And their world is a tough one. Each day is a fight for survival. They come from the poor, the desperate and the hopeless side of the society. But they always had each other. As they grow up, the little hope in them get squashed as they realize they need to make some difficult choices. But they are ready to fight.

This story was on the darker side. A lot of shocking and gut wrenching things will happen. You will be cursing the author for dragging you through this angsty hell. Shaw is an amazing girl. She is the strongest and the fiercest. She sacrificed so much for her family even when it broke her. My heart was breaking for her too. Carter..HE JUST STOLE MY HEART. He is all kinds of dark and edgy. He doesn't wear rosy glasses and he knows he has to do whatever he can to protect Shaw. And he did. They have incredible connection. That kind that pierces your heart and makes you bleed emotions. It was a rocky road. A rollercoaster ride. Half the time I was screaming inside "What the hell is happening? HOW COULD YOU DO THAT?" It was not pretty. It was messy and intense and violent. And very very real.

Fight by Nicole Dykes is the very definition of angsty romance. It's a journey with ugly truths and difficult choices but it also shows the beauty of epic love.

This book is dark, gritty and at times, not pretty. It makes you uncomfortable and see sides of people you don’t wanna see. In the end, Carter and Shaw’s journey is tough, full of growth, life lessons, loss and love. This book is not a light read but will stay with you. I’m pretty emotionally exhausted now. 😂

"So, I keep my eyes closed and I stay in that world for the rest of the night. With Dane and Carter."

What a raw, gritty and emotional read from Nicole Dykes. I have to be honest, it took me a few days to process this read because it was heavier and darker than I was originally expecting. But I came to realize that I was having many of these emotions because of just how realistic this story was. The highlight of this story for me was Shaw- she basically ripped my heart right out of me chest. Her friendship with Carter and Dane really grounded her for the first half of the book but then what she had to endure for the second half had me in tears. I was definitely glad we got Carter's POV as well and I appreciated when he stepped in to being Shaw's emotional support. The additional characters were very well written and I loved Shaw's mother. The ending felt slightly rushed but the epilogue was pure perfection. Definitely read this for a gripping and realistic romance (and make sure to pay attention to the trigger warnings)!

How absolutely perfect. This was a journey. A REALLY important one.
Broken people, people trod on by life, just trying to find their way out of the muck, into something that makes them happy.
Many of y’all aren’t going to be happy with their journey. You’re going to pick apart flaws, decisions made, roads taken, and to that, I’d simply counter with; could you do better? In these positions, could you have made a better choice, something that would have given this result? Because, if not, then quite honestly, your judgment has no place here.
I have none. This was absolutely incredible.

Ok, so... wow! This book SHATTERED ME!!! Dane, Shaw and Carter were such strong characters and they tore me apart. I got worried for a second that I wasn’t going to like the outcome because I was having a hard time seeing how any good could come of it, but I ended up loving it so! One of my favorite things about Nicole’s books is that they are so real. You know these exact things happen to people every day and may have even happened to you at times and it makes you realize both the evils and the wonderful things in this world. This book was definitely a little darker than you may be used to from Nicole but still has that feel where you notice her writing style. I’m just going to go put all the pieces of my heart back together so I’m ready for the next time she breaks me.

Dykes best work to date! I can honestly say this is my favorite story from this author!! No one can break me so thoroughly, then somehow manage to put the pieces back together like Nicole Dykes.

Fight is so aptly named, as it is a tale full of fighting... the fight to survive, the fight for friends/family, the fight for love. The characters are ones that you just fall for immediately and want, no NEED to protect with every fiber of your being.

There is so much more to say about this book but I feel nothing would do it justice. Instead I will just say:

GO READ THIS BOOK NOW!!

I love Nicole. When she sent this book she was worried it wasn’t what she normally wrote and people would be mad. She’s crazy y’all. This book was all the things. It was sad, angsty, heart breaking, heart warming, beautiful and messy. It is fanatical written, raw and real. Are there triggers and things that will make you cringe and want to scream at the characters? Yes yes there are but to tell this beautiful story I feel like the struggle is needed because if there’s no struggle then there’s no fight. It’s beautiful broken and worth every moment!

"It was perfect because it's real and it's us.

'Fight' was an emotional punch in the gut and I am totally here for it!

This book follows Shaw and her two best friends Carter and Dane. Their bond is strong because even as kids they never had an easy life. But because they had each other, they had their happy moments even though life kept giving them hardships. Shaw and Carter are slowly becoming more than friends, but when tragedy strikes being together just isn't enough to deal with the pain. And even Shaw, who was the opportunistic one of their group has lost hope of a better life. This gets worse when she makes some choices that lead to bad consequences and she feels like all her strenght is used up. However, Carter is there is remind her that she's steel and she must fight..

This book was unputdownable, real and will give you all the feels! It is about survival when you are in a hopeless place. It is a bit dark, friends to lovers romance that deals with sensitive subjects. This is my second book by Nicole and I can't wait to read more!

What a start to 2021 with this amazing book, Fight, being released!

I definitely love Nicole Dykes, someone needs to give her a crown for being the queen of angst.

Fight is an incredible read with so much to feel while reading. I loved every second, don’t get me wrong there were times where I wanted to yell at Nicole but Shaw’s story was worth every second.

Fight isn’t your average romance book where money troubles aren’t mentioned or the hero is rich and nice but it was really realistic in the sense that people struggle to make ends meet and sometimes that’s still not enough so they have to do things they might not want to but have to for their loved ones. I appreciate how real and raw this book was.

Carter and Shaw’s story isn’t for the faint of heart but if you love angst, dark gritty romance, and characters who are made of steel you should definitely check this book out.

Because no matter where we are, we’re always together.

First and foremost I was so engrossed in the whole plot and storyline. The character's motivation will captivate you from the get-go till the very end.

I just wanna give my two cents about Shaw's ' being dumb or weak for going back with Aiden', for me personally I do not agree with her decision, but at the same time, you shouldn't condemn her for being naive and fool deeming her background.
She was just trying to survive and if the resort comes knocking on your door you grab it instantly.

She was abused and a victim of manipulation and let's face it as a woman we are bound to be decreed by our emotions it was innate and reality.

Oh Wow this story had me gripped.
I went through so many emotions as I read this book...Sadness,frustration,distress and joy.
Shaw,Carter and Dane are friends for life or so they thought, because life hasn't dealt them a fair hand.
Everything is a fight to make it through...Fighting to eat,to pay bills and to keep warm.Nothing is easy and this story isn't easy either, it deals with tough subjects that made me feel so much for these characters.
Shaw and Carters Romance is not a traditional Love story,it is raw and exasperating they are meant to be together but circumstances just won't give them a break.
I really Loved Shaw,Carter and Dane the 3 of them and their friendship was something that was enviable they look out for one another, care for eachother and are so comfortable together.
I enjoyed reading this book even though I found myself crying for a portion of the story..it took me on a bumpy ride thats for sure...but by the end left my heart happy.
Nicole did what she always does writes a real ,addictive, angsty and enthralling romance that had me reading and reading and reading because I found it hard to put down.
This is an exceptional book that is unforgettable.

Holy heck! This is very different from the typical romance novels that Nicole Dykes writes. You will need a few things before you read this. Several pairs of panties. The sex scenes In This book are scorching! The next thing you will need is a box of kleenexes. The emotions in this book can bring you to your knees. You will fall in love with the main characters. Shaw and Carter do not have an easy life, however they protect each other and they fight for one another fiercely. Nicole creates raw and genuine heartache throughout the book. She writes about a very sensitive subject such as physical abuse and absolutely killed it. She seemed to knew her topic well and must of had inside knowledge of how someone feels going through the same thing. The last thing you will need is Tylenol. You will definitely have a book hangover after reading this. I love their story and highly recommend this book!

4.5 star rating

This was a pretty quick read. Lots of sadness. Some romance. But, hopefulness. Lives were changed when hardships occur. Life was tough for these three kids. As time goes by, their lives are still difficult. But, their friendship holds them together until something tragic takes place; forever changing their lives. You will shed a few tears. But, as time passes, the tragedy brings about change. Change that is hard for all to accept. I had a few questions that were not answered by the end of the book, which brings about the 4.5 star rating. But holy hotness, this was scorching! And, provocative. A love story not to be missed! Read it in one sitting...

The title doesn't match the content.
There IS fighting, but it's not the main subject of the book
I did enjoy the beginning where the relationship dynamics of Carter, Shaw and Dane were shown in a way that I support their little found family.

But as the story progress, it seems to veer off course?
I did enjoy it enough to give it 3 stars, but I just didn't felt that the story flow very well.
I wasn't invested in the story, it felt like it was there just for the sake of the plot. I couldn't feel any depth to it.

However, I did enjoy the characters, and would have loved if the author explored more of the friendship dynamics of Carter, Shaw and Dane, and have them slowly steer their relationship into uncharted territory: romantic feelings for each other.(All 3 of them)
I think that would have been interesting to read about, especially since Dane is attracted men.

Well this is NOT Pretty Woman! And its not any of those romantic comedies that us girls tend to watch and love and rewatch again. This is a real gritty tale of life that brings you to your knees. Emotional and gut wrenching . . . Yet a perfectly warped HEA.

Whether you are a fan of Nicole or a new reader, I think this will hit you hard and make you a total fan! There are no holds barred and you fight just to get through the rollercoaster of emotions this story draws out. . . But it's worth it. Every chapter, every event, every character in this book is absolute perfection. I have never cried so much while reading a book. I have never felt so emotionally captivated while reading . . . Whether is was feeling completely lost, in total grievance, fueled with hatred, or the all encompassing love. This book is the best read of 2021 so far and I dont think anything can top it.

Do not hesitate to grab this! Its a total knock out and a perfect ugly cry to reread when you just need to feel!

You can always count on this author to give some good angst and with this book she did not disappoint! Fight takes a bit of a walk on the darker side of romance but is a beautifully written story.

Carter and Shaw have been friends since forever and even though they grew up on the hard side of life they had each other. Throughout this book that friendship is tested in the most heartbreaking of ways. They learn some crazy hard lessons but realize if you ride it out and just wait your time will come.

I really enjoyed this book and although some transitions I thought were a bit rushed (I really wanted more of Shaw and her strength at the end) it is a definite MUST read!

Shaw and Carter have been best friends since childhood, and with neither of them having an easy they know they could only rely on each other and have each other’s backs. Bring into the trio Dane who has not had an easy life either. This is a well written dark story which is an emotional roller coaster journey throughout, and is raw, gritty, intense, heartbreaking, and with angst, loyalty, and challenges, which all lead to a steamy and all-consuming riveting and addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I recommend for all. Be aware they may be triggers for some due to the sensitive content!!

Five sharp stars! This book will cut you deep…

Oh my Lord, where has Nicole Dykes been all my life? I can’t believe I haven’t read her books before. I’m happy I discovered her on time for her new release and believe me when I say that she blew my mind! I felt like I’ve lost a piece of my heart. I’m not sure where to start with how much I loved my first read from this talented author. I burned for this beautiful and broken book. A gripping, heart-hitting, tantalizing and angsty story that grabs you from the first page and never lets you go.

While reading this book, I got to a point where my heart ached because of the characters, I felt the pain and misery as they were mine. It was like all my emotions came out to play. Fight is like a shard of glass glitters and shines and then cuts deep. Shaw Carter and Dane took a piece of my heart that I don’t want it back. It’s sad to admit that everyone has to pay a price for their dreams, high or low but you always have to pay. That’s what this broken and complex character faced in the roughest way possible. Because it seemed that silence and pain are all they have.

This is the story of Shaw, Carter and Dane who have not have an easy life. They met since they were children and the bound between them grew stronger with time. They have been fiercely loyal and protective of one another since the day one. Now they are in high school trying to survive and living much more adult lives, working hard to pay the bills and put food on the table to support their families. The domestic intimacy and close relationship between Shaw, Carter and Dane is palpable, especially between Shaw and Carter but it is very complicated as the story progress.

Shaw is a dreamer, Carter is a protector and Dane made the things between them softer, making them laugh of the roughness of life just like a fleeting spark. Despite her circumstances, Shaw can’t help and hold out hope for a love that feels like a fairy tale from a movie. She works hard and is realistic about her life and she is a little bit sceptical when the prince came along to provide and take care of her and her mother, even when that prince turns to be a wolf. Carter and Dane always protected her but destiny had other plans for these best friends. Cater never believed in love until he grieved and found himself wanting more from the girl he always cared. The life of these three is like a web that trapped their dreams, hope and love. The loss, the bad decisions and the struggle tainted them.

Fight is worth all the stars! Dykes’s passionately poignant prose became my drug. She took one of my favourite tropes (friends to lovers) to a new level that walks a thin line to the dark side. The realness in this book is refreshing. It pictured real problems that people face in the real world. Sensitive subjects that society never treat the way it should be because you never know the pain and agony hidden in someone else smile.

What will you read in the pages of this book? You will read a rough friends to lovers romance that is angsty, steamy, emotional and will pull the strings of your heart. This book will play with your emotions right from the start. A must read that will change you and will consume you whole.

Wow

This book definitely took me on a journey. I felt for Shaw and Carter. Their journey definitely had its ups and downs. But I loved it from the very beginning all the way to the end. Their connection and relationship was strong and the title “Fight” definitely goes for them. They fought through all the way to the end. Nicole Dykes has not disappointed and I can’t help but love the characters in all her books I’ve read so far. Getting closer and closer to reading them all. Definitely recommend!

I was generously given an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

h: Shaw
H: Carter
(Dual POVs)

Shaw and Carter have been friends since they were 5 years old when Carter stood up for Shaw on the school playground. Dane joined the duo a year later and the three of them have been inseparable best friends ever since. Each grows up in a broken household fighting to get by and they take solace in each other, take care of each other and look out for one another.

Nicole always knows how to hit you where it hurts and Fight was no different! This book was riddled with pain. Nicole said she pushed some of her boundaries while writing Shaw and Carter’s story and I feel like she pushed mine too! I always appreciate being taken to the edge of my comfort zone and testing the waters a bit!

Shaw has a lot of pride and will go to great lengths to not have to ask people for help. I admired her strength and selflessness to help her mother, even if it was at her own expense. She will go to dark depths to care for the people she loves which lands her in some unhealthy situations. I liked the fact that this book touched on the topic of fairytales vs reality. Shaw believes in fairytales and dreams of the day where a wealthy man might sweep her off her feet and take care of her so she doesn’t have to constantly struggle to make ends meet any more. But the harsh reality is, the types of fairytales that we read in books or watch on tv are fictional.
