Collects Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #90-100 including the 2019 Free Comic Book Day issue, Macro-Series: Raphael, and the Shredder In Hell mini-series.
Volume 13 of IDW's hardback edition of their TMNT run is very special because it goes up to issue 100, which is where I left off with the single issues and decided to go all-in with their collected books.
While this collects more than just the numbered Ongoing issues this feels like the most contained volume in a while as we get a solid build-up and a conclusion.
Everything has been building to the ending of this for years. You could say since issue 50 but I'd argue parts of it have been brewing even earlier than that. Here things are ramped up expedentially. City at War is an aptly named title for the final few numbered issues as the conflicts we've been seeing for so long come crashing together. Not that the books ever go too long without giving a revelation in some form but here there are huge life changing moments for the characters. There's returns (some I didn't remember at all because it's been a while), exits and moments in between that will make for fascinating reading going forward.
As well as the 11 Ongoing issues we got the Free Comicbook Day issue which I'd never read. It's obviously shorter than a standard issue and wasn't anything mind-blowing but it did bridge a gap between two issues that I didn't realise I wanted.
And then finally we got the mini-series, Shredder in Hell. The last time I read it was in singles and I had to read it in monthly (or bi-weekly, can't remember) which wasn't the most enjoyable experience I've had with the series. Having it all here in a single volume made for a much more coherent and enjoyable read. I still found it a little bloated and was ready for it to be done by the time I got to issue 4 but it was an important part of the story and I wouldn't have omitted it.
A solid volume. A character I've not been happy with for a while became even more brutal before coming back to themselves. A couple of shocking character moments I didn't remember and didn't see coming occurred and I was left very excited to see where IDW take things going forward. Despite not loving Shredder's mini-series I can't take a rating off as it was very important
I’m sad I finished this so quickly, because it was pretty incredible.
Holy fucking shit.
Issue #100 of TMNT is the culmination of the whole run, and it’s ex-fucking-plosive. Jesus. I have goosebumps. Pure, unadulterated madness.
Like… there’s the turtles and their family dynamic, and Casey Jones and April… and then there’s other mutants, gangs, organizations, shady government entities… there’s all this drama surrounding these factions.
But there are also these inter dimensional extra terrestrials who are making NYC their battleground
But then, there’s the centuries of history between the evil Oroku clan and the good Hamato clan…
…but then there’s this whole mystical side involving these gods who have been meddling this whole time behind the scenes, and these street level events actually have major cosmic significance
And all of these threads come together in the last act, and it really shows that Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz planned this outcome from day 1.
I can’t recommend this series enough. I’d say it’s perfect. A must read.
Juggles a million plot thread and weaves them together into a gorgeous tapestry. City at War was an incredible read, but Shredder in Hell was the highlight. Gorgeous illustrations, and an ethos injected into a character that is completely unexpected but also wonderfully accepted. As this chapter closes, its a brilliant series so far. Tom Walz killed nearly every issue for 100 issues. Excited to see what comes next.
This is the conclusion to several volumes and arguably this incarnation of TMNT as it ends the run by Eastman and Waltz as writers. For a writing team to have done 100 issues (plus several spin-offs and one shots) is pretty much unheard of these days and I think there is so much to be gained by allowing so many story threads to evolve over this time that simply doesn't happen with 1-2 year runs which are more common in American comics.
There is a strong fusion of SF and Fantasy in this installment and I've enjoyed how this run uses the mutant "ooze" and reincarnation in tandem.
There are also multiple factions involved at once, which is another strength of this series - the villains don't form an orderly queue but strike simultaneously from multiple angles and different agendas.
I won't mention the events that occur but it does feel conclusive, while still giving the new creative team a lot to play with. They have some big shoes to fill.
A wonderful, constantly escalating plot bogged down by heavy exposition. Sophie Campbell takes the reins after this and I'm looking forward to seeing what she does with this series moving forward.
Absolutely mind blowing volume of stories that could serve to conclude the overall IDW series, if need be. A marked increase in quality, despite a generally strong run to start with.
More reasons to hate the Internet: I have read many reactions, suggesting I stop at issue 100, the end of this book, but any actual negative reviews I read about future issues by Sophie Campbell are so replete with incel vibes and crying about “social justice“ that I find myself thrilled to read more.
Collected in the 13th volume of the TMNT IDW ongoing series is the entirety of the "City at War" storyline, the Raphael micro-series one-shot, and the "Shredder in Hell" miniseries. The bulk of this volume is the "City at War" arc, which borrows the title from the storyline found in issues #50-62 of the original TMNT run published by Mirage Studios. Some similarities remain - including the participation of multiple factions vying for power over control of the city, and the fact that the story largely hinges around Karai. Following Splinter taking control of the Foot since the "Gauntlet", Karai acquiesced to Splinter's leadership and decided to spend time away from the Foot Clan. But Kitsune's manipulation brings Karai back into the fray with her now challenging Splinter for control of the Foot. The last couple volumes have depicted Splinter changing into someone more authoritarian, but Mikey has slowly been able to soften up Splinter's vice grip on the Foot operations. Here, Karai and her own crew of Mutanimals take steps towards deposing Splinter and it culminates in an all out war. While I was excited to get to the IDW version of "City at War", I ultimately found this a pretty disappointing read. Karai acts mostly out of character here, and though it is explained away by the fact that a magical sword is imbibing her with hate, it doesn't make for a very compelling villain. Other antagonists like Bishop and the Rat King play roles in this arc, but all it does is make things more convoluted and uninteresting.
The "Shredder in Hell" miniseries is a brief detour to elucidate Kitsune's real plot, and it's decent but pretty underdeveloped overall. In a way, this miniseries tries to rehabilitate Oroku Saki but it is a bit clumsy with the character development. But I still really liked Mateus Santolouco's artwork in this series. This miniseries feeds directly into issue #100, the culmination of several years of TMNT stories at IDW and that issue was pretty good, though definitely overhyped.
As a coda to several arcs of TMNT, it works pretty well while still leaving room for a lot more stories to be told. But the entire "City at War" storyline comes off as pretty hastily put together with too many disparate elements that don't quite connect together. There is simultaneously too much glut in this series while also not enough time put into developing core storylines. This partially due to their now being way too many characters in the mix, and it seems like the various creative teams on the ongoing and multiple one-shots/miniseries are having a hard time juggling them all.
This was really epic! Essentially every character/storyline all converged into one huge plot. The pace was quite fast and lots of action.
I particularly liked the art in the Shredder in Hell mini series, that was really strong.
However the story toward the very end and the Shredder in Hell mini-series were not my favourite. They jumped the shark a bit, and I’m not sure why as they had enough to work with to conclude the story in other better ways. That being said, it included elements that have been present in the story since its start, so I can’t be too surprised they went in that direction, nor do I deduct any stars for that decision.
probably the best book in the series so far. the definitive conclusion to most of the story so far, though it does leave some stuff for the future, this features both the greatest storyline of the series and the best spinoff. it was nice not having a volume so bogged down with crossovers and spinoffs, especially when the one we had was so good and directly played into the finale. amazing book overall.
An excellent addition to the current TMNT series and an fantastic end to the main 100 episode arc of the series. While it didn't hit the emotional highs of the last volume quite as consistently, it still manages to do a fantastic job of balancing the epic with the personal. I'm very excited to see where the series goes from here as they are setting it up to truly tread new ground.
It all leads up to here, City at War. All the storylines come together in a finale that is full of action, mystery, surprises, and mysticism. These characters have been developed well, and each personality shines through. A good volume, but this whole series is one continuous storyline. I wouldn’t pick up here if you haven’t been reading the series prior. TMNT is a good series. Recommend!
What an ending! I know the series continues past here and some threads remain open, but what a culmination to plots that have been building for literal years. The end of #100 leaves a feeling of satisfaction, and one could stop there without feeling incomplete. I am still excited to read the remaining issues, but wow, what a way to wrap it up!
I finally have read enough of these to where the obsession is calming down. I put this one down for such a long time. That being said there are some 5/5 stories in here, especially for Ralph, Shredder, and Splinter!
Lots of good stories and big antagonist battles, some of the biggest!
The shake ups at the end of this collection are gigantic!
It's difficult to avoid spoilers while talking about this volume because of how pivotal the arc is for the series. The city at war arc is excellent and the mini series collected here is one of the best in the series with amazing art.
Wow! What an ending. The adventures of Rocksteady and Bebop is interesting. The rise of a new ninja turtle. The return of the Shredder. And the death of master Splinter. All to save the world. What next?
The story and setup was really great. I like this volume since it was really focused on a single story. I like tie-ins if they bring more depth to the story, like how it was done here.
Wowza. I may have known certain events that were going to unfold in this collection but it's something else seeing it all come together. A turning point for sure.
I fantastic end to the culmination of the first 100 issues before a "rebirth" of the series. There have been a few story lines that I just didn't care about as this series went on, which meant this arc had a few too many tangled plots for my liking but it all grew towards a wonderful finale and reset for the series.
Aside from some miniseries and side issues which I didn't much care for I have been really enjoying this series so far. I'm excited now to finally be onto the "reborn" series and be catching up to the current Armageddon Game arc. Its only taken a month to get this far, I'll be a little sad when I'm all caught up and have to wait for monthly releases and probably having to wait for the final issues of Armageddon Game.
