Which reality are you living in? Running to save the life of his son, Ryan Walker and the Reverend Daniel McGovern are transported to another reality by an enigmatic blue ripple that suddenly appears on the Tyne Bridge. For Walker, this reality provides everything he has ever desired except for the complications caused by the death of his ex-wife. For the Reverend, the other reality is absolute Hell, a Hell that is tearing his vulnerable soul apart. Murder, blackmail, dark eroticism and a dangerous religion threaten the sanity of the two men but there is a way back to their own reality, a possible window of opportunity that could enable them to return… Will they realise this in time though as both men are slowly being consumed by their alternate personalities. "Richard Valanga writes about the Afterlife like nobody else today. He's the 21st-century Dante of the North." – Tony Barrell, The Sunday Times.
Having already read Sunderland born and bred author, Richard Valanga’s previously engaging ‘Complex’ trilogy and his standalone novel ‘Blind Vision’, I’d been excitedly awaiting his latest publication “The Wrong Reality” for some time now. The author’s talent for writing engaging tales of the paranormal is second to none and I always find his stories entertaining and convincing. “The Wrong Reality” starts with Ryan Walker running to save his son’s life when he and the Reverend Daniel McGovern are transported to another reality by an enigmatic blue ripple that suddenly appears on the Tyne Bridge. For Ryan, this reality provides everything he has ever desired except for the complications caused by the death of his ex-wife. For the Reverend, the other reality is absolute Hell, a Hell that is tearing his vulnerable soul apart. Told through the first person of Ryan and Daniel in alternating chapters with insights into Ryan’s son, Robert and his girlfriend Emily, I really enjoyed getting into the main characters minds, both were equally as interesting with their own completely different lives. I could certainly feel the emotion the author was conveying in the opening chapters, Robert’s grief and anxiety was palpable and made for a very strong start to an ingenious storyline. By the author’s own admission - this book dedicated to his late son Carl - was a very personal journey to date for him to write, you can tell it’s come from deep in his heart, even finding it so difficult to compose the first few chapters he waited until the book was finished to complete them. Richard Valanga’s talented and imaginative writing style is so suited to the supernatural genre and this together with a mix of horror and dark eroticism, “The Wrong Reality” is proof of his superb eclectic ability to engage his readers in a truly alternative world. Set in my local and surrounding areas of Sunderland, it was lovely to be able to relate to the places mentioned, which allowed me to vividly picture the whole story from start to finish. I also have to say that I found the denouement delicately pricked at my emotions and with a last sentence to leave the story open for a possible further return to Ryan’s perfect world, I do hope to see a follow up to this interesting and enjoyable story. If you’re new to Richard Valanga, I wholeheartedly suggest reading his other books too, they’re all a fabulous read and I wish him every success with this his latest and for me his best novel yet!
